iPhone 15 Series Gets Deep Discounts by Chinese Retailers as Analysts Point to Weak Sales

Chinese e-commerce platforms including PDD Holdings’ Pinduoduo and Alibaba’s Taobao are offering deep discounts on Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series, with some selling models up to CNY 900 ($123 or roughly Rs. 10,229) below the retail price.

Analysts say the iPhone 15 has not been selling as well in China as its predecessor. Counterpoint Research said last week that iPhone 15 sales in China were down 4.5 percent versus the iPhone 14 in the first 17 days after its market launch.

Apple, Pinduoduo and Alibaba did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In China, Apple will occasionally allow partner vendors to offer discounts to spur demand. But Chinese e-commerce platforms have also been locked in a “value for money” battle as consumers tighten their belts amid a slowing economy, with discounting a key focus of forthcoming annual Singles Day shopping festival.

Pinduoduo is offering the 128 GB version of the iPhone 15 Plus at CNY 6,098 (roughly Rs. 69,312), CNY 900 less than Apple’s retail price of CNY 6,999 (roughly Rs. 79,553), according to checks made by Reuters.

The 512 GB iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a CNY 11,999 (roughly Rs. 1,36,385) price tag in Apple’s store, can be bought for CNY 10,698 (roughly Rs. 1,21,598) on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Taobao.

The e-commerce platform iPhone 15 discounts were first reported by The Economic Observer weekly newspaper on Monday.

Last month, Counterpoint data showed that Apple was expected to gain a larger share of India’s smartphone sales, with the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models accounting for more of its shipments. The company is projected to account for 7 percent of all smartphone sales in the country from July to December, up from 5 percent in the first half of 2023.

Google Pixel 8 Pro Survives Durability Test, Fares Better Than iPhone 15 Pro Max

Google Pixel 8 series, which includes Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, was launched earlier this month on October 4. The smartphones from the tech giant are powered by a Tensor G3 chip and run on Android 14 out-of-the-box. The Pro variant has recently secured the top rank in the DxOMark display test ranking. It was recently tested for its durability, and the Pixel 8 Pro seems to have performed better than most of its contemporaries, including the recently launched iPhone 15 Pro Max.

YouTuber Jack, popularly known by his channel name JerryRigEverything, has recently tested the Pixel 8 Pro for its durability. The smartphone was tested for seven years worth of damage. As per his claims, the flagship model presents the brightest screen ever made by Google, protected by a Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The power and volume button of the smartphone, which is made from recycled aluminium, can be removed easily with the help of a knife. The side panels of the Pixel 8 Pro visibly got some damage with knife scratches.

The YouTuber then put the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro together to show how the two smartphones differ when it comes to rear magnetic charging abilities. The Google smartphone also gets an infrared thermometer placed next to the LED flashlight. It can test the temperature of a body which is located within a radius of 2 inches and doesn’t work for humans.

When put to fire test, the smartphone got a permanent burn mark after 17 seconds of getting in touch with the flame. However, despite damage to the screen, the fingerprint scanner of the smartphone worked the same. In the bend test, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max completely failed, the Pixel 8 Pro performed well in the structural strength show, with no cracks or fractures.

To recall specifications, the Pixel 8 Pro features a 6.7-inch Quad-HD (1,344×2,992 pixels) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It packs a 5,050mAh battery with support for 30W wired charging.

iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button Lets You Replace Siri With Voice-Enabled ChatGPT: Report

The iPhone 15 series made its debut earlier this month at Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ event, bringing in a host of new changes to the company’s traditional design. Most notably, the new phones ditched the much-maligned lightening port for the standardised USB Type-C. iPhone 15 Pro models also did away with the series regular mute switch, opting instead for a customisable Action Button, that really just blows up possibilities of what you can do on an iPhone 15 Pro with the tap of a button. Since the Action Button can be assigned to an array of apps and functionalities, including the Shortcuts app on iPhone, pretty much every app can now be bound to it. And as some have discovered, you can now use ChatGPT as your voice assistant in place of Siri on iPhone 15 Pro.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s wildly popular generative AI chatbot, received support for voice conversations earlier this week, enabling it to have natural back-and-forth conversation with users. This feature, currently only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, essentially transforms the chatbot into an AI-powered voice assistant. Now, with the help of Apple’s new Action Button, ChatGPT can easily replace Siri as the go-to voice assistant on iPhone 15 Pro. As ZDNet first spotted, the ChatGPT app on iOS can be bound to the Action Button using the Shortcuts app.

