Apple to Launch Refreshed iPad Air, iPad Pro Models in Two Display Sizes in 2024: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is planning on launching refreshed versions of the iPad Air and iPad Pro in 2024, according to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a new Medium blog post, Kuo claims that Apple will release a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model for the first time, alongside the regular 10.9-inch model. The upgraded iPad Pro models will feature the company’s new M3 chip and sport OLED displays, according to the analyst. Apple could also launch new iPad mini and 11th generation iPad models next year.

According to Kuo, Apple is planning to launch a 10.9-inch iPad Air model in the first quarter of 2024, that will be accompanied by a new 12.9-inch model. It will be equipped with the same Liquid Retina display as the smaller iPad Air, but will offer better performance thanks to an oxide backplane (the combination of the thin film transistor (TFT) and the substrate used for the display) that is also used on Apple’s current-generation iPad Pro models with Mini-LED displays.

The analyst states that Apple will also launch two new iPad Pro models that will ditch Mini-LED displays for OLED screens, between the first and second quarters of 2024. These models are expected to sport a new form factor and will be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chip — offering better display quality and power efficiency compared to existing iPad Pro models. A market research firm recently predicted that the larger iPad Pro model will sport a slightly larger 13-inch display.

Kuo predicts that Apple will ship around 6 to 8 million iPad Pro models in 2024, attributing the prediction for lower shipments to a possible price hike due to the addition of OLED screens. Meanwhile, the larger iPad Pro model could also face competition from the company’s purported 12.9-inch iPad Air model.

In the second half of 2024, Apple could launch a new iPad mini model, while the company is also expected to launch a refreshed 11th generation iPad, while production of the 9th Gen model — the last one to feature a Lightning port — will be finally phased out by the end of the year, according to Kuo.

Apple Shares Weakens After Warning of Dull Holiday Quarter

Apple shares on Friday pared losses that were driven by its forecast for a subdued holiday quarter after a US jobs report bolstered hopes of a pause in interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

The stock was down 1.5 percent in early trading, having fallen more than 3 percent before the bell. The world’s most valuable firm was on course to lose $40 billion (nearly Rs. 3,32,630 crore) in market value, if the losses hold.

The iPhone maker on Thursday forecast sales for the holiday quarter, usually its biggest, below Wall Street estimates, blaming weak demand for iPads and wearables.

The projection fanned fears about broader holiday demand, with estimates including those from the US National Retail Federation and Deloitte predicting the slowest rise in sales in the crucial shopping period in years due to sticky inflation.

“Apple’s revenue growth has stalled over the past few quarters — and appears likely to continue to stagnate over the next year,” said brokerage Bernstein, noting the holiday quarter usually sets the tone for Apple’s fiscal year that runs until September.

The stock, however, found some support after data showed that nonfarm payrolls rose less than expected in October, lifting shares across the board on expectations that the Fed could end its rate-tightening cycle.

At least 14 analysts cut their price targets on Apple, pushing down the median price target to $195, according to LSEG data. Apple currently trades at nearly 26 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, among the lowest in the so-called “Magnificent Seven” stocks.

“We view management’s flat sales guidance as proof the company cannot rely on iPhone sales to drive shares higher, as it has in the past,” DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte said.

The iPhone, Apple’s main revenue generator, saw its sales rise in the September quarter and is also forecast to post an increase in the last three months of 2023.

CEO Tim Cook also insisted the iPhone 15 models were doing well in China, as he sought to allay Wall Street fears that Apple was losing market share to a resurgent Huawei and other local smartphone sellers. “In mainland China, we set a quarterly record for the September quarter for iPhone,” Cook told Reuters.

Several analysts cheered the remarks. “The Street will breathe a sigh of relief on this front,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said.

iPhone Sales Help Apple Beat Q4 Estimates, Holiday Forecast Disappoints Amid Weak iPad, Wearables Demand

Apple on Thursday gave a sales forecast for the holiday quarter that missed Wall Street expectations, hurt by weak demand for iPads and wearables, sending its shares down about 3 percent in after-hours trading. Chief Executive Tim Cook insisted that the company’s new iPhone 15 models were doing well in China, seeking to ease Wall Street worries that Apple was losing market share to a resurgent Huawei and other local smartphone sellers. Apple’s revenue from China dipped 2.5 percent overall in the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 30, though Cook said it grew after accounting for foreign-exchange rates.

Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told analysts on a conference call that sales for the current quarter, which includes the Christmas holidays and when Apple typically has its biggest sales of new iPhone models, will be similar to the previous year. Wall Street had expected a forecast for a rise in sales of 4.97 percent to $122.98 billion (roughly Rs. 10,23,790 crore).

Apple shares, which have risen 37 percent so far this year, dropped 3.4 percent after-hours, following the forecast.

Maestri said Apple expects to have higher iPhone sales for the fiscal first quarter, even though this year’s holiday quarter has one fewer week of sales than the year-ago.

“I’d say it was surprising to see how confident Tim Cook was on future China performance given the many potential geopolitical challenges that we know exist for that market,” said Bob O’Donnell, chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research.

Apple on Thursday reported sales and profit for the fiscal fourth quarter that beat Wall Street expectations, helped by an uptick in iPhone sales and a $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,325 crore) boost to services revenue that offset large drops in Mac and iPad sales.

Cook said the company’s new high-end handset models – the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices – are facing supply constraints.

The Cupertino, California-based company has navigated a global smartphone slump better than many of its rivals, but faces an uneven economic recovery in China, a key market.

“While we believe investors should breathe a sigh of relief because sales and profits both exceeded expectations, the upside was small and we were concerned to see weak sales from China,” DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte said.

Apple said sales for the most recent quarter fell roughly 1 percent to $89.50 billion (about Rs. 7,45,130 crore), but beat analyst estimates of $89.28 billion (about Rs. 7,43,307 crore), according to LSEG data. Net income rose about 11 percent. Profit per share of $1.46 beat analyst expectations of $1.39 per share, according to LSEG.

Apple is facing tougher competition in the smartphone market this year as Huawei Technologies returns to the field with new phones powered by Chinese-made chips after being all but shut out of the market for several years by US government trade curbs.

Apple’s sales in China fell to $15.08 billion (roughly Rs. 1,25,544 crore) from $15.47 billion (roughly Rs. 1,28,791 crore)in the fourth quarter a year ago. Cook said that after accounting for foreign-exchange rates, Apple’s business in China grew year-over-year, driven by iPhone sales and services revenue.

“In mainland China, we set a quarterly record for the September quarter for iPhone,” Cook told Reuters. “We had four out of the top five best-selling smartphones in urban China.”

Cook said Apple was “working hard to manufacture more” iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices. “We do believe that later this quarter, we’ll reach a supply-demand balance.”

For now, the iPhone remains Apple’s biggest seller. Sales were $43.81 billion (roughly Rs. 3,64,732 crore) in the fourth quarter, in line with analyst expectations, according to LSEG data.

“We expect its performance to further improve in (Apple’s fiscal first quarter) as the supply issues of the top Pro and Pro Max models will be resolved by then,” said IDC analyst Nabila Popal. “Demand across regions continues to show preference for the most premium models, and we expect an even larger proportion” of those models this year than last year, she said.

The personal computer market is also expected to fare better in the coming year. Earlier this week, Apple rolled out new Mac machines.

Still, Mac sales slumped by a third to $7.61 billion (roughly Rs. 63,355 crore) and iPad sales declined 10 percent to $6.44 billion (roughly Rs. 53,615 crore), compared with expectations of $8.63 billion (roughly Rs. 71,847 crore) and $6.07 billion (roughly Rs. 50,534 crore), respectively.

Sales in Apple’s wearables segment, which includes the Apple Watch and AirPods, fell 3 percent to $9.32 billion (roughly Rs. 77,591 crore), short of estimates of $9.43 billion (roughly Rs. 78,507 crore), according to LSEG data.

Apple has faced several quarters of declining sales of Macs and iPads, and the fourth quarter continued that trend.

Sales in Apple’s services segment, which includes Apple TV+ and which recently closed a deal with global soccer superstar Lionel Messi, rose 16 percent to $22.31 billion (roughly Rs. 1,85,748 crore), compared with analyst estimates of $21.35 billion (roughly Rs. 1,77,755 crore).

