Naughty Dog Has Moved on From Uncharted, Co-President Neil Druckmann Confirms

Developer Naughty Dog seems to be done with Uncharted. That’s according to its co-President Neil Druckmann, who confirmed in a Buzzfeed interview, that having put their “final brushstroke” on the story with the insanely popular Uncharted 4, the team is ready to move on. That fate could also befall The Last of Us franchise if the company decides not to proceed with a third mainline entry. Druckmann praises his publisher Sony for not forcing them to churn out a sequel and is okay with finishing the story with the “very strong ending,” as seen in The Last of Us Part II.

“[Sony] have supported us every step of the way to follow our passions — meaning that just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case,” Druckmann explained in the interview. “For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.” That said, he wasn’t fully clear on whether he was referring to solely the series stalwart Nathan Drake’s story, or the franchise as a whole. Naughty Dog last ported Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection to PC, which included the aforementioned mainline Uncharted 4 and the spin-off title focused on Chloe Frazer, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The former sold over 15 million copies on the PS4, making it the highest-selling Uncharted title in the franchise.

Druckmann also weighed in on a potential The Last of Us Part 3, claiming that for now, the studio is mainly focusing on their sights on the untitled The Last of Us standalone multiplayer experience, revealed at Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, last year. “We’ve been pretty open that the next Last of Us game is going to be this multiplayer experience, where you’ll be able to enter the world of The Last of Us with your friend and get to experience the tension and the brutality of that world — and a brand new story and cast of characters that live in another city that we haven’t seen yet in the world of The Last of Us,” he said. The Last of Us Part 3, however, isn’t on the priority list, and the studio has zero pressure on deciding what to do with the story.

Earlier this month, Druckmann claimed that he was intrigued by the minimalist storytelling in FromSoftware’s award-winning magnum opus, Elden Ring. Going forward, he plans on experimenting with this style — a far cry from PlayStation’s first-party entries, which mainly rely on cinematics for storytelling. “To me, right now, that’s some of the best joy I get out of games that trust their audience to figure things out,” he told The Washington Post. “[Games] that don’t hold your hand, that’s the stuff I’m really intrigued by going forward.”

The Last of Us is currently in the spotlight, thanks to the successful launch of its live-action adaptation for HBO, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles. Even Uncharted received a Tom Holland-led live-action film earlier this year, which despite failing on a critical level, managed a good box office collection. The film grossed a worldwide total of $401.7 million (about Rs. 3,277 crore).

Returnal PC Release Date Set for February 15, System Requirements Revealed

Returnal is headed to PC next month, and with that, Sony has unveiled new features and system requirements for the upcoming port. Developer Housemarque and porter Climax Studios have partnered to bring the once PS5-exclusive roguelike to PC on February 15. Returnal on PC comes with support for Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR upscaling techniques, in addition to DualSense compatibility, ensuring haptic feedback when ripping through the haunting alien planets in the game. Returnal is now available to pre-order on Steam and the Epic Games Store at Rs. 3,999.

Returnal PC new features

Akin to past PlayStation–PC ports, Returnal boasts a slew of enhancements and customisable settings. To begin, the aforementioned Nvidia and AMD’s upscaling methods should allow players to dial up their framerate without making sacrifices in the resolution and/or visual quality. Being a third-person, bullet hell roguelike, Returnal is littered with tonnes of moving objects that could heavily stress your GPU — making this feature quite significant. Additionally, support for NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling) has also been added for players who desire better performance, but don’t have the hardware to support DLSS or FSR.

Returnal also derives ray-traced shadows from its original PS5 kin. However, in the PC version, co-developer Climax Studios has added support for ray-traced reflections as well. “This will make the contrast of a dark setting and neon bullets pop out even more than before,” the PlayStation blog notes. Returnal on PC will also enable unlocked framerates, support for ultra-wide monitors ranging between 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios, and performance metrics — FPS counter, a gauge for measuring GPU and CPU usage, and a latency tracker.

All of this comes packaged with Dolby Atmos Audio, which extends its auditory flair to plugged-in DualSense controllers. As expected, support for keyboard and mouse controls is included as well, with a wide range of customisation options to tailor your needs. Returnal PC will also feature an FOV (field-of-view) slider, which helps adjust how much of your surroundings can be seen on screen.

As for co-op mode, Housemarque has stressed that cross-play with players on the PS5 console is not supported.

Returnal PC system requirements

The PC system requirements list comes courtesy of PlayStation, with the common requirements being Windows 10 64-bit (version 1903) and at least 60GB of free storage space on an SSD.

