Microsoft Finds Major Security Flaw ‘Dirty Stream’ in Android Apps Totalling Billions of Downloads

Microsoft discovered a major security vulnerability in multiple Android apps last week that could be exploited to gain unauthorised access to apps and sensitive data on the device. Interestingly, this security flaw does not come from the system codes, but an improper usage of a particular system by developers that can lead to loopholes prone to exploitation. Notably, the flaw has been highlighted to Google, and the tech giant has taken steps to make the Android app developer community aware of the issue.

In a post on its Security Blog, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team stated, “Microsoft discovered a path traversal-affiliated vulnerability pattern in multiple popular Android applications that could enable a malicious application to overwrite files in the vulnerable application’s home directory.” The researchers also highlighted that the vulnerability was spotted in several apps in the Google Play Store that had a combined total of more than four billion installations.

This vulnerability emerges when a developer incorrectly uses Android’s content provider system, which is designed to secure data exchange between different apps on a device. This includes data isolation, URI permissions, path validation and other security measures to stop unauthorised access by the apps or anyone else breaking into the app. However, improper implementation of the system affects a component called custom intents. These are the messaging objects that conduct two-way communication between different apps. When this vulnerability exists the apps can ignore the security measures and let other apps (or hackers controlling them) access sensitive data stored in them.

In case of an attack on the device, hackers can manipulate this vulnerability by accessing just one app, they can enter all such apps that contain this loophole. This enables the bad actors to gain complete control over the device or steal sensitive data including financial information. Notably, the vulnerability was found in the Xiaomi File Manager and WPS Office apps. Microsoft stated in its report that developers behind both the apps have investigated and fixed the issue.

Google has also taken cognisance of the issue and published a post on its Android Developers blog. The company has highlighted the common errors and ways to fix them. It is expected that developers of affected apps will be fixing the issues in the coming days and release a fix. While end users cannot do much to avoid this vulnerability, it is recommended that they remain proactive in updating the apps on their devices and avoid downloading apps from third-party sources for a while.

WhatsApp Could Soon Get a ‘Recently Online’ List to Recommend Contacts to Users: Report

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will reportedly recommend contacts you can reach out to. The feature is a list dubbed Recently Online which shows the names of contacts who were recently logged into the app. The report speculates that the purpose of the feature is to help users determine people who are more likely to respond if texted or called. However, it will not show the currently online people, and instead only give an approximate understanding of those who have used the app recently.

According to a report by WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is testing a new feature that was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.8.10.70 update via the TestFlight app. The report also highlighted that some beta testers might have access to the new feature, although it is not rolled out widely in the beta app. Interestingly, the same feature was also introduced in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.9.14 build, highlighting that both of the platforms could soon get this feature in their respective apps.

WhatsApp’s Recently Online list

Based on the screenshot shared by the publication, the Recently Online list only appears on the new chat and new call screen where the user selects the contact to write a text or make a call. Here, underneath the basic menu options, a new section highlighting the contacts that were recently online will be shown. It is unclear what exactly constitutes “recently online”, and what is the time limit after which a name is removed from the list.

The feature will, however, not show the list of people who are online currently, or the time when they were last online, as per the report. This is likely done to protect the privacy of the users. Further, those users who have set their Last seen to nobody will not appear on this list. It is unclear whether they will be able to see the Recently Online list or not.

This feature is currently in beta, but the report claims that it is likely to be rolled out to users globally in the coming weeks.

Google Play Store Banned 2.28 Mn Policy-Violating Apps in 2023, Sued Developers Behind 2 Fraudulent Apps

Google Play Store prevented 2.28 million apps from being published in 2023 due to major policy violations. In a new report published by the tech giant, it highlighted the steps taken in the last year to ensure the security and privacy of Play Store users. The company further highlighted that it banned 3,33,000 developer accounts from the platform for confirmed malware and repeated severe policy violations. Google has also introduced new policies to improve the overall user experience in the app marketplace.

In a post on its security-focused blog, Google explained the measures it took in the year 2023 to protect its users from malicious apps, malware, and instances of online scams. Apart from preventing 2.28 million apps from being published on the grounds of policy violations and banning 333K developer accounts, the platform also rejected or remediated around 200K app submissions for not ensuring proper use of sensitive permissions. Sensitive permissions include background location tracking, access to SMS and Contacts, and more.