Apple Sends Invite For “Scary Fast” Event; New iMacs, MacBooks Expected

Apple has sent out invites for the “Scary Fast” event, expected to be the iMacs and MacBooks launch, which is scheduled to take place at the end of this month. According to the invite received by Gadgets360 on Tuesday, the California-based tech giant will hold the special Apple Event on October 30 at 5 pm PT. The live streaming of the event will also be available on the company’s official website at apple.com. According to a previous report, Apple is expected to launch a follow-up model for the 24-inch iMac at this upcoming event.

On Tuesday, October 24, Apple began sending out fresh invites for an upcoming event. While the company has not mentioned the specifications of the event, it is expected to be a Mac Launch event. The lineup for the event hasn’t been revealed by the company yet. The event is scheduled at 5 pm PT, which means 5:30 am on October 31, a very odd time for an Apple event, keeping India in mind. The event will be available for live streaming at Apple.com and YouTube.

Apple has not refreshed its 2021 24-inch iMac yet. In a previous report based on Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman newsletter, Apple will launch a new 24-inch iMac refresh at the upcoming event. He also added that a larger Pro version of the iMac will arrive in late 2024 or 2025. However, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said that the new 24-inch iMac will be launched in the coming year.

The previous 24-inch iMac is powered by the M1 chip. It is available in seven colour options to buy from and sports a 4.5K retina display with 500 nits of peak brightness. Meanwhile, another previous report citing Gurman said that the new Mac products could debut with Apple’s latest M3 chip.

The report by Gurman also stated that Apple has no plans to launch new iPad models this year. The company could launch new iPad models around March 2024.

Apple to Debut iMac Refresh at the End of the Month, New iPad Models to Arrive in March 2024: Gurman

Apple is yet to refresh its 2021 24-inch iMac, with the company widely speculated to be working on the follow-up. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said last week that he expected the Cupertino, California-based company to unveil a new 24-inch iMac next year. A new report, however, contradicts Kuo and says that Apple is set to launch a follow-up model for the 24-inch iMac by the end of this month. The report also claims that the company plans to launch new iPad models next year.

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple is gearing up to launch the long-awaited 24-inch iMac refresh around the end of October. The company is reportedly planning a Mac-centred launch for the end of this month, where it could announce the new model. “I believe the Mac announcement will take place on either the 30th or 31st of this month,” Gurman specified in his newsletter. Gurman also pointed out that Apple retail stores were in short supply of the existing iMac, hinting at a refreshed model arriving soon.

Gurman also added that a larger Pro version of the iMac will arrive in late 2024 or 2025. The iMac Pro will reportedly become the biggest iMac Apple has ever released, sporting a 32-inch screen. Gurman’s reporting also aligns with Kuo’s claim, which said that a higher-end iMac with a 32-inch mini-LED display would debut in 2025.

Additionally, Gurman also said that Apple has no plans to launch new iPad models this year. After several rumours about an impending iPad launch, Apple debuted the Apple Pencil (2023) last week as a cheaper alternative to the second-generation product. Gurman claims that the company plans to launch new iPad models around March 2024. The company is reportedly working on refreshes for iPad Air, the entry-level iPad, and iPad mini. Gurman states that a new iPad Pro is also in Apple’s plans further down the pipeline.

Apple is yet to refresh the iMac in over two years since the company introduced the M1-powered 24-inch iMac in candy colours at its ‘Spring Loaded’ event in April. The 24-inch iMac is powered by the M1 chip and is available in seven colours. The iMac is 11.5mm thin and features a 4.5K retina display with 500 nits of peak brightness.

Apple has also not refreshed its iPad lineup this year, with its last iPad launch taking place in October 2022, when it debuted new iPad Pro models powered by the M2 chip and a new 10th Gen iPad sporting a new design and a new keyboard accessory.

Apple to Debut Apple Pencil 3 With Replaceable Tips This Week Instead of Refreshed iPad Models: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil new models of its iPad lineup this week, with the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini said to be getting refreshed. The new iPad models could get updated chipsets, with the new iPad Air likely to come with an M2 chip. According to a new report, however, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant seems to be gearing up to launch a new Apple Pencil instead. Apple is believed to be close to launching the Apple Pencil 3. The iPhone maker currently sells the first and second generations of Apple Pencil, compatible with its iPad models.

