Zomato Announces 100 Percent Plastic Neutral Deliveries From April 2022

Online food delivery platform Zomato on Friday announced 100 percent ‘plastic neutral deliveries’ from April 2022 onwards, while also setting a target to deliver more than 10 crore orders in sustainable packaging over the next three years. The company recognises that it is important to start promoting biodegradable and other non-plastic alternatives to make them become as affordable and available as plastic is today, Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said in a blog post.

“From now on, every meal you order through Zomato will be 100 percent plastic neutral, which means we will voluntarily recycle more than 100 per cent of all plastic utilised in your order’s packaging,” he wrote.

To achieve this, Goyal said, “We have started working with cutting edge ISO-certified plastic waste management organisations, who will partner with municipalities across India, to collect and responsibly process plastic waste.” Asserting that more work lies ahead in order to completely reduce or eliminate the use of plastic in food delivery, he said Zomato is also “amping up our efforts to develop and promote sustainable packaging for all types of cuisines.”

“We are aiming to deliver over 100 million additional eco-friendly food delivery orders (orders in sustainable packaging) over the course of the next three years, by supporting our restaurant partners in switching to affordable and sustainable packaging alternatives,” Goyal said.

To achieve this, he said, “We’re going to partner with various stakeholders working on innovative solutions and models for the restaurant industry including government-led initiatives, social enterprises and startups.”

While acknowledging that this initiative is going to cost Zomato a significant amount of money and affect its profit and loss statement negatively, Goyal said, “However, I strongly believe that what’s good for the planet is good for business. I also believe that profits happen when you do everything else right. And this is surely a step in the right direction.” Sharing steps taken by Zomato towards long-term sustainability, he said that last year the company had launched ‘Climate Conscious Delivery’ and also started funding local environmental projects to offset the carbon footprint of all its deliveries and packaging in India.

Zomato had also made ‘no cutlery required’ as the default option on its app. This helped ensure 74 percent of orders go without cutlery “preventing tonnes of single-use plastic from reaching landfills,” he said.

“We signed up for the EV100 initiative, and have committed to move to a 100 percent EV (electric vehicle) fleet by 2030,” he said adding, doing all this, last year, the company offset around 5,00,000 MTs of carbon emissions.

Polygon’s Sandeep Nailwal Calls for One Dedicated Regulatory Body to Govern India’s Crypto Ecosystem

Sandeep Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon blockchain has said that India should establish one regulatory body dedicated to monitor and shape up the crypto industry in the nation. The programming engineer, who now resides in Dubai, has said that representatives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), GST Council, and the federal finance ministry should be part of a newly formed body dedicated to monitoring and framing the crypto ecosystem in India.

Presently, India is witnessing a boom in the blockchain industry, which provides the underlaying support to back cryptocurrencies and other related Web3 sectors like the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Nailwal has said that a new task force, headed by the finance ministry in India could provide industry players and insiders all the clarity they need on engaging with the crypto industry.

“The finance ministry should be the one heading this task force, and every other institution should be given a clear mandate that no crypto case shall be handled locally. It should only be handled by the central crypto task force,” CoinDesk quoted Nailwal as saying in an interview.

A single regulatory body will also provide a platform for blockchain players to discuss future plans with India’s financial and national security advocates to take actions in accordance with the government laws, the Polygon chief believes.

“What they see is that crazy value is being created and try to see how it can be taxed in India. That’s needed, too. But to expect each nodal member of each regulatory body to truly understand this new technology in their busy schedules is very difficult. Hence, we need one single highly empowered division, which has singular responsibility to interact, learn and enforce regulations on this fairly niche industry” Nailwal reportedly added.

In March, the Polygon co-founder had said that India’s lack of regularity and clarity around the crypto sector is leading to a “crazy brain drain” from the Indian crypto sector.

Regulatory uncertainties in India were one of the major factors why Polygon, despite being created by Indian developers, has no offices in the country.

While India is still awaiting its core crypto laws, the country has brought the digital assets industry under its tax regime starting April 1.

The government of India has levied 30 percent tax on all profits or incomes generated by the trading, buying or selling of virtual digital assets. In addition, a one percent tax-deducted-at-source (TDS) has also been imposed on all crypto transactions in order to keep their movements under traceable category.

As Nailwal suggested, other groups focussing on core crypto developments, are cropping up on global levels.

UK has formed a special Crypto and Digital Assets Group, bringing together parliamentarians, law makers, and finance experts to foster its crypto ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the Financial Stability Board, which groups regulators, central banks, and finance ministry officials from the G20 economies, is also looking at what needs to be done with cryptocurrency assets.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has lso drafted rules instructing global tax institutions on how to share crypto-related data among each other to maintain regulatory clarity on an international scale.

