iPhone 14 Series Design Suggested in Panel Leak, Display Differences Tipped

iPhone 14 series has been in the rumour mill for quite some time now. The lineup is expected to include four models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Cupertino giant is yet to confirm the development of these models, but ahead of it, an image showing the front panels of the iPhone 14 series has surfaced online. The leaked render tip the size differences of upcoming iPhone models and suggests their front-facing and face ID layouts. Both iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are shown with a pill-shaped hole-punch display replacing the display notch of previous iPhone generations. They are said to have a 19.5:9 aspect ratio as well.

Tipster Saran (@SaranByte) tweeted a leaked photo from Weibo showing the front panels of the entire alleged iPhone 14 series. The image suggests a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. If this turns out to be correct, this would be a design change from the display notch of previous iPhone generations. The display cutout will house the face ID sensor and selfie camera.

In the leaked render, the alleged iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are seen with the same notch design we have seen in iPhone 13 series. As per the panel photo, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could pack thinner bezels with a taller build. They are said to come with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio as well, slightly lower than the 20:9 aspect ratio of current iPhone models.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone Pro Max are expected to be powered by the next-generation Apple A16 Bionic chip. The regular iPhone 14 models are tipped to come with the current generation A15 Bionic chips that power the iPhone 13 series and the new iPhone SE (2022).

As per past leaks, iPhone 14 will come with a 6.06-inch flexible OLED screen while the iPhone 14 Pro will sport a 6.06-inch flexible OLED LTPO screen. The iPhone 14 Max is said to get a 6.68-inch flexible OLED screen and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could sport a 6.68-inch OLED LTPO screen.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone was launched in China. The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is the successor to the Huawei Mate Xs that was released back in February 2020. It features a 7.8-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the smartphone gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, and 4G connectivity. It gets a triple rear camera setup that is fitted with a 50-megapixel primary sensor. It also gets support for Huawei M-Pen 2s. Along with the Huawei Mate Xs 2, the company also launched the Huawei MatePad SE budget tablet.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 price starts at CNY 9,999 (roughly Rs. 1,15,850) for the base 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. The 8GB RAM + 512GB storage variant is priced at CNY 11,499 (roughly Rs. 1,33,200). There is the Huawei Mate Xs 2 Collector’s Edition that comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB storage. The variant is priced at CNY 12,999 (roughly Rs. 1,50,600). The Huawei foldable smartphone will be available for purchase in Brocade White, Elegant Black, and Frost Purple colours from May 6.

The Huawei MatePad SE price is set at CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 17,400) for the Wi-Fi-only 4GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The Wi-Fi + LTE variant with 4GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at CNY 1,699 (roughly Rs. 19,700). It will be available for purchase starting May 6 in Dark Blue colour.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Huawei Mate Xs 2 runs on HarmonyOS 2. The smartphone’s screen measures 7.8 inches (2,480×2,200 pixels) in expanded state, and 6.5 inches (1,176×2,480 pixels) in folded state. There is an OLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, up to 240Hz touch sampling rate, and 424ppi pixel density. Under the hood, the foldable smartphone gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G SoC, paired with up to 12GB of RAM.

For selfies and video calls, the handset carries a 10.7-megapixel sensor paired with an f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens.

The handset comes with up to 512GB of storage which can be expanded further by up to 256GB. Connectivity options on the Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone include dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.2, USB Type-C port, and NFC. Sensors onboard include gravity sensor, IR, fingerprint sensor, ambient light, among others. As far as battery is concerned, the vanilla model comes with a 4,600mAh battery with 66W fast charging, and the Collector’s Edition gets a 4,880mAh battery with 66W charging support.

Under the hood, the budget tablet gets a HiSilicon Kirin 710A SoC, which is paired with 4GB of RAM. For photography, it gets a 5-megapixel rear sensor coupled with a f/2.2 lens. On the front is a 2-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 lens.

