The Last of Us Season 2 Casts Kaitlyn Dever as Abby

The Last of Us season 2 has found its Abby in Kaitlyn Dever, confirming previous reports. In a tweet, HBO confirmed that the Booksmart star will be playing the second protagonist — some prefer seeing her as a villain — in the post-apocalyptic series, posing a new challenge to Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey). Interestingly, Dever had a prior connection to the show when fans lobbied the studio to cast her as the 13-year-old Ellie, due to her facial resemblance to the in-game character and her involvement in the Uncharted 4 game — also from developer Naughty Dog. However, co-creator Neil Druckmann and the team opted for a younger actor in Ramsey, who in my opinion, nailed the role.

“Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin said in a prepared statement (via Variety). “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.” Abby Anderson is a very divisive character in the Last of Us universe, drawing hatred from a section of fans due to her actions in The Last of Us Part II and her muscular build, which sparked a spate of body-shaming comments. The outrage went so far that Laura Bailey, the voice actor who helmed Abby, received death threats for her role. With the backlash to the game and the character in mind, one can only hope that Dever doesn’t have to deal with similar hateful comments if and when the Abby discourse is brought up again.

The Last of Us Season 1 Review

Dever previously received praise for her performances in the Emmy-nominated Dopesick and the Hulu alien invasion movie No One Will Save You, in which she played a silent protagonist for the most part. In The Last of Us season 2, which adapts the events from the gory and polarising sequel The Last of Us Part 2, she’ll have a pivotal scene with Pedro Pascal’s Joel that leaves a lasting impact on the story. Pacal, meanwhile, has got Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel on top of his priority list; every other production will have to work around that schedule. This could also be attributed to the likely lesser screen time for the actor in the second season, where the focus is on the revenge arc between Ellie and Abby — the game intercut between the two characters to offer differing perspectives as they often trod the same paths.

Filming on The Last of Us season 2 was delayed due to the Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike last year. The new season was greenlit merely two episodes into the debut chapter, and given the length and the ambitious scope of the video game sequel, the studio has enough material to adapt for multiple seasons. That’s what Mazin and Druckmann plan on doing with the story, having mapped out the entire affair with a slew of planned new characters in the mix. Last week, The Last of Us season 1 bagged eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, including an Outstanding Guest Actress award for Storm Reid and Outstanding Best Actor for Nick Offerman, who appeared in episode 3.

The Last of Us season 2 is set to begin filming in the American Spring and premieres sometime in 2025 on HBO.

The Last of Us Season 2 Will Reportedly Begin Filming in January 2024

The Last of Us season 2 will reportedly begin filming in early 2024. As per the FTIA production list, the second chapter is slated to shoot from January 7, 2024, onwards. The shooting schedule was delayed due to the Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strikes — both of which have ended now. Considering the show was not mentioned in HBO’s 2024 slate, we can assume it will be out sometime in 2025 at the soonest. This is a bit off course from what lead Bella Ramsey — who played Ellie in season 1suggested, at a time when there were murmurs of a potential strike. It goes without saying that the series will adapt the events from the gory and polarising sequel, The Last of Us Part II, with plans for the arc from the video game to play out for longer than a season.

It didn’t take long for HBO to greenlight The Last of Us season 2, with the announcement dropping merely 2 episodes into the debut chapter. There’s clearly a large fanbase for it and given the length and the ambitious scope of the sequel game, the studio has enough material to adapt for multiple seasons. Lead writer Craig Mazin confirmed in an interview that the team had mapped out ‘all of season 2,’ in addition to sending in the episode 1 script to HBO just before the writers’ strike began. He helmed the show with Neil Druckmann, creator of the original 2013 game, who claimed that he had no plans of recasting Ramsey since he found her portrayal of Ellie to be the ideal one. The Last of Us Part II is a longer story that explores cyclical violence, futility of revenge, and forgiveness even when consumed by relentless rage.

Think of the Kansas City arc from The Last of Us season 1 but on a broader scale with no time to breathe. “There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical. There are things that are going to be added and enriched,” Mazin said in an interview, further hinting that we might get to see more action-oriented scenes with fungus-crazed zombies in the upcoming sequel.

