Tiki Barber goes off on Saquon Barkley potentially joining Eagles

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley will be an unrestricted free agent come next Wednesday unless he and the team can agree to a new, long-term deal.

If a deal is not struck, Barkley will be eligible to sign with any team he chooses. Former Giant great Tiki Barber — now a top sports radio host at WFAN in New York — is urging Barkley to not sign with one of the Giants’ most hated rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Barber advised Barkley not to cross that “thick green line.”

“I still want him here,” Barber told his co-host, Evan Roberts, on Thursday.

“The last thing I want him to do is go anywhere else. But if he goes to Philadelphia, I’m not even saying his name. I might not say his name again.”

Barber said that he would address Barkley by his middle name (Rasul) if he signed with Philadelphia and also had the same warning about signing with the Dallas Cowboys.

Both the Eagles and Cowboys are expected to make offers to the top running backs in this year’s free agent class. Dallas appears to be moving off Tony Pollard and the Eagles are not expected to re-sign D’Andre Swift. Both players will also be free agents next week.

Meanwhile, the Eagles and Barkley reportedly have a “mutual interest.”

Saquon Barkley is the perfect fit for Cowboys

Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum is at it again when it comes to the New York Giants and their personnel.

Last week, Tannenbaum suggested the Giants trade swap quarterbacks with the Cleveland Browns, sending Daniel Jones to the shore of Lake Erie in a package that would return pariah Deshaun Watson and picks.

It’s a ridiculous scenario that would only happen after the last member of the Mara family left the building. The Giants have no interest in adding a player with Watson’s baggage along with an undigestible salary cap hit.

Tannenbaum’s latest suggestion is more believable. He believes star running back Saquon Barkley could end up signing with the hated Dallas Cowboys should the Giants allow him to test free agency next month.

Here is what Tannenbaum said on ESPN’s Get Up as transcribed by Big Blue View.

“This one’s easy. It’s the Dallas Cowboys,” Tannenbaum said when asked which team should pursue Barkley. “Tony Pollard was mildly disappointing replacing Zeke Elliott. His production went down by about 25 percent …

“Trust me, the last thing the New York Giants want to see if Saquon Barkley graduates this year is him with a star on the side of his helmet. Can you imagine the first time Dallas rolls into town with Saquon as a Cowboy?”

It would be unnerving for Giant fans to see that, for sure. Pollard is also a free agent after being in the same situation as Barkley last season. He did not pick up the mantle as a three-down back and there have been rumblings they will look elsewhere at running back this offseason.

Barkley, should the Giants not sign or tag him, will be pursued by several teams, not just Dallas. He is considered the top running back on the market this offseason.

The Los Angeles Chargers, with Jim Harbaugh now as head coach, will be one team hot on Barkley’s trail.

Giants’ Dexter Lawrence is ‘a nightmare assignment’

New York Giants nose tackle Dexter Lawrence is a menace. He’s arguably the best interior defensive lineman in football and his back-to-back Pro Bowl nods and Second Team All-Pro honors support that.

Few know the challenges of taking on Lawrence better than his NFC East rivals, who have the unfortunate task of trying to stop him twice per season.

During a sit down with the NFLPA at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith paid Lawrence the ultimate compliment.

“Dexter Lawrence… He’s pretty good,” Smith said. “It’s rare that you see a dude at that size be able to move like that. So, I think he’s probably a nightmare assignment for anybody.”

But Smith wasn’t the only one paying their respects to Lawrence.

Philadelphia Eagles center and future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Jason Kelce, also named Sexy Dexy as his toughest matchup.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t say Dexter Lawrence,” Kelce stated. “He’s got a good blend of everything — speed, power, and athleticism.”

Asked about his toughest matchup, Lawrence returned the respect and named Kelce.

“Jason Kelce. He’s a legend,” Lawrence said.

It’s one thing to earn praise from colleagues who only see your work on film. It’s quite another to be regarded as the very best by your most hated rivals.

Kelce and Smith naming Lawrence as their toughest matchup speaks volumes about the 26-year-old.

Cole Beasley encourages Giants’ Saquon Barkley to sign with Cowboys

The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley appear to be headed toward another contractual impasse.

One year after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a long-term deal, ultimately resulting in a modified franchise tag, they find themselves back in the same place. Only this time, Barkley seems destined to depart East Rutherford.

If that were to come to pass, Cole Beasley, who was released off the Giants’ practice squad in October per his request, believes Barkley should sign with the Dallas Cowboys in order to stick it to Big Blue.

“Saquon, I need you to go to Dallas. Getting to run it up on your old team who disrespected you is rejuvenating,” Beasley wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Although Barkley has long dreamed of spending his entire career with the Giants, an alternate reality has begun to set in over the past year. Having experienced the ugly side of NFL business firsthand, the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year now admits he can envision himself in a different uniform.

“It never crossed my mind until last year after I got tagged. Up until that moment, I really believed that I was gonna finish my career as a New York Giant,” Barkley told Complex. “But once you get to this point, you go to your contract negotiation and you go through the tag process, you realize how much of a business it is.

“And I remember vets always telling me this and you know I believed them, but you don’t really know something until you go through it. So could I see myself in another uniform? Yeah, it’s possible.”

If Barkley is allowed to hit the free agent market, he will not be short on potential suitors. Among them will almost certainly be both the Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.

