41 and taking control of my health

Approaching 42 is a wake-up call. No longer am I “only 39 again” or “just over 40.” I am officially “over the hill,” as they say.

Listen, I don’t feel bad; I feel pretty healthy. However, I know I can feel better. Not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well.

As I go into the new year, soon to be my 42nd, I want to be proactive about my health and avoid what some may say are inevitable problems down the road.

Enter Lifeforce, the proactive healthcare company, co-founded by Dr. Peter Diamandis and renowned author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Its data-driven and personalized approach to health resonated with me, so I wanted to give it a try.

Before I dive deep into the details, I will dismiss what I bet you’re thinking: This is not another online weight loss program. It is, in fact, so much more.

From Average to Optimized: Starting with Lifeforce

Barret Wertz

Lifeforce takes a proactive stance on health, unlike many other healthcare programs I’ve researched. It doesn’t treat symptoms after they appear but focuses on early prevention through comprehensive biomarker testing and planning for the future with the body you have now.

This in-depth analysis examines over 40 essential biomarkers, including hormone balance, nutrient levels, metabolic function, and organ health, providing a detailed snapshot of your current health status.

Before Lifeforce, I was just going about my business, not minding my health beyond eating healthy food and ensuring I got in 30 minutes of elevated heart rate a couple of times per week. After Lifeforce … Let’s just say my outlook has changed.

At my convenience, I could schedule a meeting with a phlebotomist — a medical professional trained to perform blood draws — in my own home. And if I didn’t want to complete my visit at home, Lifeforce also provided me with the option to visit my local LabCorp.

Yes, you read that correctly. Through Lifeforce, a trusted phlebotomist was available when I was ready. And if I didn’t want to complete my visit at home, Lifeforce also provided me with the option to visit my local LabCorp.

Working with Experts: Doctors and Health Coaches

Screen grab of Lifeforce results
Barret Wertz

The results I learned from my diagnostic with Lifeforce is where the story really gets interesting.

I received my results mere days after the draw, and as you can guess by reading the words I have written, I am not a medical professional. However, as part of the diagnostics, I received an hour-long consultation with one.

Lifeforce pairs you with a dedicated functional medicine clinician who interprets your biomarker baseline results and develops a personalized plan. Dr. Kimberly Hartzfeld, my Lifeforce doctor who has a background in osteopathic medicine (DO) and is an OB-GYN, was incredibly knowledgeable and patient, explaining complex concepts to me in a clear and easy-to-understand way.

What she told me had me floored.

Barret Wertz

I was unaware of certain imbalances and deficiencies in my body, such as low vitamin D and magnesium levels, and surprisingly low levels of testosterone (something far more common for men my age than I realized). This valuable information became the foundation for crafting a personalized plan tailored to my unique needs and goals.

Equally important is the ongoing support provided by a dedicated health coach. Lifeforce health coaches offer guidance, motivation, and accountability, all designed to help you stay committed to your plan and celebrate every milestone as you go.

Lifeforce extends far beyond the initial diagnostic services, too. It offers advanced nutraceuticals, such as vitamin D+K, omegas, magnesium, and CoQ10, as well as prescription pharmaceuticals, including testosterone for hormone optimization and semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist or GLP-1, used to the manage blood glucose levels and HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes, similar to drugs like Ozempic.

However, here’s what I consider the key difference with Lifeforce — not once did Dr. Hartzfeld make me feel like I had to buy the additional products Lifeforce was selling. And if I’m honest, that made me want to buy them more.

Get started today and receive $225 off your first diagnostic using code NYPOST.