Finance Authorities of Singapore Call for Stringent Licencing Process for Digital Asset Businesses

Singapore wishes to establish itself as a ‘responsible’ hub for crypto activities. In a bid to achieve this goal, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has called for very strict verification and licencing processes for entities dealing with virtual digital assets wishing to set up shop in the southeast Asian sovereign island city-state. Singapore’s central bank has also joined MAS in suggesting a tough screening process for the businesses that expose people to high-risk assets and could potentially cause major financial damage if left unsupervised.

“The licensing process is stringent. And it needs to be because we want to be a responsible global crypto hub with innovative players, but also with strong risk management capabilities,” said Ravi Menon, the managing director of the MAS, while addressing the subject.

The statements were made by Menon during the Financial Times Crypto and Digital Asset Summit on April 27, Bitcoin.com reported.

The MAS chief noted that cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets do pose the threat of being misused for illicit activities such as terror financing and money laundering among others.

“I think many global regulators share similar concerns about retail exposure to cryptocurrencies,” he added.

In Singapore, Menon said, the track record of licence applicants is thoroughly analysed to see if strong corporate governance structures are in place or not.

Singapore also takes a tough approach on retail investors pouring money on cryptocurrencies in order to curb the risk of big losses.

A recent report has revealed that the total crypto-related crime in 2020 has amounted to around $10.52 billion (roughly Rs. 79,194 crore).

The same report also highlighted that scams and frauds are a major problem, which made for 67.8 percent of the total cryptocurrency crime in 2020.

In January this year, the MAS had published its “Guidelines to Discourage Cryptocurrency Trading by General Public”. The document warns innocent investors against making ignorant decisions.

As of January, over 100 companies applying for licences to operate in Singapore’s virtual assets industry were denied permits. Over 170 firms had reportedly applied at the time.

The island authorities, however, do not wish to ban the crypto sector.

In fact, in March, the Singaporean regulators had advised other nations also to enter the cryptocurrency space.

As per a report by research firm TripleA, over 550,000 Singaporeans — making up 9.4 percent of the country’s total population — are crypto-owners.

The country’s biggest bank DBS Group has also created a platform to facilitate digital token transactions.

World Press Freedom Faces a Perfect Storm — Global Issues

TORONTO, Canada, Apr 29 (IPS) – The UN will be commemorating World Press Freedom Day on May 3. The following article is part of a series of IPS features and opinion pieces focused on media freedom globally.Empowered by a global pandemic and the drum beats of war, the strongest despots are growing more despotic, and criminal cartels even more brazen in their violence. Extremists of various hues are also stepping out of the shadows.

Just when the world most needs press freedom to thrive, the liberties that societies only really treasure when they are emasculated are coming under more pressure from different directions, old and new.

Farhana Haque RahmanThe 2021 World Press Freedom Index measured by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) declined last year, and is 12% down since first issued in 2013. RSF reported “a dramatic deterioration in people’s access to information and an increase in obstacles to news coverage”. The coronavirus pandemic was cited as widely used to block journalists’ access to information.

Lest you think that this deterioration is the preserve of less developed countries under autocratic rule, RSF noted an increase in attacks against journalists and arbitrary arrests in Germany, France, Italy and several other European states.

This year –as we approach World Press Freedom Day on May 3 — is measurably worse already, notably in Russia and China, but also in Mexico with an escalation of targeted killings of journalists by suspected drug traffickers.

Some 200 Russian journalists and several dozen foreign reporters have left Russia since the passing of a draconian media law on March 4 which criminalises “deliberately false” information. It outlaws calling the invasion of Ukraine a “war”. In addition Russia is still applying its “foreign agents” legislation to punish and intimidate critical media outlets, including PASMI dedicated exclusively to fighting corruption.

“The Russian authorities’ crackdown on independent media is escalating at breakneck speed. Evidently unsatisfied with merely blocking critical news sites or forcing reporters into exile, the Kremlin now seeks to incarcerate journalists who report on anti-war protests or Russian soldiers who refuse to fight in Ukraine,” Amnesty International said on April 14 commenting on the arrests of two journalists in the Russian republics of Altay and Khakassia.

