Google Play Games for PC to Expand Support for Native PC Games This Year

Google Play Games was released for Windows in 2022, bringing a diverse lineup of select Android games to PC. Google’s gaming service, first announced in 2021, was launched in Beta in India last year, as well, offering optimised Android games for PC. Google recently announced that it will expand support for native PC games on the platform, offering more bespoke PC titles on Google Play Games, in addition to Android games.

At its 2024 Google for Games Developer Summit held last week, the company announced that it will bring more PC games from top developers to Google Play Games app on Windows. “Google Play Games will expand support for native PC games. This means you’ll be able to discover and play a larger selection of games designed specifically for PC directly through Google Play,” the company said.

Expanded support for native PC titles will be coming this year, Google said. Google Play Games on PC features over 3,000 titles in over 140 countries, with the service bringing 35 percent more playtime for developers, according to Google’s internal data.

While it’s unclear if Google intends to bring triple-A PC games from developers to its storefront, the announcement certainly opens doors for new PC titles on the platform. Currently, Steam and Epic Games Store remain the two most popular PC games storefronts. It’s unlikely that Google is looking to disrupt the space and compete with Valve and Epic, two firms involved in the games industry across different aspects of developing, publishing, and selling games.

Google Play Games storefront on PC already offers a few native PC titles like Lineage2M, Odin: Valhalla Rising, Genshin Impact, and Dragonheir: Silent Gods, but it promises to “offer players more ways to experience top games across mobile and PC.”

The Android parent has also asked developers to fill up a Google form to express their interest in making their native PC games available on the service.

Google Play Games for PC beta launched in India last year, offering native PC games support on Windows. Users logging in with their Google account also get seamless syncing between devices. The platform is accessible in both English and Hindi in India.

Apple Changes Decision, to Allow Epic Games Store in iPhones, iPads in EU

Under pressure from European regulators, Apple took a step back in its feud with Epic Games on Friday, clearing the way for Epic to put its own game store on iPhones and iPads in Europe.

Earlier this week, Apple had taken steps to block Epic from starting up a store and bringing back the popular game Fortnite, which Apple removed from its App Store in 2020 after Epic broke the iPhone maker’s in-app payment rules in protest.

Apple’s decision to open its door to Epic follows the European Union’s Thursday deadline for Big Tech companies to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a set of rules that bans Apple and Google from controlling which apps are distributed on devices with the iOS and Android operating systems.

Thierry Breton, the EU’s industry chief, said regulators had warned Apple about the iPhone maker’s move earlier this week to block Epic’s potential return.

“I take note with satisfaction that following our contacts Apple decided to backtrack its decision on Epic exclusion. From Day 2, #DMA is already showing very concrete results!” Breton said on the X social media platform.

Epic and Apple have been in a legal battle since 2020, when the gaming firm alleged that Apple’s practice of charging up to 30 percent commissions on in-app payments on its iOS devices violated US antitrust rules. Epic lost its court battle against Apple, and the game maker’s gambit to intentionally break Apple’s rules as a protest got it banned from Apple’s devices.

Epic’s victory on Friday leaves it well short of everything it wants from Apple.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized Apple’s plans for complying with the DMA, under which Apple says it still has the right to exclude third-party app marketplaces from its devices under some circumstances. And Fortnite remains unavailable in the App Store in the United States.

For its part, Apple is grappling with an erosion of its App Store business model at the same time it has told investors that iPhone sales this quarter will be billions of dollars lower than what Wall Street expected.

The most recent tangle between Apple and Epic involved Apple’s developer accounts, which are normally a minor but necessary administrative step for developers before selling apps on Apple devices.

Apple on Friday reinstated Epic Games’ developer account two days after it had blocked the company from launching its own online marketplace on iPhones and iPads in Europe.

The game developer said it will move on with its plans to bring the Epic Games Store and Fortnite back to iOS in the continent.

“This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable,” Epic Games added.

Apple earlier this week said it had terminated Epic’s account because the company’s actions made it doubt whether it intended to follow the new rules Apple has set out to comply with the DMA.

“Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our DMA policies. As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple Blocks Fortnite Maker Epic Games From Launching Its Own iOS Store in EU

Apple escalated its feud with Epic Games on Wednesday, blocking the Fortnite video-game maker from launching its own online marketplace on iPhones and iPads in Europe.

