New York Giants will visit Panthers in Germany during 2024 season

The New York Giants will travel to Munich, Germany during Week 10 of the 2024 regular season where they’ll take on the Carolina Panthers at the Allianz Arena.

League officials made the announcement on Wednesday.

The Giants-Panthers pairing makes sense not only because Carolina was previously tabbed to play in Munich but also because New York was recently awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany.

The Giants will kick-off their marketing rights in Germany in April during the 2024 NFL Draft. On April 27th, Day 3 of the NFL Draft, the team will announce their draft pick live from Germany with a collection of fans and alumni. The Giants also recently announced their International Fan of the Year, a German native who was surprised with a video message from Legend Eli Manning and a trip to attend the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit.

The Giants have appeared in three games in Europe since the NFL began playing games overseas in 2007, including the first game ever in England, a 13-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium.

They defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 17-10, in 2016 at Twickenham Stadium and knocked off the Green Bay Packers, 27-22, in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The game will be held on Sunday, November 10 at 9:30 a.m. ET.

6 games that could be played in primetime

The 2024 NFL regular season schedule will be officially revealed on Wednesday and for the New York Giants, they have several interesting matchups on tap.

Despite their poor play over the past decade, the Giants are often featured in primetime and during the holidays. That held true last season with six primetime games, including an afternoon game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

Even with low expectations entering the upcoming season, there are several notable Giants games the NFL might want to shine a light on. Here’s a look at six of those.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

All international NFL games are considered primetime and this matchup is a near guarantee. The Giants are no stranger to playing overseas and after being awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany, it seems inevitable that they end up playing the Carolina Panthers in Munich.

Tom Horak-USA TODAY Sports

Games between the Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are often considered for primetime and often end up in primetime despite the one-sided nature of the rivalry in recent years. But now there’s an added interest: running back Saquon Barkley.

When Barkley returns to East Rutherford for the first time as an enemy, the entire football world will want to watch. The NFL can already hear the cha-ching.

This is another one that seems obvious. The Giants and Dallas Cowboys often find themselves in a primetime matchup and while that generally takes place in Week 1, that won’t be the case this season. Still, the Cowboys draw ratings and the NFC East rivalry always sells. This one will come at Jurrah World.

Rob Carr/Getty Images

With a home and away against their divisional rivals, this potential primetime game could be played at either location. We’re choosing MetLife Stadium based on the assumption (complete guess) that the Giants host the first game against the Washington Commanders this season. It pits former LSU teammates and first-round draft picks, Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers, against each other.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is 20-1 against NFC opponents as a starter. That lone loss? The Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones. No other explanation is necessary for why the NFL might consider this game for primetime.

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is a ratings draw. That’s all there is to it. If this game ends up in primetime it has everything to do with the 27-year-old and nothing to do with the Giants.

Burrow has never faced the Giants.

Giants’ updated picks following Brian Burns trade

The New York Giants made a big splash on Monday, acquiring edge rusher Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers in a trade that also saw multiple picks headed in each direction.

The full trade details are broken down as follows:

  • Giants receive: Brian Burns, pick No. 166
  • Panthers receive: Picks No. 39 and 141, a 2025 Round 5 pick

At the time of the trade, the two 2024 fifth-round picks were one spot higher (No. 140 and No. 165). However, the NFL revealed on Monday that it had committed an error in the compensatory pick formula and changed one of the Cincinnati Bengals’ sixth-round picks into a third-round pick.

Because of that change, every pick after No. 97 overall was moved down one spot.

Following the trade and the NFL’s adjustment to the Bengals’ picks, the Giants’ updated 2024 draft selections are…

  • Round 1 (No. 6)
  • Round 2 (No. 47, from Seattle)
  • Round 3 (No. 70)
  • Round 4 (No. 107)
  • Round 5 (No. 166, from Carolina)
  • Round 6 (No. 183)

Although the Giants need as much draft capital as possible, Burns is a known asset and more valuable than any edge rusher the Giants could have taken at No. 39 overall. It also immediately improves an area of need.

