Apple Likely to Report 4 Percent Drop in Quarterly Revenue Despite Recovery in China

Apple will likely report a more than 4 percent drop in revenue, its second straight quarterly decline, weighed down by consumers shunning non-essential purchases such as iPhones and Mac computers and slowing growth at its services business.

The results on Thursday from the world’s most valuable company will follow better-than-expected earnings from U.S. technology peers, which had raised hopes that the worst may be over for a sector that has laid off tens of thousands this year.

Apple, an industry outlier with no mass layoffs so far, is set to post its first ever revenue declines across product lines, even as iPhone demand and production recovered in China after pandemic-driven disruptions last year.

“Apple is seeing moderate headwinds in its hardware businesses as iPhones face modest contraction in premium device demand and the iPad and Mac businesses could be weighed down by consumer and enterprise trends,” analysts at Cowen said.

Hardware sales are set to decline over 7 percent to $71.93 billion (roughly Rs. 1,41,500 crore) in the second quarter, according to 23 analysts polled by Visible Alpha.

Mac sales, which account for nearly a tenth of Apple’s revenue, likely fell by a quarter, while revenue from flagship iPhone is estimated to have declined by over 3 percent.

Global PC shipments slumped by nearly a third between January and March, according to data from research firm IDC, led by an over 40 percent drop in those sold by Apple. The global smartphone market, meanwhile, shrank 13 percent for a fifth straight quarter of decline.

China Cheer

Apple investors, however, would be encouraged by a recovery in China, the company’s third-largest market.

“The reopening of China, both from the supply chain and the consumer demand standpoint, works in Apple’s favor,” said Tom Forte of D.A. Davidson, who expects iPhone sales there to rise.

A near 1 percent pullback in the dollar during the quarter is also a bright spot in what is typically a weak period following the holiday shopping season, analysts said.

Revenue in its services business, a key growth engine for Apple and home to its App Store and video streaming service, likely rose about 6 percent, according to Visible Alpha. That would mark its second lowest growth rate since at least the first quarter of fiscal 2017.

“For Apple, it is much more about a user growth story than a unit growth story,” said KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Brandon Nispel, who believes efforts to grow market share in developing economies such as India and Brazil will be crucial.

He expects Apple to have added 30 million users to its active installed user base – the number of active Apple devices in the world. That figure stood at 2 billion as of end December.

The company is ramping up its manufacturing and store presence in India as it looks to diversify its supply chain and gain consumers. The market could contribute $20 billion (roughly Rs. 1,63,600 crore) to annual revenue by 2025, brokerage Wedbush estimates.

iOS 15.7.5 Update with Security Patches Reportedly Released for Older iPhone, iPad; All Details

Apple, that lays an imperative focus on securing its ecosystem with a bundle of privacy features, is reportedly rolling out a fresh software upgrade for older iPhone and iPad models. The iOS 15.7.5 update is being released to fix points of vulnerabilities in the core tech system of the devices. Apple has reportedly hinted that these vulnerabilities may have been exploited in the past, but this update would fix that right up.

The release of iOS 15.7.5 comes just one week after Apple deployed the 15.7.4 updated. Both of these updates are loaded with security patches. The latest update focuses on securing the IOSurfaceAccelerator as well as its WebKit vulnerabilities in older iPhone and iPad models. As per a report by 9To5Mac, these patches will prevent arbitrary code executions by maliciously designed web content and apps.

Tech tipster Aaron Zollo with over 100,000 Twitter followers, shared an image of this upgrade being rolled out on the micro-blogging platform.

Apple devices including all models of iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone SE, iPad Air 2, iPad mini (4th generation), and iPod touch (7th generation) are eligible to get this update.

The company recommends that users download and install this update immediately.

According to DemandSage, the iPhone has clocked over 1.5 billion users around the world as of 2023. Apple’s total net sales reached $394.33 billion in 2022, recording a 2.44 percent YoY increase from 2021.

In order to maintain its hefty sales figures, the tech giant keeps its device lineup up to date. At the moment, Apple is also rolling out the macOS Big Sur 11.7.6 (20G1231) as well as macOS Monterey 12.6.5 (21G531) for its laptops, the 9To5Mac report added.

The company is also looking to expand its retail presence in different parts of the world. In India, for instance, Apple is inaugurating its first two Apple Stores in Mumbai and Delhi later this month.

