Giants’ John Michael Schmitz reveals his ‘welcome to the NFL’ moment

New York Giants center John Michael Schmitz had an up-and-down rookie season in 2023 and appears to be ready to take the next step to become one of the NFL’s top centers.

Schmitz started 13 games for Big Blue as a rookie and showed signs of his draft pedigree (he was taken 57th overall in Round 2 last year) and was named to Bucky Brooks’ 2023 All-Rookie Team.

In a recent interview with KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, where Schmitz played his college ball for the Gophers of Minnesota, he reflected on his “welcome to the NFL” moment from last year.

“I would say going against one of the best nose tackles in the NFL every single day at practice,” he said. “Dexter Lawrence — he’ll definitely make you a lot better real quick. He’s a great player (and) great person off the field as well. He just pushes you to be a better player.”

Schmitz isn’t the only Gopher on the Giants’ roster. Carter Coughlin, a reserve linebacker and special teams ace who was recently re-signed, has helped Schmitz along with his acclimation to the New York and the NFL.

“It’s great. I mean, we definitely just chit-chat about everything,” Schmitz said. “You go through your thought times and, obviously, me and him being pretty close with the Gophers. . . it’s nice to have someone like that, that I already have a bond with. Just someone to kind of lean on and ask those questions, like, ‘Hey, can you help me out here?’ Like, ‘What do I do?’ It’s nice to have a Gopher on the team.”

Meanwhile, Schmitz is already working hard this offseason and plans to arrive at organized team activities (OTAs) in regular season shape.

John Michael Schmitz not practicing

The New York Giants returned to the field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles — their regular season finale.

Similar to a week ago, the Giants opted to go with a Wednesday walkthrough as opposed to a full practice.

“We’re going to do similar to what we did last week, which will be more of a walkthrough,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

The bad news was that two players were unable to participate in the walkthrough, indicating they are unlikely to play on Sunday afternoon.

“Pinnock will not do the walkthrough and John Michael won’t do the walkthrough,” Daboll said. “It’s more of (Pinnock’s) toe than it is his foot so we’ll see how it goes this week.

“Lower leg, ankle, kind of got leg-whipped a little bit in the game so we’ll see where (Schmitz) is at. Sore today.”

NFL rescinded New York Giants LB Carter Coughlin’s Week 12 fine

Following the New York Giants’ Week 12 victory over the New England Patriots, linebacker Carter Coughlin was fined $5,764 by the league.

Coughlin had laid out Patriots return man Ty Montgomery with what seemed like a perfect tackle. It was not flagged on the field, but the NFL later determined otherwise, thus laying down the fine.

This was the hit:

The response from Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey was largely frustration. How else was Coughlin supposed to make that tackle? He didn’t go high, he didn’t go low, he didn’t lower his head. It was a textbook tackle that the NFL somehow decided was illegal.

The good news for Coughlin is that the NFL rescinded his fine after he appealed the decision.

The NFL admits it was wrong to fine Carter for a legal hit with rescinding the fine, but it still doesn’t feel like enough. The league has to do better by its players. Not only did this create unnecessary work for who knows how many NFL employees, but it created a rift between players and the league.

Referees are humans, too, and not infallible, so there are instances where the league will have to intervene and punish players for overly nasty hits. But this is taking it too far — the league does not need to intervene as much as they are.

The good news for Coughlin is that he doesn’t have to pay that silly fine now and he can fully focus on facing the Eagles on Monday.

Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

The New York Giants enjoyed an off day on Friday with their final practice scheduled for Saturday ahead of a Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With most players away from team facilities, that meant little change in terms of injury status. However, the Giants still moved forward with a projected injury report.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a projected non-participant due to a hamstring issue that has plagued him for several weeks.

“He’s still working through his hamstring,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters this week.

Even with an extra day off this week, Sexy Dexy seems unlikely to suit up on Monday afternoon against the Eagles.

Dexter Lawrence, Xavier McKinney not practicing

The New York Giants were back on the practice field Thursday ahead of a scheduled day off and were down a starter.

