Reddit, Jack Dorsey’s Block Reveal Crypto Investment Details as Tech Firms Begin Experimenting With Web3

2023 brought the crypto sector face to face with regulatory and macro-economic challenges – that kept the price points of majority cryptocurrencies relatively low. Despite the volatility that the sector witnessed last year, several corporate firms did not lose hope on their crypto engagements. Social networking platform Reddit and Jack Dorsey’s fintech firm Block are two names that have recently disclosed information related to their BTC holdings and investments, which yielded profits for both.

The current crypto market cap stands close to $2 trillion (roughly Rs. 1,65,78,200 crore) with Bitcoin currently trading at $51,017 (roughly Rs. 42.2 lakh). The crypto sector has seen a rise in valuation so far in 2024. Bitcoin was trading at $43,064 (roughly Rs. 35.8 lakh) in December last year.

In fresh filings, both Reddit and Block have revealed their investments in BTC, ETH, and other cryptocurrencies.

Reddit

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Reddit said it has purchased Bitcoin and Ether from the excess cash it managed to save. While the platform has not exactly disclosed the exact worth of Bitcoins it purchased, the filing showed that Reddit had managed to hold $1.3 billion (roughly Rs. 10,778 crore) in cash by the time it wrapped up the 2023, a report by Coindesk said on Friday, February 23.

With this, Reddit has become one of the few companies alongside MicroStrategy and Tesla that has directly invested its cash holdings into purchasing BTC and ETH.

Block

Jack Dorsey, the founder and former CEO of Twitter (now X), disclosed his fintech firm Block’s fourth quarter earnings on Thursday. The filings noted that Block held 8,038 BTC which was worth $340 million (roughly Rs. 2,818 crore) on December 31, 2023. At present, the value of these tokens stands at $409 million (roughly Rs. 3,398 crore).

Dorsey also said that Block managed to churn $66 million (roughly Rs. 547 crore) through the sale of BTC tokens through its subsidiary, the Cash App – clocking a 90 percent increase from 2022.

“The year-over-year increase in Bitcoin revenue and gross profit was driven by an increase in the average market price of bitcoin as well as a benefit from the price appreciation of our bitcoin inventory during the quarter,” Block said in is filing as per a different report by Coindesk.

Crypto-focused merchant bank Galaxy Digital Holdings, crypto brokerage Voyager Digital, and Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital are among other firms that have investments in crypto.

Reddit to Draw Curtains on Crypto Based ‘Community Points’ Programme, Blames Stability Concerns

Reddit has decided to shut down its ‘Community Points’ initiative that it launched for its crypto-friendly users back in 2020. Citing stability concerns, the feature let Reddit users earn Ethereum rewards based on the up votes they got on contributing to a subreddit with insightful content or by volunteering to moderate the community. In an official announcement released on October 17, the social networking platform informed its users that its Community Points programme will be coming to an end on November 8.

“Part of why we’re winding down Community Points is because we’re able to scale several products that accomplish what the Community Points program was trying to accomplish, while being easier to adopt and understand. Though we saw some future opportunities for Community Points, there was no path to scale it broadly across the platform,” said Reddit’s official post.

The Ethereum-based ERC-20 tokens, that were rewarded to eligible Redditors, were extracted from the ‘Reddit Vault’, which is the platform’s own crypto wallet service.

Reddit’s crypto tokens MOON and BRICK have seen a sharp price decline since the news of community points being withdrawn broke on its blog. Meanwhile, a debate has started on X concerning Reddit’s decision among community members.

While some people on X are claiming that Reddit may have ‘rugged’ the investors of MOON and BRICK with this move, others are defending the platform saying that it makes sense for it to shut down features that are not performing as expected.

Reddit, as of now, has not addressed these claims.

“We still love the idea that inspired Community Points. Specifically, finding better ways to improve community governance and empower communities and contributions. Though the moderators and communities that supported Community Points have been incredible partners – as it’s evolved, the product is no longer set up to scale,” its announcement noted.