The two companies have been in a legal battle since 2020, when the gaming firm alleged that Apple’s practice of charging up to 30 percent commissions on in-app payments on its iPhone Operating System (iOS) devices violated US antitrust rules.

The latest challenge from Epic comes as Apple struggles with concerns about tepid demand for its iPhones in China, and its stock has tumbled 12 percent so far this year, underperforming its big tech peers in the US Its shares were largely unchanged on Wednesday.

Attempts by regulators and competitors such as Epic to pave the way for rival marketplaces on Apple’s devices are a major threat to the Silicon Valley heavyweight’s profits and control of its own ecosystem.

European lawmakers are forcing Apple to allow those third-party marketplaces with a law called the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that takes effect this week.

Separately, Brussels antitrust regulators on Monday fined Apple EUR 1.84 billion ($2 billion or roughly Rs. 16,547 crore) for thwarting competition from music streaming rivals via restrictions on its App Store, Apple’s first ever penalty for breaching EU rules.

Epic was working to take advantage of the DMA, but Apple blocked those efforts on Wednesday, citing Epic’s past breaches of contract in the long-running legal dispute.

Apple terminated a new developer account that Epic had created in Sweden. Epic had created the account in an effort to put Fortnite and other games back on iPhones in Europe by running its own game store on Apple’s devices. Apple must allow third-party stores on its devices, under the new European law.

The developer accounts are important because software creators cannot distribute apps to iPhones and iPads without one. Apple had previously terminated some of Epic’s developer accounts in 2020, after Epic purposely broke Apple’s in-app payment rules, using its violation of the rules and subsequent banishment from the App Store as the core of public relations and legal campaign against Apple.

Apple said on Wednesday the court rulings have made clear that it has “sole discretion” to terminate any Epic Games developer account in light of its “egregious” breaches of the company’s developer agreements.

“In light of Epic’s past and ongoing behavior, Apple chose to exercise that right” to terminate Epic Games’ account, Apple said.

Epic alleged that by terminating its account, Apple was removing one of the largest potential competitors to the Apple App Store.

“This is a serious violation of the DMA and shows Apple has no intention of allowing true competition on iOS devices,” Epic Games said.

The European Commission, the executive body of the EU, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple in January proposed certain changes ahead of a March 7 deadline to comply with certain conditions of the DMA, a legislation meant to make it easier for European users to move between competing services.

The company said it would allow alternative app stores on iPhones and an opt-out from using the in-app payments system, but set a “core technology fee” of 50 euro cents per user account per year for developers who sign up for the new regime.

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition PC System Requirements Confirmed Ahead of March 21 Launch

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition is set to arrive on PC on March 21. Ahead of its launch, developer Nixxes Software has released a detailed list of PC system requirements for the game. The studio, tasked with porting the PlayStation exclusive to PC, has also detailed the customisation options that will be available at launch. Horizon Forbidden West is one of the best-looking games on PS5, but Nixxes has opted for an approach that would allow the visually demanding game to run “on a wide variety of PC hardware.”

In a post on the PlayStation Blog Tuesday, Nixxes Software confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West on PC would include graphics presets ranging from very low to very high. “This allows gamers with the latest hardware to push their systems, while also providing a great experience on less powerful PCs,” the developer said.

Nixxes also said that the wide-ranging graphical customisation options would allow the game to run on portable gaming devices. This means that Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go owners should not face problems while playing the game on their handheld device.

It’s worth noting that the Horizon Forbidden West PC port would require at least 16GB of RAM to play across all graphical presents. The game will also require SSD storage of 150GB and Windows 10 64-bit (version 1909 or higher) operating system. For the higher end of the performance spectrum at 4K resolution, Nvidia’s RTX 40 series or AMD 7000 series cards would be needed.

Nixxes has also promised a wealth of graphical customisation settings to tweak the visuals of the game. Horizon Forbidden West on PC will include individual quality settings for textures, level of detail, shadows, water, terrain and more. The game will also feature a field-of-view (FOV) slider and settings for effects like motion blur, film grain, radial blur, lens flares, bloom and vignette.