  • RAM: 32GB DDR4
  • Resolution: 4K at 60fps, at Epic settings — upscaling options are recommended

Returnal PC pre-order price and bonuses

Pre-orders for the PC version of Returnal are now live, offering early access to some in-game items. The tools are otherwise obtainable through story progression, with the pre-order bonus simply giving players a headstart — akin to what you would expect from a New Game+ mode. The included items are an Electropylon Driver weapon, a Hollowseeker weapon, one Reflex Stimulant, one Pulsating Mass artefact, and one Adrenaline Booster. Additionally, linking your Steam account to PSN (PlayStation Network) unlocks two in-game outfits — a Prototype and a Tactical suit.

As stated above, Returnal costs Rs. 3,999 across Steam and Epic Games Store. There’s only one edition for this game, and it launches February 15 on PC.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Life is Strange Lead PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe Games for January 2023

Devil May Cry 5 and two games from the Life is Strange series lead the January lineup of free games coming to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium catalogue. Starting January 17, higher-tier PS Plus subscribers gain access to the former critically-acclaimed title, where you hack and slash through a hellish incursion when the seeds of a “demon tree” take root in Red Grave City. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will be available to play on PS5 — the PS4 version will also make its way to PS Plus Extra subscribers. Keeping in line with the action affair, Back 4 Blood also arrives on the platform. The game lets you team up with up to three other players and hunt down zombies, work together to gather resources, and survive increasingly challenging missions. Back 4 Blood will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5.

If narrative-focused games are your jam, then do check out the award-winning, episodic adventure Life is Strange. In it, you play Max Caulfield, a photography senior who discovers the ability to rewind time and gets entangled in a mystery involving several missing teenage girls in Arcadia Bay. January’s PS Plus higher-tier offerings follow it up with the prequel, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, which charts the tale of a 16-year-old rebel Chloe Price, who forms an unlikely friendship with the uber-popular Rachel Amber. Both Life is Strange titles will be up on PS4. In a similar vein, this month, we’ve also got Erica, an FMV (full-motion video) interactive thriller, where you shape the choices and consequences of the titular character, who is plagued by nightmares of her father’s murder.

In Dragon Ball FighterZ, you can build your dream team of characters and sharpen your skills to master tag-team combinations in 3v3 fights. The included story mode pits you against Android 21, a brand-new character, whose creation was supervised by mangaka Akira Toriyama himself. Then, strap in your wingsuit and feel free to blow up structures in the action-packed Just Cause 4: Reloaded, as you cycle between multiple weapons and vehicles.

Sony unveiled the list on its PlayStation Blog, revealing all the new games available to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe members in January (PS Plus Deluxe is known as PS Plus Premium in select markets). Last month’s catalogue included three Far Cry games, alongside Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, to name just a few.

Here’s the complete list of free games available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium subscribers in January 2023.

The blog post also mentions the PS Plus Classics Catalogue, exclusive to the PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium members. This month brings Syphon Filter 3, Star Wars Demolition, and Hot Shots Golf 2.

Late last month, Sony unveiled the three free games available to all PS Plus subscribers in January. Until February 6, PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe members can add EA’s space-set Souls-like adventure Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Bethesda’s first multiplayer venture Fallout 76, and Axiom Verge 2, an 8-bit adventure where you explore a sprawling ancient alien world, to their libraries.

PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription starts in India from Rs. 849 per month, whereas the Extra subscription begins at Rs. 749 per month. Sony is currently holding a sale for its PS Plus plans as well, ending tonight, January 13, where you can get 12 months of PS Plus Extra and Deluxe for Rs. 2,999 and Rs. 3,749, respectively. The discount is only available to new users while existing subscribers save 30 percent when upgrading.

Keeping the PS5 in Vertically Upright Position Will Not Damage It, Report Clarifies

Keeping your PS5 upright is completely fine, news outlet Wololo has clarified. A report from a few weeks ago suggested that placing the current gen console in a vertical position was prone to do internal harm by causing the liquid metal to leak down the sides of the APU, and eventually spread onto the motherboard. The outlet has now retracted its statement, claiming that while the problem can still occur, there is “no evidence” that it will happen to consoles fresh out of the box, devoid of tampering. This would mainly affect those who had their PS5s repaired recently, so you might need to be cautious in how you position it. Fresh PS5s are not in any danger when placed vertically.

