Seymour Stein, record executive who helped launch Madonna’s career, dead at 80

Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein died on Sunday at the age of 80 in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer, according to a statement from his family.

Stein helped the careers of singer Madonna, the rock band Talking Heads and many others during his career as a record executive.

He founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.

The New York City native worked summers as a teenager at Cincinnati-based King Records, which helped launch the career of singer James Brown. Stein also co-founded Sire Productions, which later became Sire Records, by his mid-20s.

He had been obsessed with the Billboard music charts since he was a child and developed a deep knowledge and appreciation of music.

He signed record deals with the Talking Heads, the Ramones and the Pretenders during the New Wave era in the 1970s and 1980s.

“Seymour’s taste in music is always a couple of years ahead of everyone else’s,” Talking Heads manager Gary Kurfirst told the Rock Hall around the time of Stein’s induction.

Stein was also known for his discovery of Madonna in the early 1980s when he heard her demo tape.

“I liked Madonna’s voice, I liked the feel, and I liked the name Madonna. I liked it all and played it again,” he wrote in his memoir “Siren Song.”

Stein was hospitalized with a heart infection when he first heard about Madonna, but he was so excited to meet her that he had her come to his room.

“She was all dolled up in cheap punky gear, the kind of club kid who looked absurdly out of place in a cardiac ward,” he wrote. “She wasn’t even interested in hearing me explain how much I liked her demo. ‘The thing to do now,’ she said, ‘is sign me to a record deal.’”

Other names Sire had signed include Ice T, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, the Replacements, Echo and the Bunnymen, Lou Reed and Brian Wilson.

Stein was briefly married to record promoter and real estate executive Linda Adler before divorcing in the 1970s.

He and Adler had two children, filmmaker Mandy Stein and Samantha Lee Jacobs, who died of brain cancer in 2013.

Stein came out as gay after his divorce and never remarried.

“I am beyond grateful for every minute our family spent with him, and that the music he brought to the world impacted so many people’s lives in a positive way,” Mandy Stein said in a statement Sunday.

Five dream guests for ESPN’s Kay-Rod cast for peak ‘mischief’

Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay did not wish to name specific dream guests for their ESPN Kay-Rod broadcasts, so we are taking it upon ourselves to do so for them.

On a conference call to promote their alternative “Sunday Night Baseball” telecasts for the upcoming season, The Post asked Kay and Rodriguez about who they would most want to have on the show.

“I like mischief,” Kay said.

“So anybody that could rile up Alex would be a dream guest. People from his past, not to name names, but I thought it was great to have Derek Jeter last year, and there was a lot of anticipation for that.

“If we could get people from Alex’s past, maybe people that he dated, not naming names, I think that would be fun.”

Since they declined to name specifics, here are some guests who would achieve the goal of peak awkwardness.

ESPN’s Kay-Rod broadcast kicks off with Rangers-Phillies on Sunday night on ESPN2.

Ben Affleck

Affleck is a die-hard Red Sox fan, and could be fun guest for the rivalry with the Yankees.

This also buries the lead, that he is married to Jennifer Lopez, A-Rod’s ex-fiancée, for the second time.

Because Jeter has already gone on the program, Affleck might be the next person out there who would make their spot appointment TV.

Madonna

Madonna falls into the the list of people who A-Rod has dated in the past — at least they were rumored to have in 2008.

She has a connection to baseball, having starred in “A League of Their Own” in 1992.

Bronson Arroyo

During the 2004 ALCS between the Yankees and Red Sox, A-Rod stirred up a big controversy when he swatted the ball out of Arroyo’s glove after hitting a slow roller down the first base line.

“I thought it was a little unprofessional,” Arroyo said at the time.

For his part, A-Rod explained what he should’ve done differently.

“I knew [Arroyo] was coming. I knew the line belongs to me. Maybe looking back, I should have tried to run him over,” Rodriguez said of the incident.

Dallas Braden

Braden is another former MLB pitcher who previously beefed with A-Rod.

In a 2010 game between the Yankees and A’s, A-Rod jogged over the mound to return to first base after a foul ball went out of play.

“This is my mound, my rubber,” Braden told the slugger.

A couple weeks later, Rodriguez was not letting the controversy bother him.

“It’s tempting to sit back here and go back and forth with the media for the next three months, but I’m not going to do that,” he said at the time.

“For us to be thinking about him and Oakland is a disservice to us.”