A report from earlier this month suggested that leading man Pedro Pascal — who played Joel — has got Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 as his top priority project, indicating that all other productions will have to work around that schedule. Any delays to that film could subsequently cause issues with filming The Last of Us season 2 — it’s not like The Mandalorian, where he can simply send in voiceovers while the physical performance can be taken over by someone else.

The Last of Us Part II also introduced a buff new character named Abby Anderson, who served as the antagonist for the game. Understandably, Mazin, Druckmann, and HBO have been hunting for an actress to portray the same, with an undisclosed pick made sometime in August. An InSneider report now claims that HBO is in talks with Kaitlyn Dever, best known for Booksmart and No One Will Save You, for the role. Earlier this week, The Last of Us season 1 was nominated for Best Adaptation in The Game Awards 2023, in addition to 24 Emmy nods, earlier this year.

Currently, there’s no release window for The Last of Us season 2.

The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey to Star in Period Drama ‘Monstrous Beauty’

Fresh off their starring role in HBO’s ‘The Last of Us‘, actor Bella Ramsay has found their next big project in period drama movie ‘Monstrous Beauty’. Actor Romola Garai, best known for starring in ‘Atonement’ and ‘The Hour’, has written the script and will also direct the movie, reported entertainment news outlet Deadline.

Ramsey, who is non-binary and prefers they/them pronouns, will play the role of an aspiring playwright in the court of King Charles II who suffers from a rare condition that means she is entirely covered in hair. The story combines fiction with real historical characters.

The movie will also feature Dominic West as King Charles II, Ruth Negga as his mistress Nell Gwyn, and Fiona Shaw as Aphra Ben, the first ever published female playwright in history. The movie, which will begin filming in September, will be produced by Matthew James Wilkinson for Stigma Films.

Ramsey shot to fame after playing the role of Lyanna Mormont in the HBO fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones‘. The actor most recently essayed the role of Ellie in HBO’s series adaptation of popular video game ‘The Last of Us‘ alongside Pedro Pascal.

The hit HBO show is also confirmed to return for a second season, which will be based on the sequel video game, The Last of Us Part II. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have said that the events of the game could be spread across more than one season. Ramsey recently made an appearance on the The Jonathan Ross show and confirmed that the second season of The Last of Us will begin shooting “at the end of this year, beginning of next.” Pedro Pascal, co-lead on the show alongside Ramsey, had also hinted at the same earlier, saying that production on season 2 might begin in 2023.

Pedro Pascal’s ‘violent’ coffee order goes viral

Pedro Pascal’s delightful encounter with a fan has gone viral on TikTok, but not just because he’s being an absolute sweetheart.

In the clip, the US-Chilean actor, 47, can be seen happily chatting with a fan on the street, before signing an autograph on an action figure from his hit Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

But a closer look at the wholesome exchange reveals a ghastly detail about The Last Of Us star. That is, his Starbucks coffee order.

Look, we all have our own tastes when it comes to coffee. An extra shot, oat milk, half a Stevia.

But Pascal’s choice of brew is … Rare.

Pedro Pascal’s “violent” coffee order has gone viral.

Zooming into the video, it becomes evident Pascal opts for six shots in his Venti-sized cup.

According to heathline.com, one shot of espresso is typically around 30–50ml, and contains roughly 63 mg of caffeine. Now, healthdirect.gov.au states it’s generally safe for adults to consume around 400mg a day, so Pascal is not veering into dangerous territory with his morning beverage (although he’s close).

Still, his decision to have six shots in a single cup has horrified the masses on social media, who took to the comments section of the video with concerns.

The actor ordered 6 shots of espresso.

“That is a violent amount of coffee,” wrote one user.

“Dude must have an iron gut,” said another.

“Daddy needs his coffee every morning to carry the entire world and a fandom on his shoulders,” said a third, referencing Pascal’s large fanbase. “OUR MAN IS CAFFEINATED,” another wrote.

It’s understandable why Pascal would need to be caffeinated to such a degree at the moment. The Game of Thrones actor is everywhere on streaming right now, with season three of The Mandalorian dropping earlier this month.

