New York Giants don’t fare well in 2023 NFL draft re-grade

The jury is still out on the 2023 NFL draft class but Diante Lee of The Athletic recently decided to grade the class after just one season.

The New York Giants had seven picks in the draft leading off with Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks at No. 24 overall. He started 15 games and was solid most of the season. He is now considered a No. 1 outside corner, so they appear to have made a good choice in him.

Banks was not likely the Giants’ first choice on their board, however. They were said to be in the market for a wide receiver and it just so happens that four studs were chosen right before they were on the clock in Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Quentin Johnson, May Flowers, and Jordan Addison.

The rest of the draft is still very much a mystery as injuries and underuse left much to be desired.

New York Giants: C-minus

Deonte Banks (No. 24) was a fun watch coming out of college and as a rookie showed the speed, physicality and competitive edge that made him a late riser in the draft process. Jalin Hyatt (No. 73) flashed some downfield ball-tracking skills, but he didn’t separate enough last season to be considered a long-term piece of this offense.

This year, the Giants hope to see some growth in center John Michael Schmitz, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, safety Gervarrius Owens, and defensive lineman Jordon Riley.

Eric Gray is expected to help fill the void left by Saquon Barkley and Hyatt still has to earn the trust of the coaches and quarterbacks.

CBS Sports ranks Giants’ 2023 rookie class in bottom half of NFL

The New York Giants made seven picks in the 2023 NFL draft and most felt confident that general manager Joe Schoen had made the right calls.

In need of talent at multiple positions, the Giants fared well with their limited stock, adding cornerback Deonte Banks, center John Michael Schmitz, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt with their first three selections.

They rounded things out with running back Eric Gray, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, defensive lineman Jordon Riley, and safety Gervarrius Owens.

All seven of those players saw time on the field this past season but the results weren’t quite what the Giants had hoped. Injuries derailed the development of several rookies while others were stunted due to misuse (see: Gray as a punt returner).

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently ranked all 32 draft classes from 2023 and the Giants landed in the bottom half of the league. However, he did credit them with two hits: Banks and Hyatt.

Hyatt didn’t exactly rekindle all of the magic he had at Tennessee winning down the field on a regular basis. But averaging over 16 yards per snag as a rookie demonstrated there’s a bright future for him if the development as a route runner continues. Sixth-round pick Tre Hawkins was respectable as a rotational cornerback. Second-round pick John Michael Schmitz really struggled with power before his injury. Banks had some hiccups in coverage but mostly dealt with No. 1 receivers in man coverage and snagged two picks while knocking away 11 passes.

Banks has the makings of a solid, long-term CB1 and although he struggled at times, Schmitz still has plenty of upside. Hyatt also performed better than his stats would indicate. He suffered due to poor offensive line and quarterback play.

The Giants remain hopeful that Hawkins can develop into a starter and that Riley eventually becomes a dominant interior defender.

New York Giants WR Jalin Hyatt wants to contribute more in 2024

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt opened eyes this past summer at training camp with his speed. He was clocked at 24 miles per hour, the fastest time ever registered since the league began measuring players’ running speed.

The Giants felt they had something special in Hyatt all along, having traded up in the third round to select him last spring and he was about to pay some lofty dividends.

But speed isn’t everything in football and Hyatt and the Giants would soon learn that. Although Hyatt was on the field for 50 percent of the offensive snaps, his receiving numbers did not match his blazing speed and promise.

Hyatt caught just 23 of 40 targets for 373 yards with no touchdowns. He did lead the team in average yards per reception, however (16.2), showing off a little bit of his big play potential, but overall his season was not what the team had hoped.

As the Giants packed up their gear after the season, Hyatt seemed to know that more was expected of him this season.

“I just want to keep getting better and keep grinding,” Hyatt said, via Sports Illustrated. “Stay off my feet a little bit at the beginning of this offseason but right back to the grind after that. I can’t wait.”

It appeared the jump from the college ranks at Tennessee to the NFL was a larger chasm than Hyatt had expected. Perhaps the Giants felt he was too green to rely on, throwing the ball to more experienced receivers such as Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Darren Waller and Saquon Barkley.

Hyatt did learn a few things in his rookie season, and plans on building on that knowledge.

“A lot more confident, and that just goes by experiencing games,” Hyatt said. “I feel like I know, fully this playbook and fully what I’ve got to do. At the beginning, I didn’t really know, starting off. Keep getting better. That’s the mindset I have for myself. I have high expectations, and it starts with the work in the offseason. That starts now.

“I definitely want to contribute more, that’s for sure. I felt like I did alright this year, but I left some plays out there that I wish I had back. I think the expectations for next year for myself are to be better and get better, be more consistent, get open more, and make more plays when they come to me. That’s my expectation.”

The Giants undoubtedly share similar expectations.

