Samsung Showcases a Prototype ‘Flex in and Out’ 360-Degree Foldable Display: Report

Samsung Display has reportedly developed a 360-degree rotating display. According to a report, the foldable display prototype, first showcased at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, can be folded in both directions to a full 360-degree range. Samsung Display (a Samsung subsidiary which makes its displays) calls it the “Flex in and out” display and while it’s not a new form factor when it comes to foldable devices, it sure has some interesting use cases. Samsung had showcased several display prototypes at CES 2023, including a new Flex Hybrid display which both folds and slides simultaneously.

According to a report in The Verge, Samsung recently showed off this prototype display at CES 2023. The “Flex in and out” display, as its name aptly describes, can fold both inwards and outwards. This means that the display can open up like unfolding a newspaper or fold outwards and wrap itself around the device, like the hardcover of a book.

The report claims that the display showcased also utilises the water-drop hinge design, which makes the inwards and outward folding mechanism possible. This new hinge, which holds the display in a tear drop shape when folded inwards, is quite different from the current one used in Samsung‘s outgoing Galaxy Fold models. The brand claims that the new hinge design, apart from leaving a much less visible crease, will also help reduce stress on the foldable display, which should in theory help with long-term reliability.

The “Flex in and out” display also appears to be attached to a functional device with a software interface and in appearance closely resembles the currently available Galaxy Fold models. So, it is a possibility that Samsung could bring it to the upcoming Galaxy Fold model which, going by tradition, should be announced in August this year. The Verge mentions that Samsung did showcase a similar display, but with multiple inward and outward folds at an earlier event held in Korea.

A dual function fold in and fold out display primarily reduces the need for a second external display, which is often used when the device is folded. This is possible, as the internal display can double up as the external one when folded outwards, where the device can be placed on one side on a surface, such as a table. While this design has been experimented with in the past, it was shot down mainly because foldable displays weren’t durable when exposed back then. If Samsung does go ahead with this new hinge and foldable display for its next Fold model, it will reduce the need to have a secondary external display, unless Samsung expects the user to keep the display folded inwards and protected by two outer clamshells, when in pockets or in storage.

CES 2023: Lenovo Project Chronos Concept With Wearable-Free Motion Capture Technology Unveiled

Lenovo unveiled its new Project Chronos concept at CES 2023, which is a new motion capture system that does not require a dedicated wearable device. The new device is a prototype from the Chinese PC manufacturer. According to the official description, Project Chronos is a “glasses-free, full-body movement-driven experience.” Simply put, users do not need to wear a specialised headset/glasses or use motion capture activated controllers to use the technology. This is similar to Acer and Asus’ recent announcements of glass-free 3D solutions, but the focus here is on motion capture instead of 3D gaming.

According to the company, Project Chronos uses RGB depth cameras to simulate user actions in virtual reality (VR). Following this, the device outputs to an external display via DisplayPort or HDMI. Lenovo has said that Project Chronos will be HDMI compatible, despite the fact that its units lack specialised HDMI ports.

The concept device has three DisplayPort connections as well as four mini DisplayPorts. Chronos also has a twin 6W speaker system and a camera that can rotate 180 degrees. Lenovo promises that the device will make it “easier than ever before for users to enter 3D-rendered virtual environments.”

The Lenovo Project Chronos is powered by an Intel Core i7 Raptor Lake series processor. It also includes a discrete GPU, up to 32GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage. The device runs Windows 10 and comes pre-loaded with an in-house Chronos. This model weighs approximately 3.54 kilogrammes and measures 284 x 275 x 60.6mm.

Unfortunately, this is still a concept device, so it is unknown whether the company intends to release such a model anytime in the near future. Whether the Lenovo Chronos will fare better than the Microsoft Kinect is therefore yet to be seen.

Kinect is a line of motion sensing input devices that were first released by Microsoft in 2010. The devices typically comprise RGB cameras, infrared projectors and detectors that chart depth either through structured light or time of flight calculations, which can in turn be used to conduct real-time gesture recognition and body skeletal identification, among other functionalities. They also include microphones for speech recognition and voice control.

Microsoft’s Kinect was originally designed as a motion controller peripheral for Xbox video game consoles, differing from competitors (such as Nintendo’s Wii Remote and Sony’s PlayStation Move) in that it did not require physical controllers.