Mike Francesa

Now we have to turn the tables and create some “mischief” for Kay.

Francesa and Kay competed against each other in afternoon drive, for WFAN and ESPN New York respectively, for years.

Things grew especially fractious when Kay’s simulcast replaced Francesa’s on YES Network, and Kay celebrated the occasion by throwing a Diet Coke — known forever as Francesa’s beverage of choice — in the trash can.

From then on, there was not just competition for ratings on the airwaves, but a war of words that would endure for a long time.

A-Rod also has a history with Francesa, having infamously done an interview with the radio legend on WFAN in 2013 in which he denied steroid use and called former MLB commissioner Bud Selig the “man from Milwaukee.”

KayRod airs eight times throughout the 2023 MLB season, at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The first edition comes on April 2 when the Phillies play at the Rangers.

Madonna confirms romance with new boyfriend Josh Popper

Madonna has seemingly taken the plunge and gone Instagram official with her new boyfriend Josh Popper.

The “Like A Prayer” singer, 64, has been cozying up to her new beau in recent weeks and was even spotted cheering on the 29-year-old at his boxing match in New York City this week.

Taking to her Instagram Story, The Queen of Pop, who recently split from model Andrew Darnell, shared a bizarre kissing pic with the athlete.

“Killers who are partying,” she captioned the pic, in which she was dressed as Queen Esther at a Purim party.

In the snap, both Madonna and Popper are masked and dressed all in black.

Page Six exclusively revealed she sat ringside during Popper’s southpaw’s fight at Manhattan’s Classic Car Club.

The superstar kept a low profile in a dressed-down outfit and ducked out as soon as Popper’s fight was over.

The Daily Mail was the first to report that the pop sensation was dating Popper, who is 35 years her junior.

Days after revealing her “new face” at the 2023 Grammy Awards last month, the “Material Girl” hitmaker shared glimpses of the boxer on social media.

In the since-expired snaps, the singer could be seen cuddling up to her heavily tattooed sparring partner.

“In a male driven culture, there are always exceptions,” the 7-time Grammy winner wrote captioned her Instagram Story.

“Hard to ignore the reality… that most women get demolished.”

Madonna recently called it quits with Darnell, 23, with whom she struck up a romance in September.

The pair met on a photoshoot soon after the singer split last year from 28-year-old Ahlamalik Williams, the backup dancer with whom she had a three-year relationship.

After Madge called time on her romance with Darnell, he seemingly moved on with someone closer to his own age, a source recently told Page Six.

The singer recently made headlines over her “swollen” face at the Grammys, which she last month claimed has now gone down and she’s back to looking “cute.”

“Look how cute i am now that swelling from surgery has gone down. Lol 😂,” she tweeted last month.

The quip came weeks after her appearance became a topic of discussion when she got up on stage to introduce Kim Petras.

Madonna, 64, hooking up with 29-year-old boxer Josh Popper

She’s hung up on another younger man.

Insiders have revealed that Madonna has a new lover in her life: 29-year-old boxer Josh Popper, according to the Daily Mail.

Popper is training one of Madonna’s children at NYC gym Bredwinners, according to the report, and has also starred on this season of Bravo’s reality TV show about the Hamptons, “Summer House.”

The 64-year-old split from her latest boy toy, skateborder and model Andrew Darnell, 23, just a few days ago, according to Paper Magazine.

On Popper’s Instagram page, he posted a series of photos of them together at his boxing gym a little over two weeks ago. In one of the snaps, the Queen of Pop can be seen wearing a long, black coat with her arm around Popper’s, her mouth touching his bicep.

The “Vogue” icon — never one to “bow down” to critics of her age-defying style — also follows Popper on Instagram.

The star is reportedly dating 29-year-old boxing coach, Josh Popper.

The Post has reached out to Madonna’s reps for comment.

The eternal “Material Girl” also shared the same photo of her hugging Popper’s arm in an Instagram story, writing in the caption, “In a male driven culture, there are always exceptions,” and followed up with another snap of her clutching a boxing bag, typing, “Hard to ignore the reality… that most women get demolished.”

On the website for his boxing gym, they describe Popper as a “lifelong athlete and a full-time coach.” They also added that, “Josh is no stranger to sports, but there is something about boxing that transcends his love for movement.”

The two have not announced their romance publicly and have yet to confirm or deny it.

