Huawei Watch Fit 3 Design Renders, Colour Options Leaked; Appears Similar to Apple Watch

Huawei Watch Fit 3 is expected to launch later this year and will succeed the Huawei Watch Fit 2. The smartwatch has started doing runs of the rumour mill and has appeared online via several leaks. A new leak suggests that the design of the purported watch will be similar to that of the Apple Watch. A tipster shared leaked design renders of the anticipated smart wearable, which also hints at its colour and strap options. The Watch Fit 3 has also been tipped to come with major user interface upgrades.

Tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) shared a series of images on X (formerly Twitter) that suggests the design of the Huawei Watch Fit 3. To the common eye, the design of the smartwatch seen in these images is almost indiscernible from that of an Apple Watch. It shares a similar squarish look, with even the placements of the rotating crown and the navigation button in the exact place as on an Apple Watch.

However, minute differences appear if you look closely. The leaked design renders of the Huawei Watch Fit 3 are seen with thicker bezels around the display than an Apple Watch. There seems to be a difference between the metal finish of the bodies, as well. The Huawei version is likely to have a more polished, shinier look than the Apple watches.

One of the Huawei Watch Fit 3 variants in the leaked renders is seen with a golden body with orangish leather straps. Four options are seen with a silicone strap sharing body and strap colours, which include black, light green, pink, and white. Two models are also seen with red rotating crowns and navigation buttons with red accents. One of these seems to come with a Milanese strap, similar to an option offered with the Watch Fit 2 model.

Specifications and launch details of the Huawei Watch Fit 3 have not been revealed. However, recently another tipster Fixed Digital Focus (translated from Chinese) shared in a post on Weibo (via Gizmochina) that the smartwatch is likely to launch after the Spring Festival in 2024. It is said to come with a 2.5D display and a “flagship-level crown.” The watch is also expected to come with major UI changes. It may arrive with pre-installed HarmonyOS 4.2 or the upcoming HarmonyOS NEXT, according to the leak.

Huawei P70 Art Camera Module Leaked Via Render, Tipped to Offer Satellite Connectivity

Huawei P70, Huawei P70 Pro, and Huawei P70 Art are set to be officially unveiled this month if recent leaks are to be believed. Huawei is yet to disclose any details about the Huawei P60 series successors, but ahead of it, several details of the Huawei P70 Art have leaked online. The latest leaks suggest that the handset will offer a satellite communication feature. This will let users contact emergency services when they do not have access to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. It is tipped to come with a triple rear camera setup.

Tipster Teme (@RODENT950) posted an alleged image of the Huawei P70 Art showing off its camera module on X. The camera module seems to have a slightly different design from its predecessors. It houses three sensors alongside an LED flash and is shown to have an ‘XMAGE’ branding.

Further, a Chinese tipster on Weibo claims that the Huawei P70 Art will offer a satellite communication feature that would allow users to access emergency services when they are in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi connection. It is also said to feature a Sony IMX989 1-inch sensor.

The Huawei P70 Art is expected to bring notable upgrades over last year’s Huawei P60 Art. The latter was launched in March last year with a starting price tag of CNY 8,988 (roughly Rs. 1,08,200) for the 512GB storage model.

Huawei P60 Art features a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate and is powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. It sports a triple rear camera setup comprising two 48-megapixel sensors with OIS and a 40-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. On the front, it has a 13-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls. It comes with up to 1TB of storage and offers an IP68-rated build for dust and water resistance. The phone is backed by a 5,100mAh battery with 88W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

Huawei Vision to Compete With Apple Vision Pro, Could Sport Same Display Panel in a Lightweight Body: Report

Apple Vision Pro might soon get stiff competition from Huawei’s rumoured mixed-reality headset, as per a new report. Apple launched its $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) headset in the market earlier this month, powered by dual M2 and R1 chipsets and featuring 12 different cameras. But now, the Chinese brand’s wearable device, said to be named Huawei Vision, could edge its Cupertino-based rival in multiple parameters. Notably, it is reported to weigh half as much as the Vision Pro.

The details about Huawei’s under-the-wraps headset come from a Weibo post made by Li Nan, the former marketing director of the Chinese consumer tech brand Meizu (via Huawei Central). In the post, he not only revealed the name of the product as Huawei Vision, a name that was reportedly trademarked by the company in 2019 but also highlighted that it might offer a better value than the Apple Vision Pro.