Membership Benefits: Beyond the Initial Diagnostic

Additionally, if you sign up for a full Lifeforce membership, you have access to a range of benefits, including:

  • Lifeforce Diagnostic Every 3 Months: Includes an at-home blood test, a clinical report with an easy-to-read dashboard, a telehealth visit, and a personalized health optimization program.
  • A personalized health optimization program: This customized plan outlines specific actions you can take to improve your health and well-being.
  • Regular telehealth consultations with your doctor: This allows for ongoing monitoring of your health and adjustments to your personal plan as needed.
  • Health coaching support: Consistent guidance and support ensure you stay on track and achieve your goals.
  • Exclusive therapies: Access to cutting-edge treatments, such as hormone optimization and peptides, further enhancing the personalized approach to health optimization.
  • Educational resources: Lifeforce provides a wealth of educational resources, including articles, webinars, and podcasts, to help you learn more about optimizing your health.
  • Discounts: Lifeforce members receive discounts on various health and wellness products and services.

Data-Driven Results: Seeing and Feeling the Difference

Lifeforce

Lifeforce’s data-driven approach has been a game-changer for me. Instead of vague goals and aspirations, I now have clear, measurable objectives, such as increasing my vitamin D and magnesium levels and monitoring my testosterone and blood sugar.

This shift in mindset has empowered me to track my progress and make educated adjustments to my daily life. I feel confident that I can continue seeing positive improvements for years to come.

Investing in Your Future: Is Lifeforce Worth It?

Barret Wertz

While Lifeforce may not be the cheapest option available, the investment in my health is invaluable. What is it the finance guys say? “The best time to invest was yesterday. The second best time is today.”

By starting to take this more seriously now, knowing I am starting with a 78% optimal baseline, I can compound on that to be healthier for longer and enjoy life more as I age. Instead of staring at the wall of vitamins and my given drugstore or scrolling through endless online recommendations of which supplements men my age need, Lifeforce allows me to nix the unnecessary noise and narrow my focus in on exactly what my body actually needs right now.

Lifeforce

If you are serious about taking control of your health and achieving optimal well-being, I recommend exploring what Lifeforce has to offer. Take a diagnostic test, purchase high-quality supplements, or sign up for the full membership — any step forward is an investment in your future.

Get started today and receive $225 off your first diagnostic using code NYPOST.

Equinox’s ‘We Don’t Speak January’ campaign sparks uproar on social media

That New Years’ weight loss started a day late for some.

Luxury fitness club Equinox is coming under criticism online after they launched a day-long campaign labeled “We Don’t Speak January,” forbidding new members from joining.

On Jan. 1, as many ready to ring in the new year by getting into shape, those who went to Equinox’s website to sign up for the luxurious gym were greeted by an unusual message.

“It’s not you, it’s January,” a message posted on Equinox’s website read.

The company called the month of January “a fantasy, delivered to your door in a pastel-colored box.”

“You are not a New Year’s resolution. Your life doesn’t start at the beginning of the year. And that’s not what being part of Equinox is about,” the message told hopeful new members.

The message ended by assuring those wishing to sign up that the fitness club was looking “forward to welcoming you to our Equinox community tomorrow.”

Doubling down on their stance, the company posted a list of reasons in a photo on Twitter as to why they are not allowing newcomers to sign up.

“January is a language we don’t understand,” it started with, only to reiterate more of what was posted on its website.

The bizarre marketing stunt was greeted with mounting backlash online.

“No one who actually cares about fitness goes to Equinox. Rich people just have a biological need to waste money,” one Twitter user tweeted.

“Equinox gives such loser vibes,” another user said in a quote tweet of Equinox’s New Year’s Day post.

“Didn’t realize a health club would be so vehemently against people trying to…checks notes…improve their health and well-being?” a user commented under the company’s tweet.

Not everyone was upset by the fitness club’s New Year’s Day campaign.

“Equinox isn’t accepting new memberships today. Super bold, super smart, strategically aligned with their brand,” a user tweeted in support of the company’s campaign.

“Equinox didn’t accept new signups on Jan. 1. Their gyms are okay, but their marketing is A+,” another user tweeted.

A TikTok posted by Equinox and then deleted also had some fun at the expense of those unable to sign up on Jan. 1.

