Xiaomi HyperOS Confirmed to Launch With Xiaomi 14 Series; Firm to Retire MIUI

Xiaomi announced that the company will soon retire MIUI and introduce the new HyperOS with the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series of phones. More details about the new OS are expected to be revealed as the launch of the Xiaomi 14 lineup draws closer. The lineup is likely to be released later this year and it will succeed the Xiaomi 13 series of phones, that were unveiled in December 2022. The current MIUI skin used on all Xiaomi phones and tablets has been around for almost 13 years.

In a post on X, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that the company’s new operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS, will be introduced with the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series. He did not tease the look of the new OS or reveal any other details about it. We should learn more about it as we inch closer to its release.

A tipster recently claimed that MIUI 14 will be the “last official major version” of MIUI. This now stands to be true. Xiaomi was also tipped to have registered a “mios.cn” domain and MiOS trademark earlier this year. However, it looks like Xiaomi will be calling its OS HyperOS instead of MiOS.

Meanwhile, the complete list of specifications of the Xiaomi 14 model was leaked recently suggesting that the phone will likely launch with a new operating system. The upcoming handset is said to feature a 6.44-inch Huaxing C8 OLED display with a resolution of 1.5K, a refresh rate of 120Hz, a peak brightness level of 2,800 nits, and Dolby Vision support. It is expected to be powered by the yet-unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which is likely to be paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

Like Xiaomi 13 models, the Xiaomi 14 lineup is also said to arrive with Leica-branded cameras. Its triple rear camera unit is tipped to include a 50-megapixel OV50H primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a second 50-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens, and another 50-megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens. The base model could pack a 4,600mAh battery with 90W wired, 50W wireless and 10W reverse wireless charging, as per leaks.

Xiaomi 14 Complete Specifications Leak Online; Tipped to Get Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, 1.5K Screen

Xiaomi 14 is inching towards its launch as the upcoming phone’s entire specifications have surfaced online, leaving little to the imagination of smartphone enthusiasts. The Xiaomi 13 successor is said to come with a 6.44-inch OLED display with 1.5K resolution. It could be powered by the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The Xiaomi 14 is expected to be backed by a 4,600mAh battery unit with support for 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

Tipster Anvin (@ZionsAnvin) shared a poster that allegedly lists the complete specifications of the Xiaomi 14 on X (formerly Twitter). As per the poster, the upcoming handset will feature a 6.44-inch Huaxing C8 OLED display with 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The screen could support Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and is said to deliver up to 2,800 nits of brightness and DCI-P3 colour gamut. It is said to come with a new MiOS operating system

The Xiaomi 14 is said to run on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. Qualcomm is expected to announce the next-gen flagship chipset later this month. Further, the handset might include a large VC cooling system for thermal management.

For optics, the Xiaomi phone might get a Leica branded triple rear camera unit, comprising a 50-megapixel OV50H main camera with OIS, a 50-megapixel ultra wide-angle sensor and a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor. The handset might also get an IR blaster that will allow the handset to double as a remote control for TV, Music Player, and other electronic devices. It is said to have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Xiaomi is expected to pack a 4,600mAh battery on the upcoming Xiaomi 14 with support for 90W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. It is said to include dual stereo speakers and dual frequency GPS connection. Xiaomi could also include a two-in-one acoustic motor in the device.

The Xiaomi 14 is speculated to go official on October 27 alongside the Xiaomi 14 Pro. Since this has not yet been confirmed by the brand, all these details should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Xiaomi 14 Pro Leaked Renders Suggest Flat Display, Quad Rear Cameras, More

Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro are expected to be announced soon as successors to the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro, that were made official in December last year. Ahead of any official confirmation on the launch of the Xiaomi 14 series, leaked renders of Xiaomi 14 Pro have surfaced online to give us our first look at the front and rear of the flagship handset. The renders indicate a flat display with a centrally located hole punch cutout. The handset is said to come with a 6.6-inch screen and a quad rear camera unit.

Leaked renders of the Xiaomi 14 Pro, leaked by tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) and 91Mobiles, suggest notable differences compared to its predecessor — Xiaomi 13 Pro. The upcoming Xiaomi handset is seen with a hole-punch cutout at the centre of the display for the front-facing camera. It appears to have a flat display instead of a curved one on the predecessor. The report states that the handset will feature a 6.6-inch flat AMOLED 2.5D display with 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

The renders also suggest a quad camera setup on the rear. The Xiaomi 14 Pro’s square-shaped camera island could house a few sensors. It will reportedly measure 161.6 x 75.3 x 8.7mm, with a camera module height of up to 13.1mm. Further, power and volume buttons are seen on the left spine. It is tipped to feature dual speakers as well.

Xiaomi 14 Pro is said to run on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It is said to be backed by a 4,860mAh battery with support for 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging support. It could pack a 50-megapixel primary sensor and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

It has a 6.73-inch 2K OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz. It runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. A triple rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel 1-inch Sony IMX989 primary camera, and a 4,820mAh battery are the other specifications of the handset. It supports 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

Xiaomi to Launch MiOS as Replacement for 13-Year-Old MIUI Android Skin, Tipster Claims

Xiaomi is tipped to replace its MIUI Android skin with a new interface. Thirteen years after the Chinese smartphone maker launched the first version of MIUI for its smartphones, a tipster has claimed that the company will announce a successor called MiOS. The latest version of the skin available for eligible smartphones is MIUI 14. It is currently unclear whether MiOS will be a new Android-based operating system like Huawei’s HarmonyOS, or whether it will be an Android skin like MIUI, OxygenOS, ColorOS and Funtouch OS.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) claims in a Weibo post that Xiaomi has decided that MIUI 14 will be the “last official major version” of MIUI. The tipster goes on to state that the only shortcoming of the smartphone maker’s popular Android skin were the animation effects. Xiaomi first introduced MIUI in August 2010 and the company has released 14 major versions of the operating system so far.

The Chinese smartphone maker has not announced any plans for a new operating system so far, but back in August, tipster Ice Universe (X: @UniverseIce) posted a screenshot stating that the “mios.cn” domain and MiOS trademark was issued to Xiaomi. At the time, Ice Universe has speculated that Xiaomi’s “highly customized self-developed operating system” could be on the way.

However, it is currently unclear whether Xiaomi plans to launch its own “standalone” operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) — just like Huawei did with the release of HarmonyOS — or whether the purported MiOS will be released as a software layer on top of Google’s Android that is offered to manufacturers along with Google’s services.

Even if MiOS is a redesigned version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for its smartphones, the refreshed branding could help the company shed the perception that its MIUI skin features advertisements — Xiaomi’s skin has not displayed advertisements or promotions for several years, but some customers still associate the software with ads.

Xiaomi released MIUI 14 in December last year and the company also supports previously launched devices that are running on the older MIUI 13 version but still receiving security updates. MIUI 14 dropped support for smartphones running on Android 11, while introducing small refinements to the interface and a Photon Engine that was claimed to offer improved performance compared to previous versions of MIUI.
