Apple is all set to host its next hardware event “Let Loose” next month. This will be the company’s first major launch event in 2024 and it will be livestreamed via the company’s official channels. Exact details about what Apple is unveiling in the event are yet to be officially announced, but we expect the Cupertino firm to introduce new upgraded iPad Pro and iPad Air models alongside a new Apple Pencil. The next generation iPad Pro models are expected to come with an M3 chip and feature OLED screens for the first time.

Apple dropped an invite for its virtual launch event on Tuesday (April 23). The event is scheduled to take place at 7am PT (7:30pm IST) on May 7 and the show will be livestreamed via its official website and Apple TV app.

The event poster is seen with the tagline: “Let Loose”. It shows a drawing of a hand holding an Apple Pencil suggesting that iPad will be the key focus of the event.

Apple is expected to release new iPad Air and iPad Pro models in the upcoming event. The iPad Pro models are anticipated to come with OLED displays and an M3 chip. They are tipped to get thinner bezels and available in “glossy and matte screen versions” and could offer MagSafe wireless charging support. They could feature a revamped rear camera module and a landscape-oriented front camera.

The iPad Air is said to run on an M2 chip and could be offered in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes. The company could also unveil an updated Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil with a new squeeze gesture feature alongside the new tablets.

Apple’s May product launch event will take place a month ahead of its software-focused Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is scheduled to kick off on June 10.

Apple to Debut iMac Refresh at the End of the Month, New iPad Models to Arrive in March 2024: Gurman

Apple is yet to refresh its 2021 24-inch iMac, with the company widely speculated to be working on the follow-up. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said last week that he expected the Cupertino, California-based company to unveil a new 24-inch iMac next year. A new report, however, contradicts Kuo and says that Apple is set to launch a follow-up model for the 24-inch iMac by the end of this month. The report also claims that the company plans to launch new iPad models next year.

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple is gearing up to launch the long-awaited 24-inch iMac refresh around the end of October. The company is reportedly planning a Mac-centred launch for the end of this month, where it could announce the new model. “I believe the Mac announcement will take place on either the 30th or 31st of this month,” Gurman specified in his newsletter. Gurman also pointed out that Apple retail stores were in short supply of the existing iMac, hinting at a refreshed model arriving soon.

Gurman also added that a larger Pro version of the iMac will arrive in late 2024 or 2025. The iMac Pro will reportedly become the biggest iMac Apple has ever released, sporting a 32-inch screen. Gurman’s reporting also aligns with Kuo’s claim, which said that a higher-end iMac with a 32-inch mini-LED display would debut in 2025.

Additionally, Gurman also said that Apple has no plans to launch new iPad models this year. After several rumours about an impending iPad launch, Apple debuted the Apple Pencil (2023) last week as a cheaper alternative to the second-generation product. Gurman claims that the company plans to launch new iPad models around March 2024. The company is reportedly working on refreshes for iPad Air, the entry-level iPad, and iPad mini. Gurman states that a new iPad Pro is also in Apple’s plans further down the pipeline.

Apple is yet to refresh the iMac in over two years since the company introduced the M1-powered 24-inch iMac in candy colours at its ‘Spring Loaded’ event in April. The 24-inch iMac is powered by the M1 chip and is available in seven colours. The iMac is 11.5mm thin and features a 4.5K retina display with 500 nits of peak brightness.

Apple has also not refreshed its iPad lineup this year, with its last iPad launch taking place in October 2022, when it debuted new iPad Pro models powered by the M2 chip and a new 10th Gen iPad sporting a new design and a new keyboard accessory.

Apple to Debut Apple Pencil 3 With Replaceable Tips This Week Instead of Refreshed iPad Models: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil new models of its iPad lineup this week, with the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini said to be getting refreshed. The new iPad models could get updated chipsets, with the new iPad Air likely to come with an M2 chip. According to a new report, however, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant seems to be gearing up to launch a new Apple Pencil instead. Apple is believed to be close to launching the Apple Pencil 3. The iPhone maker currently sells the first and second generations of Apple Pencil, compatible with its iPad models.

According to a report in Japanese outlet MacOtakara, Apple will likely launch the third-generation Apple Pencil this week. The Apple Pencil 3 will reportedly come with replaceable magnetic tips. The same was confirmed by tipster Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter), as well. “Based on what my source reported the new Apple Pencil 3 will come with interchangeable magnetic tips (for drawing, technical drawing and painting),” the tipster said in their post.

Apple has not officially announced plans to launch iPad refreshes, Apple Pencil or any other devices. Several reports, however, have said that the company is likely to bring new iPad models this week. A report from Supercharged claimed that the iPad Air model could be refreshed with an M2 chip, while the iPad mini, which currently runs on Apple’s A15 Bionic, could get the A16 Bionic SoC.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, however, said in his weekly newsletter that while Apple was working on new iPad models, a launch this week was unlikely. If the new report is to be believed, however, the Apple Pencil 3 could soon be on its way.

Earlier this year, Apple reportedly filed a patent for an optical sensor on its next-generation Apple Pencil that could allow the device to copy the texture and the colour from the surface of an item.

Apple currently sells the second-generation Apple Pencil at Rs. 11,900. The Apple Pencil 2 features wireless pairing and charging and attaches magnetically to your iPad device. It is compatible with iPad Pro models, iPad Air, and iPad mini. The first-generation Apple Pencil, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 9,500 and pairs and charges via a lightening connector on top.

Apple May Have Shelved Plans to Launch Affordable Pencil: Report

Apple was reportedly working to offer an affordable pencil, codenamed Marker, to its users. However, the development has now been said to be shelved as the Cupertino-based tech giant has cancelled all plans to release the Apple pencil, despite reportedly gearing up for a September 2023 launch at the iPhone maker’s biggest annual event. The suggested Apple pencil could have come with a USB Type-C charging port, along with a lightning cable. The company has not made any announcements about such product yet.

According to a post on Chinese website Weibo, first spotted, Apple was working to launch an affordable Apple Pencil, which featured iPhone compatibility while also supporting charging via USB type-C port. Meanwhile, the current Apple Pencil is charged via a lightning cable where as the company’s affordable iPad Wi-Fi now uses USB type-C port, making iPad invest an extra $9 (roughly Rs. 750) to buy an extra dongle.

Unfortunately, Apple has reportedly cancelled all plans to launch the product, which was said to be launched next year. According to the report, Apple’s planned $50 (roughly Rs. 4,100) version of the Apple Pencil was codenamed Marker. The affordable Apple Pencil apparently could have cut corners by removing features like pressure-sensing technology and an in-built battery, according to the report. The iPhone maker chose to develop a chip that would be used to power the stylus through the connected screen, similar to the technology seen on Samsung’s S-Pen models.

However, Apple has not made any official announcements about the launch or shelving of the affordable Apple Pencil yet and we may have to wait until the September event next year to know if these rumours are true or not.

Apple was previously spotted applying for a revamped patent that would support an Apple Pencil mounted above the MacBook keyboard. The claims include the ability to magnetically retain or secure the Pencil when it is placed in the storage area and use the pencil as a function key while housed in the chassis. The patent, which the iPhone and Macbook maker first applied for during the last year, imagines the Pencil as a replacement for the function keys row.

According to another report by Patently Apple, the Cupertino,California-based company may have added 20 new patent claims around the stylus. The patent explains that the input tool could be stored in a recess of the keyboard housing or the chassis.
