Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Unveils New Warzone Map, Zombies Mode, More

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is dropping in November and before that, Activision has unveiled a brand-new map coming to its battle-royale counterpart. Dubbed ‘Urzikstan,’ the large-scale metropolis will be available in Warzone 2.0, sometime in December, as part of season 1 content. The region was first featured in the reimagined 2019 MW game and is playable on the endless respawn-enabled Plunder mode, as well. Set on the eastern border of the Black Sea, this map comes with 11 unique points of interest, peppered with horizontal ziplines and drivable trains for better traversal.

Activision describes Urzikstan as the point where the Middle East meets Europe, with locations namely the Levin Resort, Popov Power, Orlov Military Base, Seaport District, Urzikstan Cargo, Olf Town, Low Town, Hadiqa Farms, Zaravan City, Zaravan Suburbs, and the Shahin Manor. The last of them is located away far from the vacant cities, with marble-tiled floors and a double staircase in the lobby, making for an impressive close-quarters combat zone. The outside, however, is dense with high-rise buildings and industrial areas, with tiny windows, through which enemies might try to peek and catch you by surprise. Players have a better chance of avoiding that by looking for horizontal ziplines, which as the name suggests, slide you across the map at high speeds. Some of these are connected to floating drones, essentially leading nowhere, but they can be used to dive down once again and scope out areas from above.

Another new addition to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is drivable trains, which operators can land onto and control. The driver’s seat presents levers to control the speed and direction of it, but an enemy team can easily climb onto the rear end and flip the handbrake to stop it in its tracks. Now, the two teams are at odds, as the driver is now forced to rush all the way back to release it, and in the process, probably get annihilated. Then there’s the new Gulag, presenting three lanes for combat, with a very small chance that you’ll be sent into one that’s set in the dark. Of course, you’ll be equipped with a pair of night vision goggles and the firearms themselves will project a laser, which can be seen by others.

Activision also dropped a trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode, which is now set across an open-world map. Given the larger scope, for the first time ever, players will have to team up with other squads online in an all-out PvE battle. It appears as if the traditional round-based affair is gone, albeit there are still story elements and perks to uncover, as you hunt down endless hordes of the undead, some of whom transform into grotesque monsters that shoot laser beams out of their eyes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases November 10 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The Urzikstan map arrives sometime in December as part of season 1 content.

Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Adaptation in the Works, CD Projekt Red Confirmed

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a live-action adaptation, developer CD Projekt Red has announced. The project is being developed in collaboration with Anonymous Content, the independent media company best known for producing Emmy-winning shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot. It’s unclear if this take will be a feature-length film or a TV series, but the hunt for a screenwriter has commenced, with plans to tell a brand-new story set in the futuristic neon-lit world, where sex, body modifications, and political chatter are commonplace. The developer also stressed that the adaptation is at an ‘early developmental stage,’ so it’ll be a while before we receive any further updates.

CD Projekt Red previously dabbled in such passive media by simply using the setting to chart an underdog tale via the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which gained critical acclaim and gave the once-tarnished video game a new lease on life. Cyberpunk 2077 suffered a rocky launch period, plagued with game-breaking bugs and crashes, to the point where Sony delisted it from the PS4 digital storefronts. The title has since seen several improvements, thanks to the countless hotfixes and patches, alongside fresh content. An update 2.0 dropped last month, which overhauled the perk system and limited tech augmentations. That was followed by the Phantom Liberty expansion, that put players on a high-stakes espionage mission with a secret agent played by Idris Elba. Keanu Reeves was another contributor to its Hollywood star-power in the main game.

For the live-action adaptation, CD Projekt Red is working directly with Anonymous Content’s Head of Television Garret Kemble, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, and CCO David Levine. The last of them was involved in producing West World, the aforementioned True Detective, and even a few early Game of Thrones seasons. The studio, as a whole, has some impressive projects under its belt, with two Academy Award-winning films: The Revenant and Spotlight. It’s not like CD Projekt Red is a stranger to live-action adaptations either, since the Henry Cavill-led The Witcher series instantly soared to popularity, and has now been renewed for a fourth season — albeit, with Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games movies) taking over.