As on Jan. 2, new members have been welcomed to join the luxury fitness club.

The video, which showed an empty gym and one member joyfully working out alone, had an on-screen text which read, “When it’s Jan. 1, but you remember Equinox isn’t letting new members join today.”

“Take your resolutions somewhere else,” the video caption read.

As of Monday, new members could sign up for the gym, which charges $382 monthly for worldwide access to all its locations.

Mother-of-four reveals how she lost over 60 pounds in nine months

A mother of four has revealed how she lost an incredible 66 pounds in just nine months.

Sascha Farley said finding a program that worked for her, and switching up her exercise routine helped her keep on track with her fitness goals.

She chose to take part in The Healthy Mummy’s 28-day Weight Loss program and has now maintained her weight loss for five years.

She’d previously tried things such as intermittent fasting and restrictive calorie counting but it didn’t help, stating her confidence was at an all-time low.

“I didn’t think that living a healthy lifestyle was possible to enjoy, so I thought that it was always deprivation and punishment in the gym or being unhappy with your body so I couldn’t find the balance between the two. I didn’t have that knowledge and education,” Sascha said.

She said that upping her protein intake helped her on her way to her goals, as it boosted her metabolism, helped regulate hormones, and reduced her appetite.

She said switching up her exercise routine also helped her, with the recognition that every little bit helps.

“Whether it be the type, the time, the effort – it’s true we become conditioned to things we do consistently for a long period of time so ‘shock’ your body and you’ll get a reaction! Weight training is amazing for changing your composition,” she said.

Sascha Farley said she tried things like intermittent fasting and restrictive calorie counting but it didn’t help.

She added that things like setting a baseline, like three workouts a week, help you feel more motivated when you achieve those goals.

Things like parking further away from the shops or school drop-off also make a difference.

Upping her water intake by taking little sips throughout the day, eating every two to three hours, and drinking a smoothie twice a day also helped.

“Having a Healthy Mummy smoothie for breakfast and lunch was amazing when I was doing it. It accelerated my results as I knew exactly what I was eating and they are so filling, packed full of protein, vitamins, and minerals. I used the chocolate snickers recipe so I still got my calories in,” she said.

Farley said upping her protein intake, switching up her exercise routine, and setting a baseline helped her achieve her goals.

She said that swapping out her favorite things for healthier versions that she might crave also helped on her journey.

“I find when I have balance, I have better results because I don’t binge or overeat as much,” she said.

“Consistent balance is better than trying to be good all week and overeating all weekend! I have a piece of flourless chocolate cake every day!”

Now, she said her confidence is at an all-time high and it comes from her improved health and energy levels.

10 best free and paid fitness apps to try in 2023, per experts

Looking to get moving in 2023? Choosing the best fitness app that best fits your needs is step one in your journey.

After three years and counting of living in some form of lockdown, at-home workout apps are still among the best motivators to get in shape — no matter how much you’ve let your routine languish.

“We’re sitting so much more,” Sarah Shoemaker, PT, DPT, at Tribeca’s Spear Physical Therapy, told The Post. “[It’s] going to be very hard to go from zero to 100.”

If you want to get back into working out this month, Shoemaker suggests setting small, manageable goals.

“Always be mindful about what your body can and can’t do. If something starts causing pain, stop and don’t push through just because you think ‘no pain, no gain,’ ” she advised.

Most of the injuries she’s treated this year are from people working out in their homes. Shoemaker urges workout warriors to sweat it out on a mat for a slip-free surface, and set up in front of a mirror, if possible, to monitor and maintain good form.

Her physical therapist colleague, Odalisse Figueroa, agrees that you have to be vigilant when you’re working out at home with an app. “It’s really important to pay attention to verbal cues because no one is there to instruct you,” Figueroa told The Post. And even though you’re in your house, make sure to wear sneakers for the extra support.

No matter what, the best apps involve personal trainers with certifications, said Shoemaker, not just people who like fitness or look hot while working out on social media. Check out a trainer’s qualifications before you commit to following their advice on an app.