HBO’s video game adaptation The Last Of Us has proved a smash hit among fans, becoming one of the only shows to become a roaring success off the back of a popular video game.

Pascal plays the titular character Joel Miller, with fellow GoT alum Bella Ramsey co-starring as Ellie.

The Last Of Us Behind-the-Scenes Featurette to Air After March 13 Season Finale

Ahead of the season finale of The Last Of Us which is set to air on March 12 (March 13 in India), the show has announced that the ninth episode with be followed by a behind-the-scenes featurette on the show titled Making Of The Last Of Us. The show, based on the popular 2013 video game of the same name, is close to the end of its critically acclaimed and successful first season run, which is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar in India (for now).

As per a tweet by the official handle for The Last Of Us (the handle for the HBO TV series), the behind-the-scenes featurette will air immediately after the end of the ninth and final episode of the first season of The Last Of Us on March 12 in the US. In India, the ninth episode will be available to stream at 8:30am on March 13 on Disney+ Hotstar, as usual.

There is no word on whether the Making Of The Last Of Us featurette will be available to watch in India on Hotstar as of now, but it could just drop in the ‘Trailers and More’ section of the title, so fans should keep an eye out for it. The Last of Us has already been renewed for a second season.

The tweet from the show’s handle also comes with a short video clip showcasing some of the filming techniques, CGI tricks, and interviews with key figures attached to the show such as lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. It also showcases many of the ‘infected’ in full make-up and costume, so fans will likely enjoy this sneak peek into the makings of the popular series.

Notably, Disney+ Hotstar announced that it will no longer play host to HBO content, which includes The Last Of Us, from March 31. The HBO catalogue has been on Hotstar since the launch of the service in 2015, with shows such as Game Of Thrones serving as a big draw to bring in early users to the then new streaming service.

Fortunately for fans of The Last Of Us, Hotstar will remain the streaming platform for the show till the end of the first season and for a few days beyond the final episode airing, although those hoping to watch the soon-to-release fourth season of Succession are left without any easy options, for now.

The Last of Us Episode 8 Trailer: Troy Baker’s Cannibalistic Gang Is on the Hunt for Ellie and Joel

The Last of Us episode 8 trailer is out. Keeping with the trend, HBO has dropped a preview for the upcoming episode of the post-apocalyptic drama based on the beloved PlayStation video game, teasing a group of cannibalistic survivors who come to Ellie and Joel’s aid, but with ulterior motives. Titled ‘When We Are in Need,’ this new episode stars Troy Baker — the original voice actor for Joel — as James, a senior member of the said group of settlers. Episode 8 reportedly clocks in at 51 minutes and is directed by Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider). The Last of Us episode 8 premieres March 6 at 8:30am IST/ March 5 at 9pm ET on Disney+ Hotstar and HBO Max, respectively.

The trailer for The Last of Us episode 8 brings us back to the present, where Joel (Pedro Pascal) struggles to recover from his near-fatal injury. “You won’t survive for long out there,” David (Scott Shepherd), the settler’s leader tells Ellie (Bella Ramsey), having tracked his way into their safe house. “There’s room for you in our group, if you want.” Being a cannibal, David’s group has a deceiving front — one that is god-fearing and willing to help anyone at a moment’s notice. Of course, our protagonists aren’t aware of that, and Ellie being an untrusting person kept refusing his advances either way. “I don’t mean to question your sense of mercy, David. She’s just another mouth to feed,” James (Baker) tells David, who is adamant about forcing her into their group. Episode 6 saw our pair of heroes scouring through the university for any signs of the Fireflies, which ended with an encounter with a weird group of survivors — one of whom injured Joel. As it turns out, they were part of David’s gang.

Now David understands the promise Ellie and Joel have, and sees them as a worthy addition to their group. “The others want to kill you. Let me protect you,” he tells Ellie in confidence, who was presumably captured and taken to their base — if we’re going by the video game’s series of events. The Last of Us episode 8 trailer also shows the scene where Ellie, now adept at hunting, shoots down a deer, which she offers in exchange with one of the survivors for a syringe and a bottle of penicillin. The events depicted in the trailer also raise the question of whether The Last of Us episode 8 will also feature Ashley Johnson as Anna, Ellie’s biological mother. For the uninitiated, she voiced and provided motion capture for Ellie in the original video game.