Horizon Forbidden West was announced for PC last month, setting a March 21 release date. Nixxes Software, the Sony-owned studio that has previously worked on PC ports for first-party PlayStation titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, had also confirmed some of the PC features of the port like support for Nvidia DLSS 3, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS upscaling techniques and ultra-wide resolutions. The Complete Edition of the sci-fi open-world epic will include the Burning Shores expansion from 2023. The game is currently available to pre-order on Steam and Epic Games Store, with the price set at Rs. 3,999.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage PC System Requirements Announced Ahead of Launch

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is prepping for its October 5 launch and ahead of that, Ubisoft has dropped system requirements for the same. Unlike the norm with AAA PC games these days, this ninth-century Baghdad-set title appears to be rather forgiving on hardware, essentially going back an entire graphics generation. Running the game on Ultra settings does not require AMD’s latest 7000 or Nvidia’s 40 series cards. That said, the accompanying ‘PC Features’ trailer shows Intel as its official partner, assuring that it’s been optimised for the Arc GPUs and the respective 13th-Gen processors. This feels like a weird choice since it’s not a really popular graphics card in the PC gaming community.

Naturally, the collaboration brings support for Intel’s AI-powered XeSS upscaling method, which grants higher framerates without sacrificing too much on the visual fidelity department. No other upscaling techs were mentioned in the trailer, but the official blog post details that players will be able to leverage Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR to maximise their experience. Assassin’s Creed Mirage also boasts uncapped frames at 4K resolution — a bold claim when you consider how poorly optimised recent PC ports have been. Other notable features include support for wide screen and multi-monitor displays, an in-game benchmark for gauging performance, and hybrid input that lets you simultaneously use a keyboard, mouse, controller, ‘or other inputs.’

You assume the role of Basim Ibn Ishaq, a side character from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, who climbs the ranks of the Hidden Ones’ order, growing from a mere pickpocket to a feared assassin. Accordingly, the game is cheaper, costing $49.99/ Rs. 2,499 on PC and Rs. 3,499 on console. Pre-orders grant access to a bonus quest called ‘The Forty Thieves,’ which I’m guessing is a reference to the classic Arabian folktale ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.’ One could also play it on Ubisoft’s gaming subscription service Ubisoft+ on day one.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is out October 5 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. An Apple iOS release is also planned for early 2024.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Arrives This October, Gets New Gameplay Trailer

Assassin’s Creed Mirage finally has a release date. During the PlayStation Showcase event, held early Thursday, Ubisoft confirmed that the Baghdad-set chapter will arrive October 12 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The date was actually leaked ahead of time by a few Japanese retail listings, which usually do not list placeholder dates. The title, codenamed ‘Rift,’ was originally planned as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but got expanded into a standalone release to fill the gap in Ubisoft’s launch schedule for the fiscal year. Ubisoft Bordeaux leads development on Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which also received a gameplay trailer at the showcase.

As previously reported, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is going back to its franchise roots, presenting a tighter scope focused on crafty assassinations, unlike the open-world RPG-esque elements they adopted in the recent entries. In it, you play as Basim Ibn Ishaq, a side character from AC: Valhalla, who is seen leveraging his skills to track down and eliminate targets. In the cinematic trailer from last year, he was indoctrinated into the Hidden Ones clan by his master/ mentor Roshan (Shohreh Aghdashloo) — turning from a petty thief into an assassin. This new footage appears to be set a while after that, featuring all the hallmarks of the original Assassin’s Creed games. You’ve got air assassinations, hidden blades, and the art of blending with crowds as Basim gradually perfects his art.

“You have died and been reborn,” Roshan says in a voiceover, as we’re treated to visuals of the long-missing parkour system, as Basim is seen hopping across metallic bars and swinging around corners. There’s a new addition called Pole Vault as well, where you perch atop a giant pole and use its centre of gravity to slowly tilt and descend to cover larger distances in the air. Smoke bombs and leaps of faith return, alongside natural stealth mechanics such as pickpocketing. An unnamed character in the Assassin’s Creed Mirage gameplay trailer notes that you could bribe guards to stroll into an establishment, or do it the old-fashioned way by sneaking in. There also appears to be a recurring day and night cycle, which probably could be manipulated to Basim’s will by resting in beds — similar to Dying Light.

The gameplay trailer ends with a flurry of action sequences, where Basim is seen dual-wielding a dagger and curved sword combo and laying waste to enemies. It’s unclear how they work in tandem, but I’m assuming the dagger would be used for parrying incoming attacks. Ubisoft also mentioned that Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which is now up for pre-order on all platforms, will be getting an Arabic voiceover and full localisation. Pre-orders will receive an exclusive bonus quest at launch called ‘The Forty Thieves,’ where you’ll uncover Ali Baba’s cave. Keeping with the theme, will the password be ‘open sesame’ as well?

