Daniel Radcliffe Says He’s ‘Definitely Not Seeking’ a Cameo in Max’s Harry Potter TV Series: Report

Daniel Radcliffe is stated to be fine with not returning in Max’s upcoming TV series adaptation of Harry Potter, even in a cameo role. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the British actor, known for playing ‘The Boy Who Lived’ in the eight-film-long franchise, confirmed that he’s not actively seeking a role in the show, adding that he’s quite “excited to have that torch passed.” Warner Bros. Discovery ordered a decade-long series adaptation of the controversial author J.K. Rowling’s books in April, which will feature an entirely new cast. Rowling will executive produce the series, which is rumoured to premiere sometime in 2025 or 2026.

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Radcliffe said in the interview. “So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.” Radcliffe’s comments on cameo appearances do hold some weight, with modern blockbusters oftentimes including past actors for nostalgia purposes or simply to drive older audiences to theatres. The Ezra Miller-led The Flash is a good example of that, with the film using multiversal shenanigans as an excuse to carry out somewhat illogical fan service, instead of telling a coherent story.

The Wizarding World on the big screen was originally planned to continue with five films in the Fantastic Beasts series, but development seems to be in a state of limbo after the third one — Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore — possibly due to the latest film’s lacklustre reception. As for the planned Harry Potter Max series, each of Rowling’s seven novels will be adapted into a single season of television, trying to recapture the same magic as Warner Bros’ movies did 25 years ago, albeit tailored for a new generation. The story largely follows the titular 11-year-old orphaned boy, who upon learning that he’s a wizard is whisked away on a whimsical journey to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to harness his magical powers and learn the truth behind his biological parents’ death.

Since his stint in the Harry Potter films, lead Radcliffe has appeared in a bunch of theatre plays and movies in absurd roles — even playing a washed-up zombie in Oscar-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man. He will next be seen in the fourth season of TBS’ anthology comedy series ‘Miracle Workers’ as wasteland warrior Sid, navigating a fictional dystopia called Boomtown. Geraldine Viswanathan (Bad Education) co-stars in it as a ruthless warlord, coming to terms with the existential terms of married life and small-town living.

The Harry Potter series is allegedly eyeing a release sometime in 2025–26, exclusively on Max.

Avatar: The Way of Water Disney+ Hotstar OTT Release Date in India Set for June 7

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to release June 7 on Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, and Max (wherever available). The much-anticipated sci-fi sequel from James Cameron, transporting you back to the exotic lands of Pandora, will arrive a whopping 173 days after its theatrical release on December 16 worldwide. That’s almost a half-year gap between release to streaming — Disney had implemented a minimum 45-day window before movies become available on its streaming platform, Disney+. This time, the film will also be available to stream on HBO Max — soon to be ‘Max’ on May 26 — owing to an unusual streaming agreement production company 20th Century Fox made with Warner Bros.

In India — over on Disney+ HotstarAvatar 2 will be up for streaming in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, there is no mention of an IMAX Enhanced version, which would expand the aspect ratio, resulting in more picture on screen. That said, a 4K Ultra-HD version with Dolby Vision/ Atmos can be purchased as VOD on Apple TV, which also includes Spanish subtitles. The movie clocks in at 3 hours and 12 minutes, and currently takes the no. 3 position among the highest-grossing movies of all time, besting Cameron’s own 1997 disaster romance film, Titanic. Avatar 2 made $2.319 billion (about Rs. 19,064 crore) at the worldwide box office.

It would also seem strange for a major release as such to premiere on two streaming platforms at the same time. This has to do with the timing of the deal 20th Century Studios struck with Warner Bros. The former — under the title ‘20th Century Fox‘ — did not have a streaming platform or owner, and therefore, signed a contract to collectively stream its movies exclusively on HBO Max and Disney’s services such as Disney+ and Hulu. Even now that the studio is owned by Disney, it has to honour its deal with WB for Avatar 2 — or rather, for half of the studio’s titles through the 2022 release year.