Giants WR Darius Slayton enjoyed the Cowboys’ and Eagles’ collapses

Fans of the New York Giants have had little to root for in this NFL postseason, but many have reveled in the blowout losses suffered by their hated rivals — the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles — in the Super Wild Card round this weekend.

Dallas was overrun by the young Green Bay Packers, 48-32, at home on Sunday, while the Eagles were outpaced by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 32-9, down in Florida on Monday night.

The Giants finished at 6-11 and in third place in the NFC East and were never considered playoff timber this season. Dallas won the division with a 12-5 record and earned the second seed in the NFC.

Philly began the season with a 10-1 record, but then the wheels came off the wagon, losing five of their last six games to fall to the fifth seed in the NFC.

Nine of the Giants’ 17 games on their 2023 schedule were against teams that qualified for the playoffs this season.
Of the teams remaining in the playoffs, the Giants have faced San Francisco, Green Bay and Buffalo this year with one victory — a 24-22 Monday night win over the Packers at MetLife Stadium in Week 14.
The Giants fell to the 49ers, 30-12, in a Thursday matchup at Levi’s Stadium in Week 3. On Sunday night in Week 6, the Giants dropped a close one to the Bills on the road, 14-9.

Michael Irvin under police investigation over undisclosed ‘allegation’

Michael Irvin is the subject of a police investigation in Texas over an allegation that has not been specified.

The Allen (Texas) Police Department confirmed the news to ProFootballTalk, declining to clarify the nature of the accusation.

“There has been an allegation, but we are not prepared to release any details at this time due to our investigation being in its very early stages,” the police department told the outlet.

Nevertheless, Irvin’s attorney, Levi McCathern, vehemently denied that his client did anything wrong.

“He didn’t do anything wrong or inappropriate,” McCathern told ProFootballTalk.

The lawyer continued to emphasize that there was “absolutely no truth” to the allegation.

There have been a number of times where Irvin has faced allegations of improper behavior that have not ended up in a conviction.

McCathern predicted that this case, as happened with previous allegations, “will turn out to be much ado about nothing.”

NFL Media spokesperson Alex Riethmiller told The Post, “We’re aware of the report but don’t have any additional details at this point.”

Last year, Irvin was sent home from his broadcasting roles during Super Bowl week with NFL Network and ESPN after the Cowboys legend was accused of inappropriately propositioning a Marriott hotel worker.

Irvin maintained his innocence in this situation, saying he was being “railroaded” by a false accusation.

McCathern, the attorney, spoke about being upset that video of the incident was taking a long time to be released.

“I’m mad as hell that they’re hiding this stuff that is so relevant to my client’s livelihood,” said McCathern, a Dallas-based attorney.

“I think it is terrible they’re doing that. I don’t know what’s on the video. None of us have gotten to see it. But I sure think that, at a minimum, Michael has got a right to see the video.”

Irvin filed a lawsuit against Marriott, and the suit reached an undisclosed settlement.

Irvin was reinstated to NFL Network right before this season began.

New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys Player of the Game: Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants were blown out for the second time this season by the Dallas Cowboys, 49-17, on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants managed to put up points on the board this time against Dallas but the outcome was far from favorable. The Giants were clearly outmatched from the start in this one. Dallas seemed to be scoring on every drive and the Giants were unable to move the ball at all.

The only player who helped New York move the ball even a little on offense was Saquon Barkley who did his best job in competing in a rivalry game that has not felt like a rivalry for quite some time. Barkley totaled 66 yards rushing on the day as he weaved his way trying to find any room against this stout Cowboys defense. The sixth-year running back did finish with an efficient day however as he averaged 5.1 yards per carry.

Unfortunately for New York, Barkley was the team’s sole offensive weapon and Dallas was able to stack the box and stop him when it mattered (on the goal line and on third downs). Nevertheless, the Penn State product is doing all he can to prove to teams why they should take a chance on him this offseason.

Despite running behind one of the worst offensive lines in football, Barkley has recorded 564 rushing yards averaging 4.06 yards per carry in only seven games. Barkley is on pace for his fourth 1,000 scrimmage-yard season and still clearly has big play ability as he showcased it on a 21-yard scamper against Dallas.

While New York may not be his home next season another team may luck out on taking a chance by paying Barkley a handsome wage this offseason.

The New York Giants came into Sunday hoping to stop the bleeding and surprise the world when they came in as heavy road underdogs against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants were down to their third-string quarterback, Tommy DeVito, who would get his first NFL start in a tough spot.

The game was never close between the two NFC East teams that are clearly headed in different directions.

Giants’ Mark Glowinski downgraded to out vs. Cowboys in Week 10

The New York Giants will be without right tackle Evan Neal on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys after he suffered a second ankle injury during a Week 9 game versus the Las Vegas Raiders. But he won’t be the only one missing.

On Saturday, the Giants also announced that right guard Mark Glowinski had been downgraded to out. He was previously listed as questionable due to a personal matter.

“He’s not. He’s still a personal day,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday when asked if Glowinski would practice.

Glowinski missed practice on both Thursday and Friday, and did not travel with the team to Arlington on Sunday.

It’s unclear what Glowinski is dealing with away from the field but given how much time he’s missed, there is a legitimate reason for concern. Those of us at Giants Wire wish him and his family the best.

With Glowinski and Neal both out, the Giants will start another different offensive line combination — their seventh of the season. They have not started the same five players in consecutive weeks all year long.

Although the Giants did not place Neal on injured reserve (IR) this weekend, he remains a candidate to end up there given his “week-to-week” designation.