As per the post, the mixed-reality headset could weigh 350g, which would be half of Apple Vision Pro’s 600g weight. But a lighter weight may not mean an inferior product. Li Nan also highlighted that the Chinese brand might use the same 4K Sony micro-OLED display that Apple has used for its headset. It is worth mentioning that most users have found the display experience of Apple’s wearable to be the main highlight. Further, it is also rumoured that the Huawei Vision might be priced at $1,750 (roughly Rs. 1.45 lakh), which is again half of what the Apple headset costs.

Besides that, the post also mentioned that Huawei Vision might be powered by natively developed processors by the company and offer a zero-lag experience. It would be interesting to see how the company intends to find the right Silicon innovation to support such an emerging technology and compete with Apple’s processors which are said to handle data from the Vision Pro’s many sensors with a 12ms response time and 256GBps bandwidth.

One downside highlighted by the post is the lack of a feature similar to Apple Vision Pro’s EyeSight. This feature projects a replica of the user’s eyes on the outer end of the glasses to make it easy for non-users to interact with the person. However, some have reported not being a fan of this feature as it looks unnatural.

While there is no launch date mentioned, it is rumoured that Huawei’s mixed-reality headset could be launched later this year.

Huawei Pocket 2 Confirmed to Launch on February 22; Colour Options Tipped

Huawei Pocket 2 is set to arrive in the Chinese market soon. The company announced the launch date of the foldable smartphone but did not reveal much else about it. The handset is expected to succeed the Huawei Pocket S, which was unveiled in China in November 2022. The upcoming flip foldable handset is expected to launch with upgrades over the preceding model. Recently, some design leaks have suggested the colour options and finishes for the Huawei Pocket 2.

In a Weibo post, Huawei confirmed that the Huawei Pocket 2 will be launched on February 22 at 2:30pm local time (12pm IST). The teaser does not show the design of the phone directly, but it hints at two circular modules, similar to the design of the older Huawei Pocket S and Huawei P50 Pocket. One of these round units is expected to hold the rear cameras, while the other is likely the outer display.

The hint of the rear panel design aligns with earlier leaks. The Huawei Pocket 2 is tipped to launch in black, purple, and white colour options, the latter of which appeared with a marble-like pattern. Meanwhile, the purple variant was seen with a faux leather finish. The phone is expected to feature triple rear camera units, a Kirin 9000s SoC, and a larger battery than the preceding model.

Notably, the Huawei Pocket S has a 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED primary screen and an outer 1.04-inch circular OLED display. It comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G SoC, a 4,000mAh battery with support for 40W wired charging, and ships with HarmonyOS 3. The dual rear camera of the handset features a 40-megapixel primary sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide angle lens, while the front camera sports a 10.7-megapixel sensor.

Offered in Frost Silver, Ice Crystal Blue, Mint Green, Obsidian Black, Primrose Gold, and Sakura Pink colourways, the Huawei Pocket S launched in China with a price tag of CNY 5,988 (roughly Rs. 67,900) for the 8GB + 128GB option. The clamshell foldable model also launched in 8GB + 256GB and 8GB + 512GB variants, priced respectively at CNY 6,488 (roughly Rs. 73,600) and CNY 7,488 (roughly Rs. 84,900).

Apple’s iPhone Sales Target Billions Below Wall Street Expectations as China Business Suffers

Apple on Thursday forecast a drop in iPhone sales and targeted overall revenue $6 billion (roughly Rs. 49,714 crore) below Wall Street expectations as its China business took a hit.

This overshadowed overall fiscal first-quarter sales and profit that beat analysts’ targets, powered by iPhone growth, sending Apple shares down 3 percent in after-hours trade.

The results confirmed some analysts’ concerns that the company’s signature product is losing ground in the key Asian market where consumers are buying foldable phones and phones from Huawei, powered by a China-made chip.

“China is the most competitive smartphone market in the world, and that hasn’t changed,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told Reuters in an interview. He said iPhone sales there were down “mid-single digits” in the December quarter, when accounting for currency exchange rates.

“In China, Apple is facing more competitive challenges not only because of Huawei but also because of foldables, which is a very popular and fast-growing segment in China – and as we all know, Apple does not have a foldable device – yet,” said IDC analyst Nabila Popal.

Apple said sales in China in the December quarter were $20.82 billion (roughly Rs. 1,72,509 crore), missing analyst estimates of $23.53 billion (roughly Rs. 1,94,951 crore), according to LSEG data.

Revenue in the current quarter will be at least $5 billion (roughly Rs. 41,426 crore) less than a year ago, when the company sold iPhones rapidly to replenish inventories drawn down by COVID-related factory shutdowns, Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told analysts on a conference call.