Set 15 years after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as parents to five kids, thriving in the lush forests of the moon planet Pandora. A resurrected Recombinant Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and other ‘Sky People’ bring a new challenge for the family, who is forced to flee and seek help from the shoreline-dwelling Metkayina clan, who teach them the ways of the water and help prepare for the upcoming battle. The film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, in addition to being nominated in the Best Picture category. Cameron also previously alluded to introducing the fire culture of natives in Avatar 3.

Avatar: The Way of Water is out June 7 on Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, and HBO Max wherever available. In India, the film will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Warner Bros Discovery Unveils Revamped ‘Max’ Streaming Service, Launching May 23

Warner Bros Discovery on Wednesday said it will launch on May 23 its long-awaited new streaming service, christened “Max”, combining HBO Max’s scripted entertainment with Discovery’s reality shows.

The service will seek to expand its reach beyond devotees of HBO’s acclaimed and edgy shows by incorporating unscripted fare and children’s programming.

It also will mine the studio’s rich content library to produce high-profile programming, including a new series based on the Harry Potter books by author JK Rowling, and another prequel to popular fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Warner Bros, Walt Disney and other media companies are seeking to strike the right balance between spending on fresh programming to attract and retain subscribers and turning a profit.

Shares in Warner Bros Discovery closed down nearly 6 percent, part of a broader decline in streaming stocks after critical remarks from renowned investor Warren Buffett.

“It’s not really a very good business,” Buffett said on CNBC television. While people working in entertainment “make lots of money, the shareholders really haven’t done that great over time”.

Buffett is an investor in Paramount Global, which dropped 3 percent on Wednesday. Disney fell 2.5 percent and Netflix was down 2 percent.

The new “Max” service will serve as a test of CEO David Zaslav’s ambition to create one of the world’s leading streaming services by assembling a collection of disparate assets, from the Barefoot Contessa cooking show to Batman.

“This is our time, this is our chance,” Zaslav said during a presentation held on the Warner studio lot in Burbank, California. “I feel like for our company, this is our rendezvous with destiny.”

Prices for Max would range $9.99 (roughly Rs. 820) a month for the ad-supported version to $19.99 (roughly Rs. 1,640) a month for “Max Ultimate” for the ad-free tier with four concurrent streams. One tier would retain the current HBO Max pricing of $15.99 (roughly Rs. 1,310) a month – a strategy that won praise from one media analyst.

“By keeping the pricing the same, except for the new premium tier, there’s no reason for anybody to churn off,” said Bank of America media analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich. “For the same price you’re getting multiples of content.”

Zaslav said HBO’s “one-of-a-kind storytelling” would bring subscribers to the service while Discovery’s unscripted programming would keep them.

Warner Bros Discovery eliminated “HBO” from the name of the streaming service, which for some viewers connotes bespoke series but repels others.

Global streaming chief JB Perrette said, “HBO is HBO” and it “should not be pushed to the breaking point” by taking on a wide variety of content offered by HBO and Discovery.

“We look to go broader,” Perrette said, “And we think we can compete with the biggest players in the space.”

The service will feature HBO content including multiple Emmy award-winning drama series Succession and hit video-game adaptation The Last of Us.

New titles

It will also have several new titles based on popular franchises, including The Penguin, a series based on the DC Comics villain, a new comedy series derived from the hit CBS show The Big Bang Theory, and a new installment in the Fixer Upper home improvement franchise, Fixer Upper: The Hotel.

CEO Zaslav has said Warner Bros films would enjoy a traditional theatrical release and reap box office proceeds before becoming available on the streaming service.

The opportunity to better capitalize on the streaming video revolution was one of the justifications for the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia in 2022.

But by the time the deal closed in April last year, Wall Street’s enthusiasm for streaming had begun to wane, as Netflix reported its first loss of subscribers in more than a decade. Investors began prioritizing profits over subscriber gains, ushering in a new frugality across Hollywood.