Kicker Randy Bullock has been placed on season-ending injured reserve (IR) with a hamstring issue. He will be replaced by fellow kicker Cade York, who is currently on the practice squad, for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, all eyes were on the Giants’ trio of defensive tackles — Dexter Lawrence, A’Shawn Robinson, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, all of whom are banged up.

Lawrence and Nunez-Roches continued to sit out while Robinson was limited.

Dexter Lawrence limited in practice

The New York Giants returned to the field on Friday for their second of three full practices ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Once again, all eyes were on nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal.

As expected, Neal did not participate in practice and is unlikely to play on Monday night. However, as head coach Brian Daboll previously alluded, Lawrence saw his workload increase and could, potentially, be available against Green Bay.

Lawrence was officially limited, which was the same as his Thursday projection.

Dexter Lawrence takes step toward return

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and then had off on Thursday ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

On Wednesday, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal were not participating due to their respective injuries.

Head coach Brian Daboll did express hope that Lawrence could return to practice on Friday, but shared far less optimism as it related to Neal.

“Yeah, I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful he’ll be out here on Friday. That’s what I’m hoping,” Daboll said told reporters.

True to his word, Lawrence took a projected step forward on Thursday and was listed as a projected participant in practice. Neal, on the other hand, remained out.

If Neal misses Monday night’s game, it will be his fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.

Meanwhile, Daboll indicated that tight end Darren Waller would remain on injured reserve (IR) for one more week and hinted that cornerback Aaron Robinson may not play at all this season.

“Not sure,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

NFL slaps New York Giants’ Xavier McKinney, Carter Coughlin with fines

The New York Giants upset the New England Patriots, 10-7, in Week 12 and then immediately headed into their bye week. But when they return on Monday, two players will have envelopes from the league waiting for them.

Safety Xavier McKinney was fined $13,659 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty committed with just seconds remaining in the game.

For McKinney, this is his second (known) fine of the season. He was also docked $14,833 for a late hit on Terry McLaurin back in Week 7.

In addition to McKinney, linebacker Carter Coughlin was fined $5,764 for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter. He was not penalized on the play, so his fine will likely be appealed.

Apparently, in the mind of league officials, Coughlin is just supposed to let the return man run right by him as opposed to making the tackle. Or something.

Meanwhile, linebacker Cam Brown was not fined for a big special teams hit on wide receiver Pop Douglas. The Patriots were furious over the play and Douglas ended up in concussion protocol.

“The refs need to do something about that because that’s some (expletive). They need to either throw a flag or something,” Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker said after the game. “This ain’t no (expletive) wrestling.”

“To me, that’s a joke. You can’t say you care about player safety and not flag that play,” Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers added.

The Patriots did not receive any fines from the league.

New York Giants hang on, defeat Patriots, 10-7, in ugly Week 12 affair

Rookie defensive tackle Jordon Riley, playing in just his third NFL game due to the injury to Lawrence, left the game in the second quarter with a finger injury and returned in the second half.

Linebacker Micah McFadden came off the field with a left arm injury early in the third quarter and received medical attention. He returned shortly after.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton came off the field holding his right arm in the fourth quarter. He was listed with a neck injury this week and the two could be related.

Special teamer Carter Coughlin injured his hip and was ruled out in the fourth quarter.

Offense, defense and ST snap counts

The New York Giants made their 2023 preseason debut at MetLife Stadium on Friday night a picked up a 21-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

It was a crisp showing from the first-team offense, led by the dynamic combination of quarterback Daniel Jones and tight end Darren Waller. There was also solid play from the starting offensive line, which seems to have significantly improved their pass protection.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ victory.

Offensive snaps: 65
Defensive snaps: 63
Special teams snaps: 21

After missing the first week of the preseason, second-year right tackle Evan Neal was on the field for 34 offensive snaps — second-most on the team. The Giants obviously wanted to get a good look at him and have Neal knock some of the rust off.

Veteran running back James Robinson took just four snaps and doesn’t seem like a player destined to stick around.

Rookies continue to get plenty of playing time to boost their game experience ahead of the regular season, while fringe players like Oshane Ximines and Carter Coughlin also continue to get extended looks.
