4 reasons for optimism in Week 2

Billy Hardiman-USA TODAY Sports

Certainly, anyone who watched the Giants’ Week 1 performance should be concerned about New York’s offensive line moving forward.

The Giants also did not show much on the defensive line, either. At least not in terms of pass rush.

Additionally, injuries to Andrew Thomas and Azeez Ojulari should be a concern for both sides of the trenches moving forward.

However, the Cardinals simply do not stack up to the threat the Cowboys present on either side of the ball in the trenches. Ideally, this will be a ‘get right’ game for the Giants and the opportunity is there to win the battle of the trenches.

The New York Giants opened the 2023 regular season with an absolute stinker on Sunday night, falling to the Dallas Cowboys, 40-0, in their worst Week 1 loss in franchise history.

Not only was it an all-time franchise mark in futility, it was one of the worst statistical performances (in some aspects) in the NFL’s long lifespan.

Here’s a look at some studs and quite a few duds from the humiliating beatdown at MetLife Stadium.

Ex-New York Giant Kyle Rudolph offers high praise of QB Daniel Jones

Despite receiving mixed reviews five years into his career, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has the full support of his current teammates and former teammates alike.

Jones, of course, had his best season as a pro last year since entering the league in 2019 and had arguably his best game in his playoff debut against the Minnesota Vikings.

We have seen plenty of praise from his current teammates, but it’s even more telling when one of Jones’ former teammates shows support and confidence in his continued progression.

Former Giants tight end Kyle Rudolph was a guest on FanDuel TV’s Up & Adams with Kay Adams this week and had high praise for his ex-quarterback.

“I think you expect the guy who takes another step forward off of what he showed last year,” Rudolph said. “You look at DJ and the circumstances that he was placed in his first three years — that organization did everything possible to screw him up. You draft the kid sixth overall, many people believe he was over-drafted, but they saw a skillset. And I say this all the time, and I think people started to see it a little bit last year, no one wants to give him the credit for being this kind of freak athlete because he’s a nerdy kid from Duke and he just doesn’t have that about him.”

Much like Eli Manning before him, Jones has never been the rah-rah type of leader who steals national headlines.

“People don’t want to give him that credit because it’s not his nature, it’s not his personality. But he’s as talented and I said this when I got to New York, he’s as talented if not more talented than any quarterback I played with at that point,” Rudolph said. “And now you’re starting to see his skill set shine through under an offensive-minded head coach in Brian Daboll, who is putting him in situations.

“You know, I was with (Mike) Kafka as a backup quarterback in Minnesota and now seeing him as an offensive coordinator, and the things that he’s implementing there… These guys, we keep talking to the quarterbacks and the quarterback position. If you don’t put them in a situation to be successful and surround them with guys up front to protect them and playmakers around them, they’re not gonna have success, especially early in their career.”

The Giants and general manager Joe Schoen set out to do exactly that this offseason.

“I think that’s the best trait about him is he has a similar personality (to) Eli Manning to where all of that media in New York City and all of the outside perspective won’t bother him,” Rudolph said. “Whether it’s through a great season and a playoff win like last year or when the New York Giants have adversity like they will at some point this year. That adversity is not gonna bother him. He’s going to show up to work every day and give you everything he has to go out and help his team win and that’s all he really cares about.

“I think that’s ultimately why you see Eli go on in, win a couple of Super Bowls, and win a couple of Super Bowl MVPs. Because he never really worried about anything else. It was just about going and playing ball and giving his guys around him a chance to have success, and that’s what DJ does.”

Rudolph signed with the Giants in 2021 and was expected to be a red zone threat for Big Blue. His tenure lasted just one year as he was released the following offseason.

Despite his story stint in blue, he saw firsthand everything Jones brings to the table.

Giants vs. Cowboys: 3 causes for concern in Week 1

The New York Giants will square off against their division rival Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football to open their season.

The Giants are hoping to start the season off with a win just as they did last year in head coach Brian Daboll’s first year as a head coach. It will be no easy task against a Cowboys team that the Giants have struggled mightily against in recent memory.