Wololo stated that the initial report had to do with a misunderstanding on their part, where they “thought” that the liquid metal problem happened on an untampered, in-box PS5 unit. “What he [The Cod3r — hardware Youtuber who first brought the design flaw to attention] said (and meant) was PS5s that had not been opened (the actual console!) by other repair shops prior to him,” Wololo tweeted. If the issue indeed was severe, it would paint Sony in a bad picture, as the company continues to advertise the product in an upright position. Sony made it clear previously that you could orient a PS5 both vertically as well as horizontally, thanks to a plastic base that clips onto the console’s outer white shell.

That said, both TheCod3r and Wololo hold onto their claim that standing a PS5 vertically is indeed risky, eventually leading to an uneven spread of liquid metal intended to help cool the APU. However, there isn’t widespread evidence to back this claim. For what it’s worth, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan announced during CES 2023 that the PS5 had sold over 30 million units worldwide. He also claimed that December — Christmas season — was the biggest sales month for the console yet and that players should now have a much “easier time” finding a unit from local retailers. It is still unclear if this applies to India, where PS5s are made available in batches that go out of stock in mere minutes.

Back in September, Sony quietly revamped the internals of newly revised PS5 models, which first hit the markets in Australia. The new units sported a CFI-1200 number and proved to be 200 grams lighter than the original CFI-1100 variant, as confirmed by tech YouTuber Austin Evans. The new PS5 also drew less power and saw changes to the heatsink and included an updated motherboard.

CES 2023: Sony unveils New Project Leonardo Accessibility Controller Kit for PS5

Project Leonardo, PS5’s latest accessibility controller kit, has been announced at Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 presentation. The company shared at the event that it was working on a new controller, designed to help players with disabilities play “easily, more comfortably, and for longer periods.” At the presentation, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan promised an out-of-the-box experience, providing a robust kit of customisable parts and a range of software options on the PS5. It is being developed with contributions from accessibility experts and organisations such as AbleGamers, SpecialEffect and Stack Up. Currently, there is no release window or pricing details for PS5’s codename Project Leonardo.

As per PlayStation’s official blog post, Project Leonardo is built to address common challenges faced by players with “limited motor control,” which includes difficulties in holding a controller for long periods, finger positioning, and being unable to accurately press small-sized buttons. This new kit puts all those buttons onto two circular pads which lie flat — one representing each half of a standard PS5 DualSense controller, with an expanded area of pressure points. Sony describes the controller kit as a “canvas for gamers” since it’s fully customisable to personal preferences, with the package including a variety of analogue stick caps (one with grippy texture as well) and buttons of different shapes and sizes. Furthermore, one could also adjust the distance of the stick from the gamepad.

Similar to the PS5’s upcoming DualSense Edge controllers, Project Leonardo comes with a button mapping feature, including the ability to map multiple buttons to the same function. “Conversely, players can map two functions (like ‘R2′ + ‘L2′) onto the same button,” it adds. Players can store their programmed button settings as profiles — up to three can be saved — for easy selection when switching between game types. For instance, a first-person shooter might require a lower camera sensitivity for accuracy, unlike a third-person action game. So now, you can simply press the profile button and swap on the go instead of heading into settings.

Project Leonardo can be used in pairs (as stated before), standalone, or connected to a PS5 DualSense controller to expand your canvas and fit particular gaming needs. Its four 3.5mm AUX ports help expand the functionality, allowing players to integrate external switches or third-party analogue sticks — all of which can be dynamically connected/ disconnected and button mapped. “Because players can customise Project Leonardo according to their needs, there is no one ‘right’ form factor. We want to empower them to create their own configurations,” So Morimoto, Designer, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in the blog post.

Sony’s first-party games already dominate the video game accessibility space, by offering a robust suite of options to help those suffering from motor and visual challenges. Both The Last of Us Part II and God of War Ragnarök were awarded in the ‘Innovation in Accessibility’ category at The Game Awards 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Project Leonardo is currently in development, with no word on a launch window or pricing.

Tim Cook Reveals That iPhones Use Sony Camera Sensors, Confirms Decade-Long Partnership

Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted in a recent tweet that the Cupertino company has used Sony image sensors in the iPhone for over a decade. This is a rare confirmation from Apple regarding the specific components featured on its devices. Specifications for the company’s iPhone models usually only include the camera resolution, aperture, and other generic information. There have been several rumours over the years suggesting that Sony was providing camera sensors for the iPhone. Even the iPhone 15 is expected to include a state-of-the-art image sensor from Sony.

Cook shared a tweet on Tuesday revealing that Sony has been providing the camera sensors for the iPhone for over a decade. It also included an image of Cook on a tour of the Kumamoto facility along with Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida. This admission has seemingly laid rest to the plethora of rumours speculating that the iPhone used Sony camera sensors.

