Darren Waller designated to return from IR

The New York Giants returned to practice on Thursday — their first full practice of the week — and the first order of business was a significant one.

Just prior to taking the field, the team announced that tight end Darren Waller (hamstring) had been designated to return from injured reserve (IR). If all goes well, he could see a few snaps on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Waller indicated on Wednesday that he was close to a return but was just awaiting the green light from trainers.

In other positive news, every single player on the active roster participated on at least a limited basis for the second straight day. All have a chance to play in Week 15 — right tackle Evan Neal included.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: N/A

Limited participant: OL Evan Neal (ankle), CB Cor’Dale Flott (shoulder), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring/finger), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle), TE Darren Waller (hamstring)

Giants’ Evan Neal out, Dexter Lawrence questionable vs. Packers

The New York Giants closed out their practice slate on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their third session in four days.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who is nursing a hamstring injury, was a practice participant for the second straight day (and third as a projected participant). Head coach Brian Daboll said he will be listed as questionable and stands a chance to play in Week 14.

Daboll was equally hopeful for fellow defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson, who has also been hobbled by a hamstring issue.

Meanwhile, tight end Daniel Bellinger missed his second consecutive day of practice due to an illness. He is questionable but should play assuming his health improves over the next 48 hours.

As anticipated, right tackle Evan Neal remains out and it’s unclear when (or if) he’ll return to the field this season.

Dexter Lawrence limited in practice

The New York Giants returned to the field on Friday for their second of three full practices ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Once again, all eyes were on nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal.

As expected, Neal did not participate in practice and is unlikely to play on Monday night. However, as head coach Brian Daboll previously alluded, Lawrence saw his workload increase and could, potentially, be available against Green Bay.

Lawrence was officially limited, which was the same as his Thursday projection.

The Giants’ full Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (illness)

Limited participant: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle)

Full participant: QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), LB Carter Coughlin (hip)

Dexter Lawrence takes step toward return

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and then had off on Thursday ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

On Wednesday, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal were not participating due to their respective injuries.

Head coach Brian Daboll did express hope that Lawrence could return to practice on Friday, but shared far less optimism as it related to Neal.

“Yeah, I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful he’ll be out here on Friday. That’s what I’m hoping,” Daboll said told reporters.

True to his word, Lawrence took a projected step forward on Thursday and was listed as a projected participant in practice. Neal, on the other hand, remained out.

If Neal misses Monday night’s game, it will be his fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.

Meanwhile, Daboll indicated that tight end Darren Waller would remain on injured reserve (IR) for one more week and hinted that cornerback Aaron Robinson may not play at all this season.

“Not sure,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The Giants’ full (projected) Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Limited participant: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle)

Full participant: QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), LB Carter Coughlin (hip)

Studs and duds from New York Giants’ Week 12 win vs. Patriots

The New York Giants took on the New England Patriots at a rainy MetLife Stadium on Sunday and the play on the field was about as ugly as the second-half weather.

Both the Giants and Patriots resembled the 2- and 3-win teams they are and showed why they are near the bottom of the league in most metrics. It was an ugly slog of a game that seemed to draw on and on.

Tackling was abhorrent, drops were abundant, missed assignments were frequent and there were precious few highlights over 60 game minutes. It was just a poor display of NFL football.

In the end, the Giants hung on thanks to three Patriots interceptions and a missed chip-shot field as time expired. Oogly.

Here is a look at some of the studs and duds (and studly duds) from the Week 12 win.

If there was a star on Sunday afternoon in East Rutherford, it was rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. He dazzled with his speed and footwork, hauling in five receptions on six targets for 109 yards. It was the first 100-yard performance for the third-round pick.

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

You won’t find tight end Daniel Bellinger in the box score but that lack of production isn’t what landed him here. He struggled mightily as a blocker, missing blitz pickups in pass protection while getting beaten as a run blocker. His regression in 2022 has been jarring.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke did miss a couple of tackles on Sunday (who didn’t?) but was arguably the best defender on the field. He was second on the Giants with eight tackles (seven solo), adding two passes defensed and an interception that was returned for 55 yards.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

If there was a worse offender for misses on Sunday, let us know in the comments below. Not only did linebacker Isaiah Hodgins whiff on several tackles, but he also let a would-be interception go right off his fingertips. It was a game of almosts for Simmons one week removed from a game-sealing pick-6.

Rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito is still struggling to adjust to the processing speed at the NFL level and his pocket presence leaves a bit to be desired but all things considered, he played quite well. Other rookie quarterbacks have struggled much more mightily against Bill Belichick and DeVito held his own. He finished the game going 17-25 for 191 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. He was credited with two fumbles (one lost).

It’s becoming clear that Sterling Shepard’s days in New York are coming to an end. He’s not the same receiver he once was despite showing flashes here and there, and Sunday’s performance was evidence of that. Shepard hauled in one reception on three targets for six yards, zero yards after the catch, and one drop.

Linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was credited with another sack, bringing his season total to 11.5, but his play outside of that was so-so. He made a terrific open-field tackle of Ezekiel Elliott to save a potential first down, but also overpursued at times, got eaten up by opposing blockers and otherwise struggled to generate consistent pressure.

