New York Giants select CB Joey Porter Jr. in 2023 NFL re-draft

The New York Giants selected Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks with the 24th overall selection in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Banks started 13 games as a rookie for the Giants and put together some decent numbers: 55 tackles (44 solo) with 11 passes defensed and two interceptions.

But some think the Giants could have done better. Joey Porter Jr. was on the board and they chose Banks over him.

Count The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner as one of the many who believe the Giants should have gone with Porter over Banks. Keep in mind the Giants had the 25th pick and traded up with Jacksonville one spot to grab Banks.

That trade cost them an additional two picks (Nos. 160 and 240), so they used three picks to move up to take him. Baumgardner has the Giants staying at 25 and taking Porter in his re-draft of the 2023 NFL draft.

No. 25: New York Giants – CB Joey Porter Jr., Penn State

There are things to work on here — Porter was a handsy and physical player in college, and some of that translated to the league in a negative way (12 penalties last year). However, Porter was still very tough to crack in coverage and should shave off some of those penalties with experience.

Porter was taken with the first pick in the second round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team last year.

Giants’ Jerome Henderson wants players who thrive on an island

The New York Giants defense will take on a new look in 2024 with Shane Bowen taking over as coordinator for Wink Martindale.

Upon his hiring, Bowen and head coach Brian Daboll were quick to retain defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson and gave him the added responsibility of defensive passing game coordinator.

Henderson has been around the block a few times and understands how to deal with change. Bowen will initiate a completely different approach than Martindale and Henderson is waiting to see how things pan out, but is liking what he’s seeing thus far.

“You always wonder,” Henderson said in a recent interview on Giants.com.

“Shane has been awesome. He’s been a great leader so far. He’s done a good job getting our staff together and giving us his vision of our defense. He’s a guy who has listened to our input and asked for input and said, ‘This is going to be our defense and we’re going to build it the right way.’ It’s been a lot of fun so far.”

Henderson is returning but two of his top players — safety Xavier McKinney and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson — are not, although Jackson could still re-sign with the team.

“There are not a lot of new things in football,” Henderson said when asked what the secondary will look like this year. “It’s just we call them different things. It’s similar concepts, different language, little tweaks. It’s a little bit of, from the high-level perspective, just a different philosophy of how we’ll play defense. But at the end of the day, we’ll play similar coverages, we’ll have similar fronts, we’ll just hopefully play them at a higher level obviously this year and make the Giants fans proud.”

The Giants have a group of young cornerbacks led by Deonte Banks, Cor’Dale Flott, Nick McCloud, and Tre Hawkins III and could bring in a few more this spring in the draft.

Henderson, who once had Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis under his charge, explained what a ‘high-caliber’ cornerback looks like in his eyes.

“Obviously the movement skills are key for us, the ability to change directions and be explosive,” he said. “I think one of the things that’s overlooked, though, when you talk about Revis — he had this in spades — it’s that demeanor that ‘I want to dominate and control this guy across from me.’

“When I think about the really good ones, they wanted those big moments, and they wanted to be on that island. They wanted to know that I’m guarding the guy, and they wanted the ball to be thrown at that guy. The good ones did it at a high level and won a lot more of those battles than they lost.”

Banks seems to have that in him but the Giants will need a lot more than that.

New York Giants don’t fare well in 2023 NFL draft re-grade

The jury is still out on the 2023 NFL draft class but Diante Lee of The Athletic recently decided to grade the class after just one season.

The New York Giants had seven picks in the draft leading off with Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks at No. 24 overall. He started 15 games and was solid most of the season. He is now considered a No. 1 outside corner, so they appear to have made a good choice in him.

Banks was not likely the Giants’ first choice on their board, however. They were said to be in the market for a wide receiver and it just so happens that four studs were chosen right before they were on the clock in Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Quentin Johnson, May Flowers, and Jordan Addison.

The rest of the draft is still very much a mystery as injuries and underuse left much to be desired.

New York Giants: C-minus

Deonte Banks (No. 24) was a fun watch coming out of college and as a rookie showed the speed, physicality and competitive edge that made him a late riser in the draft process. Jalin Hyatt (No. 73) flashed some downfield ball-tracking skills, but he didn’t separate enough last season to be considered a long-term piece of this offense.

This year, the Giants hope to see some growth in center John Michael Schmitz, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, safety Gervarrius Owens, and defensive lineman Jordon Riley.

Eric Gray is expected to help fill the void left by Saquon Barkley and Hyatt still has to earn the trust of the coaches and quarterbacks.

CBS Sports ranks Giants’ 2023 rookie class in bottom half of NFL

The New York Giants made seven picks in the 2023 NFL draft and most felt confident that general manager Joe Schoen had made the right calls.