Despite the Giants’ improvements to their roster, they are currently listed as home underdogs.

As the Giants look to get off to a good start on the season, here are three causes for concern going into Sunday.

New York Giants restructure contract of QB Daniel Jones

Just months after signing him to a four-year, $160 million deal, the New York Giants have restructured the contract of quarterback Daniel Jones.

With the team (soon to be) more than $5 million over the 2023 salary cap with Week 1 of the regular season kicking off, general manager Joe Schoen needed to create some space and did so thanks to DJ.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Giants converted $8.42 million of Jones’ base salary into a signing bonus, creating nearly $6.32 million in cap space.

Other options Schoen had were extending either defensive lineman Leonard Williams or cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, but he seemed to shut that notion down last week.

“Yeah,” Schoen told reporters when asked if negotiations will wait until after the season. “Unless something changes, I’ll never say ‘never,’ but as of right now that’s the plan.

“I won’t say we won’t do it, but we have nothing on the docket right now.”

With the Jones restructure, the Giants are now roughly $825,000 under the cap (as of Thursday). They will need to create upwards of $6 million more in space to operate this season.

Note: The NFL is still operating under the top-51 rule until Thursday so reports on how much the Giants saved will vary depending on which metric is being used. In the above article, we used Thursday’s projected 53-man roster.

5 keys for New York Giants as 2023 regular season gets underway

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants were 1-4-1 in the division last year and still finished 9-7-1 and qualified for the playoffs.

That’s an anomaly, folks. Teams usually need to win their divisional games in order to better their postseason chances. Last year, the Giants lost all four games to the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. They fared better abasing Washington with a 1-0-1 record, which boosted them into the postseason.

But the fact remains that Philly and Dallas own them. Since the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI in February of 2012, they are 5-18 (including playoffs) against the Eagles and 5-17 against the Cowboys. They have, however, been successful against Washington with a 14-7-1 record.

A lot will come from Daniel Jones’ maturation. In his career, he is 5-1-1 versus Washington and 2-3 against Philadelphia. If the Giants are going to make a run in the NFC East, they must start beating Dallas, who Jones has a 1-6 record against.

‘We’ve got a good group’

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, after four seasons of trying to figure out what he is in this league, is standing at the precipice of stardom.

Jones has been given a chance to become one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. He is coached by the men who mentored two of the game’s best in Patrick Mahomes (offensive coordinator Mike Kafka) and Josh Allen (head coach Brian Daboll and QB coach Shea Tierney), and has been surrounded with enough weapons this offseason to possibly make that happen.

General manager Joe Schoen has supplied Jones with a top tight end in Darren Waller and brought back his Pro Bowl running back, Saquon Barkley, in addition to fortifying the wide receivers corps.

The Giants don’t have a legit No. 1 wideout but do have a slew of very capable ‘twos’ and ‘threes.’ They believe that will be plenty.

“I think we have a ton of guys who can make a lot of plays in a lot of different ways,” Jones told reporters on Wednesday.

“As a quarterback, I think that’s an exciting opportunity for you to see all those guys line up and the different ways we can attack a defense and all the different skill sets. They’re all good at a number of things, and really good at a couple of things. It’s emphasizing those, and that’s an exciting position to be in from a quarterback. I think we’ve got a good group.”

He’s right. The Giants have a starting trio of Isaiah Hodgins and Darius Slayton on the wings with Parris Campbell in the slot. Behind those three are Sterling Shepard, Wan’Dale Robinson, and rookie speedster Jalin Hyatt.

The biggest project will be Hyatt, a player who has been spectacular at times but is still very much a rookie. He will locker next to Jones this year in an effort to solidify their bond.

“I think he’s made a ton of progress and worked really hard to do it,” said Jones. “So, a large credit to him and how he’s gone about his work. He’s made a tremendous amount of progress showing up throughout camp making plays. We’ll continue to work towards improving all together. He’s in a good spot.”