Like other media companies, Warner Bros Discovery has yet to turn a profit on its HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services, though the company has reduced losses from them.

It has set a subscriber goal of 130 million by 2025, well below Netflix’s 231 million subscribers.

The Last Of Us Behind-the-Scenes Featurette to Air After March 13 Season Finale

Ahead of the season finale of The Last Of Us which is set to air on March 12 (March 13 in India), the show has announced that the ninth episode with be followed by a behind-the-scenes featurette on the show titled Making Of The Last Of Us. The show, based on the popular 2013 video game of the same name, is close to the end of its critically acclaimed and successful first season run, which is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar in India (for now).

As per a tweet by the official handle for The Last Of Us (the handle for the HBO TV series), the behind-the-scenes featurette will air immediately after the end of the ninth and final episode of the first season of The Last Of Us on March 12 in the US. In India, the ninth episode will be available to stream at 8:30am on March 13 on Disney+ Hotstar, as usual.

There is no word on whether the Making Of The Last Of Us featurette will be available to watch in India on Hotstar as of now, but it could just drop in the ‘Trailers and More’ section of the title, so fans should keep an eye out for it. The Last of Us has already been renewed for a second season.

The tweet from the show’s handle also comes with a short video clip showcasing some of the filming techniques, CGI tricks, and interviews with key figures attached to the show such as lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. It also showcases many of the ‘infected’ in full make-up and costume, so fans will likely enjoy this sneak peek into the makings of the popular series.

Notably, Disney+ Hotstar announced that it will no longer play host to HBO content, which includes The Last Of Us, from March 31. The HBO catalogue has been on Hotstar since the launch of the service in 2015, with shows such as Game Of Thrones serving as a big draw to bring in early users to the then new streaming service.

Fortunately for fans of The Last Of Us, Hotstar will remain the streaming platform for the show till the end of the first season and for a few days beyond the final episode airing, although those hoping to watch the soon-to-release fourth season of Succession are left without any easy options, for now.

The Last of Us Episode 8 Trailer: Troy Baker’s Cannibalistic Gang Is on the Hunt for Ellie and Joel

The Last of Us episode 8 trailer is out. Keeping with the trend, HBO has dropped a preview for the upcoming episode of the post-apocalyptic drama based on the beloved PlayStation video game, teasing a group of cannibalistic survivors who come to Ellie and Joel’s aid, but with ulterior motives. Titled ‘When We Are in Need,’ this new episode stars Troy Baker — the original voice actor for Joel — as James, a senior member of the said group of settlers. Episode 8 reportedly clocks in at 51 minutes and is directed by Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider). The Last of Us episode 8 premieres March 6 at 8:30am IST/ March 5 at 9pm ET on Disney+ Hotstar and HBO Max, respectively.

The trailer for The Last of Us episode 8 brings us back to the present, where Joel (Pedro Pascal) struggles to recover from his near-fatal injury. “You won’t survive for long out there,” David (Scott Shepherd), the settler’s leader tells Ellie (Bella Ramsey), having tracked his way into their safe house. “There’s room for you in our group, if you want.” Being a cannibal, David’s group has a deceiving front — one that is god-fearing and willing to help anyone at a moment’s notice. Of course, our protagonists aren’t aware of that, and Ellie being an untrusting person kept refusing his advances either way. “I don’t mean to question your sense of mercy, David. She’s just another mouth to feed,” James (Baker) tells David, who is adamant about forcing her into their group. Episode 6 saw our pair of heroes scouring through the university for any signs of the Fireflies, which ended with an encounter with a weird group of survivors — one of whom injured Joel. As it turns out, they were part of David’s gang.

