5 questions with the enemy

Todd Olszewski/Getty Images

Most definitely. Ron Rivera is finished, and he knows it. Every time he talks, it’s like he’s making excuses for the past few years. Look, he has dealt with a lot, but he can’t blame Dan Snyder for the roster issues at specific positions. This is his roster.

Howell is an excellent find, but Washington’s top players, outside of Kam Curl and perhaps Howell, Brian Robinson and Jahan Dotson, are from the Jay Gruden era. Rivera’s approach will never lead to big-time success in this era of football.

The Commanders have a massive amount of cap space and five picks in the first three rounds, so next year, they could look a lot different.

Giants list 2 out, Andrew Thomas as questionable vs. Commanders

As expected, the New York Giants will be without right tackle Evan Neal and veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson on Sunday against the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field.

“Adoree’ won’t play,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Friday. “And Evan won’t play. Those two guys.”

Neal is dealing with an ankle injury — his second of the season — while Jackson is forced to sit out due to a concussion.

Linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux and rookie cornerback Deonte Banks took major steps forward, clearing the NFL’s mandated concussion protocol. Both will play in Week 11.

Safeties Xavier McKinney and Jason Pinnock, and rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito practiced in full for the second straight day and did not receive a designation. They will also play on Sunday.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Commanders can be found below:

3 best player prop bets for Week 11

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Sam Howell has been heating up as of late riding a streak of three straight games of over 300-plus yards passing.

In the first meeting, Howell was held to 197 yards passing, but a lot has changed since then. The Giants have fallen off a cliff and have the longest injury list they’ve had all season.

Cornerbacks Adoree’ Jackson (concussion) and Deonte Banks (ankle) are hurting, as are linebackers Bobby Okereke (hip) and Kayvon Thibodeaux (concussion). Both starting safeties were limited on Wednesday (back to full on Thursday), as was slot corner Cor’Dale Flott.

The Giants allowed 404 yards through the air against Dallas last week, so they are reeling a bit.

One player New York Giants would steal from Commanders

The New York Giants (2-8) will visit the Washington Commanders (4-6) at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland this Sunday.

That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Commanders’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue.

Earlier this year, we snagged center Nick Gates from Washington’s roster and he’s subsequently been benched. We’d still like to steal him back but that ship has sailed and he’s off the board.

Washington also traded away their two stud edge rushers — Montez Sweat and Chase Young — which further limits our options for theft.

Potential thefts remaining include cornerback Kendall Fuller, safety Kamren Curl, return man Jamison Crowder, and offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. But we’re going to go with the obvious choice here and no, it’s not quarterback Sam Howell. Rather, it’s veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Through 10 games this season, McLaurin has hauled in 51 receptions for 601 yards and two touchdowns. He’s on pace to finish with over 1,000 yards for the fourth consecutive season but has yet to reach his full potential.

In New York, McLaurin would provide a legitimate deep threat who’s able to create separation and draw double teams. That would also open things up for other receivers, who would face more one-on-one matchups.

The Giants are obviously in a state of flux at the moment but McLaurin would represent a true No. 1 for whoever is under center for the Giants next season.

What are your thoughts, Giants fans? Would you pick Terry McLaurin or would you steal an entirely different player from the Washington Commanders?

Defense carries New York Giants to 14-7 victory over Commanders

The New York Giants, losers of five of their six games thus far in 2023, hosted the 3-3 Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants played the game with an extensive injury list. Quarterback Daniel Jones and starting cornerback Adoree’ Jackson both sat out with neck injuries.

Three starting offensive linemen — left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) and right tackle Evan Neal (ankle) were also inactive as well as swing tackle Matt Peart (shoulder).

The Giants wore their ‘legacy’ uniforms in this game, which was a sloppily-played affair by both sides.

Ultimately, the Giants’ defense stepped up and embodied the players who had worn those uniforms before them, carrying the team to a 14-7 victory.

Commanders 0 0 7 0 7

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

  • The Giants’ defense looked strong again, holding the Commanders to just 1-for-15 on third down while forcing 10 punts and nine three-and-outs.
  • The Giants came into the game with just five sacks in their first six games. They matched that total by halftime in this game. Washington was allowing 7.3 sacks plus turnovers per game this year, the most in the league.
  • Five receivers had receptions of over 20 yards for the Giants in this game and Tyrod Taylor had a 20-yard rush. The most 20-plus yard plays the Giants have had all year.
  • The Commanders had 10 accepted penalties for a total of 75 yards. The Giants had four for 40 yards.

When the Giants forced Commanders quarterback Sam Howell out of the pocket for an incompletion on a 4th-and-5 on the New York 7-yard line with 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Giants took possession and went into the victory formation deep in their now territory and ran out the remainder of the clock to secure a 14-7 win.

  • Quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 116.9 quarterback rating.
  • Tight end Darren Waller reeled in seven of eight targets for 98 yards and a touchdown.
  • Running back Saquon Barkley racked up 118 yards from scrimmage (77 rushing, 41 receiving) and scored what would become the deciding touchdown.
  • Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt made big plays again, catching two passes for a total of 75 yards.
  • Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence had two sacks, four QB hits and six total stops on the afternoon.

Running back Saquon Barkley was shaken up after a 9-yard run in the first quarter after getting hit late out of bounds. No penalty was called. Trainers put a sleeve on Barkley’s left arm and he returned on the Giants’ next possession.

Running back/returner Eric Gray suffered a calf injury in the first half and did not return. Sterling Shepard replaced Gray on punt returns.

Backup running back Gary Brightwell (hamstring) left the game in the second quarter and was ruled out.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers on Monday afternoon before a few players are also made available.

Big Blue will return to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 8 game against the New York Jets on Sunday, October 29 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. ET.