CDPR dropped a ton of updates at its Investor Day presentation, held late Thursday, confirming that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, its Phantom Liberty expansion, which has only been out for 10 days, has already sold 3 million copies. Furthermore, the company CEO Adam Kiciński revealed his plans to step down from the position, as part of a managemental shake-up. He will instead serve in a more supervisory role, starting January 1, 2024, as Chief Strategy Officer, leaving the CEO position vacant for Adam Badowski and Michał Nowakowski to jointly take over.

Diablo IV Is Headed to Steam This Month, Just in Time for the Vampire-Themed Season 2

Diablo IV is coming to Steam, merely four months after its multi-platform launch. The devilish loot RPG is headed to Valve’s game storefront on October 17, keeping with creator Blizzard’s promise to bring more of its PC catalogue to the commonly preferred choice of platform. You see, all PC games from Blizzard are restricted to its proprietary Battle.net launcher, making it a nuisance for players to jump between and log into different accounts. It’s a hot topic among the community, who’d much rather have their entire library on Steam, for easy access. The free-to-play shooter Overwatch 2 was the first to break this tradition in August, albeit that ended poorly.

The Steam version is now available for wishlisting, and owners will be required to link/ connect Diablo 4 to a Battle.net account, enabling cross-platform play and cross-progression. That said, the game can be launched natively and there’s no need for you to keep Blizzard’s app installed on your PC. The arrival also brings the niceties of unlockable achievements, alongside smooth access to the Steam friend list, so you can invite others for co-op demon-killing sessions. For now, there is no word on whether existing owners of the game will be getting a discount on their Steam purchase, but the store page listing does feature three editions — Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate — same as the initial launch. During the developer update live stream, held late Wednesday, the team noted that the dungeon-crawler is playable on the Steam Deck, though they never went into the specifics of graphical settings.

Diablo 4’s arrival on Steam coincides with the upcoming season 2 content, titled ‘Season of Blood,’ granting you vampiric powers to storm through the lands of Sanctuary. The update will introduce a new questline, pairing you with the crossbow-wielding vampire hunter Erys, voiced by Gemma Chan (The Eternals), as you investigate a string of bloodied murders and the Dark Master responsible for it. More importantly, players can access the season 2 content right after completing the Missing Pieces prologue quest, essentially skipping the campaign to fulfil their blood-sucking desires. The update also vastly improves the endgame progression by increasing XP gains after level 50, faster by up to 40 percent. Expect five new endgame bosses, a general balance of skills, and faster mounts for traversal.

As mentioned before, Overwatch 2 was the first Blizzard PC game to make a jump to Steam, with the publisher promising that it plans on bringing over more titles. The shooter’s arrival was instantly blasted with negative reviews, making it the worst-reviewed game on the platform. At the time of writing, it’s got an ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ review score, due to players’ dissatisfaction with the battle pass system and the cancellation of its long-promised PvE mode. Diablo IV, on the other hand, was received well at launch but slowly fell off with season 1’s release that made the game incredibly unfun to grind. Hopefully, fate doesn’t repeat itself this time.

Diablo IV is headed to Steam on October 17. It is already available to play on PC via Battle.net, in addition to console through PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.

Cricket 24 Launches Globally; New India Edition PS5 Bundle Announced

Cricket 24, dubbed ‘the most licensed cricket game ever,’ is out now on PlayStation and Xbox consoles — both current and old-gen — alongside PC via Steam. Developer Big Ant Studios had also promised a Nintendo Switch port, though it won’t be available until late November. It’s not far-fetched to assume that developer Big Ant Studios rushed to put the game out right in time for the real-life ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which also kicks off today. As a result, we have an uneven launch, with Sony PlayStation trying to capitalise on India’s love for the sport by unveiling a Cricket 24-themed PS5 bundle.