Ready to get sweaty? Here are the best fitness apps to try right now.

Ketogenic Diet ( Keto Diet)

“Ketogenic” may be a term for a low-carb diet, high fat diet that shares many connections with the Atkins and low carb diets. It involves extremely reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. The idea is for you to urge more calories from protein and fat and fewer from carbohydrates. You cut back most on the carbs that are easy to digest, like sugar, soda, pastries, and light bread.

Here are some healthy foods to eat on a ketogenic diet.

  1. Seafood
  2. Low-carb vegetables
  3. Cheese

1.Seafood

Fish and shellfish are very keto-friendly foods. Salmon and other fish are rich in B vitamins, potassium, and selenium, yet basically carb-free. However, the carbs in different types of shellfish differ. For instance, while shrimp and most crabs contain no carbs, other sorts of shellfish do. While these shellfish can still be included on a ketogenic diet, it’s important to account for these carbs when you’re trying to stay within a narrow range.

Here are the carb counts for 3.5-ounce (100-gram) servings of some popular types of shellfish.

  • clams: 4 grams
  • mussels: 4 grams
  • octopus: 4 grams
  • oysters: 3 grams
  • squid: 3 gram

Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and other fatty fish are very high in omega-3 fats, which have been found to lower insulin levels and increase insulin sensitivity in people who have overweight and obesity. In addition, frequent fish intake has been linked to a decreased risk of disease and improved cognitive health. The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1 to 2 seafood meals every week.

2. Low-carb vegetables

Non-starchy vegetables are low in calories and carbs, but high in many nutrients, including vitamin C and several minerals. Vegetables and other plants contain fiber, which your body doesn’t digest and absorb like other carbs. Therefore, check out their digestible carb count, which is total carbs minus fiber. The term “net carbs” simply refers to carbs that are consumed by the body.

Note that net carbs and their effects on the body are somewhat controversial, and more research is required. Many vegetables contain very few net carbs. However, consuming one serving of “starchy” vegetables like potatoes, yams, or beets could put you over your integrated carb limit for the day.

Low carb veggies make great replacements for higher carb foods.

For instance:

  • Cauliflower are often wont to mimic rice or mashed potatoes
  • “Zoodles” can be created from zucchini
  • Spaghetti squash is a natural substitute for spaghetti

Here are some examples of keto-friendly vegetables to add in your eating plan.

Keto vegetable list:

  • Asparagus
  • Avocado
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumber
  • Green beans
  • Eggplant
  • Kale
  • lLttuce
  • Olives
  • Peppers (especially green)
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini

3. Cheese

There are hundreds of types of cheese. Fortunately, most are very low in carbs and high in fat, which makes them a superb fit a ketogenic diet. One ounce (28 grams) of cheddar provides 1 gram of carbs, 6.5 grams of protein, and an honest amount of calcium. Cheese is high in saturated fat, but it hasn’t been shown to extend the danger of heart condition. In fact, some studies suggest that cheese may help protect against heart condition. Cheese also contains conjugated linolic acid , which may be a fat that has been linked to fat loss and enhancements in body composition. In addition, eating cheese regularly may help reduce the loss of muscle mass and strength that happens with aging. A 12-week study in older adults found that those that consumed 7 ounces (210 grams) of ricotta cheese per day experienced less muscle mass and muscle strength loss over the course of the study than others.

Here are some cheeses that are lessened in carbs for a keto diet.

Keto cheese list:

  • Blue cheese
  • Brie
  • Camembert
  • Cheddar
  • Chevre
  • Colby jack
  • Cottage cheese
  • Cream cheese
  • Feta
  • Goat cheese
  • Halloumi
  • Havarti
  • Limburger
  • Manchego
  • Mascarpone
  • Mozzarella
  • Muenster
  • Parmesan
  • Pepper jack
  • Provalone
  • Romano
  • String cheese
  • Swiss