Additionally, the app marketplace has also filed a lawsuit in federal court against two app developers for making multiple attempts to upload fraudulent investment and crypto exchange apps to scam users. The company highlighted the fraudsters also provided misrepresentations to create a loophole in the acceptance process. “This lawsuit is a critical step in holding these bad actors accountable and sending a clear message that we will aggressively pursue those who seek to take advantage of our users,” Google added.

The tech giant is also making policy changes to ensure greater user safety. Apps that enable account creation will now need to provide an option to initiate account and data deletion within the app as well as online. This feature has also been added within the Data safety section of the Play Store.

Google has also restructured its App Defense Alliance (ADA) after partnering with Microsoft and Meta as steering committee members. ADA is now under the Joint Development Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation family. The company says the alliance is aimed at adopting app security best practices and guidelines as well as preparing countermeasures against emerging security risks.

The safety initiatives are not just limited to apps within the Google Play Store. The company said it boosted the capabilities of Play Protect to allow real-time scanning at the code level of an app downloaded from alternative app marketplaces. It claims that it was able to detect over five million new malicious off-Play apps. As per the post, Play Protect’s machine learning algorithms learn from each submitted app and self-improve over time.

Threads Is Testing an Automatic Post Archive Feature to Let Users Hide Old Posts

Threads is testing a new feature that will allow users to archive posts automatically after a certain period of time. The new feature was confirmed by the Instagram head Adam Mosseri who also heads the X (formerly known as Twitter)-styled platform. He highlighted that users will have the choice to both auto-archive posts as well as manually hide them from their profile. Further, the company also plans to allow users to reverse the effect and bring posts back to their timeline as well.

According to a Threads post by Mosseri, the company is testing the option to allow users to archive posts. Currently, the feature is only available to a small number of users, and likely still under development. While the Instagram head did not reveal any timeline for the release of the feature, it could be rolled out in the next two weeks, which is how long it usually takes after an official announcement.

Mosseri also shared a couple of screenshots detailing the feature. Based on the images, the feature can be accessed by tapping on the three dotted menu next to every post made by the user. Tapping on it will show an Archive now option. There is also an option to set all posts to be archived after a set period of time automatically, but users will have to activate it separately. At the moment, it is unclear whether users will be able to choose the period after which posts get archived or if they will only be able to choose from options given by the platform.

In case a user wants a post back, they will be able to unarchive a post and make it public again. Mosseri highlighted that he ran a poll sometime ago, and on the basis of the feedback, the feature will not be turned on by default and will only be activated when users themselves activate it. Notably, this feature is similar to the archive feature on Instagram.

Threads developers have been busy testing and rolling out new features lately. As per a report, the platform is also testing a feature to show real-time search results. Some users have shared screenshots where two different options — Top and Recent — can be seen when searching a topic.

X to Boost Its ‘Video-First’ Plans With a New Smart TV App, CEO Linda Yaccarino Reveals

X (formerly Twitter), is bolstering its video-first ambitions with a new TV app. The company announced on Tuesday that X will soon get a new smart TV app that will be compatible with most devices and allow users to watch the videos hosted on the platform on a larger screen. While there is no launch date for the app in sight, some of its features have also been highlighted such as trending algorithm-based content curation, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered topic organisation, and more.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO, X, announced the new development via a post on the platform. She said, “From the small screen to the big screen X is changing everything. Soon we’ll bring real-time, engaging content to your smart TVs with the X TV App. This will be your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.” The smart TV app is still under development, but the CEO highlighted that it will be launched soon.

Making the announcement, Yaccarino also revealed a few of the features that users of the app will get. The X TV app will be powered by the same trending video algorithm that runs on the platform. Users are likely to see the most popular videos based on their preferences lined up upon booting up the app. The app will also let users organise videos by topics which are AI-powered. The company says this will create a personalised experience but more details are awaited.

X TV app will also support cross-device viewings. So, a user could pause a video on their mobile app and start at the same place on the smart TV as long as both apps have the same account logged in. Yaccarino also said that the video search functionality will be improved to help viewers easily find what they’re looking for. Casting support will also be provided.

Along with the post, Yaccarino also shared a teaser video of the app, which can be seen above. Based on the video, the interface appears to be quite generic with account settings on the top left, followed by a search and home icon. Several feeds segregated by topics such as Trending and For You were also visible. More such topics may be created by AI and X’s recommendation algorithm curates the content in them.