The Last of Us Part I PC Port Delayed by Three Weeks, Will Now Arrive on March 28

The Last of Us Part I’s PC port has been delayed by three weeks. In a tweet, developer Naughty Dog confirmed that the much-awaited emotional, zombie-killing survivor game, which was originally set to drop on March 3, will now release on March 28. The studio claims that the additional time will be used to ensure a polished experience at launch that is devoid of bugs or optimisation issues. The delay was partly prompted by the success surrounding HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, with Naughty Dog not wanting to tarnish its reputation by pushing out a port that’s a little rough around the edges.

“We at the studio have been completely blown away by the outpouring of love and support for The Last of Us these last few weeks. Hearing your love for the HBO adaptation, seeing your beautiful Photo Mode shots, and learning about how the world and characters our studio created nearly a decade ago continue to reach new and old fans alike floors us every day,” the open letter from Naughty Dog reads. “And so we want to make sure that The Last of Us Part 1 PC debut is in the best shape possible. These additional few weeks will allow us to ensure this version of The Last of Us lives up to your, and our, standards.” The developer has yet to reveal the system requirements and new PC-specific features that would normally one-up the PS5 version — launched in September, last year — which improved upon the graphics and loading times.

By grappling with their grief and overcoming eccentric survivors, the pair eventually assume a father-daughter relationship, rekindling a light of hope in Joel’s unhappy mind.

Throughout its marketing drive for the PS5 launch, Sony seemed quite aggressive in making people understand that The Last of Us Part I was a full-blown remake built from the ground up. Even then, the Rs. 4,999/ $70 price tag seemed overpriced to fans — especially those who played the previous versions. There are three variants now — the original 2013 Last of Us, the PS4 remaster, and now a remake. A game so good, Naughty Dog couldn’t resist giving it some touch-ups and releasing it all over again. The Last of Us Part I not only improved upon its visuals but added AI (enemy) upgrades, so they behaved similarly to the ones featured in the critically-acclaimed gory sequel, The Last of Us Part II. A permadeath mode was also included for the gaming masochists out there, alongside over 60 accessibility features, aimed at those suffering from visual, auditory, or motor challenges.

In celebration of the HBO series’ debut last month, The Last of Us Part I was made available as a two-hour free trial to PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium members. Those who are on the fence about getting this game can take it for a test drive and make a well-informed decision if the upgrades are worth the full price. A PS Plus Deluxe subscription costs Rs. 849 per month. Meanwhile, HBO renewed The Last of Us series for a second season, which will chart the events of The Last of Us Part II game.

Returnal PC Release Date Set for February 15, System Requirements Revealed

Returnal is headed to PC next month, and with that, Sony has unveiled new features and system requirements for the upcoming port. Developer Housemarque and porter Climax Studios have partnered to bring the once PS5-exclusive roguelike to PC on February 15. Returnal on PC comes with support for Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR upscaling techniques, in addition to DualSense compatibility, ensuring haptic feedback when ripping through the haunting alien planets in the game. Returnal is now available to pre-order on Steam and the Epic Games Store at Rs. 3,999.

Returnal PC new features

Akin to past PlayStation–PC ports, Returnal boasts a slew of enhancements and customisable settings. To begin, the aforementioned Nvidia and AMD’s upscaling methods should allow players to dial up their framerate without making sacrifices in the resolution and/or visual quality. Being a third-person, bullet hell roguelike, Returnal is littered with tonnes of moving objects that could heavily stress your GPU — making this feature quite significant. Additionally, support for NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling) has also been added for players who desire better performance, but don’t have the hardware to support DLSS or FSR.

Returnal also derives ray-traced shadows from its original PS5 kin. However, in the PC version, co-developer Climax Studios has added support for ray-traced reflections as well. “This will make the contrast of a dark setting and neon bullets pop out even more than before,” the PlayStation blog notes. Returnal on PC will also enable unlocked framerates, support for ultra-wide monitors ranging between 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios, and performance metrics — FPS counter, a gauge for measuring GPU and CPU usage, and a latency tracker.

