Steam’s Best of 2023 Reveals Its Highest-Selling and Most-Played Games of the Past Year

Valve has unveiled its annual ‘Best of 2023′ list on Steam, revealing which titles dominated sales on PC. The titles haven’t been numerically ranked, but have been grouped into tiers — Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze — based on data collected from January 1 through December 15, 2023. The Top 12 category is populated by both free-to-play multiplayer games and the biggest launches, with the award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts Legacy emerging as the best-selling titles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was disliked by both fans and critics alike, also made it to higher echelons, thanks to a dedicated fanbase wanting to experience its multiplayer segment.

The usual suspects like Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Apex Legends, Dota 2, and Destiny 2 also made it to the Platinum rank — the last of them is getting a new expansion, ‘The Final Shape,’ in June, this year. Meanwhile, the Gold tier contains some absolute bangers like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Elden Ring, for which the last-reported sales number was 20 million copies across all platforms. Its popularity was highly instrumental in plunking Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, a lesser-known FromSoftware franchise, among the top 24 best-selling games on the platform. Even FIFA 23 from last year made the cut, which shouldn’t be surprising considering its follow-up EA Sports FC 24 launched mid-year.

In addition to an overall Top-Sellers field, Steam has additional sections for New Releases by gross revenue, Most Played, Early Access purchases, and more. Multiplatform games that were received poorly seem to be the centre of attention among the latest releases, with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Payday 3 emerging on top, with the latter being criticised for lack of content. As you’d expect, multiplayer games held the highest player count (above 300,000 minimum), though some single-player affairs like Goose Goose Duck and Hogwarts Legacy charted alongside Baldur’s Gate 3, which at one point, peaked at over 800,000 concurrent players on Steam. Developer Larian Studios only anticipated 100,000, given the game had been out for nearly three years in early access. At the time of writing, over 176,000 concurrent players are logged into the expansive RPG, which is placed fourth among the most-played games on the platform.

2023 was also a great year for studios to test out their games in early access and gain feedback on them. The ocean exploration and fishing game from Mintrocket, Dave the Diver, was among the favourites, even turning out to be one of the most played games on the Steam Deck. While it’s only natural to expect less graphically intensive games like Vampire Survivor and Half-Life on there, somehow Starfield made it to the top despite its lack of optimisation causing heavy stutters in crowded areas like New Atlantis and the Wild West-themed Akila. Beat Saber and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR emerged among the favourites in virtual reality gaming, along with Half-Life: Alyx, pitting you in a vicious fight against the alien Combines.

Currently, Steam also has its annual Winter Sale going on, bringing steep discounts on new and returning games. It runs until January 5 at 10:30pm IST.

Call of Duty: MW 3, Warzone Season 1 Is Out Now: New Maps, Drivable Trains, Zombies Story Mission, More

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and its Warzone component kicked off its Season 1 multiplayer today, marking its first major update since launch. The former gets three new maps as part of its 24/7 playlist, in addition to a 6v6 arena set in Rio, which will be available later in the season. As usual, there are some rewards for racking up kills without dying, granting players an EMP upon getting a 13 killstreak and the ability to summon mosquito swarms as cover on a 15 killstreak. There’s also a new perk called the Assassin Vest, which makes players immune to UAV scans and doesn’t pop skulls on the minimap upon performing an execution.

The three new maps take you to a coastal town in ‘Greece’, a blood-drenched close-quarters slaughterhouse called ‘Meat’, and a ‘Training Facility’ set in a warehouse that enables 2v2 gunfights. Building on that, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III brings back two fan-favourite modes — the All or Nothing equips players with throwing knives and an empty pistol, taking them with slowly upgrading armaments via killstreaks and perk activations. Then there’s the standard round-based Gunfight with small teams. Ranked Play is expected to drop later in Season 1, alongside promotional skins for the upcoming Denis Villeneuve movie Dune: Part 2 — Paul Atredis and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen — and an in-game event titled ‘Trial of Power.’ There are no specifics of the event yet, but we can assume that the timing of the collaboration had to do with the film’s delay from November to March 2024 due to the Hollywood labour strikes. Still, a weird game to pick for promoting Dune 2.