Slack AI With New Recaps Feature Now Available to Paid Users Globally

Slack has finally made its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered assistant, Slack AI, available to users globally. On Thursday, the company announced the general availability of Slack AI to all users and organisations with a paid subscription to the platform with an add-on purchase. This came after the platform unveiled its AI features earlier in February. The AI assistant offers several features such as recaps, search, and conversation summaries. The business-focused communications app has also shared the features it plans to add in the future.

The company made the announcement via a blog post, and said, “In February, we released Slack AI and a set of initial features designed to help you work smarter and faster. Today we’re announcing that Slack AI is now available in English, Spanish and Japanese for customers on all paid Slack subscriptions to purchase.” However, those who want to use the AI’s features will have to pay an add-on charge for it.

Slack AI features

Slack AI comes with several AI-powered features which the company says are designed to save users’ time and improve their productivity. One of the features is called search where users can ask the AI a question by typing it in the search bar and it will run through the organisation’s public communication and the user’s personal conversations to find the answer. These answers will come with direct citations for the user to find the source and read additional information.

Channel recaps is another interesting feature. Users can generate highlights for any channel they are a part of with a click and get a quick rundown of everything that was discussed in easy-to-understand summaries. These can be set to be delivered daily or have it be shown on command. Users can summarise the past seven days or set a custom date range.

Finally, conversation summaries do the same thing but for a particular thread or a conversation. The company says users can get a gist of the discussion in a single click using Slack AI with citations to denote where the source was taken from. In future, the company plans to add a note-taking and summarising feature within its Huddle voice and video calling interface to save time. “Businesses of all sizes are already saving an average of 97 minutes per user each week, according to an internal analysis of our pilot customers,” claimed the platform.

Google’s Removal of Apps From Play Store in India ‘Cannot Be Permitted’: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Google’s decision to remove some apps in India from its app store “cannot be permitted”, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday, amid an ongoing dispute over service fee payments to the US firm.

Google on Friday removed from its Play Store many Indian apps, including Matrimony.com’s popular Bharat Matrimony and job search app Naukri, saying the companies were not abiding by its in-app payment guidelines.

Vaishnaw said he has held talks with Google and will meet the startups, which needed protection in India.

“This cannot be permitted. This kind of de-listing cannot be permitted,” he said in a statement.

Google declined to comment.

The removal has sparked criticism from many startups who have for years protested and legally challenged many of the US giant’s practices, including its in-app fee. Google says the fees help develop and promote the Android and Play Store ecosystem.

The dispute centers on efforts by some Indian startups to stop Google from imposing a fee of 11 percent-26 percent on in-app payments, after the country’s antitrust authorities ordered it to not mandatorily enforce an earlier system of charging 15 percent-30 percent.

But Google effectively received the go-ahead to charge the fee or remove apps after two court decisions in January and February, one by the Supreme Court.

Google said on Friday that some Indian companies had chosen not to pay for the “immense value they receive on Google Play”.

Among the worst hit by the removals is Matrimony.com which has seen more than 150 of its apps dropped from the Play Store.

“All our apps have been removed and we are out of Play Store and (that) means out of business,” founder Murugavel Janakiraman told Reuters on Saturday. “If this continuous for a long term then we will have significant drop in revenue.”

Info Edge, another affected company, had seen its job search app Naukri and another real estate search app, removed. Many of the company’s apps had been restored, its founder said on Saturday on X, without elaborating.

Google briefly removed popular Indian payments app Paytm from its Play Store in 2020 citing some policy violations. The move led to the company’s founder and the wider startup industry joining together to challenge Google by launching their own app stores and filing legal cases.

Google to Take Action Against 10 Indian App Developers Over Play Store Fee Non-Payment

Google, on Friday, March 1, said it would enforce action against a group of Indian app developers as they had not complied with the Play Store’s billing policies. The Alphabet-owned company claimed that ten Indian app developers, which include “many well-established” companies, have failed to pay the Play Store fee for availing its services, and now may get removed from the Android app marketplace as a result of it. The tech giant also highlighted it was taking measures to not give differential treatment from the majority of its developer base who have been paying their share.

According to a report by TechCrunch, a group of Indian companies had filed petitions to the Madras High Court challenging Google’s Play Store billing policies, arguing that the tech giant charges a very steep amount as a fee for its services. The crux of the issue lies in the fact that the tech giant levies between 11 percent to 26 percent as a service fee per download of a paid app as well as on purchases made in-app.

