SoundHound Launches Chat AI Voice Assistant With Access to ChatGPT on Android, iOS

SoundHound, best known for its music recognition software service, has announced that it is bringing ChatGPT to its Chat AI iOS and Android apps. The company claims that this integration will help users avoid what the company calls AI hallucinations, by picking the right response through intelligent processing. Businesses can access the platform and build AI-powered next-generation voice assistants. The SoundHound Chat AI app is available to download on Android Google Play Store and on iOS App Store as well.

Announcing the news through a newsroom post on its official website, SoundHound said that it is bringing together voice-enabled Generative AI and the power of a voice assistant, to introduce SoundHound Chat AI, that will allow consumers and businesses to build their own AI-powered voice assistants.

The company claims that the platform allows users to submit queries in the fastest, most efficient way, that is by speaking. Responses are also shared in the form of text and/or audio. SoundHound claims that its SoundHound Chat AI platform reduces the number of unrecognised queries by leveraging a proprietary technology that selects the most appropriate response from the most relevant domain, by leveraging ChatGPT, and real-time questions about weather, sports, stock, and flight status amongst others.

SoundHound AI Chat proprietary technology is being called CaiLAN (Conversational AI Language) and its machine learning technology has been named CaiNet (Conversational AI Network). CaiLAN builds knowledge domains on topics like weather, restaurants, traffic, and local search using software engineering and a network of over 100 domains. Meanwhile, CaiNet connects SoundHound’s internal and external models such as OpenAI’s GPT, amongst others, added the official newsroom post. CaiLAN then intelligently decides the best results to provide to the user.

Users wishing to use the app may do so by subscribing to a weekly or annual plan. As previously mentioned, the SoundHound Chat AI app is available on Android and iOS.

A smart AI-powered voice assistant such as the SoundHound Chat AI has been popular in science fiction, with movies like ‘Her’ portraying what such a technology could sound and feel like. “SoundHound Chat AI ushers in a new phase of voice-enabled, conversational AI that used to only exist in science fiction,” said Keyvan Mohajer, CEO and Co-Founder of SoundHound, in the newsroom post.

Google Rolling Out iOS-Like ‘Sync Apps to Devices’ Feature for Android: Report

Google has reportedly begun rolling out an iOS-like feature to simplify multi-device usage for the users of the Android ecosystem. A new option titled ‘Sync Apps to Devices’ is now said to being released under the ‘Manage apps and device’ section of Google PlayStore. This option is expected to let Android users install apps on all the devices that they are logged-in from a single Google account. The aim behind releasing this feature is to raise the convenience quotient for the users of Android devices like phones, tablets, and watches, among others.

Google has not officially announced the roll out of this feature, however, some people have already noticed the new option on PlayStore. Screenshots of the same have emerged on Twitter.

Tapping on the option will reportedly allow users to see all the devices that are signed-in from their Google accounts. They can then select or deselect the devices they want to sync their phone apps to.

A note from Google reportedly also mentions, “Apps that you install on this device will also be installed on your synced devices.”

People using two or more Android phones at the same time will also be able to mirror all their apps signed-in to the same Google accounts on all of the phones. The feature, however, will not update the apps on all the connected devices at the same time. Users will have to manually update all the apps on different devices.

Details on the wider rollout of this feature remains unclear, including the timeline. A confirmation about this feature from Google is also awaited for the time being.

Apple already provides this functionality to iOS users. By default, all the devices connected to the same Apple ID are synced across iPhones, iPads, MacBooksand Apple Watches.

Google’s Hearing Against CCI’s Penalty Order Concluded, NCLAT Reserves Judgement

The NCLAT on Monday concluded its hearing over the petition filed by Google, in which the tech giant challenged the Competition Commission’s order imposing a Rs. 1,337.76 crore penalty for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices.

A two-member bench of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) was conducting the hearing on a day-to-day basis for over a month.

“Heard Learned Counsel for the parties. Hearing is completed. Judgment Reserved,” said the NCLAT bench comprising Chairperson Justice Ashok Bhushan and Member Alok Srivastava.