General manager Joe Schoen still has three top-70 picks to work with but no longer has the assets necessary to trade up (if that’s a route they wanted to go in Round 1).

New York Giants acquire edge rusher Brian Burns from Carolina Panthers

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen entered the offseason desperate to beef up the team’s organic pass rush and accomplished that task on Monday.

After several days of unsubstantiated rumors, the Giants pulled the trigger and acquired defensive end Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers.

In exchange for Burns, the Giants will send a second- and a fifth-round pick to Carolina.

Although the Panthers had placed the franchise tag on Burns, the two sides had completely halted contract negotiations. A trade was inevitable and the Giants had been in Dan Morgan’s ear for quite some time.

Burns will get a five-year contract extension worth $150 million with $87.5 million of it guaranteed.

The 25-year-old Burns was a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and had spent his entire career in Carolina to this point. He’s appeared in 80 career games (67 starts) and recorded 246 tackles (151 solo, 59 for a loss), eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 13 passes defensed, 95 QB hits and 46.0 sacks.

Burns was named to the Pro Bowl in both 2021 and 2022.

In 2023, Burns earned a 74.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, as well as a 75.2 pass rush grade.

New York Giants should consider a trade for Panthers DE Brian Burns

The New York Giants will look to supplement their pass rush this offseason and beef up a top-heavy unit.

Behind Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants have very little. Azeez Ojulari has failed to reach his ceiling and routinely finds himself sidelined with injury, Tomon Fox is still developing and Isaiah Simmons is headed for free agency.

Despite their obvious need for an edge rusher or two, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants are unwilling to spend top dollar for the premier free agents.

The Giants desperately want to add at edge rusher. They’re going to monitor the top of the market (i.e., Danielle Hunter) but aren’t really looking to spend in that range, one source told ESPN at the combine.

But there are a lot of quality, starting-caliber options, such as A.J. Epenesa, Bryce Huff, Andrew Van Ginkel, Josh Uche and Leonard Floyd, a player the Giants have long coveted. That’s more likely the path they travel in free agency.

But perhaps there is another avenue general manager Joe Schoen could take. Say… A trade.

The Carolina Panthers placed the franchise tag on defensive end Brian Burns at the deadline but reports suggest the two sides are no longer engaged in long-term contract talks. Rather, the Panthers may seek to move the two-time Pro Bowler.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports believes a trade for Burns would be affordable for most teams. With a new contract required, his price has dropped from a year ago and Anderson now feels Burns could be had for as little as a third-round pick.

The catch would be the new deal. Burns will command top-of-the-market value, which may be problematic for the Giants if Raanan’s reporting on their unwillingness to spend big is accurate.

Still, there has been smoke building throughout the Giants community over the past 24 hours that something is brewing. And as they say, “Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.”

A potential trade for Burns is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Panthers block New York Giants from DC interview with Ejiro Evero

The Carolina Panthers have been a real thorn in the New York Giants’ side during the recent coaching cycle, repeatedly blocking their interview requests.

First, they blocked special teams coordinator Chris Tabor from interviewing with the Giants and then fired him after the position had been filled. Now, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports, they have blocked New York from interviewing defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

Evero had a second interview for the Seahawks’ head-coaching vacancy Saturday, and multiple teams are interested in hiring him as defensive coordinator, according to a league source. But Evero remains under contract with the Panthers, who can block him from interviewing for lateral positions — and have with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and New York Giants.

Unlike the situation with Tabor, it sounds like the Panthers intend to keep Evero on staff if he doesn’t land a head coaching job.

Meanwhile, the Giants have been extensive in their search to replace Wink Martindale. Thus far, they’ve interviewed Dennard Wilson (Ravens secondary coach) twice, Brendan Daly (Chiefs linebackers coach), Shane Bowen (Titans defensive coordinator), Derrick Ansley (Chargers defensive coordinator), Anthony Campanile (Dolphins linebackers coach), Jerome Henderson (Giants secondary coach), and Bobby Babich (Bills linebackers coach).