Google Workspace Now Lets Companies Update Apps on Employee Devices

Google Workspace now allows companies to easily manage their employee’s devices with better control. Google Workspace admins now have the ability to control Android app updates on their employee devices that are part of the managed Google Play system. Workspace Admins can now specify whether apps need to be updated right away or scheduled for later. These policies can be set up on a group level by the admins within the organisation.

“Previously, the default behaviour for app updates in managed Google Play was contingent on the device being connected to a Wi-Fi network, to be charging, and not being actively used. This behaviour is not always suited to the needs of our customers and admins need more granular control over how apps are updated,” explained Google in a blog post.

According to the company, admins can now set specific criteria for when managed play apps can update.

Admins can set “App auto-update timing” to “High priority” so updates are installed immediately “after publishing the new version and it will be reviewed by Google Play.” This download can happen when the device is on cellular power. It will also get updated when the app is being actively used by the user and if the device is offline, then the app will be immediately updated the next time the device is connected to the internet, as per the company.

The update has been already rolled out (up to 15 days for feature visibility) on April 21, 2022.

Global Refurbished Smartphone Shipments Saw 15 Percent Surge in 2021: Report

The Refurbished Global Smartphone market saw a surge in demand as well as supply in 2021, according to a report. Refurbished smartphone shipments have witnessed a 15 percent yearly growth, whereas new smartphone shipments grew 4.5 percent in the year. It could be seen that the larger consumer section has shown more inclination towards buying refurbished smartphone models of popular brands like Apple and Samsung in 2021.

According to the Counterpoint’s “Refurbished Smartphone Tracker”, Latin America and India lead with the highest growth rates, at 29 percent and 25 percent respectively. Apple remained the secondary refurbished market leader, whereas Samsung witnessed the most refurbished model shipments in 2021.

Consumers seem to get attracted towards choosing the pre-owned devices thanks to additional benefits and options for the same, as per the report.

Commenting on the growth, Senior Analyst Glen Cardoza said, “Refurbished smartphones are a part of overall pre-owned devices which re-enter the system through various routes. Trade-ins are the fastest-growing source for such pre-owned smartphones, the volume of which grew more than 10 percent globally in 2021. We are seeing a YoY increase in volumes among refurbished players in developing markets like China, India, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. These markets will grow more as they have many unorganised businesses and a large rural demographic yet to be captured. ASPs (average selling prices) of refurbished smartphones increased marginally as 4G devices still retained value.”

Moreover, there were supply shortages in the secondary market in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdowns, but the market surged back in 2021.

F1 22 Announced, Releasing July 1; to Feature VR Support on PC, Updated Gameplay, More

F1 22 — the official game for the ongoing 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship — will be released on July 1, Electronic Arts announced on Thursday. The successor to F1 2021 will let players race in the latest season with redesigned cars, updated rules, and gameplay options. Gamers will also be able to test out the new Miami International Autodrome. The PC version of the game also comes with VR compatibility, but there’s no word from EA on whether F1 22 will come with PSVR support.

In an announcement posted to the official website on Thursday, EA revealed that F1 22 will be released July 1 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and on PC via the EA App, Origin, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Gamers who pre-order the F1 22 Champions Edition will be able to access the game three days earlier — on June 28.

As part of the updated gameplay coming to F1 22, gamers will be able to customise formation laps, safety car periods, and pit stops. This year, EA has also added F1 sprint races. Gamers will have access to the new Miami International Autodrome with 19 corners, along with new cars and a revamped handling model, according to EA.

Unlike previous releases — including F1 2021 — the upcoming F1 22 title will offer VR compatibility for immersive gameplay on PC, via Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. As previously mentioned, EA is yet to reveal whether the game will come with PSVR support. Meanwhile, gamers will also be able to access My Team and Career Mode with two-player split screen and online multiplayer, as well as a new hub called F1 Life, where they can show off supercars, clothing, and accessories unlocked while playing the game.

The game is available to pre-order at Rs. 2,999 for PC, Rs. 4,499 and Rs. 3,999 for PS5 and PS4 on the PlayStation Store, and Rs. 4,999 and Rs. 3,999 for the Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One, respectively. The F1 22 Champions Edition is priced at Rs. 4,299 for PC, Rs. 5,499 on the Xbox Store, and Rs. 5,299 on the PlayStation Store.