According to a report in Japanese outlet MacOtakara, Apple will likely launch the third-generation Apple Pencil this week. The Apple Pencil 3 will reportedly come with replaceable magnetic tips. The same was confirmed by tipster Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter), as well. “Based on what my source reported the new Apple Pencil 3 will come with interchangeable magnetic tips (for drawing, technical drawing and painting),” the tipster said in their post.

Apple has not officially announced plans to launch iPad refreshes, Apple Pencil or any other devices. Several reports, however, have said that the company is likely to bring new iPad models this week. A report from Supercharged claimed that the iPad Air model could be refreshed with an M2 chip, while the iPad mini, which currently runs on Apple’s A15 Bionic, could get the A16 Bionic SoC.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, however, said in his weekly newsletter that while Apple was working on new iPad models, a launch this week was unlikely. If the new report is to be believed, however, the Apple Pencil 3 could soon be on its way.

Earlier this year, Apple reportedly filed a patent for an optical sensor on its next-generation Apple Pencil that could allow the device to copy the texture and the colour from the surface of an item.

Apple currently sells the second-generation Apple Pencil at Rs. 11,900. The Apple Pencil 2 features wireless pairing and charging and attaches magnetically to your iPad device. It is compatible with iPad Pro models, iPad Air, and iPad mini. The first-generation Apple Pencil, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 9,500 and pairs and charges via a lightening connector on top.

Procreate Dreams Animation App for Apple iPad Coming November 22 This Year

Procreate Dreams, a brand new animation app for Apple iPad is all set to land on the Apple App Store on November 22 this year. Created by the same company that made Procreate, a highly popular paid image editing app for the iPad, Procreate Dreams promises greater flexibility and ease of use for creating 2D animations and videos, for both beginners and professional artists. Procreate Dreams will be released on November 22 and will be available globally for $19.99 (roughly Rs. 1,670) as a one-time purchase.

Procreate Dreams promises users the ability to animate through touch and instantly respond to the movie as it plays, without needing to set up keyframes and paths. New tools such as ‘Performing’ uses gestures to automatically add keyframes as it records the animator’s actions in real time. The app’s painting and compositing engine is said to “supercharge” an artist’s work by offering hundreds of Procreate brushes in a new painting engine, on even bigger canvases, and with more layers to play with.

The Procreate Dreams timeline allows mixing of drawing, cel animation, keyframing, video editing, and compositing. The timeline’s Playhead allows you to move around the timeline, add actions precisely, and flick back to instantly play the movie. You can use the Apple Pencil to quickly select content, tracks, or keyframes, then edit them all at once. The app also features GPU acceleration built on Metal for smoother performance.

Other features include Flipbook, a refined homage to traditional animation, that is said to be useful for creating short looping GIFs, complex character animation, and more. Meanwhile, Live Motion and Filters provide a non-destructive workflow; after adding keyframes they remain fully editable. Procreate Dreams is said to be able to run effortlessly with hundreds of tracks, millions of pixels, and more layers.

Last but not least, there’s a new Procreate file format, which allows for even a 1TB file to be opened in an instant, with no loading, saving or export times. There’s even support for iCloud synchronisation, file management and backups. Eternal undo history is now saved in the file, which should let creators experiment and play without the risk of losing their work.

Apple Granted Patent That Could Allow for Truly ‘Matte Black’ iPhone, MacBook, Apple Watch Models: Details

iPhone and MacBook models could arrive in new matte black colour options in the future, as the Cupertino company was granted a patent that could allow the company to produce a dark version of its smartphone, laptops, tablets, and smartwatches, according to details shared in the patent document issued by the US Patent Office (USPTO) on Tuesday. While original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Apple have launched devices with matte finishes in the past, creating one with a dark colour — such as black — has proved to be challenging.

US patent 11751349-B2, titled “Anodised part having a matte black appearance” was granted to Apple on Tuesday and the USPTO credits James Curran, Aaron Paterson, and Sonja Postak as the inventors of the technology. The document that was published by the patent office also reveals that Apple filed the application for the patent in May 2020.