Over on Warzone, Call of Duty’s long-running battle-royale mode, the brand-new Urzikstan map is now live, throwing you onto a greyish metropolis punctuated by lavish resorts, power mills, a military base, a luxurious mansion and more. Activision describes it as a point where the Middle East meets Europe — or to put it more bluntly in the game’s universe, it’s located on the ‘easter border of the Black Sea and bordering Al Mazrah.’ As previously reported, the map adds a few unique mechanics for traversal such as horizontal ziplines and a drivable train, whose speed can be controlled by players using dedicated levers. Of course, one could also flip the brakes by heading to the backside. With such major changes comes a new 1v1 Gulag called ‘Silo,’ which is entirely symmetrical but will be varied based on luck.

Season 1 also brings a new story mission to the Zombies mode, plopping a ‘massive gateway’ in the Exclusion Zone for players to investigate. Additionally, there’s a new battle pass, promising new weapon unlocks such as the XRX Stalker, RAM-7, and Stormender, which can be added to your loadout. Call of Duty 2024 Is Reportedly a Black Ops Entry, Set During the Gulf War

Call of Duty release in 2024 is reportedly a new entry in the Black Ops series, set around the 1990s Gulf War. As per Windows Central, the title will feature a ‘nuanced’ narrative that jumps between different factions within the conflict, connecting to the Cold War. Keeping with the time period, weaponry and gadgets will bear a traditional look and feel, unlike the futuristic holographic-sited guns we’ve seen in recent Call of Duty games. Hopefully, Activision takes some lessons from the poorly-received Modern Warfare 3 and doubles down on the campaign aspects — otherwise, building the overarching lore seems futile, as players would simply begin skipping it for multiplayer.

As previously reported, Treyarch is leading development on Call of Duty 2024, having shifted its launch cycle by a year. For the uninitiated, Activision rotates between its three main developers for its annual Call of Duty games — Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games — but broke the pattern last year by moving Treyarch’s Call of Duty from 2023 to 2024, leading to the short Modern Warfare 3 getting released early. The untitled Black Ops game is said to feature a two-year life cycle, with the promise of a lengthier early access period as a pre-order bonus. As per Windows Central, keen players will be able to experience the base game ‘several days’ before release, and weeks for multiplayer and Zombies modes. PS5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Bundle Launches in India Tomorrow, Priced at Rs. 49,390

Sony is gearing up to launch the PS5’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III bundle in India. The cross-gen package will be available from November 10 onwards, but unlike in the US, the publisher isn’t selling the new slim version of the console here yet. Players will receive the standard 4K Blu-ray drive-equipped PS5, alongside a voucher code for Activision’s upcoming marquee shooter, at Rs. 49,390. This is part of an ‘introductory offer’ running until November 23, during which the bundle’s price has been slashed by Rs. 10,000 — after which, it will cost Rs. 59,390, which is the base price for any PS5 game bundle.

PlayStation has been ramping up marketing in India recently by offering numerous discounts on the PS5 and bundling it up with on-demand games like God of War Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, EA Sports FC 24, and even Cricket 24 (to coincide with the ICC World Cup). It’s interesting to note, however, that the Modern Warfare 3 bundle available in the US is reportedly including the game worth $70 (about Rs. 5,830) for free with the PS5 Slim variant at a gross total of $499.99 (about Rs. 41,640). Meanwhile, players in India get treated to the same old version of PS5, where technically speaking, the game isn’t included for free in the bundle.

You see, a PS5 disc variant costs Rs. 54,990 in India, while the upcoming Call of Duty game is priced at Rs. 5,599 on the PlayStation store — totalling Rs. 60,589. Sure, the limited-time sale makes it way cheaper — at Rs. 49,390 — but once it’s over, you’re paying the full price. As usual, it will be available to buy from the usual Indian retailers like Amazon, Chroma, Flipkart, GamestheShop, Reliance Digital, ShopatSC, and Vijay Sales.

For now, it’s unclear when the slimmer version of the PS5 will arrive in India and if so, whether it will be priced similar to the current version. Sony previously suggested that once it manages to sell off the older models, only the new slim ones will be made available to purchase. It’s simply 30 percent smaller than the original version and comes with a detachable disc drive, which requires an internet connection to register/ bind it to the console. Hardware is all around the same, but the internal storage has been upgraded from an 825GB to a 1TB SSD. A digital PS5 slim variant is also available at $449.99 (about Rs. 37,400), albeit it’s more of a marketing gimmick since one can buy the Blu-ray drive separately and install it themselves.

