6 games that could be played in primetime

The 2024 NFL regular season schedule will be officially revealed on Wednesday and for the New York Giants, they have several interesting matchups on tap.

Despite their poor play over the past decade, the Giants are often featured in primetime and during the holidays. That held true last season with six primetime games, including an afternoon game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

Even with low expectations entering the upcoming season, there are several notable Giants games the NFL might want to shine a light on. Here’s a look at six of those.

All international NFL games are considered primetime and this matchup is a near guarantee. The Giants are no stranger to playing overseas and after being awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany, it seems inevitable that they end up playing the Carolina Panthers in Munich.

Games between the Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are often considered for primetime and often end up in primetime despite the one-sided nature of the rivalry in recent years. But now there’s an added interest: running back Saquon Barkley.

When Barkley returns to East Rutherford for the first time as an enemy, the entire football world will want to watch. The NFL can already hear the cha-ching.

This is another one that seems obvious. The Giants and Dallas Cowboys often find themselves in a primetime matchup and while that generally takes place in Week 1, that won’t be the case this season. Still, the Cowboys draw ratings and the NFC East rivalry always sells. This one will come at Jurrah World.

With a home and away against their divisional rivals, this potential primetime game could be played at either location. We’re choosing MetLife Stadium based on the assumption (complete guess) that the Giants host the first game against the Washington Commanders this season. It pits former LSU teammates and first-round draft picks, Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers, against each other.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is 20-1 against NFC opponents as a starter. That lone loss? The Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones. No other explanation is necessary for why the NFL might consider this game for primetime.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is a ratings draw. That’s all there is to it. If this game ends up in primetime it has everything to do with the 27-year-old and nothing to do with the Giants.

Burrow has never faced the Giants.

Malik Nabers calls off Rookie of the Year bet with Jayden Daniels

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft, recently revealed that he and former LSU teammate, Jayden Daniels, had a $10,000 running bet on who would be this year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, was Nabers’ quarterback at LSU and the second overall selection in the draft by the Washington Commanders.

On Friday, at the Giants’ rookie minicamp, Nabers told reporters that the bet was off.

The bet was canceled after Nabers and Daniels realized they might be bumping up against the league’s policies on gambling.

“I’m educated now that I got here about sports betting and gambling,” Nabers said. “We’re calling the bet off. There is no bet now. It was just another brother pushing another brother to try to get to success. That’s all it was.”

The competition is far from over, though. Nabers and Daniels will face off twice this season. That is on the back burner for the moment. Nabers has bigger fish to fry, such as learning the playbook and fitting in with his new team.

“For right now, it’s just learning the playbook, interacting with my teammates, interacting with the rookies here. You know, trying to learn how to be a Giant, following the instructions or rules they have here. It’s just being a pro at the end of the day,” he said.

Giants’ Malik Nabers made Rookie of the Year bet with Jayden Daniels

Malik Nabers and Jayden Daniels grew close as teammates during their time at LSU but now find themselves divisional enemies.

The Washington Commanders selected Daniels second overall in the 2024 NFL draft, while Nabers went just a few picks later, getting taken off the board by the New York Giants at No. 6 overall.

“Having that guy in my corner has been the best. Going against him is going to be fun,” Nabers said during a recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast.

The competition between Nabers and Daniels won’t be limited to their two regular season meetings in 2024. The pair have already placed a bet on Offensive Rookie of the Year with the purse set at $10,000.

“We’ve got a bet going for Rookie of the Year,” Nabers said. “Whoever loses has to pay $10,000 cash.”

Pro Football Focus recently released their list of Rookie of the Year candidates with Nabers checking in fourth overall behind Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr. and his good buddy, Daniels.

USA TODAY gave Nabers the fifth-best odds with J.J. McCarthy also ahead of him.

Nabers admits that the bet was placed even before the pair were drafted, which showcases the confidence each has entering the league.

Giants great Osi Umenyiora reacts to his own Super Bowl commercial

Retired New York Giants great Osi Umenyiora is one of the rare players who was born internationally and found his way to the NFL.