Apple’s latest patent refers to the use of an anodised part that comprises both a metal substrate and an anodised layer that is created from the metal substrate. The company has designed the anodised layer to utilise light-absorbing features that are located at varying locations and can absorb light that falls on the surface of the device’s enclosure. Apple details plans to etch the surface of an anodised part to create these light-absorbing features.

In order to impart colour to the anodised layer, Apple describes the use of “pores” on the surface that have particles of colour infused in them. The patent document claims the anodised layer will have a CIELAB L* value that is lower than 10. This means that the appearance of the product’s surface would be nearly black, but with a matte finish.

Figures 6A, 6B, 7A, and 7B depict the etched anodised part under an electron microscope

Many manufacturers have tried to create devices with a matte finish that is nearly black in colour, but most efforts have failed — anodised metal that is black in colour appears glossy and reflects large amounts of light instead of absorbing it. Apple has provided details of how the company managed to create a truly black device with a metal finish in the patent document.

Recent reports suggest that Apple could be working on products such as a smart ring that can provide haptic feedback and pressure-sensitive input. Similarly, a recent patent application hints at work on AirPods sensors that allow Apple’s wireless earphones to measure brain electrical activity. Apple was also recently granted a second patent that points to the possible addition of Face ID support on future MacBook and Mac computers.

Apple’s Magic Keyboard Revamp to Make New iPad Pro More Laptop-Like: Mark Gurman

Apple has reportedly been working on remodelling its iPad Pro accessories including the Magic Keyboard, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Meanwhile, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to introduce two new iPad Pro versions in 2024 featuring the yet-unreleased M3 chip and OLED screens. The company has also previously been tipped to be working on an updated model of its Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro accessory. iPad Pro is likely to see the first major hardware upgrade in six years.

In his Power On newsletter dated September 3, Mark Gurman noted that Apple is working on a new Magic Keyboard that will debut next year along with the company’s new iPad Pro models. The upcoming keyboard accessory will reportedly have a larger trackpad to make it more Mac-like, but Gurman added that the overhaul will be even more thorough. The top case, or the region surrounding the keyboard itself, will be aluminium for the first time on a Magic Keyboard for iPad, to match current Mac laptops.

According to Gurman, the weight difference from changing to aluminium will be insignificant. If Apple decides to employ more expensive materials, the cost of the accessory may increase. Currently, the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 11-inch costs Rs. 29,999, while the same for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro costs Rs. 33,900.

Gurman notes that the updated Magic Keyboard for iPad will be launched alongside the 2024 iPad Pro, which is expected to feature 11-inch and 13-inch OLED displays and could be announced in the second half of the year. Apple is likely to introduce newer iPad Air or the iPad mini models before launching the next iPad Pro model, Gurman stated in his report from last week.

Upcoming iPad Pro models, internally codenamed J717, J718, J720, and J721, are likely to be powered by purported 3nm M3 chipset, which could provide better performance and efficiency as opposed to the 4nm M2 SoCs found in its current-generation MacBook, iPad, and Mac models.

London Court Dismisses Apple’s Appeal in Dispute With Optis, Says iPhone and iPad Models Infringed 4G Patents

Apple infringed two telecommunications patents used in devices including iPhones and iPads, London’s Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, dismissing the tech giant’s appeal in a long-running dispute with a US patent holder.

Texas-based Optis Cellular Technology sued Apple in 2019 over its use of patents which Optis says are essential to certain technological standards, such as 4G.

London’s High Court ruled last year that two of Optis’ 4G patents were so-called standard essential patents and that Apple had infringed them.

Apple appealed against that decision in May, arguing that the two patents in issue were not essential to 4G standards and that it had not infringed the patents.

But its challenge was rejected by the Court of Appeal, with Judge Colin Birss saying in a written ruling that the High Court was “right to reject (Apple’s) argument for non-infringement” and on the issue of the patents being essential.

Apple and Optis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tuesday’s ruling is the latest decision in the legal battle between Apple and Optis, which began in 2019 and has prompted six separate trials and several appellate hearings in Britain alone.

The Court of Appeal last month upheld an appeal by Optis against an earlier decision to revoke two other 4G-related patents, following a ruling in October that Optis is entitled to an injunction to stop Apple infringing its patents before a court has ruled on the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms of use.

Apple was granted permission earlier this year to appeal against the October ruling.