“Apart from state propaganda, there is no media landscape in Russia,” Journalist Alexey Kovalyov, now based in Riga, told Al Jazeera. The power of that propaganda must not be underestimated. Accounts are widespread of people living in Ukraine telling relatives in Russia that they are being bombed by the Russian army but their own family members refuse to believe them.

The “world’s biggest jailer of press freedom defenders”, reports RSF, is however China, with 115 men and women currently incarcerated. China ranks 177 out of the 180 countries and territories surveyed. “Media freedom in China is declining at breakneck speed,” the Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) stated in January. China has labelled the FCC an “illegal organisation” and appears in its rhetoric to be encouraging an exodus of foreign journalists.

Free media in Hong Kong, once among the freest in Asia, has been almost completely dismantled, according to Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based advocacy group. Its recent report followed the HK FCC’s announcement it would suspend its Human Rights Press Awards as it risked violating the city’s national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020.

Whereas Russia and China are deploying “lawfare” against independent journalists and big companies in developed countries are stifling the press with “vexatious” lawsuits, it is more a legal wasteland or absence of the state that is killing journalists in Mexico, among others.

A wave of murders has targeted at least eight journalists so far this year, with seven killed in all of 2021, making Mexico under populist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador one of the most dangerous countries for the press. Journalists, in the words of Adela Navarro Bello, director of the Tijuana weekly Zeta, are “caught in the crossfire between the threats and bullets of narco-traffickers and organised crime and the threats and verbal attacks and attempts to morally annihilate us from the federal and state governments”.

International human rights organisation Article 19 says the Mexican government’s denial of what is happening “results in no urgent measures being taken to stop this brutal spiral of violence”.

A similar pattern is seen in Bangladesh where suspected narco-traffickers killed Bangladeshi journalist Mohiuddin Sarker Nayeem on April 13.

The Committee to Protect Journalists publishes an annual Global Impunity Index and notes that no one has been held to account in 81% of journalist murders worldwide over the past 10 years. Somalia tops the list, with Mexico ranked 6th and Bangladesh 11th.

State-sponsored or tolerated violence and political persecution aside, world press freedom is also being eroded in an insidious way in places where such freedoms are commonly understood to be vital in sustaining well-functioning democracies. Coupled with the apparently unstoppable rise of social media as a source of information – some surveys suggest 50% of adults in the US and UK get their news from social media – the state of much of the traditional press, digital or not, is far from healthy.

The annual Digital News Report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found the US ranked last in media trust, at 29%, among 92,000 news consumers polled in 46 countries. (Finland came top).

Governments must not be passive while the same powerful corporate lobbies that have spent fortunes over decades spreading climate dis/misinformation in traditional media now feed on the rapacity of Big Tech social media, which are failing to disclose comprehensive policies to combat this. Climate disinformation as a threat to climate action is highlighted in the latest UN Climate Reports.

Press offices of international organisations, particularly the UN and large INGOs, also have a particular responsibility to uphold media freedom by eschewing the corporate dark arts of delay, denial and obfuscation.

A new proposal by the EU executive to protect journalists and campaigners from so-called vexatious lawsuits is highly welcome. The move would target “strategic lawsuits against public participation” known as Slapps, where the rich misuse legal means to silence troublesome investigative reporters and NGOs.

No press freedom, no democracy. Just like freedom of speech, that does not mean a free press can publish whatever it wants. Both need to be defined and, in these very dark times, defended.

Sony Informs Developers Must Release Free 2-Hour Game Trials for PlayStation Plus Deluxe: Report

Sony has reportedly told developers to create free timed trials of their games for its upcoming highest tier of the new subscription, PlayStation Plus Premium (PlayStation Plus Deluxe in India). These free trials are purportedly required to be at least two-hour long. This policy is expected to only apply to games that will have a wholesale cost of over $34 (roughly Rs. 2,600). Furthermore, developers are expected to release free game trials only for upcoming titles. Already released games and PlayStation VR titles are believed to be exempted from this new policy.