But that spot is still a tough one. Jones explained being a rookie wideout is no walk in the park.

“I think for any rookie, it’s just coming in and learning an NFL offense, learning the NFL passing concepts, the routes you’re running. For all rookie receivers, it’s a lot different than what they’re used to. I think that’s the big thing, just learning the concepts, learning the playbook, and then learning the details in the routes and how to work against certain different looks, how to get open, how to feel space and zone and then beat man coverage. He’s done a good job learning all that.”

Hyatt was asked how much growth he’s seen in himself since he arrived at camp a month ago.

“I’ve seen a lot of growth. It starts with the guys you go against in practice every day,” he said. “We have some great competitors here. It starts with your habits; I’ve learned some good habits here, and it starts with being in the film room more with (quarterback Daniel Jones) DJ and just trying to connect with everything and try to get a rhythm for myself and get comfortable just in the playbook and in this offense and do whatever they need me to do. So, a ton of growth since day one.”

Daniel Jones checks every box

Three months after the New York Giants hired Joe Schoen as their general manager, he made the decision to decline quarterback Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option.

That decision would come back to haunt Schoen, who ended up signing DJ to a four-year, $160 million contract this offseason.

The GM has since joked that he would like to go back in time and pick up Jones’ fifth-year option but admitted there were no regrets or concerns about the massive deal given to their young quarterback.

Asked again about that decision during a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Schoen said DJ checks all the boxes.

“What stood out was his work ethic. His football IQ, his passion for the game and his passion to be great. That stood out right away,” Schoen said.

Schoen says criticism over Jones’ statistics — particularly his lack of passing touchdowns — is somewhat misleading. He points out the lack of continuity around Jones over the early part of his career and the toll that can take on quarterbacks, having to learn new systems every single year instead of focusing on other areas of improvement. Schoen also pointed out the team’s “turnstile” at wide receiver last year.

All of those things can have a negative impact on a quarterback, but Schoen was impressed with how Jones has navigated those rough waters.

“To me, it was a 25-year-old young man who still had a lot of upside. The circumstances the year before we got here — I can’t speak as much on that but I do know there wasn’t continuity,” Schoen said. “And we did, we had a little bit of a turnstile at receiver last year.

“To be able to operate in that type of environment is difficult at the position. To see how he separated himself, elevated himself above the circumstances at times last year, and we still won games, I think he checked every box.”

Jones is now entering his second year in Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka’s offensive system and his comfort level has obviously improved. He’s been stellar this summer and appears poised for his best season as a pro.

CBS Sports takes the under on Daniel Jones throwing for 4,000+ yards

The New York Giants went out and added as many weapons as they could for quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason.

Among the imports are tight end Darren Waller, and wide receivers Parris Campbell and Cole Beasley. General manager Joe Schoen also added impressive talent through the 2023 NFL draft, including wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and running back Eric Gray.

Not to ignore other glaring issues, the team beefed up the offensive line as well. The most notable addition is rookie center John Michael Schmitz.

With all of that improved stock around Jones, will He eclipse the 4,000-yard mark in 2023? Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports says “no.”

Why can’t Jones throw for 4,000 yards? Last year was arguably his best season and Jones only averaged 200.3 passing yards per game on a career-high 6.8 yards per attempt. Unless Brian Daboll makes significant changes to his offense to favor Jones, the quarterback likely won’t be putting up those numbers.

Jones would also have to play all 17 games and average 235.3 pass yards per game to accomplish the feat, the latter he’s never done (Jones would have played all 17 games if the Giants didn’t clinch a playoff berth prior to the final week). This all comes down to how Daboll uses Saquon Barkley, but 4,000 passing yards is a stretch for Jones until his head coach proves otherwise.

Not turning the football over and winning games is more important anyway.

This isn’t necessarily a slight to Jones. The Giants were a run-heavy team early on last season and that includeD DJ himself. But if training camp and the preseason are any indication, the Giants will be throwing a lot more in 2023.