Reports from earlier this month suggested that HBO content, including The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, Euphoria, and more, is set to leave the Disney+ Hotstar platform in India, owing to some ‘restructuring plans’ laid out by the returning Disney CEO Bob Iger. Currently, there is no word on the platform the HBO content would move to, once the plans are put into motion, though Amazon Prime Video is being seen as the frontrunner to gain the streaming rights.

HBO also announced in January that The Last of Us series has been renewed for a second season and that it will follow the events of the polarising gory sequel, The Last of Us Part II video game. Showrunner Craig Mazin also suggested that season 2 could be a split into two parts, given how much bigger and more complicated the story was.

New episodes of The Last of Us stream every Monday on Disney+ Hotstar, at 8:30am in India, and Sunday at 9pm ET on HBO Max wherever available. Season 1 is stated to have nine episodes, of which seven have released thus far.

Disney+ Hotstar January 2023: Taaza Khabar, The Menu, The Last of Us, and More

Disney+ Hotstar has announced a list of 29 movies and web series for release on its streaming platform in January 2023. Well, to be precise, there’s only one film in the mix, which heads to streaming, following a brief stint in theatres — The Menu. In it, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult travel to a coastal island to dine at an exclusive restaurant, where the acclaimed Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some horrifying surprises. The Menu releases January 4 on Disney+ Hotstar. Follow that up with a healthy serving of the live-action adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation video game, The Last of Us, which sees Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey venturing into the infected, post-apocalyptic America, in search of answers. Episode one releases January 16 on the platform — reportedly 85 minutes long — after which the remaining eight episodes follow a weekly release cycle.

Popular YouTuber Bhuvan Bam headlines the Indian catalogue for Disney+ Hotstar in January 2023, with a comedy-drama series. Taaza Khabar follows a Mumbai-based sanitation worker, whose poverty-stricken life turns upside-down upon receiving some surreal powers. With new goals to accomplish and equally hard-hitting karma, all episodes will be available to stream on January 6. That should do for Indian releases this month, with even the lengthy Aashiqana season 2 ending its run in December.

From the galaxy far, far away, we’ve got Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which returns for its sophomore run, as our friendly troopers navigate the empire after the fall of the Republic. The first two episodes drop on January 4, followed by a weekly schedule. After that, check out Japan’s serene surf culture in the episodic documentary, Chasing Waves, which captures the culture and tension leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Starring real-life pro surfers, including the 2021 Olympic Silver medallist Kanoa Igarashi, all eight episodes will be up for streaming on January 11, on Disney+ Hotstar.

If anime is your jam, get ready for Tokyo Revengers season 2, which adapts the Christmas Showdown arc, resuming at the point where lead Takemichi Hanagaki and Chifuyu Matsuno got shot by Tetta Kisaki, the top-ranking official of the Tokyo Manji Gang. Season 2 is also expected to introduce new characters, as we head into battle against the 10th Generation Black Dragon. Tokyo Revengers season 2 episodes drop on a weekly schedule, starting January 8. While Detective Conan’s main arc is still a long way from finishing, why not delve into a live-action drama adaptation of The Files Of Young Kindaichi? This new, reimagined series features 10 select episodes, giving the original 1995 series a “contemporary perspective.”

Will Trent is another new addition to Disney+ Hotstar this month, which highlights the abandonment issues of the eponymous special agent (Ramón Rodríguez), as he navigates through life to earn the highest case clearance rate. The series premieres January 4, with the remaining six episodes coming in the following weeks. Those looking for some fresh American cartoons to watch — because The Simpsons did everything first — check out Koala Man, which seems to draw heavy inspiration from the likes of James Gunn’s Super, albeit not as grounded. In it, an Australian family man lives a not-so-secret identity as the Koala Man, snuffing out petty crimes as a vigilante, despite being incredibly bad at it. Michael Cusack (Smiling Friends) voices Kevin/ Koala Man, while Sarah Snook (Succession) breathes life into his tired wife Vicky. Koala Man premieres January 10 on the platform.