Studs and duds from New York Giants’ Week 18 win vs. Eagles

The New York Giants closed out the regular season with a wildly unexpected drubbing of the Philadelphia Eagles — something they hadn’t done to such a degree since 2012.

The game was over by halftime with the Giants leading 24-0 and the Eagles waiving the white flag. Head coach Nick Sirianni began pulling his starters, acknowledging they could no longer compete with Big Blue.

Although the game itself meant nothing to the Giants in terms of playoff seeding, it was significant in the sense that it ended Philly’s dominant reign.

Here is a look at some of the studs and duds (and studly duds) from the Week 18 victory.

Headed into free agency, safety Xavier McKinney put on a show against the Eagles. He was all over the field, recording five tackles (three solo), three passes defensed, and two interceptions. His first INT was a thing of beauty as he toe-tapped the line and somehow managed to keep his feet in.

There weren’t many negatives for the Giants on the day so filling out the “duds” section requires some creativity. Unfortunately for Tommy DeVito, that means his short and non-productive stint in the game lands him here. He completed two passes for 14 yards, took a sack, and left the game limping only to briefly return later.

Veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke may have started the season slowly, but he sure finished strong. Like McKinney, he was all over the field on Sunday and made an impact in a multitude of ways. He finished the game with eight tackles (five solo, one for a loss), one pass defensed, one QB hit, and one sack.

Al Bello/Getty Images

It’s difficult to criticize a player due to injury but rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt saw his season come to an unceremonious end for that exact season. He capped things off with one reception for five yards and made no impact whatsoever. Hyatt did have one chance on a deep ball but wasn’t able to win the contested catch.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson flashed repeatedly over the final weeks of the season and that includes Sunday’s win over the Eagles. The second-year soon-to-be star hauled in five receptions for 85 yards, many of those coming after the catch. He likely would have put up better numbers but the Giants desperately tried to get Sterling Shepard involved late.

With injuries mounting in the secondary, Wink Martindale turned to rookie cornerback Tre Hawkins for the first time in quite a while. The result was not what the Giants had hoped as Hawkins struggled, missing a couple of tackles and then surrendering a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

It was a strange day for Tyrod Taylor, who exited the game on two separate occasions due to different injuries. But with DeVito also banged up, he ended up toughing it out and finishing with 297 yards passing, 38 yards rushing, one touchdown, one interception, and one fumble. He also repeatedly held the ball too long, leading to some unnecessary hits.

Giants’ Jalin Hyatt, World of Hyatt partnering for FIND experience

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt just had his best game as a pro before the bye week against the New England Patriots.

This week, World of Hyatt is launching the “A Weekend in the Cleats of a Pro-Football Rookie” campaign. The campaign will feature an exclusive experience for one fan and their guest for the Giants’ season finale and Hyatt’s final game as a rookie.

Starting Tuesday, December 12, fans can enter to take part in the Jalin Hyatt FIND experience in New York City. The package will include the following:

  • Two (2) tickets to the New York Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles game at Metlife Stadium (January 6 or 7, 2024)
  • Two-night stay in the 1-bedroom Sleep Suite by Bryte at Park Hyatt New York
  • A virtual meet and greet with Jalin Hyatt
  • Experience includes two (2) day passes to the pool and steam room at Park Hyatt New York for up to two (2) guests. Valid length of stay.
  • Experience includes one (1) massage or specialty spa treatment at Spa Nalai with a value of up to $250.00 including tax and gratuity.
  • Experience includes one (1) in-room cold bath spa service for one (1) guest.
  • Experience includes two (2) full breakfasts (which includes one entrée or standard breakfast buffet, juice, and coffee, as well as tax, gratuity, and service charges) for each registered guest in the room, up to a maximum of two (2) guests.
  • Experience includes a credit for up to $200.00 USD (plus tax and gratuities) for dinner at The Living Room restaurant or in-room service at Park Hyatt New York during your stay. Only valid at the time of stay and additional charges are the responsibility of the guest.
  • Two (2) football jerseys signed by Jalin Hyatt
  • Transportation to and from the stadium

*Experience is for two (2) people*

Last year, Hyatt’s partnership with World of Hyatt began with an NIL deal and the continuing partnership is something that excites the Giants receiver.

“We’re doing a FIND experience, something new we are doing. World of Hyatt members will have a chance to enter and get this chance to stay at the Park Hyatt and stay there two nights,” Haytt told Giants Wire.

“Park Hyatt is one of the most luxurious places you can stay and you’ll get the whole experience of the Jalin Hyatt experience and you’ll have that chance to get that virtual interview with myself. It will definitely be fun for whoever gets it. So, I can’t wait for this and this is definitely one of my favorite things that we are adding onto what we are trying to do with Hyatt.”

Hyatt sat down with Giants Wire ahead of the campaign and said the partnership with World of Hyatt was much more than due to his last name matching up with the company.