“We’ve spent years going around the world signing up nations from the majors to the minnows,” Rory Simmons, CEO, Big Ant Studios said in a developer diary. “It has a full calendar, so one minute you’re playing in the Caribbean, then you’re playing the T20 in India, and then you’re down for the big bash — up for the hundred, maybe in Ashes.” His choice of words to describe the Indian tournament is worth noting here, as it seems the team never received licensing from the annual Indian Premier League (IPL), albeit player and jersey likenesses of teams like Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians are present throughout. The Ashes, the longstanding test series rivalry between England and Australia, is another major draw in Cricket 24, promising detailed cutscenes, press conferences, and training sessions — all of which immerse you in the tour.

In addition to big tournaments like the KFC BBL and Weber WBBL, the licensing also carries over to 50 official stadiums and sporting equipment that features familiar branding. Then, of course, there’s the Career mode, which lets you chart a fledgling club cricketer’s journey, as they hone their skills to become the next big sensation on the international stage. It’s unclear how in-depth this mode is, but Big Ant Studios claims that players will have to grow their fan base, and will be given more agency in how they want to balance Test matches and the big leagues.

As part of the launch, PlayStation also revealed a Cricket 24 PS5 bundle, costing Rs. 47,990 — Rs. 7,000 cheaper than the console’s retail price in the country. This introductory offer goes live from October 8 onwards and will be available to purchase from leading online retailers like Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, GamesTheShop, Reliance Digital, ShopatSC, and Vijay Sales. For now, though, the price is set at Rs. 57,990, so it’s recommended that you wait for the discounted price. The package itself comes with the 4K Bluray-equipped PS5 console, alongside a digital voucher code to download Cricket 24 (Indian Edition) and a DualSense controller. If you already own a PS5 or a PS4 console, the game is available to purchase digitally at Rs. 4,399 from the PlayStation store.

Cricket 24 is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. A Nintendo Switch version is planned for late November.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Global Launch Timings Revealed: Details

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is prepping to release this week, and before that, we’ve received global launch timings for the same. Ubisoft tweeted an infographic listing different timezones that point toward a staggered release — meaning the game unlocks at different times across the world. On console, the ninth-century Baghdad-set title goes live at midnight local time on October 5, which means the more impatient players can try changing their system’s location to New Zealand to try and get in early. So far, the release schedule is straightforward, with preloading already live across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. However, the PC unlock is a tad confusing, with some regions getting a headstart by as much as a day.

India isn’t mentioned in the infographic, but we can assume the PC version will launch sometime after October 5 at midnight. We’ve got Abu Dhabi’s unlock time for reference, which stands at 3 am GST, aligning with 4:30 am IST in India. Bear in mind that the PC port is only accessible via the Ubisoft Connect app and Epic Games Store, with Assassin’s Creed Mirage launching on the latter platform at 4 pm UTC on October 5, which translates to 9:30 pm in India.

PC players in Los Angeles, US, can start playing on October 4 at 10 pm PDT, while those on the East Coast of New York City begin their journey on October 5 at 1 am EDT. Montreal, Canada, follows the same timezone as the latter, whereas players in London can access it on October 5 at 12 am BST — in tandem with their console release. Meanwhile, Tokyo, Japan’s PC launch is set for October 4 at 10 pm JST and Sydney, Australia, is among the first regions to jump in on October 5 at 12 am AEDT. Naughty Dog Has Reportedly Laid Off 25 Employees, The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Is ‘On Ice’

The Last of Us maker Naughty Dog is reportedly among the latest game studios to be hit with layoffs. As per Kotaku, the first-party PlayStation studio is cutting off at least 25 developers, with the most affected members being quality assurance (QA) testers, whose contracts have been shortened. Affected workers are expected to continue working until the end of October, and they allegedly won’t be receiving any severance payments. Turns out, the full-time staff — last recorded headcount being 400+ in July — are not being laid off, with employees in general being ‘pressured’ to keep the news internal.

While 2023 has been an incredible year for games, the people making them have been suffering for some time now. Massive layoffs, high-ranking executives leaving, and studio shutdowns like we saw with Volition, thanks to the poorly received Saints Row reboot It seems like all it takes for investors to pull the plug now is one bad-selling game, though it’s bizarre to see uber-successful studios like Naughty Dog suffering the same fate. The team kicked off the year on a great note with HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, which has now earned 24 nominations at the upcomingEmmy Awards. It’s also weird when you think about Naughty Dog’s prestigious position in Sony’s eyes, with co-President Neil Druckmann claiming that the team has the luxury of creating what it’s passionate about, rather than chasing trends.