The report from Game Developer suggests that developers would be given up to three months to release these trials from the date of the launch of their game on the PlayStation Store. They would have to keep these free trials live for at least 12 months for PlayStation Plus Deluxe and Premium users. Sony is said to be even open to custom game demos. Developers are supposedly still allowed to release games for free weekends and other promotional offers outside the PlayStation Plus Deluxe / Premium tier.

Ethan Gack from Kotaku suggests that these free game trials could be developed by the PlayStation Store team, which might prevent relatively smaller studios from getting overburdened with extra work. Still, concerns remain over these timed trials negatively impacting game sales. Also, Sony is believed to be not offering any extra perks to developers for releasing these free trials.

The all-new PlayStation Plus gaming subscription service has been confirmed to arrive in India on June 22. This three-tier service is divided into the PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Deluxe in India. Globally, the regions that support cloud streaming will receive the slightly expensive PS Plus Premium as the top subscription tier, instead of PS Plus Deluxe.

Dogecoin Jesus? Roger Ver resurfaces on Twitter, backs DOGE over BTC

Roger Ver, an early investor and ardent promoter of Bitcoin (BTC) which earned him the moniker “Bitcoin Jesus” has resurfaced on Twitter after a year and backed Dogecoin (DOGE) in an interview, preferring it for payments over the world’s first crypto.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the Bitcoin.com founder said how he was a fan of the memecoin due to its fast transaction times and low fees:

“Dogecoin is significantly better, it’s cheaper and more reliable [than Bitcoin]. If I had to pick three contenders for the world’s dominant cryptocurrency, they would be Doge, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash.”

Ver also took time in the interview to voice his support for honorary Dogecoin CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover.

“It’ll certainly make Twitter more attractive,” said Ver. “I am really, really grateful that Musk is out there calling out censorship.”

Although Ver was a proponent of Bitcoin for years, he now spends his days as a Bitcoin Cash (BCH) evangelist, the altcoin which forked from Bitcoin after a dispute over the block size.

A video posted in March to Ver’s YouTube channel shows he and his entourage onboarding retail merchants and taxi drivers to use Bitcoin Cash as a preferred payment method in Saint-Martin.

Ver says that Bitcoin Cash is the true vision of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, and despite all his advocacy for the crypto, he claims he isn’t all in on BCH:

“I am definitely a cryptocurrency whale still, I’ve always had a wide assorted basket in cryptocurrency. I was never a Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash maximalist.”

In his return to Twitter, Ver wasted little time calling attention to crypto’s first principles, with his second tweet after his hiatus on April 28. He said that custodial wallets like those used by traders interacting with centralized exchanges would cause Bitcoin to lose a “key revolutionary property.”

Noncustodial wallets where the user retains control over the assets is something that allows Bitcoin to stand out from banks and other financial products.

8,000 British Troops to Join Allied Exercises in Eastern Europe, Official Says

The British military will send some 8,000 troops to Europe as part of a larger allied deployment to deter further Russian aggression, British officials said.

The British troops will be serving in the Joint Expeditionary Force, a British-led multinational group created in 2014 in response to Russia’s seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

Tens of thousands of troops from Joint Expeditionary Force and NATO countries will participate in exercises between April and June, Britain’s defense ministry said in a statement released on Friday. The deployment was reported earlier by The Guardian.

“These exercises will see our troops join forces with allies and partners across NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force in a show of solidarity and strength in one of the largest shared deployments since the Cold War,” Ben Wallace, the British defense secretary, said in the statement.

The exercise was long planned, and Britain’s participation had been announced in February, but British officials said it had been expanded as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The joint force’s deployment is temporary, but NATO allies are considering whether to expand the forces they deploy on a rotational basis to Poland and the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Those discussions are expected to continue at the NATO summit in Spain, scheduled to begin June 29.