Apple customers in India can experience the latest Apple product lineup and avail of personalised service and support from the new stores.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone, iPad Could Protect Its Display From Drops, New Patent Suggests

Apple could join the fray of Samsung, Oppo, and Motorola by launching a foldable smartphone around 2025. Ahead of it, the Cupertino giant has filed a patent for a new technology that would protect iPhone and iPad models with flexible screens from getting damaged even when dropped from a height. With this latest technology, devices would be able to detect while they’re falling and immediately fold up on the way to the ground to minimize damages. As per the patent, folding the display to an angle less the 180 degrees can afford some protection for the devices.

As initially spotted by Patently Apple, Apple has filed for a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that indicates new safety features for the screens of iPhone and iPad units. The patent titled “Self-Retracting Display Device And Techniques For Protecting Screen Using Drop Detection” refers to a motorised folding device mechanism that could partially or fully close a foldable device, prior to hitting the ground in a drop event to protect its display.

The foldable displays and rollable displays made with ultra-thin glass can be vulnerable to falls and the proposed technology would be advantageous to control the damages by closing the device to protect its display.

“Mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use a sensor to detect vertical acceleration (e.g., acceleration with respect to the ground) to determine if the mobile device has been dropped,” said the patent application. “If the sensor detects that the mobile device has been dropped… the foldable device can retract at least partially to afford protection from the fragile display from striking the ground” it added.

As per the patent application, folding the display to an angle less the 180 degrees can also even afford some protection. “The electronic device can include a release mechanism operating with the roller to automatically retract the foldable display on the roller when the detected vertical acceleration exceeds a predetermined acceleration threshold” it added.

In addition to the detailed description of the new technology, the listing on the USPTO website includes some schematics to suggest how the modifications would work.

Apple has not revealed any details about the new patent or release of an iPhone or iPad with a foldable display. The patented technologies may just be used for prototyping. So, all these details should be considered with a pinch of salt.

Apple Rolls Out Software Updates With Critical Security Fixes for Older iPhone, iPad, MacBook Models

Apple has begun rolling out iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates for older iPhone, iPad, and MacBook models. The updates address some critical security issues that needed immediate fixes for users whose devices are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, and macOS Ventura updates for iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, widely released on a stable channel recently. The company notes a list of 14 different critical security and system vulnerabilities that have been addressed with the latest software updates for older Apple devices.

The Cupertino, California-based technology giant has released a total of five software updates for older Apple devices. This includes iOS 12.5.7, iOS 15.7.3, iPadOS 15.7.3, macOS Big Sur 11.7.3, macOS Monterey 12.6.3.

iPhone models older than the iPhone 8 are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3 update, hence leaving them critically vulnerable to security threats. iOS 12.5.7 and iPadOS 12.5.7 fixes these issues on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation) devices, Apple confirmed in its security bulletin. The iOS update for older devices addresses a critical WebKit Bugzilla vulnerability with tracking number CVE-2022-42856, which was unearthed by Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The vulnerability was being exploited by malicious phishing attackers to remotely access devices, run unauthorized commands or code, additional malware, or spyware.

Other WebKit confusion-related security vulnerabilities addressed in the latest OS updates for macOS include AppleMobileFileIntegrity, curl, dcerpc, DiskArbitration, DriverKit, Intel Graphics Driver, PackageKit, Kernel, Mail Exchange, Maps, Screen Time, Weather, WebKit, and Windows Installer.

With such critical vulnerabilities, users are advised to get their device updates as soon as possible in order to protect themselves from malicious attacks. Users who own iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPod touch (6th generation), or devices running on macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, are advised to install the latest security updates by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3 Update Rolling Out With End-to-End iCloud Encryption, Security Keys Support: Details

iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 updates have begun rolling out for eligible iPhone and iPad models. The stable updates to iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3 come 4 months after the first iOS 16 update was released by the Cupertino, California-based tech giant. Apple’s recent smartphones will now support Advanced Data Protection, which adds support for end-to-end encryption on iCloud. The update also adds support for security keys, which means Apple devices now support physical security keys for two-factor authentication. The update also brings other bug fixes, performance enhancements, and introduces support for Apple HomePod (2nd Gen) on supported iPhone models.

According to Apple’s changelog announcing the stable iOS 16.3 update, users on iPhone 8 and newer models can now enable Advanced Data Protection on their iCloud accounts, which will protect data from apps like Messages, Photos, and Safari. Meanwhile, the latest iOS 16.3, and iPadOS 16.3 updates also introduce support for the use of physical security keys for two-factor authentication while signing into an Apple ID, for added security.