Pre-ordering the game before May 16 will also grant gamers access to Miami-themed content including livery, suit, helmet, gloves, a cap, t-shirt and wall art designed by a local artist. Meanwhile, the F1 22 Champions Edition will grant access to the game three days before the release date along with F1 22 New Era content, a F1 Life Starter Pack, new My Team Icons, and 18,000 PitCoin, according to EA.

On PC and consoles, you can get limited-time access to F1 22 with the EA Play subscription that costs Rs. 315 per month in India. Alternatively, you can get full unlimited access to the game on PC with the EA Play Pro subscription that comes in at Rs. 999 per month in India. EA Play also offers early access.

F1 22 — now using the same truncated year-styling like EA’s other annual games, following Codemasters’ acquisition — is out July 1 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. It can be played in VR with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

PS5 India April 22 Restock: How to Pre-Order PlayStation 5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Gran Turismo 7 Bundle

PS5’s April restock is here. Today at 12pm noon, both variants of Sony’s elusive next-gen console — the Rs. 49,990 Blu-ray-equipped PS5, and its Rs. 39,990 disc-less counterpart PS5 Digital Edition — will be up for pre-orders in India. Alongside, some retailers will also offer a Rs. 54,490 bundle of the Blu-ray PS5 and Gran Turismo 7 that represents a Rs. 499 saving if you were to buy them separately. Gran Turismo 7 released at the start of March — to heavy backlash from fans owing to microtransactions and grind-based economy — so Sony India has taken its sweet time in offering this bundle. To me, it looks like a case of Sony trying to offload copies of Gran Turismo 7 that have remained unsold.

If you are trying to buy PlayStation 5 online, you can do that on Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, Game Loot, Games The Shop, Reliance Digital, Sony Center, and Vijay Sales. You can also check out game stores near you. Though as has been the case for over a year now — the PS5 celebrated its first birthday in India earlier in 2022 — the big concern is whether you can actually manage to buy one, given Sony India’s continued inventory struggles.

The April 22 PlayStation 5 restock is just the 15th time Sony’s flagship console is being made available for pre-orders in India, since its launch last February. Its Blu-ray-devoid sibling PS5 Digital Edition has fared even poorly, with this being only the ninth time interested buyers have had the opportunity to pre-order one. Of course, that is far from the only hassle with buying a PlayStation 5 in India. Every single time, the likes of Croma and Games The Shop have shown themselves to be unable to handle the load. Even Amazon has had trouble a few times. Additionally, Croma, Flipkart and Reliance Digital are also known for cancelling PS5 pre-orders due to their own technical challenges.

And while there have been no restrictions on deliveries for a while now, Sony Center website ShopAtSC continues with its COVID-19 boilerplate: “We intend to deliver your allocated stocks around 30th April 2022 and onwards — however please expect a delay in our delivery services which might get impacted due to regulations imposed by lockdown/ curfew in your locations.” Expect the rest of the official PS5 online retailers — Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, GameLoot, Games The Shop, Reliance Digital, and Vijay Sales — to be in line with Sony Center’s estimates. Though at times, we have seen some online retailers ship out their PS5 pre-orders prior to the announced delivery date.

Women Will Hold a Quarter of Leadership Roles at Large Global Tech Firms In 2022: Deloitte Report

More women are getting into leadership roles in the tech industry, which has long been seen as an area dominated by men. The report, prepared by consulting firm Deloitte, said women will hold about one in four leadership roles at large global technology companies this year. That is a jump of 20 percent from 2019 and the momentum is noticeable since the participation of women in the tech industry, especially in leadership roles, has tended to lag behind over the years, it added.

Authored by Susanne Hupfer, Sayantani Mazumder, and Gillian Crossan, the Deloitte report said that the ongoing diversity efforts have created an enabling environment for women to break the industry’s glass ceiling and join the leadership roles in growing numbers. Several large tech companies have committed publicly to improve gender diversity. For instance, the report said, Intel aims to double the number of women and underrepresented minorities in senior leadership roles by 2030.

According to Deloitte’s estimates, women’s share in the overall global tech workforce has increased 6.9 percent between 2019 and 2022, while their share in technical roles has grown by 11.7 percent. Notably, the fastest growth—an estimated gain of nearly 20 percent —has occurred in the proportion of women in leadership.

The report has come as the global tech industry is trying to improve its image of a mostly white male dominated sector. Since tech giants Google, Facebook, and Twitter started publishing their diversity reports over the last decade, progress has been slow. Also, working women have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, having to either scale back on their work commitments or quit their jobs to care for their families.

The authors made several recommendations for tech companies to better their diversification efforts. Those included goal-setting and transparency. They said tech companies must report and track progress to understand what is working for them and what isn’t. This way they can modify and change their approach to improve.