On October 20 last year, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) slapped a penalty of Rs. 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices. The regulator had also ordered the internet major to cease and desist from various unfair business practices.

This ruling was challenged before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), which is an appellate authority over the orders passed by the CCI.

Google in its petition had contended the investigation done against it by CCI as “tainted”, contending that the two informants on whose complaint the fair trade regulator has initiated the enquiry were working at the same office that was investigating the tech major.

According to Google’s plea, CCI has failed to conduct an “impartial, balanced, and legally sound investigation” while ignoring evidence from Indian users, app developers, and OEMs.

Challenging the CCI order, Google said the findings are “patently erroneous and ignore” the reality of competition in India, Google’s pro-competitive business model, and the benefits created for all stakeholders.

Google claimed the DG copy-pasted extensively from a European Commission decision, deploying evidence from Europe that was not examined in India or even on the Commission’s file.

While CCI, during the course of hearing alleged that Google has created a digital data hegemony and called for a market space with “free, fair and open competition”.

Additional Solicitor General N Venkataraman, who had represented CCI before the appellate tribunal, said a market with greater freedom for all players would be in total sync with principles of free competition rather than the ‘walled garden’ approach of the internet major.

He submitted that Google had used its money-spinning search engine as the ‘castle’ and the rest of the other apps to play the defensive role of ‘moat’. This ‘castle and moat’ strategy is data hegemony, which means a big market player tends to get bigger and bigger while a small entrant struggles to attain a critical mass of users and user data.

According to him, data capture and data deployment are getting exploited and monetised as advertisement revenues. When the choice is the guiding principle of the competition law, Google’s hegemony reduces both choice and competition.

Venkataraman emphasised that implementation of the remedies made by the CCI would go a long way towards having a market with greater freedom for all players, which would be in total sync with the principles of free competition rather than the ‘walled garden’ approach of Google.

The abuse of dominance by Google stands proved in every criteria laid under Section 4 of the Competition Act in terms of mandatory pre-installation, premier placement and bundling of core apps. Such practices result in the imposition of unfair conditions and supplementary obligations, he said.

Netflix Bets Big on Games, to Launch 40 New Titles in 2023 on iOS and Android

As one of the biggest streaming services in the world, Netflix is well known for its massive catalogue of original and licensed movie and TV series content. However, many may not be aware that Netflix is also a subscription game service for mobile games since November 2021. Interestingly, this does not require anything more than your standard Netflix subscription, with all paid subscribers gaining access to the full catalogue of mobile games, available on iOS and Android. For 2023, Netflix is betting big on its gaming service, with major expansion plans to build on its existing catalogue, and is working with developers such as Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp, to bring 40 new titles to the service.

New releases on Netflix Games in 2023 and beyond

The global streaming platform recently announced that it is planning to bring 40 new games to its platform in 2023. As of now, the service has launched 55 games since November 2021, and has a total of 70 games in development with external partners. Notable among these are Terra Nil, a reverse city-builder which will be launching on March 28, and Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace from Ubisoft, which will release on April 18. Assassin’s Creed fans can also expect a mobile game from the franchise to come to Netflix games soon.

Monument Valley 1 and 2 are confirmed to be coming to Netflix Games in 2024

Unlike some of Netflix’s earlier titles such as Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game and Narcos: Cartel Wars Unlimited which are based on existing Netflix titles, many of the upcoming games are not in any way linked to movies or TV shows on the streaming platform. Netflix hopes to establish itself a major games publisher for mobile platforms, and is not really limiting itself to using its games as extensions to its existing streaming content, as per Leanne Loombe, Vice President of External Games at Netflix.

Notably, the games service is also planning to bring existing premium titles under its subscription banner. Netflix is working with UsTwo Games to bring Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 to its service in 2024. All of this will see Netflix go up against established players in the gaming subscription space such as Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass, but with the notable advantage on being available on both iOS and Android.

How does Netflix Games work?