According to a recent report, the iPhone 15 series could boast a state-of-the-art image Sony image sensor. It is said to be capable of capturing a person’s face clearly even against bright backlighting. Sony has reportedly included double the saturation signal level in each pixel than conventional sensors.

This rumoured Sony camera sensor can reportedly capture increased light and reduce overexposure or underexposure. However, Sony is yet to put these sensors into production. They will reportedly be manufactured at the company’s Nagasaki plant. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 series in the second half of 2023.

Sony reportedly controlled around 44 percent of the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor market in 2021, meanwhile, Samsung came second with 18.5 percent. The company has is said to have planned to spend about JPY 900 billion (roughly Rs. 54,000 crore) throughout 2023 in the hopes of gaining control of about 60 percent of the CMOS image sensor market by 2025.

Gran Turismo 7 PC: Team ‘Considering’ a PC Port for the PlayStation Exclusive

Gran Turismo series lead Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that he’s “considering” and “looking into” porting the racing franchise to PC. Speaking to GTPlanet during the Gran Turismo World Finals, Yamauchi expressed some concerns about getting the “finely tuned” Playstation exclusive title to consistently run at 4K 60fps across all platforms. While not explicitly mentioned, he seems to be referring to the latest Gran Turismo 7, which is heavy on the hardware, featuring ray-traced lighting and high-resolution textures that emulate real life. That said, while the PlayStation 5 is powerful, it’s nothing in front of most PCs. That’s proven by the fact that most new launches do not offer 4K 60fps with ray-tracing on PS5.

Launched on PS4 and PS5, Gran Turismo 7’s arrival on PC would mark a huge milestone for the series, which for the past 25 years of life has remained exclusive to the PlayStation lineup of consoles. Yamauchi explains that simply porting the title is “not a very easy subject” — which makes sense as developer Polyphony Digital would have to include several graphics options and quality-of-life changes to cater to PC, in addition to considering keyboard and mouse players. As for commercial performance, Forza Horizon 5 has been played by over 20 million PC and Xbox players since its launch in late 2021, which goes to show that there’s still a strong market for the racing genre on PC.

Gran Turismo 7 Review: Passion Without Flair

The last few years have been rife with several PlayStation exclusives porting to PC, including Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, the recently dropped Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and more. During an investor presentation in May, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) president Jim Ryan said that the company expects half of its annual launches to be on PC and mobile by 2025. “By expanding to PC and mobile, and it must be said… also to live services, we have the opportunity to move from a situation of being present in a very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market, to being present pretty much everywhere,” Ryan said (via VGC).

The Gran Turismo series is widely revered for its visual fidelity and slew of licensed cars that feature accurate driving physics. An update to Gran Turismo 7, released last week, adds the ability to sell vehicles in the garage, allowing players to remove spare cars in exchange for credit rewards. Dubbed ‘Car Valuation Service,’ the feature takes into account changing market trends, tuning state, and vehicle condition to determine the right price. The patch also added the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta circuit and three new cars: BMW M2 Competition ‘18, Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth ‘87, and Nissan Silvia K’s Aero (S14) ‘96.

Elsewhere, the Gran Turismo universe — if you can call it that — is expanding onto the big screen with a live-action adaptation. Filming began earlier this month, with a premise that bases itself on the inspiring story of a real-life Gran Turismo player Jann Mardenborough, who rose the ranks through a series of gaming contests, and ultimately joined the big leagues as a professional driver. The film stars Archie Madekwe (Midsommar) in the lead as the young fledging, who will be coached by David Harbour’s (Stranger Things) character — a retired racecar driver. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and is eyeing a theatrical release on August 11, 2023.

There is no word on whether Gran Turismo PC development has begun — Yamauchi’s comments suggest it’s too early right now.

Sony Files Patent for Tracking Digital Collectibles in Games Using NFTs

Sony, in a patent published recently, suggests it’s planning to feature blockchain technology in games in the future. That patent, which was filed by the company back in 2021, specifically lists a system and method that will track “digital assets,” and employs language commonly associated with blockchain-related products such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In relation to video games, the patent’s description refers to digital assets as in-game items such as characters. Interestingly, it also lists digital media that represents a game, such as a trailer or photo.

The patent, which Eurogamer first spotted, is called “Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger,” and it seems Sony is using “digital assets” as a broad term to include a range of possible token-tracked items.

In the patent, Sony says these assets may include anything from characters and in-game items to specific moments captured via screenshots and video grabs. If there was any doubt that the patent referred to NFTs and blockchain technology, the remaining description in the patent puts that to rest.