Elsewhere, Sony has delayed half the total live service games it had planned to launch by March 2026 — down from 12 to six titles. During an earnings call, Sony PlayStation COO Hiroki Totoki said (via VGC), “We are reviewing this… we are trying as much as possible to ensure [that these games] are enjoyed and liked by gamers for a long time. [Out of] the 12 titles, six titles will be released by FY25 — that’s our current plan.” He further added that the remaining six will be evaluated further to see their potential — possibly another meeting with Destiny 2 maker Bungie to review the live service portfolio. It’s also worth mentioning that The Last of Us multiplayer game, which was allegedly put ‘on ice,’ is still in active development — as confirmed by its director Vinit Agarwal.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Could Be Bundled for Free With PS5 Slim Disc Edition

Sony announced a slimmer, lighter refresh of the PlayStation 5 last month, bringing new design changes that help the console shed its bulky signature. The PS5 slim, which now comes with redesigned side panels that allow you to add a detachable external Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive to the digital edition of the console, is set to release this month. While Sony has not announced an official release date, both disc and digital editions of the new PS5 slim will reportedly go on sale November 10 in the US and could arrive in a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 bundle. Now, the PS5 slim disc edition is seemingly getting bundled with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, too. According to a Call of Duty news portal, the upcoming shooter from Activision is set to be bundled for free with the console.

The cross-gen bundle for Modern Warfare 3, which comes out November 10, costs $70 (Rs. 5,599 in India) on the PlayStation Store, but fans might be able to pick it up for free as part of a PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III bundle. According to CharlieIntel, a popular Call of Duty news site, the MW3 PS5 slim bundle will be available November 10 for $499. The disc edition of the PS5 slim is priced at $499, thus making the game a free addition to the bundle.

CharlieIntel posted an alleged image of a new Call of Duty ad that shows the game bundled with the PS5 slim disc edition, at $499 (roughly Rs. 41,577). The bundle would presumably be available in the US, but there’s no world on its availability in India. PlayStation and Activision have not yet officially confirmed the bundle, but if the MW3 PS5 slim bundle does arrive, with the game as a free addition, it would be a surprising development. The next Call of Duty title is one of the biggest game releases of the year and it seems unlikely that it would be bundled for free with the PS5. However, it might be likely that Sony is willing to sell its slimmer version of the PS5 at a reduced price, bundled with the next COD title, to boost holiday season sales.

Call of Duty maker Activision was recently acquired by Sony rival Microsoft, after the Xbox parent secured approval from the US FTC and the UK’s CMA for the $69 billion deal. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, however, confirmed last month that Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard games won’t appear on Xbox Game Pass until next year. Activision Blizzard, too, had earlier said on X that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III won’t be coming to Game Pass soon.

The PS5 slim, set to launch around the same time as MW3 in the US, will also reportedly arrive as part of a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 priced at $559.99 (roughly Rs. 46,651). The Spider-Man 2 bundle, which is said to be releasing November 8, will also include the disc version of the PS5 slim.

The PS5 slim has seen a reduction in volume by more than 30 percent, and weight by 18 percent and 24 percent compared to the original PS5s disc and digital editions, respectively. While the PS5 slim’s processing power and graphical capabilities remain the same as the original PS5, the mid-gen refresh of the console does get slightly bigger internal storage, up from an 825GB custom SSD to 1TB. The disc edition of the redesigned PS5 slim maintains its pricing at $499.99 (roughly Rs. 41,615), but the digital edition gets a $50 price bump and will cost $449.99 (roughly Rs. 37,452), up from $399.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, meanwhile, is slated to release across PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, and Xbox One on November 10. Digital edition pre-order customers will also get early access to the game’s campaign mode and will be able to play the main story up to a week before release.

Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard games won’t appear on Xbox Game Pass until next year. On the Official Xbox Podcast, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer claimed that players wouldn’t be seeing a big drop of those titles immediately, due to the lengthy regulatory challenges the company faced in its buyout attempt. Since it was uncertain whether the acquisition would be approved by Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) until recently, Xbox wasn’t able to do the groundwork for adding the catalogue to their gaming subscription service. Ahead of the deal’s closure, Activision Blizzard confirmed on Twitter that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and newly-launched Diablo IV won’t be coming to Game Pass soon, but Spencer’s statement covers older titles as well.

