Joe Douglas puts Lamar Jackson conversation to rest

PHOENIX — There has been some thought that the Jets should pivot to Lamar Jackson if things don’t work out with Aaron Rodgers or to put a scare into the Packers to make something happen.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas put an end to that discussion on Monday at the league meetings.

“First of all, Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player,” Douglas said. “But where we stand is it would be disingenuous and operating, negotiating in bad faith if we went down the path. Right now, we have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that.”

The Jets’ plan of course is to trade for Rodgers. Without saying specifically that’s the plan, Douglas said the Jets are not moving away from Plan A yet.

“We’re staying on our path that we’re on right now,” Douglas said. “We’re never going to operate in bad faith.”

The Ravens applied the franchise tag to Jackson, meaning teams are free to negotiate with him.

On Monday, Jackson revealed he has asked for a trade.

If he does switch teams, don’t count on the Jets being where he lands.

Jets coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Zach Wilson will be the team’s backup quarterback this season.

“He’s our No. 2,” Saleh said. “I really still think Zach has a future in this league to be a really good quarterback. He has the work ethic. He has the mindset. He’s coming in here to attack it. We’re counting on him to be a fixture here for a while.”

Douglas commented on last week’s trade of WR Elijah Moore to the Browns. The Jets sent Moore and a third-round pick to Cleveland for the Browns’ second-round pick.

“That was a tough decision because obviously Elijah is a really good player and a young player and on a cap-friendly deal,” Douglas said. “I think it was just a situation that came up where we had a flood of calls, nothing really serious. Cleveland was aggressive in their pursuit. Ultimately, we felt like this was an opportunity to bring value that we needed back to the team and back to the draft while also giving Elijah a great opportunity in Cleveland.”

Douglas provided a small update on where things stand with a contract extension for DT Quinnen Williams.

“There’s been a few conversations since I last spoke to you guys at the combine,” Douglas said. “I would say we’re in a positive place there. No exact timeline for when that’s going to get done but I’ve had good conversations with [agent] Nicole [Lynn] and still feel like that’s in a positive place.”

Jets trade Elijah Moore to Browns to help Aaron Rodgers trade

Elijah Moore got what he wished for … a little late, and the Jets got more ammunition for an Aaron Rodgers trade.

The Jets sent Moore to the Browns along with their third-round pick in next month’s NFL Draft for Cleveland’s second-round pick, according to a source.

The Jets now own picks No. 42 and 43 in the draft.

The question now becomes whether they will actually use both of those picks.

The Jets and the Packers are trying to hammer out a trade for Rodgers.

This gives them another second-round pick to play with.

The Jets may not have as much of a problem parting with a second-round pick if they have another one to use.

It has been speculated that the Jets would give up a second-round pick this year as part of the deal.

The trade came after the Jets agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent receiver Mecole Hardman.

That signing made Moore expendable as Hardman plays mostly in the slot just like Moore.

Moore, 22, gets a fresh start with the Browns after a disappointing and tumultuous 2022 season.

Moore caught just 37 passes for 446 yards and one touchdown last season.

In October, he requested a trade after growing frustrated with his lack of targets in the offense.

He had a blowup with former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur in practice and was sent home and was made inactive for a game.

The Jets drafted Moore in the second round of the 2021 Draft and he showed promise as a rookie with 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games.

But he struggled to develop chemistry with quarterback Zach Wilson and seemed to play better when other quarterbacks were in the game.

Jon Feliciano signing with 49ers, Giants now need new center

It was expected that the Giants would lose one of their experienced centers in free agency.

Now both are gone.

Jon Feliciano, who played in and started 15 games last season, agreed Monday to a one-year contract with the 49ers, The Post confirmed. He followed Nick Gates (three years, $16.5 million with the Commanders) out the door.

Feliciano’s departure comes as a surprise given that he followed general manager Joe Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson from the Bills to the Giants last offseason.

Feliciano expressed an interest in re-signing, and Schoen said before free agency opened that “you’ve really got to make sure that you don’t let a lot of leadership walk out of the building” in reference to Feliciano’s intangibles.

Ben Bredeson, who had a brief stint at center for the first time in his three-year career last season, is now the top in-house option, especially with the glut of young guards like Josh Ezeudu, Marcus McKethan, Jack Anderson and Shane Lemieux battling to play opposite Mark Glowinski.

The Giants could add a veteran starter like Ben Jones or Connor McGovern or look to a draft class led by Big Ten products Michael Schmitz, Olusegun Oluwatimi and Joe Tippman (or both options) to fill the hole.

Feliciano, 31, graded as the No. 31-ranked center out of 36 qualifiers by Pro Football Focus last season.

Quarterback Daniel Jones will have his fifth different primary center — Jon Halapio, Gates, Billy Price and Feliciano — in as many years when next season begins.

The Giants signed former Duke cornerback Leonard Johnson after he worked out on Monday, The Post confirmed.

Johnson, who had six interceptions in 42 games for the Blue Devils, suffered a torn ACL training for the 2022 draft and was out of the league last season after going undrafted.