Simply download OpenAI’s ChatGPT app from the App Store — it’s free. Then, head to Settings>Action Button on your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, and then swipe to select Shortcuts option. Then, you tap on ‘Choose a feature’ and simply select the ChatGPT app. This would bind the ChatGPT app on iPhone to the Action Button, allowing you to bring up the app from your homescreen with a single tap.

Since ChatGPT is now voice-enabled it can effectively substitute Siri as the default voice assistant on iPhone 15 Pro. As mentioned before, however, the voice features are only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise subscribers for now. A ChatGPT Plus subscription starts at $20 (roughly Rs. 1,660) per month. iPhone users can already use the popular Google Assistant in place of Siri via its dedicated iOS app. The app can also be bound to a Shortcut, so that when you say “hey, Siri, hey, Google,” Siri redirects you to the Google Assistant for your queries.

Additionally, ChatGPT Plus users can now also surf the Web beyond ChatGPT’s September 2021 cutoff date. OpenAI announced Thursday that ChatGPT users can start browsing the Internet and, essentially expanding the data the chatbot can access beyond its earlier September 2021 cutoff. So, now with the Action Button, iPhone 15 Pro users could also access updated information off the Web via ChatGPT. This feature is also currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, but OpenAI plans to expand it to all users soon.

iPhone 15 Pro Series Overheating Issues Not Related to TSMC’s 3nm Chip Manufacturing: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users are reportedly facing overheating issues on the company’s latest flagship smartphones, sparking speculation that the new A17 Pro chip on the high-end models in the iPhone 15 lineup could be the cause of the issue. However, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has weighed in on the purported overheating issue affecting Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and states that the issue is due to changes made to the internal design of both models.

In a Medium post, Kuo states that his market survey shows the alleged overheating issues are not connected with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) advanced 3nm node. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with a 3nm A17 Pro chip produced by the Taiwanese chipmaker, while the regular models feature last year’s A16 Bionic chipset that was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The analyst claims that the overheating issues said to affect the new iPhone models are likely to be caused by changes made by Apple to the thermal design of both handsets — this year, the Cupertino company used a titanium frame and reduced the heat dissipation area, according to Kuo.

While many users have reportedly complained that heating issues affecting the iPhone 15 Pro models can cause temperatures to rise as high as 46 degrees Celsius (116 degrees Fahrenheit), a South Korean YouTube channel posted a video using a thermal imaging camera to show the rising temperatures of the phones.

It might be possible for Apple to mitigate some of the issues by rolling out a software update to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the analyst claims. However, doing so would likely require the company to restrict the processor’s performance. Kuo also warns that shipments of the iPhone 15 Pro models could be affected if the overheating issues are not resolved by the company.

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max Being Sold at Premium of Up to Rs 20,000 Above Official Price: Report

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max were launched in India earlier this month, and the company’s latest flagship handsets are reportedly being sold at a much higher premium compared to the official retail prices of both models. According to recent reports, demand for the latest iPhone 15 handsets is high in several markets — including India. This has pushed the deliveries of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to November in some markets, according to recent reports.

While the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max went on sale in India and global markets for the first time on September 22, the company’s smartphones are currently out of stock from various authorised retailers across the country. News 18 reports that these handsets are being sold at a premium — over and above their original retail prices.

Phone calls made to retailers in cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Thane by the publication revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max Natural Titanium variant with 256GB of storage was on sale for Rs. 20,000 over the MRP of Rs. 1,59,900. Similarly, the iPhone 15 Pro Titanium Blue model with 256GB of inbuilt storage was Rs. 1,51,000 — or Rs. 6,000 more than the price set by Apple.

The price of the iPhone 15 Pro in Jaipur was Rs. 8,000 higher than the retail price of the handset in India, according to the report. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which costs Rs. 1,99,900 in India for the 1TB variant, is reportedly available for Rs. 2,32.000 via a retailer in Thane, Maharashtra.

Earlier this month, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple was facing production challenges with the iPhone 15 Pro Max amid “robust” demand for the phone. At the time, Kuo stated that the challenges related to producing the iPhone 15 Pro Max were “more pronounced” than the other models. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max went on sale in India and global markets on September 22, ten days after the company launched the handsets at its ‘Wonderlust’ event on September 12.