Netflix Games are accessible as regular apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and are installed on your smartphone or tablet independent of the Netflix app. That said, you can use the Netflix app on iOS or Android to find games, and you’ll be redirected to the app marketplace to download the app. As of now, the Netflix app does not let you play any of the games within it, and is only used to help you discover titles of interest.

While the game apps themselves are free to download, you do need an active Netflix subscription to actually be able to access and play the games. If you’re logged in on the Netflix app on the same device, this process is seamless, with the game working normally using your existing credentials.

Importantly, Netflix Games features premium games that are fully unlocked and can be played for free within the subscription service; there are no in-app purchases beyond the actual cost of the Netflix subscription in any of the games, similar to how Apple and Google operate their subscription-based gaming services.

For now, Netflix Games are limited to mobile platforms. However, the company has confirmed that it is working on its own cloud gaming service, which could then bring its games onto many more devices beyond smartphones and tablets. This is still some time away, and Netflix has confirmed that its immediate plans for gaming will remain focused on mobile platforms.

Google Has Created Digital Data Hegemony, CCI Alleges Before NCLAT

Fair trade regulator CCI on Thursday alleged that Google has created a digital data hegemony and called for a market space with “free, fair and open competition”.

Concluding the arguments of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) before the appellate tribunal NCLAT in the Google matter, Additional Solicitor General N Venkataraman said a market with greater freedom for all players would be in total sync with principles of free competition rather than the ‘walled garden’ approach of the internet major.

On October 20 last year, the CCI slapped a penalty of Rs. 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices. The regulator had also ordered the internet major to cease and desist from various unfair business practices.

This ruling has been challenged before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).

On Thursday, Venkataraman submitted that Google had used its money-spinning search engine as the ‘castle’ and the rest of the other apps to play the defensive role of ‘moat’.

He also pointed out that the tying of apps had enabled Google to use its dominant position in one relevant market to enter into and protect other relevant markets.

In his submissions, Venkataraman mentioned that large data gateways like GST and UPI, which has data on crores of persons and entities, are run for the public good by public institutions.

However, when it comes to private entities, engaging in a digital business where there is a steady unstoppable flow of data and traffic, the same gets resourcefully calibrated to the sole benefit of these entities. The competition law is one important pillar in the democratisation of data and in achieving the objective of the greatest good for the greatest number, he argued.

The NCLAT started its hearing in the Android matter on February 15, following a direction of the Supreme Court. The apex court had directed the NCLAT to decide the appeal by March 31.

On January 4, a separate bench of the NCLAT issued a notice over Google’s plea, directing it to pay 10 per cent of the Rs. 1,337 crore penalty imposed by the CCI. It had declined to stay the CCI order and put the matter for a final hearing on April 3, 2023.

This was challenged by Google before the Supreme Court, which also declined to stay the CCI order but directed the NCLAT to decide on Google’s appeal by March 31.

Indus Battle Royale Game Adds Olympic Pistol Shooter Heena Sidhu as a Playable Character

Pune-based developer SuperGaming has partnered with Olympic pistol shooter Heena Sidhu to bring her likeness to its upcoming Indo-futuristic battle royale game Indus. The athlete will soon appear as an in-game character Heena, whose backstory is described to form an important part of Indus’ lore, establishing her as a living legend among the folk. For the uninitiated, in April 2014, Sidhu became the first Indian pistol shooter to achieve the number-one world ranking, bestowed upon her by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

“I was surprised to see an Indian game studio take so much care and attention to detail, especially in terms of shooting and gunplay and how all of it translates into Indus,” Sidhu said in a prepared statement. “It’s something I noticed as an athlete and an avid gamer, which made collaborating with SuperGaming all the more easier.” The new character Heena has, in fact, been teased quite openly in most of Indus’ promotional material, sporting a scouter on her left eye and some wing-like blades protruding from her back.

SuperGaming claims that her lore isn’t dissimilar from Sidhu in real life, who had to break away from stereotypes to fully realise her passion for shooting. Her backstory isn’t entirely clear, but a SuperGaming spokesperson suggested that she’s best comparable to Robin Hood for her village — a hero among the needy.