New York Giants’ Brandon Brown had second GM interview with Panthers

New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown continues to generate significant interest among teams currently seeking to find a new GM.

Brown has met with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers for their vacant roles, and the Panthers have already circled back.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Brown had a second GM interview with Carolina earlier this week.

As Pelissero notes, Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby has also earned back-to-back interviews, while in-house candidate Dan Morgan remains in the mix.

Carolina fired general manager Scott Fitterer on Black Monday after a 2-15 regular season. That record normally would have earned the Panthers the top pick in this year’s NFL draft, but Fitterer traded that pick to the Chicago Bears last year for the right to draft Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.

Brown, the Giants’ assistant general manager for the past two seasons under Joe Schoen, has been a rising star in the organization and it’s no surprise that he’s being considered to run an NFL front office.

Before joining the Giants, the 35-year-old Brown worked in the Eagles’ front office since 2017 in various roles.

If Brown is hired by the Panthers (or any other team), the Giants would receive two third-round selections — one in each of the next two drafts.

New York Giants could end up playing Panthers in Munich in 2024

The NFL announced their designated teams for their London and Munich 2024 International Games on Thursday.

The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings will play at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (opponents TBD).

The Jacksonville Jaguars, a London staple, will play at Wembley Stadium and the Carolina Panthers play in Munich, Germany this coming season (opponents TBD).

Of the teams designated, the New York Giants have only the Panthers on their 2024 schedule. It is very possible the Giants make the trip across the pond and play their first game in Germany.

Why the NFL would want to subject the German populace to a match between a couple of dumpster fires is beyond us, but the possibility remains it can happen.

The Giants have played three games in Europe since the NFL began playing games overseas in 2007, including the first game ever in England, a 13-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium.

They defeated the Rams, 17-10, in 2016 at Twickenham and knocked off the Green Bay Packers, 27-22, last season at Tottenham.

New York Giants signing CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver

The New York Giants are signing free agent cornerback Stanley Thomas-Oliver, who spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, much of it on injured reserve and the practice squad.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson was the first to report the signing.

Thomas-Oliver, a former wide receiver, was the 221st selection (7th round) in the 2020 NFL draft by the Panthers out of Florida International.

The 25-year-old Thomas-Oliver has appeared in 25 games for the Panthers with no starts. He was released by the Panthers off their practice squad in September.

In 25 career games, Thomas-Oliver has recorded 17 tackles (12 solo). Most of his snaps have come on special teams.

Ex-New York Giants LB Blake Martinez attempting NFL comeback

Former New York Giants linebacker Blake Martinez stepped away from the NFL last November to pursue a career in Pokemon cards. His retirement was abrupt and unexpected.

Martinez had found a new niche in the card game, which began when he bought and later sold a rare Pokemon card for $672,000.

In just seven short months, Martinez claims to have earned upwards of $5 million in Pokemon card sales and breaks. He had started a regular stream on the popular Whatnot app but then things got a little hairy.

In August, Whatnot suspended the account owned and operated by Martinez after scamming accusations had arisen. Several of those who purchased cards through Martinez’s breaks were issued refunds.

Martinez offered an apology. Of sorts.

“I understand the optics,” Martinez said. “I understand how it looks, trust me. I know the type of business I run. I know the type of decisions I made across the board.

“I made a good amount of money — everybody knows, in the NFL — I knew stepping into this was going to have a target on my back.

“I know people that come in here, spend their hard-earned money that they could spend elsewhere — and I want this to be a safe space. I’m definitely going to take this as a learning experience … and I’m going to make an improvement.”

Now, just a few short months after the Pokemon card fallout, Martinez is working on an NFL comeback.

Martinez was officially released by the Las Vegas Raiders last week and on Thursday, worked out for the Carolina Panthers.

Although Martinez was not immediately signed by the Panthers, it’s clear that his career course has shifted once again. Still just 29 years old, it will be interesting to see if an NFL team eventually brings him on.