CES 2023: Google Showcases Updated Android Auto App With Material You Redesign

Google is finally rolling out the Android Auto app with the new Material You design in stable form for all. The new update announced at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, brings in a redesigned UI and some exciting features like Coolwalk UI for all, split screen functionality, as well as multitasking features. The app, which allows users to connect their Android phones to their car screen, was first previewed at Google I/O 2022, with the tech giant rolling out a beta version in November.

According to a blog post by Google, the new Android Auto app brings the Material You redesign along with direct access to Google built-in apps from Google Play to the car screen. The app also adds split screen layout and brings in new improvements for a more personalised experience. The tech giant said that the new design focuses on three things — navigation, communication with friends and family, and playing music or podcasts. The app has moved Maps closer to the driver’s seat for easy access.

According to Google, the new media card includes the best of Material You, along with a quick launcher that will let users quickly access recently-used apps. Also, the split screen layout adjusts to different screen sizes as the Android Auto app is compatible with all major carmakers. Additionally, the new Android Auto redesign will also enable Google Assistant to give smart suggestions like missed call reminders, quick arrival time-sharing, and instant access to music or podcasts.

In addition to all these features, users will also be able to make calls using WhatsApp with Android Auto on new Google Pixel and Samsung phones soon. Furthermore, users can now share digital car keys across Pixel and iPhones, while Samsung phones, and Xiaomi users will get this ability later this year.

Last year in May at I/O 2022, Google announced a bunch of new features for Android Auto. The company had shared that it will bring features like a new user interface and support for suggested responses that are based on Google Assistant’s suggestions.

CES 2023: Sony unveils New Project Leonardo Accessibility Controller Kit for PS5

Project Leonardo, PS5’s latest accessibility controller kit, has been announced at Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 presentation. The company shared at the event that it was working on a new controller, designed to help players with disabilities play “easily, more comfortably, and for longer periods.” At the presentation, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan promised an out-of-the-box experience, providing a robust kit of customisable parts and a range of software options on the PS5. It is being developed with contributions from accessibility experts and organisations such as AbleGamers, SpecialEffect and Stack Up. Currently, there is no release window or pricing details for PS5’s codename Project Leonardo.

As per PlayStation’s official blog post, Project Leonardo is built to address common challenges faced by players with “limited motor control,” which includes difficulties in holding a controller for long periods, finger positioning, and being unable to accurately press small-sized buttons. This new kit puts all those buttons onto two circular pads which lie flat — one representing each half of a standard PS5 DualSense controller, with an expanded area of pressure points. Sony describes the controller kit as a “canvas for gamers” since it’s fully customisable to personal preferences, with the package including a variety of analogue stick caps (one with grippy texture as well) and buttons of different shapes and sizes. Furthermore, one could also adjust the distance of the stick from the gamepad.

Similar to the PS5’s upcoming DualSense Edge controllers, Project Leonardo comes with a button mapping feature, including the ability to map multiple buttons to the same function. “Conversely, players can map two functions (like ‘R2′ + ‘L2′) onto the same button,” it adds. Players can store their programmed button settings as profiles — up to three can be saved — for easy selection when switching between game types. For instance, a first-person shooter might require a lower camera sensitivity for accuracy, unlike a third-person action game. So now, you can simply press the profile button and swap on the go instead of heading into settings.

Project Leonardo can be used in pairs (as stated before), standalone, or connected to a PS5 DualSense controller to expand your canvas and fit particular gaming needs. Its four 3.5mm AUX ports help expand the functionality, allowing players to integrate external switches or third-party analogue sticks — all of which can be dynamically connected/ disconnected and button mapped. “Because players can customise Project Leonardo according to their needs, there is no one ‘right’ form factor. We want to empower them to create their own configurations,” So Morimoto, Designer, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in the blog post.

Sony’s first-party games already dominate the video game accessibility space, by offering a robust suite of options to help those suffering from motor and visual challenges. Both The Last of Us Part II and God of War Ragnarök were awarded in the ‘Innovation in Accessibility’ category at The Game Awards 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Project Leonardo is currently in development, with no word on a launch window or pricing.