Now David understands the promise Ellie and Joel have, and sees them as a worthy addition to their group. “The others want to kill you. Let me protect you,” he tells Ellie in confidence, who was presumably captured and taken to their base — if we’re going by the video game’s series of events. The Last of Us episode 8 trailer also shows the scene where Ellie, now adept at hunting, shoots down a deer, which she offers in exchange with one of the survivors for a syringe and a bottle of penicillin. The events depicted in the trailer also raise the question of whether The Last of Us episode 8 will also feature Ashley Johnson as Anna, Ellie’s biological mother. For the uninitiated, she voiced and provided motion capture for Ellie in the original video game.

Reports from earlier this month suggested that HBO content, including The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, Euphoria, and more, is set to leave the Disney+ Hotstar platform in India, owing to some ‘restructuring plans’ laid out by the returning Disney CEO Bob Iger. Currently, there is no word on the platform the HBO content would move to, once the plans are put into motion, though Amazon Prime Video is being seen as the frontrunner to gain the streaming rights.

HBO also announced in January that The Last of Us series has been renewed for a second season and that it will follow the events of the polarising gory sequel, The Last of Us Part II video game. Showrunner Craig Mazin also suggested that season 2 could be a split into two parts, given how much bigger and more complicated the story was.

New episodes of The Last of Us stream every Monday on Disney+ Hotstar, at 8:30am in India, and Sunday at 9pm ET on HBO Max wherever available. Season 1 is stated to have nine episodes, of which seven have released thus far.

Sarah Jessica Parker teases John Corbett’s return to ‘And Just Like That’

This is bigger than Big.

Sarah Jessica Parker has teased John Corbett’s long-awaited return to “And Just Like That.”

The show follows Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt navigating NYC life in their 50s, without Samantha Jones and Mr. Big, who died in the show’s first episode.

In a joint Instagram post with the reboot’s official account, SJP — who plays hopeless romantic Carrie in the “Sex and the City” spinoff — can be seen strutting down the streets of NYC with her former on-screen love, Corbett — who plays Aidan Shaw.

“Shh. Don’t tell anyone,” the caption reads.

The pair are notably holding hands, hinting at a possible rekindling of romance between their characters.

Carrie and Aidan share an extensive history in the original show, which was later revisited in the second “Sex and the City” movie, released in 2010.

Last year, Entertainment Tonight reported that SJP finally confirmed Corbett would be coming back to reboot for its second season.

The confirmation saw fans breathe a collective sigh of relief after Corbett lied about appearing in the spinoff’s first season in an April 2021 interview with Page Six.

Corbett and Parker played Aidan Shaw and Carrie Bradshaw, respectively.
Craig Blankenhorn

“I’m going to do the show,” he told us at the time, claiming he was “very excited” and would be in “quite a few” episodes.

It soon turned out that Corbett’s character did not actually appear in the reboot, leaving many fans disappointed and angry at the casual remark.

The HBO Max series stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis — and the much-buzzed-about absence of original series star Kim Cattrall.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King revealed to Variety the storyline of season 2 will feature the dearly missed PR guru.

King — who previously said the door isn’t open for Cattrall’s return — was asked last year if fans can expect to see Samantha’s back in the upcoming season, to which he answered, “Yes.”

While he chose to not divulge further, he did add that his goal “is to bring all the characters into the mix together so that they’re not so much on separate runways.”

“And Just Like That” also added several new big names to the “SATC” world, including Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, and Karen Pittman.

Season 1 ended with Miranda leaving NYC and moving to LA for Che Diaz. Meanwhile, Carrie shared a kiss with her handsome co-worker Franklyn (Ivan Hernandez).

In March, HBO Max announced the reboot was renewed for a second season.

Dune: The Sisterhood Casts Chernobyl’s Emily Watson, Harry Potter’s Shirley Henderson as Leads: Report

Dune: The Sisterhood has reportedly cast Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson as the two leads in the upcoming HBO Max series that serves as a prequel to the Oscar-winning movie. As per Variety, the pair will portray Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen respectively, the sisters who rose to power in a titular secret organisation, the Sisterhood. Years from then, it will grow into the more commonly known, fabled sect, the Bene Gesserit. Dune director Denis Villeneuve was attached to direct the pilot at one point, though now, he has sidelined himself as executive producer alongside Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote the 2021 film.

