iPhone 15 Pro Displays Tipped to Come With Thinner Bezels, Curved Edges

With the launch of Apple’s next iPhone models still several months away, the rumour mill is starting to catch up. Earlier leaks about the iPhone 15 Pro models hinted at solid-state volume and power buttons and the use of titanium (instead of stainless steel) for the frames. Now, a new rumour now tips at more changes to the display design hinting that it will feature thinner bezels and curved edges, but laid out in a manner that’s similar to the outgoing Apple Watch models.

A series of tweets by tipster @AppleShrimpPro, suggests the details about the displays of the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The tipster claims that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro models will feature displays with noticeably thinner bezels and curved edges. However, the curved edges apply only to the cover glass, as the displays below them are said to be flat. In all probability, it will have the effect of a curved edge display just like on the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8 models where the display glass seamlessly blends into the rounded side frame (or case). The iPhone 15 models are also said to come with flat displays and curved edge glass.

The tipster also states that the new models will feature the same display sizes as the currently available iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. Additionally, the standard iPhone 15 models are also tipped to get Dynamic Island cutouts that have been exclusive to the ‘Pro’ models launched last year. All models could also get the Ceramic Shield treatment as well like with the outgoing models. The source mentions that there are no expected upgrades to Dynamic Island with the iPhone 15 models.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro models are said to get the maximum number of upgrades this year as per a recent report. While TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously explained in a note that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models would feature a new frame and solid-state buttons (with two additional Taptic Engines), he recently emphasised on the same giving out more details stating that the parts come from Cirrus Logic. He also explained that if users adapt to the new solid-state buttons, Apple could add them on more “high-end” models. The additional Taptic motors are said to simulate the feel of pressing down a button without actually moving the button just like Apple has managed to do with its trackpad on recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops.

With all the expected upgrades, Apple is also said to raise the price of its iPhone 15 Pro models in 2024. The base iPhone 15 Pro model, according to a recent report, is said to start from over a thousand dollars. The source explained that the reason for doing so is to broaden the gap between the standard models and the Pro models because the standard models are expected to gain more ‘Pro’-grade features like Dynamic Island and higher resolution cameras. Apple’s new iPhone lineup, going by tradition, is expected to be announced in September this year.

iPhone 14 Pro Successor Could Feature TSMC’s 3nm SoCs, May be Most Powerful Phones in 2023: Report

Apple iPhone 15 Pro models will be the most powerful handset on the market in 2023, a recent report claims. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly referred to as TSMC, will soon reportedly enter mass production with their rumoured 3nm SoC. The company stated that Apple would be its main customer for the 3nm processor in 2023, as per the report. The N3E version of the mobile processor is said to be available only after Apple launches the iPhone 15 Pro models, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could be the first 3nm chip to power an Android phone in 2024.

According to a report by DigiTimes, first spotted by PhoneArena, iPhone 15 Pro models will be the most powerful smartphones in 2023. The report cites TSMC’s N3E production schedule to share that Apple will be its main customer for the 3nm chips in 2023. Meanwhile, the company will reportedly deliver the new chip to other smartphone brands in 2024.

The report suggests that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro lineup that could succeed the iPhone 14 series that is expected to launch on September 7, will be the first major smartphone lineup to feature the 3nm chips with the Apple A17 Bionic SoC.

Android smartphones could be powered by the first 3nm chip in 2024, in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, according to the report. Unlike Qualcomm, MediaTek will reportedly launch 3nm processors made by TSMC by the end of 2023. The report added that the new N3E version will not feature in smartphones before Apple unveils the iPhone 15 Pro models. The new 3nm processors are said to enter mass production soon.

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared that the iPhone 15 is expected to be mass produced in India and China at the same time in 2023. Kuo also said that the iPhone 14 series production in India is about six weeks behind schedule than China, but the gap is narrowing.

Apple is set to host the ‘Far Out’ event on September 7. The iPhone 14 series is expected to be unveiled during the launch event. The series is said to include the vanilla iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. According to a report, the rumoured iPhone 14 Max could be launched with iPhone 14 Plus branding.

New iPhone Models With USB Type-C Port Reportedly in Testing

Apple is reportedly gearing up to pack the USB Type-C port on its future iPhone models. The Cupertino-based company is preparing to replace the old Lightning charging port with the USB Type-C on the handsets. However, the change may not take place until 2023. Currently, Apple’s MacBook and iPad models have a USB Type-C port. The tech giant is also said to be working on an adapter that would allow future iPhones to work with accessories designed for the current Lightning connector.

As per a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working to change the iPhone’s charging port and the company is testing new iPhones and adapters with USB Type-C connectivity. According to the report, Apple is likely to retain the Lightning connector for this year’s new models and the changeover ‘wouldn’t occur until 2023’ at the earliest.

At present, Apple’s iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Mini offer USB Type-C connectivity, while accessories like AirPods, and the Apple TV remote, use the Lightning connector. The European Union’s push toward imposing a universal charger for smartphones is said to be the key driving force behind Apple’s move to consider the change. The European Commission believes that a standard cable for all devices will cut back on electronic waste as well.

The report comes a few days after reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple would be swapping out the Lightning port for USB-C in the second half of 2023. The purported iPhone 15 models are said to come equipped with a USB Type-C port.

Apple first introduced the Lightning port with the iPhone 5 in 2012. The company added the USB Type-C port to the MacBook Pro back in 2016.

The company is reportedly working on iPhone 14 series. The lineup is expected to include four models — iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