Maestri’s comments implied a revenue forecast of about $90 billion (roughly Rs. 7,45,681 crore) and iPhone sales of around $46 billion (roughly Rs. 3,81,126 crore) for the fiscal second quarter that ends in March. Wall Street expected nearly $96 billion (roughly Rs. 7,95,393 crore) in revenue and iPhone sales of $50 billion (roughly Rs. 4,14,281 crore). They were $51 billion (roughly Rs. 4,22,568 crore) in the 2023 quarter.

That would make it the company’s worst fiscal second quarter of iPhone sales since widespread COVID lockdowns in March 2020.

“The drag would be China – and it has everything to do with their seasonality, and the elongated replacement cycle,” said Ben Bajarin, CEO of research firm Creative Strategies.

“Regardless of what happens, (a drop in) year-over-year iPhone sales would be more of a concern than a quarter.”

For its fiscal first quarter ended December 30, Apple reported sales of $119.58 billion and profit of $2.18 per share, both above analyst expectations of $117.91 billion and $2.10 per share.

Sales of iPhones hit $69.70 billion in the quarter, growing 6 percent to beat analyst expectations of $67.82 billion, on the strength of its iPhone 15 lineup, which includes devices capable of capturing three-dimensional video for the Vision Pro headset being released this week. Apple’s total installed base of devices hit 2.2 billion, up from 2 billion a year ago.

“We had particularly strong double-digit growth on iPhone in emerging markets outside of China,” Cook said.

‘Huge opportunity’

Where Apple’s results disappointed, two other tech heavyweights, Amazon.com and Facebook owner Meta Platforms, reported quarterly results on Thursday which led to jumps in their share prices.

Microsoft in January eclipsed Apple as the world’s most valuable company, with investors viewing Apple as lagging in the AI race among tech heavyweights.

Apple has rarely discussed generative AI but on Thursday Cook said on the conference call that it was a “huge opportunity” and there was “a lot of work going on internally” but that he did not plan to discuss it publicly until later this year.

In the rest of Asia beyond China and Japan, Apple’s sales hit $10.16 billion, above analyst estimates. Cook said that iPhone sales hit an all-time high in South Korea, home to longtime rival Samsung Electronics.

The biggest growth area for Apple during its fiscal first quarter was its services business, which includes the Apple TV+ service as well as music, iCloud storage and the App Store, and which rose 11 percent to $23.12 billion in sales, slightly below analyst expectations.

Apple’s App Store also faces a challenge in Europe, where a new law that takes effect in March will allow developers to skip paying commissions to Apple and place alternative app stores on the iPhone.

Apple’s first-quarter Mac sales were up slightly to $7.78 billion, in line with analyst expectations. Sales of iPads were down 25 percent to $7.02 billion, a little behind Wall Street’s target.

Apple’s wearables segment, which includes its AirPods and Apple Watch sales, fell to $11.95 billion after company executives had warned of weak demand, just enough to top analysts’ targets

The company’s Vision Pro headset will be included in the segment in subsequent quarters, though analysts do not expect it to bring meaningful revenue for several years.

Several Apple Watch models have been at the center of a legal dispute with medical device maker Masimo and were briefly pulled from shelves before Apple removed a blood-oxygen monitoring features to comply with legal rulings and keep selling the devices.

Huawei Mate 70 Models Tipped to Compete With Upcoming iPhone 16 Series

Huawei Mate 70 series is expected to be unveiled later this year. The company has not yet confirmed the lineup, but online leaks have suggested some features that the purported handsets may carry. The rumoured smartphones are expected to succeed the Huawei Mate 60 series that includes the Huawei Mate 60Huawei Mate 60 ProHuawei Mate 60 Pro+, and Huawei Mate 60 RS Ultimate. The upcoming lineup may also be available with the same models. Ahead of any announcements, a new leak suggests that the phones may rival the next generation of Apple’s smartphones.

Tipster Smart Pikachu (translated from Chinese) shared in a Weibo post that the Huawei Mate 70 series is expected to offer significant competition to the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup, that is expected to launch in September this year. The Chinese OEM is said to bank more on domestic production and self-developed hardware and technology in their attempt to regain status as a market leader in China.

Huawei has already been experiencing growth in the Chinese market over the past few quarters. As per October sales numbers recorded by a Counterpoint Research report, Huawei sales grew by 83 percent, while Apple sales grew 11 percent, following the launch of the Huawei Mate 60 and iPhone 15 lineups. Another Counterpoint Research report showed that Huawei shipments soared 41 percent year-on-year in Q3 2023 followed by the launch of the Kirin 9000s SoC-backed Mate 60 models.