He received a three-year contract with minimal guarantees, similar to the standard for an undrafted rookie.

Baker Mayfield lands with Buccaneers in NFL free agency

Baker Mayfield has a new home.

The 27-year-old quarterback is signing a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL free agency, according to multiple reports.

Mayfield now figures to be in the catbird seat to be Tom Brady’s successor after the future Hall of Famer retired for good this offseason.

The move also likely eliminates any possibility that Brady returns to Tampa Bay, as he did last year after announcing his retirement – slim as those chances may have been.

Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick with the Browns, has bounced around the league after four underwhelming seasons in Cleveland.

He was traded to the Carolina Panthers last offseason after the Browns landed Deshaun Watson, then was cut halfway through the season and resurfaced with the Los Angeles Rams.

Mayfield went 1-3 with the Rams, but head coach Sean McVay expressed interest in retaining him, either as a backup or a possible security blanket in case injured quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn’t recover properly ahead of the 2023 season.

Instead, Mayfield took a job with the Buccaneers, where he has a much greater chance of starting.

He will likely compete with Kyle Trask, whom Tampa Bay selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Mike White leaves Jets for Dolphins

Mike White is effin’ gone.

White, who started seven games at quarterback over the last two years for the Jets, agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $16 million with the Dolphins, a source confirmed.

White will back up Tua Tagovailoa in Miami.

For White, 27, this is a homecoming.

He grew up in Pembroke Pines, Fla., and attended South Florida University before transferring to Western Kentucky.

The Jets felt White was a quality backup and expressed some interest in bringing him back, but it did not make sense for them as they pursued a veteran quarterback that was going to cost a lot of money.

The team also has Zach Wilson on the roster.

White’s most memorable moment with the Jets came in 2021 when he started in place of an injured Wilson against the Bengals.

He threw for 405 yards and led the Jets to a stunning 34-31 upset of Cincinnati, which would go on to win the AFC.

The Hall of Fame asked for some pieces of his uniform to display from that game.

After the game, he was referred to as Mike “Effin” White by his teammates and became a folk hero.

White injured his arm in the Jets’ next game against the Colts and things fizzled out for him.

White became a starter again in late November after Wilson was benched.

White led the Jets to a win over the Bears but suffered broken ribs two weeks later in a loss to the Bills.

He missed two games before returning against the Seahawks in a game in which he never looked like himself.

The Jets liked White and he had a shot at grabbing the long-term starting job if he had not been injured.

Now, he will be on a rival.

Baltimore ice cream shop makes him a flavor

Here’s your new scoop on Lamar Jackson.

No, it’s not about his potential new contract, possible new team, or anything related to his play on the field or negotiations off of it.

It’s an actual scoop of ice cream, made to support him in search of a long-awaited new deal with the Ravens.

The Charmery, a Baltimore-based ice cream shop, has debuted a new flavor on their menu called “Pay Lamar,” which is essentially peanut butter and caramel ice cream with chocolate chips and roasted peanuts.

Think PAYDAY the candy bar — but with more of a confrontational connotation.

The Ravens placed a $32.416 million non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson earlier this week.

As a result, they’ll have until July 17 to reach a multi-year extension before that number becomes permanent for the 2023 season.

Under league rules, Jackson is free to negotiate with other teams, but his options could be thinning as the Carolina Panthers have traded up for the No. 1 overall pick and the Miami Dolphins exercised oft-injured signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option, which will pay him a fully guaranteed $23.4 million in 2024.

The Jets are looking for a quarterback, but they appear to be zeroed in on Aaron Rodgers.

The Charmery’s owner, and longtime Ravens fan, David Alima said that he and his friends “love Lamar [Jackson] and want to see him stay in Baltimore,” according to The Baltimore Banner.

“[Jackson] deserves every bit of money that he feels he deserves. Whatever he thinks he’s worth, I’m in agreement with him,” Alima added.

“I don’t proclaim to know the inside workings of the business,” continued Alima, who has owned The Charmery for over 10 years with his wife, Laura, according to the report.

“All I know is that Lamar is worth every single penny that he feels he’s deserved. That’s why I want to pay him.”

Eyes on Ravens, Lamar Jackson at NFL franchise tag deadline

The Ravens are firmly up against the clock.

As Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline looms for NFL teams to use the franchise tag on players, all eyes remain on Lamar Jackson.

Baltimore and Jackson were poised to continue to talk about a long-term deal right up to that deadline, Ravens executive vice president Ozzie Newsome told “The Bernie Kosar Show” on Monday.

But after over two years of trying to reach an agreement, all signs point to the franchise tag as a temporary resolution.

The superstar quarterback and the Ravens have been in talks for a lucrative contract extension each of the last two offseasons, but haven’t been able to reach common ground.

Head coach John Harbaugh and GM Eric DeCosta have made their intent for a long-term deal clear, but there’s seemingly still a large gap — particularly over guaranteed money — between the two sides.

If he’s tagged, Jackson will earn a guaranteed $32.4 million on a one-year deal.