Indus also revealed Mor-Ni, another new entry to its wide roster, who is revered as a folk hero amongst the Yaksha, an intelligent race of beings. As the name suggests, her appearance resembles that of a peacock — appropriate headgear paired with a purple-blue combo, in terms of clothing and makeup. Both characters will be available in Indus at launch.

As mentioned in a previous report, Indus is not a class-based shooter like Overwatch. So while all Mythwalkers appear differently designed, they are not equipped with any special skills, for the time being. “Players will definitely get to see our own interesting take on augmenting players with some special abilities on the plains of Virlok, sometime after the launch,” a SuperGaming spokesperson said.

The company held its third community playtest event late last month, which added new skins, weapons, quality-of-life improvements to the map and mini-map, customisable controls, and the ability to slide around the map. Indus has you step into the shoes of a Mythwalker, a hired gun working for the COVEN, an intergalactic syndicate that seeks a mysterious rare mineral called Cosmium.

In classic battle-royale fashion, gamers will be dropped onto the floating island of Virlok to scavenge for supplies, kill anyone who stands in their way, and come out as the last player standing. Alternatively, players can wait until the Cosmium spawns in a random spot on the map and snag it to end the match instantly.

Pre-registration for Indus is now live on the Google Play Store. PC and console versions are expected in the future.

Google Calls CCI Fine Over Mobile App Distribution ‘Unfair Imposition’

Tech giant Google on Friday submitted before the NCLAT that there was “unfair imposition” by the competition watchdog CCI over its mobile app distribution agreement with device makers as it does not restrict from installing other apps, including that of rivals.

A two-member NCLAT bench headed by Chairperson Justice Ashok Bhushan on Friday said it will start day-to-day hearing of the matter from February 23, the next date of hearing.

Google while arguing its matter before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) said that the placement of its apps on devices through pre-installation under MADA (Mobile Application Distribution Agreement) is not “unfair” as there is no restriction from installing other apps and enough space is available for them.

The appellate tribunal was hearing a plea filed by Google against Rs. 1,337 crore penalty imposed by the fair trade regulator CCI for abusing its dominant position in relation to Android mobile devices.

Under MADA, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are required to have Google Mobile Suite (GMS) while installing the Android OS of Google. This cannot be uninstalled.

Senior Advocate Arun Kathpalia, representing the global IT major said its apps, which are merely pre-installed “does not translate into dominance”.

There is no embargo on pre-installation on other apps and Android users can download apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter from its Play Store as per their choice. In 2021, 26 billion downloads of apps were recorded.

Moreover, contrary to this, OEMs are also happy with GMS as they said these apps make their products more sellable, Kathpalia added.

“Where is the harm to the OEM and users in this?,” he said adding CCI’s order reflects “unfairness”.

It is not charging any royalty and is ensuring a healthy ecosystem, said Kathpalia. He further said Google does not has a closed system like Apple.

“There is huge competition within the Android ecosystem,” he added.

On October 20 last year, CCI slapped a penalty of Rs. 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices. In the October ruling, CCI had also ordered the internet major to cease and desist from various unfair business practices.

NCLAT, an appellate authority over the orders passed by CCI, had started its hearing in the Android matter on February 15, following a direction of the Supreme Court. The apex court had directed NCLAT to decide the appeal by March 31.

Earlier, a separate bench of NCLAT had on January 4 issued notice over Google’s plea, directing it to pay 10 percent of the Rs.

Android 14 May Allow Some Phones to Be Used As Webcams: Report

Google has been supporting external USB cameras in its mobile operating system, Android, since Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. This means that users have been able to plug a webcam into their phone or tablet for video calls for quite some time now. Third-party applications have also made it possible for users to connect their device to a computer and use it as a webcam, however, Google seems to be taking this a step further by incorporating this feature as an inbuilt feature of Android.

Mishaal Rahman, an Android expert, recently spotted code changes submitted to the AOSP Gerrit. These modifications indicate that Google is working on making the mobile device work as a webcam for PCs, Macs, or Chromebooks.