The group reportedly includes Bharat Matrimony, Shaadi.com, Unacademy, Kuku FM, Info Edge, and more. While the High Court dismissed the appeal, the Supreme Court of India agreed to hear pleas filed by the firms, as per a report by NDTV Profit. The Supreme Court, however, refused to give any interim order to Google to not delist the companies’ apps from the Play Store.

Later, the group of app developers wrote to Google requesting it to not delist the apps till March 19, when the Special Leave Petition (SPL) would be heard by the Supreme Court, reported The Economic Times. However, it now appears that Google has decided not to listen to the pleas and instead begin taking action against the non-paying developers.

In a post, Google acknowledged the Supreme Court’s decision to not request the tech giant to keep the apps on the platform. It stated, “For years, no court or regulator has denied Google Play’s right to charge for the value and services we provide. On 9 February, the Supreme Court also refused to interfere with our right to do so. While some of the developers that were refused interim protection have started fairly participating in our business model and ecosystem, others choose to find ways to not do so.” Additionally, it stated that only 60 developers in India were charged a fee above 15 percent.

Further, the Android platform developer highlighted that not taking action would be unfair to more than 2 lakh Indian developers who have been complying with its billing policy. “After giving these developers more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the Supreme Court’s order, we are taking necessary steps to ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally,” Google added.

The TechCrunch report mentioned, citing unnamed sources, that the tech giant will begin removing a few of these apps from its marketplace starting Friday. We, at Gadgets 360, found that the matrimony app Shaadi by Shaadi.com and Jodii by Matrimony.com, the content streaming platform by Alt Balaji Altt, and the dating app QuackQuack have already been removed from the platform and the search result shows the icon of the app and its name with the message “This app isn’t available”.

Removal from the platform is not the end, however. Google stated that developers can resubmit their apps to be listed on the Play Store by adhering to the payment policy, and likely clearing their dues. Alternatively, a favourable decision by the Supreme Court after March 19 could result in Google being ordered to revise its billing policy.

PhonePe Launches Indus Appstore in India, Will Not Charge App Listing Fee for the First Year

PhonePe launched its Android-based mobile app marketplace, Indus Appstore, in India on Wednesday, February 21. The app store was launched by the Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a hybrid event. The Walmart-owned fintech firm said its new app storefront intends to solve the major pain point of the lack of regional language content in marketplaces. The Indus Appstore will be available in English and 12 Indian regional languages. It also comes with features such as video-led app discovery, mobile-based logins, and AI-driven app recommendations.

Indus supports regional languages like Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and more. It comes with a toggle button on the top through which users can switch between languages. The toggle not only changes the language of the content on the interface but also app names, app trailers and videos, as well as app descriptions. PhonePe said that the translations were done at the company’s end.

Further, the platform also allows users to search in any of the 12 regional languages to see search results in those languages. PhonePe founder and CEO Sameer Nigam said that even transliterations in regional languages will fetch results. Android smartphone users can download and install the app here.

Indus Appstore has 200,000 apps at its launch, the company said. Some of the prominent apps include Flipkart, Disney+ Hotstar, Myntra, Zomato, Swiggy, Snapchat, and more. The number also includes several thousand games, where it is heavily focused. The platform has three major categories in gaming which are casual gaming, heavy gaming and real money gaming (RMG).

App listings on the developer platform will be free for the first year but after that, an annual fee will be levied. PhonePe also stated that the marketplace will not charge developers any platform fee or commission for in-app payments if separate payment gateways are used. In contrast, Apple and Google charge between 15 percent and 25 percent commission for the same and do not allow integration of other payment services.

Additionally, the platform allows users to do a mobile number and OTP-based logins instead of using emails. For app recommendations, the developer platform uses artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms and uses location data. There are a couple of smart features as well such as smart updates that will allow for faster updations to the latest version. The personalised storage management feature will recommend to users the rarely used apps which can be put into hibernation (updates will be stopped) and the apps which are never used and can be deleted.

Nigam also said that app developers will have an option on whether to show ads in their apps or not. Those who opt in will be able to earn a commission from the generated ad revenue.