Madonna made headlines recently for her appearance at the 2023 Grammy Awards, after she showed up looking “unrecognizable” — according to vocal fans — during her speech introducing Sam Smith’s performance with Kim Petras.

A few weeks later, after publicly shouting down her critics on social media, Madonna tweeted that her surgical swelling had gone down — declaring that she looked “cute” as she showed off a close-up of her face on the social media platform.

During a recent interview on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show,” singer Pink admitted that she believes that the Queen of Pop “doesn’t like her.”

“She tried to kind of play me on ‘Regis and Kelly,’ and I’m not the one, so [it] didn’t work out,” the singer claimed, before declaring that she will always love the influential Madonna, no matter what.

Meanwhile, Madonna is currently mourning the death of her brother, Anthony Ciccone, who passed away on Feb. 24. A source told Page Six that she had been footing the bill for her siblings’ time in a Michigan rehab center.

Inside Madonna’s daughter Mercy’s 17th birthday celebration

Madonna’s daughter Mercy is 17!

The singer gave a glimpse of the teenager’s fun-filled birthday celebration via her Instagram Stories Monday.

“Happy birthday Chifundo!” Madonna, 64, captioned party photos. “We love you!! My precious beautiful talented daughter.”

The birthday girl posed in front of silver balloons spelling out her name as she rocked a floral dress.

Mercy’s celebration also featured blue and purple balloons, as well as matching flowers and black candles.

The teen appeared to go out to dinner with her family members, ending her night at home singing Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” around a table.

Mercy’s brother David, 17, and twin sisters, Stella and Estere, 10, helped her ring in the special day.

Madonna’s other children, Lourdes, 26, and Rocco, 22, seemingly were not present at the party.

The Grammy winner recently spoke candidly about being a mother of six kids, admitting she is “struggling to understand how” to parent them.

“Growing up with a mother like me is a challenge,” she said in her cover story for three different European editions of Vanity Fair last week.

“It has been the most difficult, the hardest battle,” Madonna added, calling motherhood a “work of art” for which no one is given “a manual.”

Mercy’s siblings helped her ring in her 17th year.

“You have to learn from mistakes,” the Queen of Pop explained. “It is a profession that requires a lot of time. And it is exhausting because there is never rest.”

The interview came one year after Madonna’s eldest child called her a “control freak” of a parent.

“My precious beautiful talented daughter,” Madonna gushed.

“She has controlled me my whole life,” Lourdes alleged to Interview magazine in October 2021. “I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school.”

The model joked that she inherited her mom’s “control issues” but not her “work ethic,” referring to Madonna as the “hardest worker” she’s ever seen.

Madonna gave birth to Lourdes and Rocco in 1996 and 2000 with trainer Carlos Leon and director Guy Ritchie, respectively.

She and Ritchie adopted David in 2006. After their divorce two years later, the “Like a Virgin” singer went on to adopt Mercy, Stella and Estere.

Madonna shares cryptic messages with tattoo she got to honor her mother

Madonna’s got some fresh ink to honor her late mother.

The “Like a Virgin” hitmaker showed off her new wrist tattoo on Instagram Thursday, revealing the ink job she got to remember their special bond.

The three snaps shared on the 64-year-old singer’s Instagram Story show an “X” above the word “Maman,” which is French for mother. The tattoo also includes a broken heart.

The first image shows a glowing Madonna holding up her wrist over her head with the caption, “Broken hearts club.”

In the second snap, the seven-time Grammy winner’s wrist tattoo was seemingly smeared in blood as she wrote, “We all bleed the same color.”

“All mothers get their heart broken,” she added.

Madonna is twice divorced. Her first marriage to Sean Penn was from 1985 to 1989. Her last marriage was to Guy Richie, which lasted from 2000 until 2008.

Madonna took her next post to a new level, spearing what appears to be blood over the tattoo.

She’s also the mother of six children; her oldest daughter, Lourdes, who she had with Carlos Leon, is 25, and Rocco who just turned 22 on August 11, who she had with Guy Ritchie and her adopted children David Banda and Mercy James, both 16, and her two twins, Estere and Stella Ciccone, 10.

Madonna was five years old when her mother passed away from breast cancer on December 1, 1963, at the age of 30.

Madonna candidly admitted in a recent Youtube video she regrets both of her marriages but has found solace with a sex “obsession.”

During her 64th birthday, Madge found herself making out with different women in Italy for the sake of her Instagram.