Based on the 2012 sci-fi novel Sisterhood of Dune, by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the upcoming HBO Max series is set 10,000 before the events of Dune. As per the official logline, Dune: The Sisterhood follows the aforementioned Harkonnen sisters, as they get involved in an underground organisation called the Sisterhood of Rossak, who train their bodies and mind to obtain superhuman powers, in a quest to save the future of mankind. The group eventually evolves into the enigmatic Bene Gesserit that we know now.

Diane Ademu-John (The Haunting of Bly Manor) and Alison Schapker (Westworld) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, with the former taking on additional duties as creator and head writer. Dune: The Sisterhood marks the second collaboration between lead Watson and filmmaker Johan Renck, who is attached to direct the first two episodes. The pair previously worked on the critically-acclaimed HBO miniseries, Chernobyl — streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Meanwhile, fantasy fans will be able to recognise Henderson as Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter films.

“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” Villeneuve said in a prepared statement in 2019, when the show was just greenlit at HBO Max. “Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.” Both Villeneuve and Spaihts had to eventually drop out from directing and writing roles, in order to focus on the mainline film, set in the same universe. Upon release, Dune grossed $401.8 million (about Rs. 3,276 crore) at the global box office, and bagged six Academy Awards.

A film sequel is currently in production, aiming for a November 2023 release window. Dune: Part Two was officially greenlit on October 26 last year, merely four days after the global release of Part One.

Dune: The Sisterhood currently does not have a tentative release date.

House of the Dragon Episode 8 Trailer: Struggle for Power Continues at Driftmark

House of the Dragon episode 8 trailer is out. HBO dropped a preview for next week’s episode of the Game of Thrones prequel series, which foreshadows the struggle for the Driftmark throne, following Lord Corlys Velaryon’s unspecified injury. Titled “The Lord of the Tides,” House of the Dragon episode 8 picks up a little after the scuffle at the mariner’s kingdom, which delivered fake deaths and the beginnings of conflict. House of the Dragon episode 8 premieres October 10 at 6:30am IST/ October 9 at 9pm ET on Disney+ Hotstar and HBO Max, respectively.

The trailer for House of the Dragon episode 8 kicks off with what seems like a minor time jump, putting Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) back in power as the Hand of the King. In light of King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) unexplained absence, he now assigns himself as the interim ruler. “As Hand, I speak with the King’s voice on this and all other matters,” he declares to the court. Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is clearly disturbed by the change in power, calling the Hightower family “vipers” who prepare to land their first blow, starting the next day. “To King’s Landing then,” Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) tells Rhaenyra — the pair reunited in the last episode, consummating their relationship with a kiss.

The two seem to be planning some kind of attack, with the events in episode 7 serving as the catalyst — Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Alicent’s second son, lost his eye during a scuffle at Driftmark. This made Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) bitter enemies, urging the latter to take a dagger up to the young culprits and exact revenge. The House of the Dragon episode 8 trailer then shifts focus to the mariner’s kingdom, where Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) aka the Sea Snake has taken a “grave wound,” putting him out of action. His brother Vaemond (Wilbert Charles Johnson), tempted by the opportunity, decides to make a claim for it.

“The crown cannot stand strong if the House of the Dragon remains divided,” Viserys utters in a voiceover, as the threat of war looms above. The closing moments of the House of the Dragon episode 8 trailer see Daemon examining a dragon egg, while Aemond orders an attack on Rhaenyra’s children, who’ve been coined as bastards, owing to their dark hair colouration.

New House of the Dragon episodes air every Monday at 6:30am IST on Disney+ Hotstar in India, and Sunday at 9pm ET on HBO Max wherever available. Season 1 consists of 10 episodes.