New York Giants beat Commanders, 31-19: Here’s how X reacted

The New York Giants entered Week 11 hoping to stop the bleeding against a Washington Commanders team they have dominated in recent years.

The Giants came in as near double-digit underdogs on the road with third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito under center.

From the jump, the Giants controlled the game, making the best of six takeaways and four sacks on the day.

The Commanders pulled to within five points late in the 4th quarter, but an interception returned for a touchdown by Isaiah Simmons sealed the deal for the Giants.

The win improved the Giants’ record to 3-8. Here’s how X, formerly known as Twitter, reacted to the upset victory.

Giants’ Isaiah Simmons ready to square off against ex-teammates

This Sunday, the New York Giants travel to Glendale, Arizona to face the Arizona Cardinals. It’s the first of two games in a five-day span as the Giants visit San Francisco on Thursday night before returning home to East Rutherford.

Their first stop pits linebacker Isaiah Simmons against the team he left less than a month ago.

“Not letting any external factors of like revenge or anything like that come in the way of the game,” Simmons told reporters this week. “(But I’m) not an emotionless person, so I’m sure there will be some emotions flowing through me but nothing that’s going to affect me and make me do anything crazy.”

The Cardinals selected Simmons in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft but traded him to the Giants for a seventh-round pick in August. Replacing him is safety K’Von Wallace, whom the Cardinals picked up off of waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles a week after trading Simmons.

“That’s little bro,” Cardinals safety Budda Baker said. “He’s not really a teammate of ours this week so it won’t be much of anything until after the game. Love ’em, but at the end of the day he’s a Giant and that’s who we are going against. There won’t be many words until after the game.”

Simmons will most definitely have heightened emotions playing against his former team, as do many players who have tense exits with previous teams, but he seems to have the right attitude for now.

The Cards may portray viewing him as an opponent, but they will likely have their own emotions to deal with.

4 reasons for optimism in Week 2

Billy Hardiman-USA TODAY Sports

Certainly, anyone who watched the Giants’ Week 1 performance should be concerned about New York’s offensive line moving forward.

The Giants also did not show much on the defensive line, either. At least not in terms of pass rush.

Additionally, injuries to Andrew Thomas and Azeez Ojulari should be a concern for both sides of the trenches moving forward.

However, the Cardinals simply do not stack up to the threat the Cowboys present on either side of the ball in the trenches. Ideally, this will be a ‘get right’ game for the Giants and the opportunity is there to win the battle of the trenches.

Giants’ Deonte Banks is ‘ahead of schedule’ in his development

New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is stoked about his unit as the 2023 NFL regular season descends upon us this weekend.

Martindale has been gifted with a new inside linebacker in Bobby Okereke but it’s two other players that have him excited this year — rookie cornerback Deonte Banks and linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

Banks, the Giants’ first-round selection in this year’s NFL draft, is a player that Martindale says “just loves to compete,” and loves the defensive scheme and his defense.

Martindale also said Banks is making the transition from college star to NFL life quite seamlessly.

The Giants traded a seventh-round pick for Simmons, who was a top-10 pick by the Arizona Cardinals a few years ago. Martindale sees Simmons fitting in nicely with the Giants.

The Cardinals had a hard time finding the right role for Simmons but Martindale said that would not be a problem in his ‘position-less’ defensive scheme.

If the Giants are to have success on defense this season, both Banks and Simmons will have to play well in their respective roles.

5 New York Giants get new digits

As the New York Giants trimmed their roster down to 53 men, a few jersey numbers became available in the process.

On Wednesday, five Giants changed their numbers including some big names.

Buy Giants Tickets

  • Jalin Hyatt, No. 13
  • Isaiah Simmons, No. 19
  • Deonte Banks, No. 25
  • Gervarrius Owens, No. 39
  • Boogie Basham, No. 45

Hyatt switching from 84 to 13 is an interesting decision given the connection the number has to former Giant Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham delivered a message to Hyatt shortly after the Giants drafted him, jokingly asking him not to break any of his rookie records. However, Hyatt is looking to start his “own legacy with it.”

Hyatt wore No. 11 at the University of Tennessee.

Meanwhile, Isaiah Simmons was traded to the Giants just one week ago and when he joined the team, open numbers were scarce. Simmons changed from 46 over to 19, which was last worn by Kenny Golladay.

The acquisition of Simmons is something fans are excited about given his fit in Wink Martindale’s defense. Hopefully, Simmons can help fans forget about associating Golladay with number 19 in a hurry.

Rookie Deontae Banks wore 36 all preseason and is now switching over to 25. Banks primarily wore No. 3 in college at Maryland.

2023 seventh-round pick Gervarrius Owens has claimed number 39 after sporting with 31 during the preseason. The change was expected given that Matt Breida also wears number 31.

Boogie Basham, who was acquired on Tuesday, will wear 45 after wearing No. 55 with his former team, the Buffalo Bills.

And this is why you wait to purchase jerseys.