Kotaku also touched upon the long-gestating The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off title, noting that the game is ‘ basically on ice’ at the moment. A report from May revealed that development on the game had been scaled back and required more time to cook, as a means to ‘reassess its quality and long-term viability.’ As part of the process, several developers were reallocated to other projects and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) invited Halo and Destiny creator Bungie to evaluate the zombie-killing multiplayer experience. At the end of the testing, Bungie was unimpressed, raising concerns about the project’s ability to maintain an online player base for long periods, thereby leading to the internal shake-up. For now, though, the San Francisco-set spin-off isn’t cancelled.

It is worth mentioning that the TLOU multiplayer experience would also be the first to not include Druckmann as a lead writer or director. By the end of 2023, he might also be the only one left to lead Naughty Dog, given co-President Evan Wells has chosen to retire after a 25-year stint at the company. Its latest release was in March — the PC port of The Last of Us Part I, which was received poorly due to performance issues. Then there’s also an untitled ‘brand-new single-player’ game that the studio has got cooking, which many are hoping is The Last of Us Part III. An Uncharted sequel is unlikely since Druckmann already confirmed that the team is moving on from that franchise.

PlayStation Plus October 2023 Free Games: The Callisto Protocol, Farming Simulator 22, and Weird West

PlayStation Plus’ monthly free games for October 2023 have been announced. The three titles will be available to members of PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe/ Premium plans, starting October 3. Sony confirmed the additions on the PlayStation Blog late Wednesday, reminding that PS Plus members have until October 2 to add September’s free games to their library, which include the poorly-received Saints Row reboot, the sandbox MMO Black Desert, and the machine-battler Generation Zero.

PS Plus October 2023: The Callisto Protocol

Serving as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, The Callisto Protocol pits you in the futuristic maximum security Black Iron Prison, which has been overtaken by bloodthirsty parasitic aliens. Assuming the role of an inmate Jacob Lee, players must fight their way through endless hordes by navigating through blood-soaked claustrophobic passageways, and in the process, uncover a larger conspiracy. Hack off limbs, blast them into fleshy bits, or use your telekinetic powers to grab foes from a distance and chuck them into razors. The game launched to mixed reception for not being inventive and sticking way too close to Dead Space’s roots.

Game director Glen Schofield recently left Striking Distance Studios to ‘pursue new opportunities,’ which could partly be attributed to The Callisto Protocol’s poor sales. It will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5.

PS Plus October 2023: Farming Simulator 22

Push through the challenging conditions of the four seasons to grow a prosperous farm and in time, an agricultural empire in Farming Simulator 22. You can choose to create a lush vineyard, breed cattle on hillside landscapes, or cultivate produce ranging from wheat, potatoes, and more. In a dark fantastical reimagining of the Wild West, this isometric RPG has you switch between the roles of five unique characters, ranging from a bounty hunter, a pigman, a shapeshifting entity, and more to uncover the supernatural secrets that reside in its sandbox universe. Locations and the acts you perform for a faction are totally reactive to player choices, with permadeath being one of them. While it largely follows an explore-loot-kill gameplay loop, there are some crafty stealth options mixed in there for good measure, which is to be expected with the involvement of Raphaël Colantonio, who previously helmed Dishonored.

Weird West will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5.

Earlier this month, PlayStation also announced the set of games coming to its September Game Catalog, available to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium tier subscribers. Standouts are NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, Civilization VI, Unpacking, and a lot more.

Meanwhile, Call of the Sea throws you into the farthest reaches of the South Pacific, in search of your husband who went missing on an expedition. Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a stunning, nameless tropical island with clues of a lost civilisation and occult influences, all waiting to be unravelled.

Other notable additions include Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, which has you build full-blown empires through extensive research and go head-to-head with history’s most notorious leaders to emerge as the greatest known civilisation. Then there’s Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, where you head into the Middle East and eliminate a series of targets through extreme-range tactical sniping missions.