As part of the latest iOS 16.3, Apple has also introduced support for the new HomePod (2nd Gen) that allows for easy pairing, and music transfer between iPhone devices and the Apple HomePod (2nd Gen).

Meanwhile, the Emergency SOS call mechanism has also been updated on iOS 16.3, with the user now required to release their hold on the power and volume toggle buttons to trigger an emergency SOS call. The update also fixes an issue with the FreeForm app where drawing strokes created with Apple Pencil or hand were not appearing on shared boards.

The update also fixes bugs that caused lock screen blackouts, horizontal lines on waking up iPhone 14 Pro Max, the Home lock screen widget not displaying the Home app status correctly, and Siri not responding to music requests, according to the company.

Apple has also introduced a new Unity wallpaper that the company had announced earlier as part of its celebration for Black History Month in the US in February, as part of the iOS 16.3 update.

iPhone, iPad Bug Caused Safari to Crash When Typing Certain Letters: Report

iPhone and iPad users were reportedly facing a bizarre bug that was crashing the Safari browser while trying to search for certain words. The app was supposedly crashing as users entered the first three letters of certain words. The issue seemed to have affected Apple devices running on different versions of iOS 16. In addition, there have been reports of iOS 15 users also experiencing this bug. The exact cause for this error is unknown, however, several users are now claiming that this error has been fixed.

According to a report by MacRumours, several iPhone and iPad users have started experiencing a bug that would crash the Safari app when trying to search for certain terms. The issue had supposedly appeared overnight for several Apple devices running on iOS 15.7.1, ‌iOS 16‌, iOS 16.1, iOS 16.1.1, and the iOS 16.2 beta.

The Safari app was said to be crashing whenever users tried to type tar, bes, wal, wel, old, sta, pla, and a few other phrases in the search bar. The bug seemingly prevented users from going beyond the first three letters of a word. Apple users had pointed out that turning off Safari Suggestions in the app settings would prevent the bug from surfacing.

It is believed to be a server-side bug that Apple has purportedly fixed without having to roll out an iOS update.

In related news, Apple recently released the iOS 16.1.1 update with several bug fixes and improvements that were not mentioned in the change logs. However, the update is said to have resolved a Wi-Fi connectivity issue faced by iOS 16 users. This update is available for iPhone 8 and later models. The Cupertino company also began rolling out the iPadOS 16.1.1 and macOS Ventura 13.0.1 updates at the same time.

Synchron Switch Now Lets You Control Your iPhone or iPad Using Brain: All Details

New York-based company Synchron is working on a brain-computer interface (BCI) technology with the goal of enabling patients to control digital devices hands-free. It has created a device named ‘Synchron Switch’ for converting the thoughts of people with paralysis into action. It lets patients control an iPhone or iPad using their brains. With this technology, an array of sensors called Stentrode is inserted into the top of the brain via a blood vessel and is controlled wirelessly using the Synchron Switch from the patient’s chest. The company foots the cost of implanting and maintaining the device. Synchron is the first company to gain approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to run clinical trials on a computer-brain implant.

As per a report by Semafor, Synchron Switch is being used by six patients. Rodney Gorham, a retired software salesman in Australia, is the first ever to use it with an Apple product. Gorham suffers from ALS and he had the device surgically implanted in his brain at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

As mentioned, Stentrode is implanted into the top of the brain via a blood vessel and it is controlled wirelessly using the Synchron Switch from the patient’s chest. Synchron reportedly pays up the cost of inserting and maintaining the device. The company trains Synchron Switch to recognise the brain signal for a foot tap. The report states that Gorham can control his iPad with his Synchron Switch and can send single-word text messages.

Tom Oxley, Synchron’s co-founder and CEO said that this would be the first brain switch input into the device. Oxley said the skills needed to implant the Stentrode are commonplace, adding that implanting a device directly on the brain would require neurosurgery.

If FDA approves the device for widespread use, Oxley believes that technology like Stentrode will benefit people with disabilities.

Synchron, founded in 2016, is a popular name in the brain-computer interface (BCI) field. As per Pitchbook data, it has around 60 employees and has raised about $65 million (roughly Rs. 538 crore) so far from investors. It received FDA clearance for human trials in 2021 and has completed studies on four people in Australia. Many startups are working to embed devices in skulls, similar to Synchron. Inner Cosmos, Epiminder, and Elon Musk’s Neuralink are the key players in space. Neuralink is yet to receive FDA permission for its implant.