After the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show, the NFL debuted a new ad campaign highlighting its International Player Pathway Program (IPPP), which Umenyiora was instrumental in launching.

In the ad, several current players are shown as a boy plays with a football while running through the streets of Accra, Ghana. At the end of the commercial, Umenyiora shows up and lets him know that his dream can be a reality and that it doesn’t matter where he was born.

“As long as you are born to play,” Umenyiora says.

On Thursday, the NFL released a heartwarming video of Umenyiora and Washington Commanders defensive end Efe Obada watching the full commercial for the first time.

The IPPP allows the NFL to expand its talent pool from US-based universities and programs to foreign countries where there is plenty of talent, but not a lot of opportunity.

Born in London and raised in Nigeria until high school when he moved to the US, Umenyiora has a passion for providing opportunities to those who might not otherwise have them. His genuine reaction to the ad that features him and that he related so authentically to Kwesi shows what a great human being Osi is.

The most interesting part of his reaction, though, is when you can see the impact register on Umenyiora’s face. Not just the impact of the ad itself, but the impact he had on making the IPPP happen, which Obada makes a point to let him know.

Umenyiora had an outstanding NFL career and is one of the greatest Giants to play defensive end. He was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2015.

Tommy DeVito turned down ‘significantly more’ to sign with Giants

Rookie Tommy DeVito is currently enjoying his 15 minutes of fame as the starting quarterback of the New York Giants.

The New Jersey native has reached celebrity status after winning back-to-back games over the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots — two teams he could have played for instead of the Giants this year.

After going undrafted this spring, DeVito reportedly turned down an offer from Washington for significantly more guaranteed money to stay close home and play for the Giants.

DeVito did not make the Giants’ 53-man roster out of training camp and was being courted by the Patriots for their practice squad before the season, but again, decided to sign on with the Giants as a member of their practice squad.

As circumstances would have it, the Giants lost both their starting quarterback (Daniel Jones) and primary backup (Tyrod Taylor) several weeks ago to injury leaving them to turn to DeVito.

He has responded by injecting some life into the Giants’ dormant offense and providing the fans with something to root for in this otherwise lost season.

The Giants will take their two-game win streak into the bye this week and decide whether they want to ride the DeVito wave the rest of the season when the team resumes their season at home on Monday Night Football on December 11 against the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL could have flexed the game out but so far have chosen not to, perhaps because of the stir DeVito is making. His family has also become celebrities, giving off a Jersey Sopranos-like vibe that fans are gobbling up.

This wouldn’t be happening in D.C. or Boston.

Thomas McGaughey once appeared to have the inside track to a head coaching job, but now he’s on a path to unemployment.

Although Sunday’s special teams performance largely went off without a hitch, there was one negative moment that truly stood out. It was a glaring issue and one that has plagued the Giants at several points so far this season.

Midway through the third quarter, while nursing a 14-9 lead, the Giants lined up to potentially block a Commanders field goal. The only problem? They had just nine players — yes, nine — on the field.

New York Giants beat Commanders, 31-19: Here’s how X reacted

The New York Giants entered Week 11 hoping to stop the bleeding against a Washington Commanders team they have dominated in recent years.

The Giants came in as near double-digit underdogs on the road with third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito under center.

From the jump, the Giants controlled the game, making the best of six takeaways and four sacks on the day.

The Commanders pulled to within five points late in the 4th quarter, but an interception returned for a touchdown by Isaiah Simmons sealed the deal for the Giants.

Giants are now 9.5-point road underdogs vs. Commanders in Week 11

The New York Giants opened as 10-point road underdogs for this Sunday afternoon’s game versus the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

The spread has dipped just a half-point to +9.5 as we get closer to kickoff.

The over/under opened at 37 total points and has remained unchanged.

The money line is currently Giants +350, Commanders -450, per BetMGM.

The Giants are 2-8 on the season (2-8 ATS) while Washington is 4-6 this year and is 5-5 against the spread.

The Giants won the first meeting in Week 7, 14-7, at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants have gone on a three-game losing streak since then, dropping games to the New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys.

The Commanders have gone 1-2 over that span with a victory over the New England Patriots and close losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.