Reddit Drops ‘Retro Reimagined’ Collection of Digital Avatars Riding on Success of Previous NFTs

Reddit, currently riding on the success of its previously released NFTs, has made another splash in the digital collectibles market. The social networking platform has launched the fourth generation of its digital avatars created on the eco-friendly Polygon blockchain. The NFT collection has been named as ‘Retro Reimagined’. The avatars from this collection will feature Reddit’s official ‘Snoo’ alien mascot, reimagined by artists and creators in different kinds of apparels and moods.

“These avatars are limited edition, meaning a set number of each artist’s Collectible Avatars are available for purchase. This allows artists to be paid for every Avatar sold,” Reddit wrote in an official blog post, commenting on the development.

While Reddit has not disclosed how many NFTs will be part of this collection, it revealed the price points that are decided for the NFTs of the Retro Reimagined series. Each tokenised avatar from this collection will cost between $2.49 (roughly Rs. 205) and $199.99 (roughly Rs. 16 lakh).

In addition, the platform said that the collection showcases NFT designs from 100 independent artists. Some avatars are also inspired by popular NFT collections like Cool Cats.

Reddit community members have already begun showing their new avatars from the Retro Reimagined collection on Twitter.

Reddit was launched in June, 2005 in the US. At present, the platform is estimated to have 55.79 million daily active users and 1.660 billion monthly active users as of July 2023.

Its pivot towards Web3 happened when it introduced NFTs as “Collectible Avatars” on Polygon in July 2022 via free airdrops and early sales — getting people to engage with the collectibles.

Later in 2022, Reddit launched its own NFT marketplace. To shop from this online marketplace, people are required to set up a Reddit Vault Wallet to purchase and store NFTs.

By December last year, Reddit had reportedly garnered over 4.25 million total unique wallets and 3.9 million out of these wallets possessed at least a single Reddit NFT.

Since Reddit avatars are limited edition, they have been known to fetch substantial funds in resales for artists as well as holders.

As per a Decrypt report, around $33.6 million (roughly Rs. 275 crore) worth of the Reddit avatars have already been traded on secondary markets.

The platform, however, has announced come tweaks in the process via which people can purchase its NFTs.

“We learned a few things from the last drop, so we are launching GEN 4 with a few things that will impact your Shop experience. Captcha is now enabled for all Shop purchases, so please don’t forget to confirm that you are indeed not a (ro)bot. In order to promote a more equitable purchase experience, we are launching this drop with initial access. It means that for the first day of launch, your account age and other metrics will be taken into consideration and there will also be restrictions on how many Collectibles you can purchase at a time,” its blog noted.

iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max Users Complain About Horizontal lines on Display: Report

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max users are complaining about horizontal lines appearing on display after powering on their devices. As per user reports on Reddit and Apple’s community forum, a considerable number of users are finding green and yellow lines flashing across their iPhone screen when the device is being turned on. A few users say that Apple has clarified that the problem with flashing lines is not a hardware issue. Instead, Apple reportedly said that it is an iOS bug. Some iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max users claim that the issue started with iOS 16.2, while others state that it was present in older iOS 16 versions.

Some iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max users took to Reddit and Apple community forum to complain that their devices are showing horizontal lines across the screen when waking up from sleep or starting up. As per a Redditor, the colours and numbers of the horizontal lines vary, however, green and yellow lines are the most common. Some users claim that the glitch doesn’t happen every time. Another user says the lines had disappeared after a second.

The issue is said to have started following the iOS 16.2 update, while others claim that they have seen flashing lines on the screen in previous iOS 16 builds.

Some Reddit users say that they have taken their higher-end models of the iPhone 14 series to the Apple store and have been told that the issue is not a result of a hardware fault but is a bug in iOS. Few claim that the issue persisted after booting their smartphones and updating the device to iOS 16.2.

Apple is aware of the ongoing issue. The company’s Support team earlier this week tweeted asking affected users for more details about the problem and what version of iOS their devices are running.

Affected users have also checked for a workaround to fix the problem from their end. Some say that turning off the Always On Display feature has helped them to resolve this issue. Some iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max users have reported that resetting the device also works.

