Malik Nabers calls off Rookie of the Year bet with Jayden Daniels

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft, recently revealed that he and former LSU teammate, Jayden Daniels, had a $10,000 running bet on who would be this year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, was Nabers’ quarterback at LSU and the second overall selection in the draft by the Washington Commanders.

On Friday, at the Giants’ rookie minicamp, Nabers told reporters that the bet was off.

The bet was canceled after Nabers and Daniels realized they might be bumping up against the league’s policies on gambling.

“I’m educated now that I got here about sports betting and gambling,” Nabers said. “We’re calling the bet off. There is no bet now. It was just another brother pushing another brother to try to get to success. That’s all it was.”

The competition is far from over, though. Nabers and Daniels will face off twice this season. That is on the back burner for the moment. Nabers has bigger fish to fry, such as learning the playbook and fitting in with his new team.

“For right now, it’s just learning the playbook, interacting with my teammates, interacting with the rookies here. You know, trying to learn how to be a Giant, following the instructions or rules they have here. It’s just being a pro at the end of the day,” he said.

Giants’ Malik Nabers made Rookie of the Year bet with Jayden Daniels

Malik Nabers and Jayden Daniels grew close as teammates during their time at LSU but now find themselves divisional enemies.

The Washington Commanders selected Daniels second overall in the 2024 NFL draft, while Nabers went just a few picks later, getting taken off the board by the New York Giants at No. 6 overall.

“Having that guy in my corner has been the best. Going against him is going to be fun,” Nabers said during a recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast.

The competition between Nabers and Daniels won’t be limited to their two regular season meetings in 2024. The pair have already placed a bet on Offensive Rookie of the Year with the purse set at $10,000.

“We’ve got a bet going for Rookie of the Year,” Nabers said. “Whoever loses has to pay $10,000 cash.”

Pro Football Focus recently released their list of Rookie of the Year candidates with Nabers checking in fourth overall behind Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr. and his good buddy, Daniels.

USA TODAY gave Nabers the fifth-best odds with J.J. McCarthy also ahead of him.

Nabers admits that the bet was placed even before the pair were drafted, which showcases the confidence each has entering the league.

Giants set to meet with QB Jayden Daniels again

The New York Giants will continue to perform their due diligence when it comes the this year’s quarterbacks in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

They will be meeting once again with LSU’s Jayden Daniels on Monday as part of their top 30 visits.

Full disclosure they have met multiple times with several other quarterbacks such as UNC’s Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy of Michigan, and Washington’s Michael  Penix Jr., and have shown interest in Oregon’s Bo Nix.

The Chicago Bears are expected to select USC’s Caleb Williams with the first overall selection, so the draft essentially begins with Washington at No. 2.

The Commanders and the New England Patriots, at No. 3, are both expected to take a quarterback in this draft. The two teams selecting fourth and fifth — the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers — with either trade back to a team seeking a quarterback (the Giants included) or select a position player.

The Giants, no matter which path they take, will have a slew of talented players to choose from at No. 6.

Jayden Daniels ‘well-regarded’ by New York Giants organization

The New York Giants could be in a position to find a new quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft.

They hold the sixth overall selection in a draft that could see one of the top four quarterback prospects (Caleb Williams of USC, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels of LSU, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy) fall into their lap.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan believes that Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll favor Daniels over the others.

When it comes to this year’s quarterbacks, Daniels is a name to keep an eye on, if he’s not among the top two picks with Williams. He is a player who is well-regarded within the organization and that multiple sources with connections to Schoen and Daboll believe would be an ideal fit in their offense. There is also interest in McCarthy, especially if he is available at No. 6.

Raanan outlines the two schools of thought running through 1925 Giants Drive. The first one is that they need to get a young quarterback to build around as Daniel Jones is becoming too injury-prone.

The second is that the team isn’t good enough to support a young quarterback right now and should concentrate on building around Jones and/or his successor.

“Do you want the heir apparent to Daniel or do you want to help Daniel? That’s what it boils down to,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said recently.

The odds of Daniels falling to No. 6 are getting slimmer by the day as the first three teams selecting in the draft (Chicago, Washington, and New England) have all ditched their starters from last season.

The fourth and fifth selections are held by Arizona and the L.A. Chargers, who have made it clear they would be willing to trade back with a team seeking a quarterback, such as Minnesota and Denver.