“I think that was one of them but at the same time, when you have the same mindset and what we are trying to do to give back to the community. So there are other things to it. But my (last) name was one of the reasons.”

Hyatt, of course, fell to the third round of the 2023 NFL draft where the Giants saw an opportunity to get a unique talent much later than most expected him to go.

New York Giants WR Jalin Hyatt named Pepsi Rookie of the Week

Don’t look now, but the New York Giants are surging. They’ve won two straight games and have repositioned themselves in the NFC playoff race.

They’ve also won the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks — rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito after a win over the Washington Commanders and now, rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt following a victory over the New England Patriots.

Hyatt beat out several others, including Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers, for the nod.

The rookie out of Tennessee hauled in five of his six targets for 109 yards and a long of 41 yards. Two of his first down catches were highlighted by impressive field awareness and Amani Toomer-like toe-tapping.

For Hyatt, it was his first career 100-yard game.

“He’s quarterback friendly,” quarterback Tommy DeVito said after the Week 12 win. “I mean anybody that’s that fast and can make the plays that he makes is quarterback friendly, so it makes a lot easier to put those balls up for him, but he’s just a special individual. Special player, route runner, whatever you want to call it and he’s a confident dude. He tells me he’s like ‘I’m going to go get this ball for you’ like if we call this, I’m going to make play. So, it takes a lot off my shoulders.”

With his role on offense increasing by the week, Hyatt is becoming more and more productive, and more and more dangerous. Defenses simply can not match his speed or footwork.

What we learned from Giants' 10-7 win over Patriots

The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 10-7, in the rain at MetLife on Sunday in a game that pitted the league’s two lowest-scoring teams against one another.

The low-scoring affair was not unexpected, to say the least, but Giant fans were thankful to come away with their second straight victory.

Here are three things we learned in Week 12.

Rookie defensive tackle Jordon Riley, playing in just his third NFL game due to the injury to Lawrence, left the game in the second quarter with a finger injury and returned in the second half.

Linebacker Micah McFadden came off the field with a left arm injury early in the third quarter and received medical attention. He returned shortly after.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton came off the field holding his right arm in the fourth quarter. He was listed with a neck injury this week and the two could be related.

Special teamer Carter Coughlin injured his hip and was ruled out in the fourth quarter.

Studs and duds from New York Giants’ Week 12 win vs. Patriots

The New York Giants took on the New England Patriots at a rainy MetLife Stadium on Sunday and the play on the field was about as ugly as the second-half weather.

Both the Giants and Patriots resembled the 2- and 3-win teams they are and showed why they are near the bottom of the league in most metrics. It was an ugly slog of a game that seemed to draw on and on.

Tackling was abhorrent, drops were abundant, missed assignments were frequent and there were precious few highlights over 60 game minutes. It was just a poor display of NFL football.

In the end, the Giants hung on thanks to three Patriots interceptions and a missed chip-shot field as time expired. Oogly.

Here is a look at some of the studs and duds (and studly duds) from the Week 12 win.

Al Bello/Getty Images

If there was a star on Sunday afternoon in East Rutherford, it was rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. He dazzled with his speed and footwork, hauling in five receptions on six targets for 109 yards. It was the first 100-yard performance for the third-round pick.

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

You won’t find tight end Daniel Bellinger in the box score but that lack of production isn’t what landed him here. He struggled mightily as a blocker, missing blitz pickups in pass protection while getting beaten as a run blocker. His regression in 2022 has been jarring.

Elsa/Getty Images

Linebacker Bobby Okereke did miss a couple of tackles on Sunday (who didn’t?) but was arguably the best defender on the field. He was second on the Giants with eight tackles (seven solo), adding two passes defensed and an interception that was returned for 55 yards.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

If there was a worse offender for misses on Sunday, let us know in the comments below. Not only did linebacker Isaiah Hodgins whiff on several tackles, but he also let a would-be interception go right off his fingertips. It was a game of almosts for Simmons one week removed from a game-sealing pick-6.

Al Bello/Getty Images

Rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito is still struggling to adjust to the processing speed at the NFL level and his pocket presence leaves a bit to be desired but all things considered, he played quite well. Other rookie quarterbacks have struggled much more mightily against Bill Belichick and DeVito held his own. He finished the game going 17-25 for 191 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. He was credited with two fumbles (one lost).

Ron Jenkins/Getty Images

It’s becoming clear that Sterling Shepard’s days in New York are coming to an end. He’s not the same receiver he once was despite showing flashes here and there, and Sunday’s performance was evidence of that. Shepard hauled in one reception on three targets for six yards, zero yards after the catch, and one drop.

Al Bello/Getty Images

Linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was credited with another sack, bringing his season total to 11.5, but his play outside of that was so-so. He made a terrific open-field tackle of Ezekiel Elliott to save a potential first down, but also overpursued at times, got eaten up by opposing blockers and otherwise struggled to generate consistent pressure.