This is in stark contrast from Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media, where just two days after the buyout, 20 Bethesda back catalogue games, including franchises like Fallout, DOOM, Dishonored, and more were flooded onto Game Pass — free to play for members. “So now that the deal is closed, we’re starting that work. But there is work,” Spencer said on the podcast, attesting that Activision Blizzard’s tweet is ‘accurate’ in terms of the 2024 timeline. He further assured that there’s no ‘secret celebration drop’ coming in the next few weeks, while acknowledging that fans have the right to be disappointed about it. The bundle will be available only to those who pre-order Modern Warfare 3 on PS4 and PS5 for a year, until November 9, 2024. That said, Spencer said that there could be some performance and resolution changes depending on the platform. Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox port is an example, where the developers are unable to include split-screen coop on the lower-end Xbox Series S due to technical limitations. However, the in-game content is expected to remain the same (at the time of writing).

“We have no goal of somehow trying to use Call of Duty to get you to buy an Xbox console,” he said, adding that he doesn’t think making platform exclusive beta weekends helps players. The regulatory process for Activision Blizzard acquisition took more than a year, thanks to the US FTC stepping in to express concerns that Microsoft’s $69 billion (about Rs. 5,74,528 crore) deal was anti-competitive and that it had plans to make Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox. During those court proceedings, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan also claimed that a bunch of video game publishers he’d been speaking to unanimously agreed that Xbox Game Pass was ‘value destructive.’

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Unveils New Warzone Map, Zombies Mode, More

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is dropping in November and before that, Activision has unveiled a brand-new map coming to its battle-royale counterpart. Dubbed ‘Urzikstan,’ the large-scale metropolis will be available in Warzone 2.0, sometime in December, as part of season 1 content. The region was first featured in the reimagined 2019 MW game and is playable on the endless respawn-enabled Plunder mode, as well. Set on the eastern border of the Black Sea, this map comes with 11 unique points of interest, peppered with horizontal ziplines and drivable trains for better traversal.

Activision describes Urzikstan as the point where the Middle East meets Europe, with locations namely the Levin Resort, Popov Power, Orlov Military Base, Seaport District, Urzikstan Cargo, Olf Town, Low Town, Hadiqa Farms, Zaravan City, Zaravan Suburbs, and the Shahin Manor. The last of them is located away far from the vacant cities, with marble-tiled floors and a double staircase in the lobby, making for an impressive close-quarters combat zone. The outside, however, is dense with high-rise buildings and industrial areas, with tiny windows, through which enemies might try to peek and catch you by surprise. Players have a better chance of avoiding that by looking for horizontal ziplines, which as the name suggests, slide you across the map at high speeds. Some of these are connected to floating drones, essentially leading nowhere, but they can be used to dive down once again and scope out areas from above.

Another new addition to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is drivable trains, which operators can land onto and control. The driver’s seat presents levers to control the speed and direction of it, but an enemy team can easily climb onto the rear end and flip the handbrake to stop it in its tracks. Now, the two teams are at odds, as the driver is now forced to rush all the way back to release it, and in the process, probably get annihilated. Then there’s the new Gulag, presenting three lanes for combat, with a very small chance that you’ll be sent into one that’s set in the dark. Of course, you’ll be equipped with a pair of night vision goggles and the firearms themselves will project a laser, which can be seen by others.

Activision also dropped a trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode, which is now set across an open-world map. Given the larger scope, for the first time ever, players will have to team up with other squads online in an all-out PvE battle. It appears as if the traditional round-based affair is gone, albeit there are still story elements and perks to uncover, as you hunt down endless hordes of the undead, some of whom transform into grotesque monsters that shoot laser beams out of their eyes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases November 10 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The Urzikstan map arrives sometime in December as part of season 1 content.

While revisiting a mission, if you happen to stumble upon a new sub-location, it might trigger new speech as well. The new feature is complemented by the multiplayer segment, which brings back 16 modernised maps from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, alongside more large-scale areas such as a ‘colossal War map.’

The beloved Zombies mode also returns with an extended scope that throws you into an open world environment teeming with the undead of escalating difficulty. Taking the massive map into consideration, Modern Warfare 3 will — for the first time ever — let you team up with other squads in an all-out PvE battle. That means multiple online squads will unite in their mission to thwart the zombie invasion. Other new features include the ability to cancel sliding so you can erratically avoid enemy fire while still maintaining momentum, and content carry-over that makes it so weapons and cosmetics unlocked in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will be available in MW3, as well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Is Still Coming to PS4 and Xbox One, Will Be a ‘Premium’ Standalone Release

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be out on the previous-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles, despite rumours suggesting otherwise. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Release Date Set for November 10

This year’s Call of Duty has been revealed as Modern Warfare III, and it’s coming November 10.