The growing trend for Huawei continued in the last quarter of 2023, which saw shipments increase by 36.2 percent. In comparison, Apple shipments in China shrank 2.1 percent on a year-on-year basis in Q4 2023. Although the company managed to bag the largest market share with 17.3 percent, analysts forecast a difficult year for the Cupertino-based tech giant in the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, the tipster also claimed that Huawei is planning higher shipment volumes for its purported Mate 70 lineup, including that of the top-of-the-line RS Ultimate model. The volumes are said to be significantly larger than those seen with earlier models. The hybrid camera systems expected to feature on the Huawei Mate 70 models are likely to include a new one-inch primary camera with a large aperture for increased light processing capacities, according to the tipster.

The Mate 70 series is also tipped to get a display upgrade which may come with a quad micro-curved design. The models in the lineup are expected to offer different screen sizes, as is commonly seen with iPhone models. The company’s Harmony OS is also expected to get integrated AI features.

iPhone Shipments in China Drop 2 Percent in Q4 as Apple Battles Huawei for Market Share

Apple’s smartphone shipments in China shrank 2.1 percent in the final quarter of 2023 from the same year-ago period, hurt by intensifying competition from local rivals led by Huawei, data from research firm IDC showed on Thursday.

The drop underscores the challenges facing the US firm in its third biggest market, as some Chinese companies and government agencies limit employees’ use of Apple devices, a measure that mirrors US government restrictions on Chinese apps on security grounds.

Huawei, whose smartphone business was decimated by US sanctions, also made a comeback last year with new launches, intensifying competition in the world’s biggest smartphone market that grew just 1.2 percent in the final quarter of 2023.

Huawei’s shipments increased 36.2 percent in the last quarter of the year, the IDC figures showed. The company became the fourth largest smartphone vendor in China in the period with a 13.9 percent market share, up from 10.3 percent in the same year-ago quarter.

For the full year 2023, however, Apple overtook Vivo to become the top smartphone seller with a 17.3 percent market share, according to IDC. This marks the first time Apple became the top seller in China, but analysts predict its sales will come under pressure again this year.

IDC said Apple’s high-end market share in China has been impacted by rival products and limited product upgrades by Apple which reduced the overall attractiveness of iPhone models.

It said Apple still attracted demand from many consumers through substantial discounts and promotions carried out through third-party distribution channels.

Earlier this month, Apple offered rare discounts on its iPhones, cutting retail prices by as much as CNY 500 ($70 or roughly Rs. 5,800) amid growing competitive pressure.

Jefferies analysts predicted earlier this month that Apple’s shipment volumes would continue declining by double digits in 2024, while Huawei is seen bolstering its market share.

They estimate Huawei will ship around 64 million smartphones worldwide in 2024, a significant rise from fewer than 35 million units projected for 2023.

Overall, shipment volume in China’s smartphone market was 73.63 million units in the fourth quarter. For the full year, shipment volume was 271 million units, down 5 percent, IDC said.

Apple releases its quarterly results next week.

Apple Offers Rare iPhone 15 Discounts in China Amid Slow Sales, Competition From Huawei, Xiaomi

Apple is offering rare discounts on its iPhone models in China, cutting retail prices by as much as CNY 500 ($70, or roughly Rs. 5,800) amid growing competitive pressure in the world’s biggest smartphone market.

The US tech giant cut prices of some iPhone models by 5 percent, its Chinese website showed on Monday. The time-limited promotion, branded as a Lunar New Year event, will last from January 18 through January 21 in a lead-up to the holiday in mid-February.

Sales of Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series of handsets have been far worse than previous models in China.

Home-grown rivals such as Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi offer competitive models, while sources have said some companies and government departments have been limiting staffers’ use of Apple devices – mirroring US government restrictions of Chinese apps on security grounds.

Chinese iPhone sales dropped 30 percent in the first week of 2024 versus the same period a year earlier, Jefferies analysts said in a client note, having fallen 3 percent for all of 2023. Analysts expect the competitive landscape to get tougher this year.

Apple has not cut prices for its latest iPhones in years. The cuts come after it surprised the market by not raising prices for the iPhone 15 series at its September launch.

Online shopping platforms including Pinduoduo have been slashing prices of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro by as much as 16 percent since the beginning of the year.

Nicole Peng, senior vice president of market research firm Canalys, said the discounts did not come as a surprise as Apple is under pressure to boost sales globally, and especially in China, amid intensifying competition and Apple fans’ growing reluctance to upgrade.

“It is clear that Huawei is making a comeback,” Peng said, “Some Chinese consumers may return to using Huawei as driven by patriotism.”

Canalys expects Apple sales this year to stay flat worldwide while suffering a slight decline in China.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