Apple Vision Pro to launch with over 600 apps and games optimized for the new headset

The pace is picking up for the Apple Vison Pro apps ahead of the spatial computing device’s Friday launch as developers ready their apps for the new platform. While just last week, only 150-plus apps had been specifically designed for the Vision Pro so far, according to a third-party analysis of the App Store, Apple announced today that more than 600 new apps and games are being readied for the Vison Pro ahead of its debut. These join the more than 1 million already compatible apps across iOS and iPadOS, the company says.

The news comes on the heels of Apple’s proposed compliance plan with the EU’s new regulation, the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forces Apple to level the playing field by opening up to alternative app stores and payments. But Apple’s compliance plan favors Apple, not the spirit of the law. As a result, critics including Spotify, Epic Games, and Microsoft dubbed it a “farce” full of “junk fees,” and a “step in the wrong direction,” respectively. Because of this, there was growing concern that Apple’s anti-developer stance with regard to the DMA could lead to lessened developer interest in building apps for its newest computing platform, the AR/VR headset. Already, major companies like Netflix and YouTube have said they don’t plan on supporting the device at launch.

Apple today is hoping to put those concerns to rest with its announcement that the Vision Pro will have a sizable app catalog, despite the device’s high price, which limits its reach, and the current lack of developer goodwill Apple has shown.

The company says over 600 apps and games have been designed to take advantage of the Vision Pro’s capabilities and its 3D user interface that’s navigated using your eyes, hands, and voice.

Several streaming apps have already announced their support, including Disney+, ESPN, MLB, PGA Tour, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, Red Bull TV, IMAX, TikTok and MUBI.

The PGA Tour Vision app offers a golf game with real-time shot tracking across models of real golf courses, while the NBA app will allow streaming up to 5 broadcasts live or on-demand at once, Apple notes. Red Bull TV will include 3D maps of races. Soccer fans will also be able to stream MLS Season Pass via Apple’s own Apple TV app. That app will offer access to Apple’s Originals, over 200 3D movies, and Apple Immersive Video.

Cable companies are also on board with apps from Charter Spectrum, Comcast Xfinity, Cox Contour, Sling TV, and Verizon Fios. Other sports broadcasters are joining, as well, including CBS, NBC, NBC Sports, Fox Sports, and the UFC, in addition to ESPN, Paramount+, Peacock, and others.

In its announcement, Apple highlighted productivity apps for the Vision Pro, like brainstorming app MindNote, data and project management apps OmniFocus and OmniPlan, Microsoft 365 apps, calendar app Fantastical, Box, Numerics, JigSpace, Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Team, Slack, Notion, Todoit, and Navi, which translates conversations in real-time.

Hoping to dispel worries over Vision Pro’s lack of games, especially compared with more accessibly priced headsets like Meta’s Quest VR devices, Apple noted that the device will feature titles like BA 2K24 Arcade Edition, Sonic Dream Team, TMNT Splintered Fate, and others. It will additionally offer a catalog of more than 250 games, with no in-app purchases or ads via Apple Arcade, including Synth Riders, LEGO Builder’s Journey, Super Fruit Ninja, Game Room, WHAT THE GOLF?, Cut the Rope 3, Jetpack Joyride 2, Bloons TD 6+, stitch., Patterned, Illustrated, and Wylde Flowers.

Other apps are also launching on Vision Pro’s App Store, including an app featuring relaxing 3D dioramas from Loóna, spatial puzzles in Blackbox, and the skateboarding app Skatrick Pro. Users can also access Mac App Store games and apps like Steam via Mac Virtual Display, like Lies of P and Baldur’s Gate 3.

Apple highlighted other titles, new and old, including Hold the World, which transports users to London’s Natural History Museum; The Archive, which lets Star Trek fans and others explore immersive locations and media; air traffic control experience ForeFlight; 3D weather app CARROT Weather; 3D learning apps solAR; solar system explorers Sky Guide and Night Sky; medical apps Insight Heart, CellWalk, Complete HeartX; mindfulness and wellness apps Lungy: Spaces, Odio, and Endel; and music apps djay, NowPlaying, STAGE+, Spool, Animoog Galaxy, AmazeVR Concerts, tappr.tv, and Apple Music.

Shopping apps include J.Crew Virtual Closet and Mytheresa: Luxury Experience, which includes live consultations, as well as Lowe’s Style Studio, Wayfair Decorify, and home-buying app Zillow, which will feature virtual home tours.

It seems many developers are waiting until the last minute to ship their apps to the App Store, as app intelligence firm Appfigures’ ongoing count sees only 350+ apps available as of today.