The new “DeviceAsWebcam” feature would allow the phone or tablet to recognise itself as a USB video device class, or UVC, which is the standard used by most USB webcams, making it compatible with majority of desktops and laptops. This is similar to what Apple did with its Continuity Camera, which allows iPhones to serve as webcams for Macs.

“Do note you’ll still need an app/service to send video data from the camera to the /dev/video* node for the host device to read from,” Rahman notes in one of his tweets. This app has to be a system app, which means that if Google does not create a generic Android-ready app, manufacturers will have to provide their own. The Camo app allows users to easily use their iOS or Android device as a webcam on a Windows or Mac computer.

Rahman adds, “The system property ‘ro.usb.uvc.enabled’ will be used to toggle UVC gadget functionality on Android devices. It’s only readable by system apps, and specifically the Settings app and USB gadget HAL will read it.”

Given that this has a similar name to the property used for USB mass storage mode, it’s possible that the system will let users quickly switch between PTP and MTP storage modes, USB tethering, MIDI, and ultimately this new webcam configuration using the alert that appears when you connect your phone to a computer.

Made-in-India Battle Royale ‘Indus’ Gameplay Trailer Revealed, Pre-Registrations Now Live on Android

Pune-based developer SuperGaming has dropped the gameplay trailer for its upcoming battle-royale title Indus, right in time for Republic Day. Pre-registrations are now live on Android, with signups on iOS and iPadOS to “follow soon.” The timing couldn’t be more appropriate since the company wears its “Made-in-India” tag with pride, incorporating a touch of Indian culture in the game via general architecture, nomenclature, and the lore surrounding the long-dormant titular planet, whose legends echo across the galaxy. The trailer sheds light on some gunplay, loot system, and key locations within the Virlok, the floating island map.

The footage in the Indus trailer is based on a pre-alpha build, so don’t be surprised to see some imperfections and an unpopulated arena. In it, you play as a Mythwalker, a hired gun working for the COVEN, an intergalactic syndicate, seeking to extract Cosmium — a rare, natural-born mineral that can alter space and time. Reminds me of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic Dune, a little bit. This lore aspect ties into the gameplay as well, where despite being a battle royale, one could even emerge victorious by simply claiming it when the time calls for it. The primary objective here is to collect Cosmium, which only spawns once during a play session. Skilled players can still go on a hunting spree to become the last man standing.

Indian Gaming Companies Request Government to Distinguish Between Real Money Games and Video Games

One thing to note from the Indus trailer is that while the characters have eccentric art design, no special skills are put on display. A SuperGaming spokesperson suggested that Indus isn’t a class-based hero shooter like Overwatch or Valorant, promising some changes in the future. “–players will definitely get to see our own interesting take on augmenting players with some special abilities on the plains of Virlok, sometime after the launch,” they stated. That said, I can see characters like Sir-Taj being a favourite pick, thanks to his slender hitbox and interesting character design — the character literally has the Taj Mahal’s dome for a head. For those who aren’t well-versed in Hindi, “sir” translates to head — a clever wordplay for the name. Then there’s Big Gaj, which as the name suggests, is fashioned after an elephant, sporting an imposing presence on-field.

As seen in the trailer, Indus will let you play in both first and third-person perspectives at launch, with the latter switching to an FPS mode briefly when aiming down sights. Players can expect a wall closing in on them akin to most battle royale games, and skill-based matchmaking and a ranking system are part of later development plans. And of course, bots/ AI enemies will be added in case Indus fails to populate servers in time. During the launch period, Indus will only offer solo queues, with team-based options to come later.

Indus will be free-to-play from launch day and feature in-game monetisation methods similar to other titles in the category, where one could purchase cosmetics and other in-game items from the store. Progression mechanics such as a battle pass system hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Indus runs on Unity as the base engine with an in-house “sandbox shooter tech stack” called the Indus Engine. The download size is estimated at around 500MB, though this might balloon as more content gets added. As for the required specs, SuperGaming claims the game will run fine on mobile devices with 4GB of RAM or more, and as long as your Android version is 6.0 and above.

Pre-registration for Indus is now live on the Google Play Store. PC and console versions are expected in the future.