All of this comes packaged with Dolby Atmos Audio, which extends its auditory flair to plugged-in DualSense controllers. As expected, support for keyboard and mouse controls is included as well, with a wide range of customisation options to tailor your needs. Returnal PC will also feature an FOV (field-of-view) slider, which helps adjust how much of your surroundings can be seen on screen.

As for co-op mode, Housemarque has stressed that cross-play with players on the PS5 console is not supported.

Returnal PC pre-order price and bonuses

Pre-orders for the PC version of Returnal are now live, offering early access to some in-game items. The tools are otherwise obtainable through story progression, with the pre-order bonus simply giving players a headstart — akin to what you would expect from a New Game+ mode. The included items are an Electropylon Driver weapon, a Hollowseeker weapon, one Reflex Stimulant, one Pulsating Mass artefact, and one Adrenaline Booster. Additionally, linking your Steam account to PSN (PlayStation Network) unlocks two in-game outfits — a Prototype and a Tactical suit.

As stated above, Returnal costs Rs. 3,999 across Steam and Epic Games Store. There’s only one edition for this game, and it launches February 15 on PC.

Blankos Block Party Becomes First Web3 Title to Be Listed on Epic Games Store

Video game development giant Epic Games, famous for the popular title ‘Fortnite’, has unveiled its first NFT game on the platform titled ‘Blankos Block Party’ powered by Mythical Games. Mythical Games first unleashed Blankos Block Party roughly two years ago with an open beta, and it has since claimed that over one million players have engaged with the title. The title features a set of collectible digital vinyl toys called ‘Blankos’. These Blankos are non-fungible tokens that can be purchased, upgraded, appraised, and sold in the game ecosystem.

While Blankos Block Party is a blockchain game with NFTs that represent avatar designs and accessories that can be bought and sold on the game’s marketplace, Mythical Games isn’t putting the focus on blockchain aspect of the game but rather on its fun factor and ownership economy.

“We’re not beating our chests and saying this is a Web3 game and this is on the blockchain. We’re unique that way. You don’t need to know what a wallet is. You don’t need to know what cryptocurrency is, you can literally just play it,” Mythical Games CEO John Linden told VentureBeat.

The development arrives just days after Gala Games previously announced that its Western-themed shooter Grit would be the first Web3 game on the platform, however, at the time of writing, that title is yet to be available on the Epic Games store.

According to a DappRadar report in April, blockchain gaming activity grew 2,000 percent in Q1 over the previous year. But it still faces challenges when it comes to mass adoption.

Part of that comes from the reluctance of storefronts to host Web3 games. While Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney has said he is open to Web3 gaming, competitor Valve banned games last year that use blockchain technology on its distribution platform Steam.

BioShock: The Collection Goes Free Till June 2 During Epic Games Store Mega Sale 2022

BioShock: The Collection — which includes remastered versions of BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite — is now available for free on the Epic Games Store. The collection of games was originally released in 2016, and is the second entry in Epic’s “mystery games” giveaway that commenced with the four-week Epic Mega Sale 2022 that began on May 19. As part of the ongoing sale, the company is offering discounts of up to 75 percent, as well as a free popular game every week.

Epic announced on Thursday that that BioShock: The Collection, part of the award-winning BioShock franchise, is now available for free on the Epic Games Store as this week’s free mystery game. Gamers will have until June 2 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 8:30pm IST. Epic usually gives out a free game every week , while revealing the next game that will go free a week later. However, during the Epic Mega Sale promotion, gamers are only shown a countdown to the free title for next week.

All three titles that make up BioShock: The Collection are highly rated — BioShock, Bioshock 2, and BioShock Infinite have a Metascore of 96, 88, and 94 respectively. The BioShock franchise is also one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. BioShock and BioShock are set in a fictional underwater city called Rapture, during the 1960s. Meanwhile, BioShock Infinite takes place in 1912, and is set in the floating city of Columbia. The remastered versions of all three titles were released in 2016 as part of BioShock: The Collection, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Last week, Epic announced that it was giving away Borderlands 3, which could be claimed by gamers for a week. It is no longer available for free — though it is discounted 75 percent at Rs. 747 until June 16, for what it’s worth — with BioShock: The Collection taking its place.

While gamers cannot see next week’s free game, they have a week to gain access to BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite — by adding BioShock: The Collection to their library. As is the case with all Epic Games free promotions, once the game is added to your library, you can always install it at a later date.