“A unique token for the digital asset can include a unique identifier and metadata identifying properties of the digital asset,” reads the general description. “Changes to properties of the digital asset, such as ownership, visual appearance, or metadata, can be identified in a request to update the history.”

While the patent is definitely blockchain related, the concept of “digital collectibles” outside of the NFT and blockchain space is not new to Sony. The company recently launched a loyalty program known as PlayStation Stars, which provides digital representations of items from video games.

Considering that the patent was applied for in May 2021 when there was increasing public interest in NFTs, and that there is currently no official announcement from the company on its plans, it is unclear if there are any ongoing developments on NFTs in video games from Sony.

PS5 India Restock: PlayStation 5 Horizon Forbidden West Bundle Pre-Orders Reportedly to Go Live on November 11

PS5’s November restock is reportedly this Friday. As per games analyst Rishi Alwani, Sony has confirmed pre-orders for their next-gen console in India, which is set to go live on November 11 at 12pm noon. This time, the company is distributing both Digital and Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 5 systems, albeit both variants are restricted to bundles. This time, the PS5 restock will only be available as a Horizon Forbidden West-themed bundle, akin to the August restock, though the prices have now increased. The PS5 Digital Edition Forbidden West bundle is priced at Rs. 48,490, while the beefier disc-equipped PS5 Forbidden West bundle will cost you Rs. 58,990. Currently, there are no details on individual units in stock.

This would be the second time Sony has restocked the Horizon Forbidden West PS5 bundles in India. Previously, both the digital and disc version bundles were available at Rs. 43,990 and Rs. 53,990, respectively. However, late last week, Sony India raised the prices for its next-gen console by 10 and 12.5 percent respectively, resulting in the updated, higher price point for the bundles. A standalone PS5 Digital Edition now costs Rs. 44,990, while the 4K Blu-ray-equipped PS5 is now priced at Rs. 54,990.

It is worth mentioning that while the image posted by Alwani has a Sony Center label on it, the official ShopatASC website has yet to update its pre-order banner. For now, it only displays the newly revised prices for both PS5 variants — its subsequent accessories have not undergone a price change. Even GamesTheShop has not posted any pre-order details on its social media handles, nor has it updated the banner on its homepage. If true, given what we have seen in the past, the next-gen console should be available for pre-order across Amazon, Croma, e2z Store, Flipkart, Game Loot, GamesTheShop, Reliance Digital, ShopatASC, and Vijay Sales. These pre-order campaigns function similarly to flash sales, on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you better be quick.

Getting hold of a PS5 has long been a struggle worldwide — thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in global chip shortages and inventory struggles. The November 11 PlayStation 5 restock would be the second time the next-gen console has been made available in India as a Horizon Forbidden West bundle. Prior to that, Indian gamers were treated to a Gran Turismo 7 bundle.

If you do manage to pre-order PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, it should reach you in about 14 days, given what we’ve seen in the past. The Sony Center website, where the posted image seems to have been sourced from, still shows details for the October pre-order campaign, so we don’t have an exact shipping date yet.

Renault, Google Expand Partnership in Software Services for Future Vehicles

Renault and Google said on Tuesday that they are expanding their partnership in software services for future Renault vehicles, adding that Google will become the preferred cloud supplier to the French automaker. The partnership with Google will also help Renault accelerate its “end-to-end digital transformation, from the design of the car to its market launch through its production,” Renault Chief Executive Luca de Meo said in a statement.

Automakers and technology companies including Sony, Apple and Google, have been working to develop ways to build future cars into platforms more like smartphones, with billable services where key updates are wireless.

On Tuesday, AFP reported that the automaker will pitch investors on its planned green revamp, with two spin-offs. Renault will announce a new EV unit and a subsidiary for thermal and hybrid assets. The EV market is expected to grow rapidly in response to consumers’ worries about climate change, putting pressure on manufacturers to develop fewer polluting products.

The European Union last month agreed to phase out new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035, a move set to turbo-charge the production of electric prototypes on the continent, according to the report. The flagship division of the carmaker’s reorganisation is Ampere, a split-off expected to employ around 10,000 staff in France and produce electric vehicles in the north. It plans to invite investment in Ampere but would remain the majority shareholder.

Renault also intends to combine its technological, manufacturing, and research and development activities for its hybrid and internal-combustion vehicles in a subsidiary called “Horse”. The subsidiary is expected to employ an estimated 19,000 people across Europe, China and South America, according to the report.