A user who goes by the name Cab1X, citing an Apple engineer, claims that the problem will be addressed in an upcoming iOS 16.2.1 update. Gadgets 360 has also reached out to Apple for a comment on the matter and will update this story when the company responds.

Last week, the Cupertino giant released the iOS 16.2 update with Apple Music Sing feature, Freeform collaboration app, and Apple’s Advanced Data Protection. The update also enables 5G network support on compatible iPhones for users in India.

Apple launched the iPad Pro (2022) and the iPad (2022) alongside the new Apple TV this week. We discuss the company’s latest products, along with our review of the iPhone 14 Pro on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

My dog groomer must get ‘consent’ from my pooch during haircuts — or else

That’s one ruff client.

A Reddit user who claims to be a dog groomer shared an email allegedly from a picky woman looking to get her “rare” dog groomed for the first time.

“My name is Susan and I am looking for a groomer for my dog who can groom him in the non-confrontational manner I believe is best for him,” began the note, which recently resurfaced as it made the rounds on Reddit again.

“Dooley is an 18-month-old Bernowdoodle (if you are unfamiliar with the more rare doodle breeds, he is a Bernese mountain dog/chow/standard poodle) and this would be his first haircut as I have not found a groomer willing to work within the parameters I believe in.”

The picky client said she owned a rare kind of doodle breed.

Susan explained that Dooley’s hair was seven to eight inches long. She said she wanted one to two inches removed “all over.”

“While I’m sure any groomer could easily handle the haircut, I’m having difficulty finding a groomer willing to wait for him to consent to each part of the grooming,” she added.

“He will consent by maintaining eye contact with you while you are working, and if he looks away he is withdrawing his consent, and you will need to stop until he grants it again.”

As an added challenge, Susan demanded her pooch not be “leashed to a tub” or “forced into a cage” during the salon experience, as she does not believe in anything that could be “psychologically uncomfortable.”

The email was shared on Reddit, to much chagrin.

“Since I understand not everyone is as fluent in his language as I am I would prefer it if I stayed and supervised his grooming to make sure you don’t miss anything he is telling you,” she continued.

“Dooley will need a bath, blow dried, brush out (he might have a few small tangles but they will be easy to brush out) and a full standard doodle haircut.”

To top off the next-to-impossible request, Susan pushed for a tight time frame.

“My schedule is very busy so the appointment can only take a maximum of two hours,” she alleged.

“Based on the reviews I have read online, I do believe you are the perfect groomer for Dooley. Please advise me as to when the best time to bring him in would be.”

The client would not allow her pup to be “restrained” to a leash attached to the bathtub or a cage during the dog’s appointment.

Some Reddit users rolled their eyes at the paws-itively particular request. One Redditor even claimed to know the alleged groomer, proclaiming the email is a “combination of a lot of clients she had, some of which I was even there for.”

“I remember the email she got about the dog that she would only be allowed to groom if she had the dog’s consent,” the user posted over the summer.

Other Redditors had a ball in the comments.

“Rarer doodle breeds is where I started groaning. Eye contact/consent is where I was having difficulty breathing,” one commenter yelped.

“Just reply ‘lol,’” another simply advised.

“As a canine behaviorist with a degree in canine behavior and 15 years experience working with reactive dogs…this is the type of owner that turns their dog into a mess,” one Dr. Dolittle offered. “I’ve had clients like this. They reinforce their dog’s insecurities.”

“I’m all for cooperative care, but if you’re going to do the whole eye contact/chin rest/whatever cue as consent thing, you’re going to have to do the grooming yourself,” another suggested.

“No groomer has time for that, or if they did, it would cost hundreds because they’d only be able to do one dog a day,” the user added.

My mother-in-law called me a ‘walrus’ at my baby shower

Charlotte’s* mother-in-law has always made comments about her weight. But Charlotte has always risen above the criticism, saying, “I love myself the way I am and I live by the motto, ‘Be you, everybody else is taken.”

But since she got pregnant, the criticism and clear messages about weight have become worse.

“When I visit she gives me the small plate, portion, cup even spoons. She also buys me small size clothes even though I’m in my second trimester and those clothes don’t fit,” she explained in a Reddit post.