In need of talent at multiple positions, the Giants fared well with their limited stock, adding cornerback Deonte Banks, center John Michael Schmitz, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt with their first three selections.

They rounded things out with running back Eric Gray, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, defensive lineman Jordon Riley, and safety Gervarrius Owens.

All seven of those players saw time on the field this past season but the results weren’t quite what the Giants had hoped. Injuries derailed the development of several rookies while others were stunted due to misuse (see: Gray as a punt returner).

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently ranked all 32 draft classes from 2023 and the Giants landed in the bottom half of the league. However, he did credit them with two hits: Banks and Hyatt.

Hyatt didn’t exactly rekindle all of the magic he had at Tennessee winning down the field on a regular basis. But averaging over 16 yards per snag as a rookie demonstrated there’s a bright future for him if the development as a route runner continues. Sixth-round pick Tre Hawkins was respectable as a rotational cornerback. Second-round pick John Michael Schmitz really struggled with power before his injury. Banks had some hiccups in coverage but mostly dealt with No. 1 receivers in man coverage and snagged two picks while knocking away 11 passes.

Banks has the makings of a solid, long-term CB1 and although he struggled at times, Schmitz still has plenty of upside. Hyatt also performed better than his stats would indicate. He suffered due to poor offensive line and quarterback play.

The Giants remain hopeful that Hawkins can develop into a starter and that Riley eventually becomes a dominant interior defender.

New York Giants’ Jason Pinnock out vs. Philadelphia Eagles in Week 18

The New York Giants closed out their practice slate on Friday afternoon, wrapping up their third session (one being a walkthrough) in three days and their last of the season.

Beforehand, head coach Brian Daboll delivered the bad news that safety Jason Pinnock would miss Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles as the result of a toe injury.

“He won’t make the game,” Daboll revealed.

The news wasn’t as bad for several other players on the injury report, but Daboll did acknowledge that rookie cornerback Deonte Banks and rookie center John Michael Schmitz may end up as game-time decisions.

“Two guys that’ll be practicing today, Banks and John Michael,” Daboll said. “We’ll see where they’re at after practice.”

Meanwhile, safety Dane Belton returned to practice after missing Thursday’s session due to a non-injury-related personal issue.

John Michael Schmitz not practicing

The New York Giants returned to the field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles — their regular season finale.

Similar to a week ago, the Giants opted to go with a Wednesday walkthrough as opposed to a full practice.

“We’re going to do similar to what we did last week, which will be more of a walkthrough,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

The bad news was that two players were unable to participate in the walkthrough, indicating they are unlikely to play on Sunday afternoon.

“Pinnock will not do the walkthrough and John Michael won’t do the walkthrough,” Daboll said. “It’s more of (Pinnock’s) toe than it is his foot so we’ll see how it goes this week.

“Lower leg, ankle, kind of got leg-whipped a little bit in the game so we’ll see where (Schmitz) is at. Sore today.”

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL John Michael Schmitz (lower leg), S Jason Pinnock (toe)

Limited participant: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), LB Carter Coughlin (shoulder), CB Darnay Holmes (foot), QB Tyrod Taylor (back)

New York Giants’ Deonte Banks, Wan’Dale Robinson questionable vs. Rams

The New York Giants closed out their practice slate on Friday afternoon, wrapping up their third session (one being a walkthrough) in three days.

Once again, head coach Brian Daboll said that everyone would practice even though that has not been the case this week. This time, however, he was correct.

“Everybody will practice, then we’ll see where we’re at after practice,” he told reporters.

Considering how many injuries were listed this week, the Giants provided a relatively short final report.

Dexter Lawrence, 4 others miss practice

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

Because the Giants played on Christmas Day and are on a short week, head coach Brian Daboll limited the team to a walkthrough. They will conduct full practices on both Thursday and Friday.

Coming out of Monday’s game, the Giants were relatively healthy despite a few players (Darren Waller, Justin Pugh) getting banged up. Daboll said everyone would participate on at least a limited basis.

“We’re doing a walkthrough today so everybody will be participating in the walkthrough,” Daboll said.

The lie detector test determined that was a lie.

Several players sat out on Wednesday and several more were limited, including punter Jamie Gillan, who suffered a groin injury two weeks ago and a knee injury in the Giants’ loss to Philadelphia.

“We’ll see tomorrow but trending in the right direction,” Daboll said of Gillan.

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), TE Lawrence Cager (groin), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (elbow), OL Ben Bredeson (quad), P Jamie Gillan (groin/knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle), OL Justin Pugh (elbow), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (quad), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), TE Darren Waller (knee)