Those NATO battle groups have roughly 1,500 soldiers each. Some NATO allies want to expand those forces to brigade size, which could make them around 3,000 troops each.

NATO has also been discussing ways to offer enhanced security support to Sweden and Finland should they seek membership in the alliance. While NATO is expected to offer membership quickly, it will take months for individual allies to ratify the agreement, leaving those countries without the alliance’s security guarantees.

The joint-force deployment will focus in part on the security of the Baltic region, and it could offer a measure of reassurance to Finland and Sweden. Both participate in the force.

Residents of 3 Chinese cities paying taxes and charges with digital yuan

Residents in three major Chinese cities have begun paying tax, stamp duty and social security premiums using the country’s central bank digital currency — the digital yuan (e-CNY). 

According to a domestic news report, a number of government agencies in the Zhejiang province — located just south of Shanghai — are currently running real world trials programs that involve citizens using the digital yuan to pay taxes.

The Zhejiang Taxation Bureau is working with the country’s central bank — the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) — to explore a variety of taxation payment methods using the digital yuan.

The PBoC and affiliated local government agencies are reportedly looking to the next major test for the digital yuan, the Asian Games which will take place in Hangzhou in September. Local authorities claim that the digital yuan could be used to streamline calculating tax-related activities.

Following the successful steps in the implementation of the digital RMB pilot program, which began public testing in April 2021, the PBoC stated that it will look to extend the program to more Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Tianjin and Chongqing.

On the other side of the ledger to taxation, one local government has chosen to “airdrop” 15 million digital yuan ($2.25 million) to its residents hoping to boost consumer spending during the pandemic, and promote use of the new currency.

Roughly 130,000 residents of the Futian district in Shenzhen will receive a share of the 15 million digital yuan (e-CNY) in the form of a red envelope via Chinese social media app, WeChat. The digital RMB airdrop marks the most recent government attempt to boost spending in areas of China most affected by the recent Covid-related lockdowns.

In Chinese and other East Asian cultures, monetary gifts are often handed out in red packets or envelopes, as the colored wrapping bestows good wishes and luck upon the recipient.

These developments extend China’s already significant lead in developing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for public use, with the majority of countries still in the research stages of CBDC implementation.

According to state media, transactions in digital yuan across China came to nearly 87.6 billion yuan by the close of 2021.

New England Patriots NFL draft picks 2022: Analysis for every selection – NFL Nation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The 2022 NFL draft is being held Thursday through Saturday and every New England Patriots draft pick will be analyzed here.

The draft will be held in Las Vegas on the Strip in the area adjacent to Caesars Forum two years after it was initially scheduled. The 2020 NFL draft was turned into a virtual event because of COVID-19.

Here’s a pick-by-pick look at how each player New England has selected will fit.

Round 1, No. 29 overall: Cole Strange, OG, Chattanooga

My take: Strange projects to start at left guard, and if he follows in the footsteps of 2005 first-rounder Logan Mankins (32nd) or 2016 third-rounder Joe Thuney (78th), this will be a solid pick that addresses one of the team’s obvious needs (albeit one created by trading veteran guard Shaq Mason). Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy, a former New England scout, had identified Strange before the draft as an ideal Patriots fit. One question: Did the Patriots overdraft him? Strange was viewed by some draft analysts as a second- or third-round pick … which was actually what was said about Mankins back in 2005.

Starting O-line: The Patriots’ top offensive line projects as left tackle Isaiah Wynn, Strange at left guard, center David Andrews, right guard Mike Onwenu and right tackle Trent Brown. That assumes, of course, that Strange quickly adapts to the system.

Cornerback regrets? After starting cornerback J.C. Jackson departed in free agency, the Patriots had a chance to draft his replacement at No. 21 overall — Washington’s Trent McDuffie — who wasn’t projected to be available at that point by many draft analysts.