The 53 Most Anticipated Movies of 2023

Beyond that, there’s Hulu’s Extraordinary, a world where everyone develops superpowers at the age of 18, except for our 25-year-old lead Jen (Máiréad Tyers). Her insecurities about being left behind are amplified by her dead-end job and her occasional hook-up, who has no plans of committing any time soon. Will the tiny bit of hope help Jen find her “maybe superpower”? Find out when all eight episodes of Extraordinary become available to stream on January 25, on Disney+ Hotstar. Meanwhile, thriller fanatics can tune into The Watchful Eye on January 31, in which a young woman, hired as a live-in nanny for a wealthy family, observes the deadly secrets of its members.

Seeing as there are no new specials from Disney or Marvel this month — besides Willow’s continued run — all that’s remaining are some Korean and Japanese dramas. Lovers turn into political enemies in Bloody Heart, a fictional Joseon Dynasty-set drama, where the emperor Lee Tae and queen Yoo Jeong are forced to abandon their affection for each other. New episodes drop every Wednesday and Thursday, starting January 18. There’s a treat for K-pop fans as well in Super Junior: The Last Man Standing, a docu-series that captures the boy bands’ story from their early days. All episodes stream on January 18.

In addition to the aforementioned two — Tokyo Revengers season 2 and The Files of Young Kindaichi — Japan has one more Disney+ offering. In Lost Man Found, Saturo Matsudo (Taiga Nakano), an aspiring actor moves to Tokyo hoping to fulfil his dream, struggling through poverty and trouble breaking into the show business. All that changes one day when he stumbles upon a flight ticket belonging to a talent agency CEO. New episodes stream every week, starting January 25.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Trailer: No Helmet, Mandalorian No More

The Mandalorian season 3 teaser trailer is here. At Disney’s D23 Expo 2022, Lucasfilm unveiled the first trailer from the upcoming third season of the Pedro Pascal-led Star Wars series. Pascal was on stage at D23 alongside cast members Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Emily Swallow (The Armorer), Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), and Amy Sedaris (Peli Motto), and The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni. The first The Mandalorian season 3 trailer is full of action and a tease at Mando’s continued adventures with Grogu/ Baby Yoda, after they were reunited in The Book of Boba Fett. Also, The Mandalorian season 3 has seemingly been delayed.

“This is the one you saved?” The Armorer (Swallow) says via voiceover at the start of the first The Mandalorian season 3 trailer, as we are shown shots from season 2 before switching to present day. “You are as its father. A clan… of two.” As the Mandalorian heads into new adventures, The Armorer’s voiceover continues: “But you have removed your helmet. Then you are a Mandalorian no more.” In another glimpse at an action scene, we see the Mandalorian’s new spaceship — created in The Book of Boba Fett — being chased by a pack.

Elsewhere in the first The Mandalorian season 3 trailer, Bo-Katan has some choice words for the Mandalorian after he goes to see her: “Your cult fractured our people. Where were you then?” As a bunch of Bo-Katan-affiliated Mandalorians head on a mission — the shot of them dropping out of a spaceship is very cool — one of them asks Grogu: “Did you think your dad was the only Mandalorian?” I’m guessing Baby Yoda is confused by how everyone around him roams around in helmets?

The last 30 seconds of The Mandalorian season 3 teaser trailer brings back the scientist Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi), as well as Mando’s friend and bounty hunter guild leader Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) who’s dressed in some kind of royal attire as he meets with a bunch of suspicious individuals. And is that a 3PO-series protocol droid I see behind Greef? The first The Mandalorian season 3 trailer ends with a shot of Peli Motto (Sedaris), more action scene snippets, and Grogu witnessing fireworks.

The Mandalorian season 3 is coming in 2023 on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar. Given we had previously been told of a February 2023 release window, the lack of a month in the trailer suggests a delay. With Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 set for January 2023, I suppose it makes sense that Lucasfilm wouldn’t want two Star Wars series to collide with each other.