New York Giants, Jayden Daniels to meet after LSU Pro Day, per report

The New York Giants sent a strong contingency to the LSU Pro Day in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, led by general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

The main attraction is quarterback Jayden Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner who will participate in drills, including throwing.

Daniels did not do any on-field work at the recent NFL Combine, so this will be his first workout in front of potential draft suitors.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants are one of six teams set to meet with Daniels following the LSU Pro Day, a list that also includes the New England Patriots, Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.

The Giants reportedly dined with wide receiver Malik Nabers on Tuesday night and should also show some interest in several other key Tiger draft potentials, such as wide receiver Brian Thomas, Jr., linebacker Omar Speights and defensive linemen Jordan Jefferson and Maason Smith.

Giants select Daniel Jones replacement in latest Daniel Jeremiah mock

NFL Network draft analyst  Daniel Jeremiah  published his 2024 mock draft 2.0 on Tuesday and many New York Giants fans will be pleased with the pick.

Jeremiah has the Giants biting the bullet and selecting LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels — the reigning Heisman Trophy winner — with the 6th overall pick.

I don’t make trade projections in mock drafts this early in the process, which is why Daniels is still available at No. 6. I wouldn’t rule out the Giants trying to move up for a quarterback, but in this scenario, Daniels falls into their lap.

Jeremiah has four quarterbacks being taken in the first eight picks: USC’s Caleb Williams going first overall to the Chicago Bears with Drake Maye of North Carolina being taken second by the Washington Commanders.

The Giants then pulled the trigger on Daniels at No. 6 followed by the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy at No. 8.

Giant fans appear to be in favor of moving on from Daniel Jones at quarterback after five seasons of injuries and inconsistent play. He is under contract for three more seasons but the Giants can sever ties with him after this season with minimal salary cap consequences.

The Giant faithful can finally switch from Jack Daniels to Jayden on game days with the hopes they finally have an elite NFL quarterback to compete for a championship.

Jones has had his chances and the excuses are getting old. It is true the team has been a mess over the past decade but Jones has done little to turn the tide and has become the face of all that losing and ineptitude.

They would do themselves — and Jones — a service by going in a different direction at quarterback. Daniels would be a good start.

11 prospects New York Giants could be eyeing at 2024 NFL Combine

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Bo Nix, 23, is an experienced hand who has started an NCAA record 61 games at quarterback and set a college football high for completion percentage (77.45) in 2023.

He’s not the biggest or the fastest in this year’s class but he might be the most refined and NFL-ready.

This draft could see a run on quarterbacks early (go figure) and the 6th overall pick could end up being a huge chip for Schoen.

With Daniel Jones’ Giants future in the balance, Schoen will have to weigh whether a player such as Nix — if available — is better suited to lead Big Blue going forward.

Jayden Daniels becoming popular mock for Giants

Mock draft season is heating up and when it comes to the New York Giants, there is no consensus. Most insiders and experts have their own theories about what general manager Joe Schoen will do and precious few match up.

In our last mock draft round-up, the Giants seemed to focus heavily on offensive linemen and receivers — both wideouts and tight ends.

That trend continued over the past week with one small exception: A specific quarterback has become a bit more prevalent.

Here’s a round-up of the most recent mock drafts and who they have the Giants selecting.

From Draft Wire: No commentary

Matthew Dobbins-USA TODAY Sports

From Sports Illustrated:

The Giants gave Daniel Jones a big contract extension, but even before his torn ACL, Jones had struggled to prove himself as a true franchise passer. If Daniels is still on the board, it wouldn’t be shocking to see New York cut its losses and start over at QB.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

From CBS Sports:

Chicago sends its third-round pick (No. 75 overall) to New York in this slide back, and the Giants get Brock Bowers in the process. Win.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

From The Athletic:

With his size/speed profile and ability to play through contact, Odunze is a quarterback-friendly target with the tools to be a legitimate No. 1 option. The Giants haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since 2018, but Odunze might change that as a rookie.

I know there will be plenty of “Why not a quarterback?” questions. Though I think a player like Jayden Daniels is possible, drafting a quarterback in the top 10 is an ownership decision — and we know Giants ownership loves Daniel Jones. GM Joe Schoen has been on the road this fall to see all of the top quarterbacks, but I’ll go with the QB-friendly target as the answer to the team’s passing woes.