Apple Starts Selling Assembled in India iPhone 15 Models on Launch Day for First Time

iPhone 15 series including iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max hit the stores on Friday (September 22) in India and other countries. For the first time, the Cupertino-based company made the India-built iPhone 15 models available in the country and other parts of the world on the global sales debut day. Apple previously shipped made-in-India iPhone units later than the initial launch date. The new models could have been manufactured at Apple assembler Foxconn’s plant in Chennai. The latest iPhone lineup was introduced on September 12 during the “Wonderlust” event and they went on pre-order last Friday (September 15).

Apple started shipping the iPhone 15 series earlier today, and devices assembled in India are available to customers in the country on the first day of sale simultaneously with the China-made handsets. Multiple customers including celebrities like R Madhavan took to X to share a picture of their India-made iPhone 15 model. The units were said to be manufactured in Apple assembler Foxconn’s Chennai factory.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said this is a milestone for the country. “Indians now accessing the latest products without waiting. We expect the iPhone 15 to be exported from India to the world soon. Congratulations, Team Apple”, he said on X.

In previous years, Apple shipped iPhone models manufactured in India later than the initial launch date. In 2022, the iPhone 14 models went on sale within 10 days of the global launch. The latest move by Apple is considered as a step towards diversifying the manufacturing capacity in India in light of the geopolitical tensions between the United States and China.

Apple is looking to turn India into a global hub for manufacturing its handsets. The company is now reportedly producing 7 percent of its iPhone models in the country. Apple’s India retail stores — Apple BKC store in Mumbai and the Apple Saket store in Delhi — opened doors for customers in April this year.

Apple is depending on Indian factories for the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models. A recent report claimed that Apple will produce the iPhone 15 Plus locally at Foxconn’s plant in Chennai in the upcoming quarter. Foxconn’s Chennai factory employs 40,000 people. The iPhone assembling company is also investing $600 million (roughly Rs. 4,975 crore) for two projects in Karnataka to make casing components for iPhones and chip-making equipment. Other Apple suppliers like Pegatron and Wistron are also expected to soon assemble the iPhone 15.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 series during its ‘Wonderlust’ event last week. The latest handsets feature a USB Type-C port and have a titanium build. They all come with Dynamic Island and run iOS 17 out-of-the-box. The iPhone 15 models run on the A16 Bionic chip, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro are equipped with the A17 Pro chip.

Price of the iPhone 15 in India starts at Rs. 79,900 for the base model, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts at Rs. 89,900. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, has a starting price of Rs. 1,39,900, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max price begins at Rs. 1,59,900. They are currently up for sale through Apple’s online store, Apple BKC, Saket, e-commerce websites, and official retail outlets.

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max Sales Expected to Increase Apple’s Smartphone Share in India: Report

Apple is expected to gain a larger share of India’s smartphone sales, with the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models accounting for more of its shipments. The company is projected to account for 7 percent of all smartphone sales in the country from July to December, up from 5 percent in the first half of 2023, according to data from market researcher Counterpoint shared exclusively with Reuters.

The tech giant has been touting India as its next big growth driver amid declining sales of its flagship device. Its suppliers have also been ramping up manufacturing operations in the region amid weakening demand and regulatory pressure in China.

Wait times in India for Apple’s latest 15 Pro and Pro Max models, which go on sale Friday, are stretching up to late October, mirroring trends seen in China and the US. Counterpoint estimated the models will account for 25 percent of overall iPhone 15 shipments in India in the fourth quarter, a 4 percent increase from what the previous generation top-range models accounted for a year earlier.

“The premium smartphone market in India has climbed tremendously from 0.8 percent of the total market in 2019 to 6.1 percent in the first half of 2023 and this is largely attributed to Apple’s success,” Nabila Popal, a research director at market intelligence firm IDC, said.

Apple is the largest player in the segment for smartphones priced over $800 (roughly Rs. 66,300) in India, with a 67 percent share in the first half, according to IDC data. Samsung accounted for 31 percent of the segment. Apple opened two flagship stores in the country earlier this year and CEO Tim Cook said in August that the company hit “record” revenue in India in the June quarter.

Still, Apple has a long way to go before the country could bring in sales seen in the company’s major markets. Morgan Stanley, in a note earlier this month, estimated that Apple’s revenue from India is about half that of China.