All these and more were unveiled on the PlayStation Blog and will be available exclusively to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe members in September (PS Plus Deluxe is called PS Plus Premium in select markets). Last month’s catalogue included Destiny 2: The Witch Queen DLC, Sea of Stars, and Lost Judgement to name just a few.

The new bit of information, however, is that the port from Double Eleven Studios runs at 1080p resolution on the Nintendo Switch and PS4, going up to 4K resolution on the PS4 Pro and PS5 (playable via backward compatibility).

Bear in mind, this is a port of a 13-year-old game, so it’s not surprising for the Switch to run it on a full-HD resolution. The handheld console has proven itself worthy to run newer open-world titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at 720p when the console is docked. Meanwhile, Digital Foundry claims that while Red Dead Redemption’s PS5 port doesn’t come with any worthwhile enhancements, the image and shadow quality is better than the Xbox Series S/X version, albeit the latter is running the original Xbox 360 version via backwards compatibility with no extra work done on it. The lack of 60fps seems to be a major compromise for players, considering it is the gold standard for modern console gaming, which is not helped by the expensive $49.99/ Rs. 3,639 price tag.

The version comes with all the bonus features from the Game of the Year Edition, including the Tomahawk, Explosive Rifle, and Golden Guns, alongside unlockable trophies. There’s also some new localisation support and the package comes included with the Undead Nightmare zombie add-on. The port reeks of a cash grab attempt (much like the remastered GTA trilogy), despite parent company Take-Two CEO’s comments about how $49.99 is the ‘commercially accurate‘ price for a standard port. The pricing doesn’t make much sense either, considering Take-Two previously remade Mafia from the ground up with an expanded story and gameplay, which is only priced at $40/ Rs. 2.199, whereas this simple port with nary an upgrade goes for $50.

A PC version is nowhere in sight either and it’s ironic, considering you can run Red Dead Redemption at 60fps via the Xenia emulator. Others are miffed by the events leading up to the reveal, where the port received a new title: ‘Rockstar Games Presents: Red Dead Redemption,’ causing them to believe that a remaster was imminent. The game follows former outlaw John Marston as he journeys across the sprawling American West to locate the last remaining members of the notorious Van der Linde gang. The game also introduced the Honor system, wherein NPCs would react kindly if John had performed positive acts, and harshly if his morality was flawed. This version also doesn’t include multiplayer.

Red Dead Redemption is now available on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Gameplay Reveal Trailer Showcases Sandbox-Like Campaign, ‘No Russian’ Mission

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III just got a gameplay reveal trailer — a slightly misleading title, given most of the footage is loaded with cinematics. Indeed, it is focused on the campaign, which sees Captain Price and his Task Force 141 take on the Russian ultranationalist war criminal Vladimir Makarov, as he extends his grasp across the world. Publisher Activision has introduced a new non-linear campaign structure called ‘Open Combat Missions,’ memorable multiplayer maps, and a Zombies mode set in an open world. Pre-orders for the game are now live across all major platforms.

In what began as a trilogy of soft reboots, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer evokes memories of the Hunter Killer mission from the original 2011 title, where our team is submerged underwater, prepared to sneak their way into the enemy territory. While much of the action is presented stealthily, Activision stresses that there will be a level of freedom in how you decide to tackle a mission. The game even carries over some choice-based dialogue options from previous entries, but branches it out even further, so it reacts to player decisions. While revisiting a mission, if you happen to stumble upon a new sub-location, it might trigger new speech as well. The new feature is complemented by the multiplayer segment, which brings back 16 modernised maps from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, alongside more large-scale areas such as a ‘colossal War map.’

The beloved Zombies mode also returns with an extended scope that throws you into an open world environment teeming with the undead of escalating difficulty. Taking the massive map into consideration, Modern Warfare 3 will — for the first time ever — let you team up with other squads in an all-out PvE battle. That means multiple online squads will unite in their mission to thwart the zombie invasion. Other new features include the ability to cancel sliding so you can erratically avoid enemy fire while still maintaining momentum, and content carry-over that makes it so weapons and cosmetics unlocked in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will be available in MW3, as well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases November 10 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Pre-orders grant early access to the open beta and the ability to play the campaign up to a week early.