Although she may have grown to expect fat shaming from her mother-in-law, Charlotte thought she might tone it down at her baby shower.

No such luck.

Mother-in-law fat shames pregnant mom-to-be

Charlotte’s sister-in-law was in charge of the shower and offered cake and juice to the guests. Her husband wouldn’t allow Charlotte’s sister to host because he claims she’s too obsessed with their baby.

“I got hungry from talking and got up for some cake. The second I put my hand on the cake, my mother-in-law grabbed my arm and said that I’d gained enough weight already and if I kept it up, her son would not be happy living with a ‘large walrus’.”

Charlotte was shocked. The comment was made in front of the entire party, and the mom-to-be didn’t know what to do.

“I put the cake down and grabbed my stuff and started walking. Her daughter stopped me saying I can’t leave mid-party and embarrass her like that. I told her to tell her mom to leave if she wanted me to stay but she said, ‘Are you crazy? She’s my mom. You want me to kick her out in front of everybody?’”

Charlotte left the house, called her mom and went home.

Charlotte’s husband was livid.

“He asked me to explain what I did at the baby shower and why. I told him what his mom did and he started ranting about how I f**ked this up over something so minor.”

Charlotte didn’t think it was minor. Not only did her mother-in-law call her names, she stopped her from eating.

“He said his mom meant well and that I needed to get rid of this ‘easily offended’ mindset immediately before I pass it down to our son.”

Charlotte’s husband demanded that she apologize to his family. Charlotte thought she deserved the apology.

Reddit community concerned for mom’s wellbeing

The Reddit community fully supported the mom, with many questioning the rationale behind starving a pregnant, hungry mother.

“If she’s hungry, the baby is hungry,” said one person.

“Any man that would allow his mother to verbally abuse and deny his wife food and then gaslight and berate his wife for standing up for herself, is a massively abusive asshole,” said another. “This is divorce territory now.”

Not only did the woman’s mother-in-law call her names like walrus, she also stopped her from eating.

Some people thought her husband’s reaction was a symptom of a greater problem.

“So your own sister wasn’t allowed to throw you a baby shower, which then caused your mom not to attend,” one person said. “Instead your husband allowed his sister to throw one, where your MIL bullied you. Is he trying to control you, isolate you from your family, or is this a once-off?”

“Be careful…. These people sound extremely toxic and dangerous,” said another. “Don’t let your DH manipulate you into isolation from your family.”

WhatsApp Bringing Voice Call Support to Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5: Reports

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out an Android beta build that adds voice call support to Wear OS 3 smartwatches. With the latest update, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the recently launched Galaxy Watch 5 users can attend WhatsApp voice calls from their wrist. The feature is reportedly enabled by default on WhatsApp for Android beta versions 2.22.19.11 and 2.22.19.12. WhatsApp’s logo could already display on calls to distinguish them from normal phone calls. Users with WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.19.11 or newer will get incoming call notifications from the app on their Wear OS 3 compatible Galaxy Watch.

As per user reports on Reddit, WhatsApp with its latest beta release now brings the ability to receive WhatsApp voice calls on Wear OS 3 smartwatches. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 running on Wear OS 3 are getting the feature.

As per a report by 9to5Google, WhatsApp for Android beta v2.22.19.12 is bringing the ability to receive WhatsApp voice calls on a connected Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. Though, some Reddit users have confirmed that the functionality is available on Galaxy Watch 4 with WhatsApp for Android beta v2.22.19.11.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 show a different UI for WhatsApp voice calls. As per screenshots shared on Reddit, WhatsApp’s logo is displayed under the contact details on calls originating from the instant messaging platform to differentiate it from normal calls. It is shown with Accept and Decline sliders. The Galaxy Watch 5 paired with the Google Pixel 6 smartphone is reportedly not showing the WhatsApp logo, meaning the UI is the same as regular calls.

The new functionality is currently exclusive to WhatsApp beta users and we may see a public rollout of this in the coming days, as per the report. The feature is expected to undergo changes before the final release.