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

From NBC Sports:

The Giants are only tied to Daniel Jones from a financial perspective for one more season. If they are picking this high again in 2025, there’s a chance general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll aren’t making that selection.

The point I’m making is there should be some urgency to find an upgrade under center. Daniels’ electric running ability and vertical passing is a great fit with Daboll, who unlocked both of those aspects while working with Josh Allen a few years ago in Buffalo.

Michael Reaves/Getty Images

From The Sporting News:

The Giants know how valuable Andrew Thomas is as their stalwart starting left tackle but now should be aware that 2022 first-rounder Evan Neal is a bust. They can’t afford to maintain that shaky blocking especially when Alt, a big, nimble, powerful anchor is sitting right there for them.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

From Pro Football Network:

We’re already seeing Marvin Harrison Jr.’s draft stock drop a little bit with more people supporting guys like Rome Odunze and Keon Coleman, but New York’s fine with that. Whether you think Harrison is the best receiver or not, one thing’s for sure: the kid can ball.

The Giants already have a ton of potential in their receiver room, but it’s going to be tough to convince a fanbase that they don’t need a talent like Harrison. He has all of the tools necessary to be a great pro, and the Giants elevate the passing attack even if they don’t take a quarterback.

The Daily Advertiser

From The Draft Network:

The quicker New York moves on from Daniel Jones, the quicker they’ll get back on the track toward relevancy. Jayden Daniels is an electric dual-threat talent with the processing ability to dissect defenses at multiple levels and the linear speed to outrun NFL secondary defenders. He expands a playbook and will keep defensive coordinators up late at night.

Receivers begin to emerge for Giants in several mocks

The New York Giants have won back-to-back games, improving their record to 4-8 on the season. Those consecutive wins have cost them potential 2024 NFL draft positioning as they are currently slated to select sixth overall.

At No. 6, the Giants are likely out of the Caleb Williams and Drake Maye sweepstakes unless general manager Joe Schoen decides to trade up.

In most early mock drafts, trades are avoided. Accordingly, projecting who the Giants select has begun to vary greatly. Some are still sticking to quarterbacks but not all — we’ve seen wide receivers and offensive linemen creep in.

Here’s a round-up of the most recent mock drafts and who they have the Giants selecting.

SCOTT CLAUSE/USA TODAY Network / USA TODAY NETWORK

From The Athletic:

Over the past month, I think Nabers separated himself for several teams as WR2 in this draft. The only FBS pass catcher with 1,500-plus receiving yards in 2023, he also leads the country with 34 receptions of 20-plus yards. The only other college receiver with that many explosive catches over the last five years? Another LSU receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, who had 34 in 2019.

The Giants obviously still have high hopes for Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson, but adding Nabers gives the offense a legitimate No. 1 threat.

Matthew Dobbins-USA TODAY Sports

From CBS Sports:

Daniels is my pick for largest riser during the pre-draft process. Big recruit, super athletic, strong arm, two big seasons in the SEC. Yeah, it checks out.

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

From Sports Illustrated:

The Giants have plenty of needs, but nothing matters without the right quarterback. Yes, they just gave Daniel Jones a big contract extension, but he’ll be coming off a torn ACL, and his dead cap number will be manageable if they move on after 2024. Daniels has been the most dynamic player in all of college football this season, and his growth as a passer this season has launched him into the top-10 conversation.

Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports

From Walter Football:

I think the Giants would draft one of the top two quarterbacks in this class, but if both are off the board once they’re on the clock, they’d probably find some help for Daniel Jones.

Brian Thomas Jr. is a huge receiver with great athleticism and upside.

SCOTT CLAUSE/USA TODAY Network / USA TODAY NETWORK

From The 33rd Team:

LSU QB Jayden Daniels has stormed into the top-10 conversation with a Heisman-worthy performance in 2023. Showing the ability to win with his arm and his legs, Daniels has been one of college football’s most exciting quarterbacks and someone the New York Giants should consider. Daniels does not have the track record that Caleb Williams or Drake Maye has, so he likely won’t be considered ahead of them, but he has been more impressive than either of them in 2023.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

From PFF:

Fashanu is the top offensive tackle in the upcoming draft class and boasts elite size-movement skills. Drafting him to play opposite Andrew Thomas while kicking Neal inside could be the best vision for this New York offensive line.