Elsewhere, the Cowboys tagged breakout running back Tony Pollard after he recorded 1,007 rushing yards, 371 receiving yards, nine rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns. All were career-highs.

The tag will pay Pollard a guaranteed $10.09 million for one season.

After previously not picking up his fifth-year option, the Raiders officially tagged running back Josh Jacobs, who led the league in rushing yards and yards from scrimmage last year, on Monday.

He’ll earn the same $10.09 million for one season as Pollard, giving both their respective teams another season to weigh a long-term deal and prove their breakout seasons weren’t anomalies.

Polarizing ex-Giants tight end Evan Engram enjoyed his own career year with the Jaguars (73 catches for 766 yards, both career-highs).

In return, the Jaguars slapped the tag on him Monday, earning him $11.35 million guaranteed for one year.

The Commanders will continue to negotiate with star defensive tackle Daron Payne, but the team tagged him Monday.

If Washington doesn’t reach a long-term deal, Payne will earn $18.94 million guaranteed for one year.

As they try to sort out their salary cap, the Chiefs have decided not to franchise tag left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., which will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.

If the Giants reach an agreement for a long-term deal with Daniel Jones by the deadline, they will likely use the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley.

If they can’t reach a deal with Jones, they will be forced to use the tag on him, which will earn him the same $32.4 million as Jackson.

Bears general manager taking calls for No. 1 pick

INDIANAPOLIS — The top pick in the NFL draft is available to the highest bidder.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles, who is committed to third-year quarterback Justin Fields, has engaged in “starter conversations” with teams interested in moving up to No. 1.

The Texans, Colts, Raiders, Panthers and Falcons all own top-nine picks and are in the quarterback market, scouting Bryce Young, Will Levis, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson.

“Nothing specific about players, picks and all that,” Poles told reporters Tuesday at the NFL combine. “It’s just interest.”

First things first: The Bears have about $98.5 million in salary-cap space for free-agent shopping.

Even that wallet can’t fill all the needs on the roster, so a package of draft picks under affordable team control would accelerate the rebuild.

“It just depends how far back,” Poles said of trading. “But we need a lot, and that gives us more opportunity to bring in more players.”

The Bears’ plans puts pressure on the Texans, who hold the No. 2 pick and must decide whether to pay a premium to trade up one spot and secure their top prize or risk settling for their second-ranked quarterback.

The idea of getting jumped is harder to stomach if it’s the AFC South rival Colts moving up from No. 4.

“We’re not necessarily worried about what other teams are doing,” Texans GM Nick Caserio said. “You try to make decisions you feel are best for your team.”

Texans GM Nick Caserio
USA TODAY Sports

It’s a chance to even out history for the Bears, who traded two third-round picks and a fourth-round pick to swap picks from No. 3 to No. 2 (and select quarterback bust Mitch Trubisky) in 2017.

“We have a trade-chart simulator,” Caserio said. “The issue when you are trying to do a trade is your model says one thing and their model says another thing, so we are speaking two different languages. How do we find a resolution? That’s a little bit more of an exercise when we get into April.”

Neither Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll nor general manager John Schneider denied the recent report by The Athletic that quarterback Russell Wilson made a power play with ownership to get them fired before he was traded to the Broncos last offseason.

“Honestly, water under the bridge,” Schneider said.

The Seahawks, who went to the playoffs with free-agent-to-be Geno Smith, got the last laugh (and a boatload of draft picks, including No. 5 overall) as the Broncos were a disaster during Wilson’s career-worst year.

“With the guys that I’ve coached, I’m always going to hang with them, and I’m never going to leave them,” Carroll said. “Regardless of what has happened or things that have been said at all, if you hang with them, it all comes back around. I like to demonstrate that faith in the relationship and the depth of what we did together.”

Bills safety Jordan Poyer is a free agent and recently said that he would like to play in a state “that doesn’t take half my money,” referring to New York’s income taxes.

Asked about that comment, Bills GM Brandon Beane quipped, “Can you call Gov. [Kathy] Hochul and get mine reduced, too?”

The Eagles have 10 starters who are free agents.

Even for master salary-cap manipulator Howie Roseman, that’s too many to re-sign.

“We’re not capable of getting all those guys back,” the general manager said. “We also understand we’re in a good situation in terms of picks and we have a lot of guys under contract, not just for this year but going forward.

“It’s hard to make offers that’s not really in the range of what a player is going to get. Our players … and the success they’ve had, we’re just going to be honest with them on the range, and we understand that they’ve put themselves in this position.”

Jerry Jones sexual assault lawsuit revived after being dismissed

A sexual assault lawsuit against Jerry Jones that had previously been dismissed has been revived.

The Dallas Morning News reported that an appellate court in Texas ruled Monday that the suit should proceed. In February, the case had been dismissed by the Dallas County district court.

“We always knew we were going to win because the law was on our side,” the plaintiff’s attorney, Daniel Bowers, told the Dallas Morning News. “A victim’s finally going to get her day in court and that’s very important.”

The suit, which was originally filed in 2020 and alleged that an incident occurred at the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in 2018, claims that the Cowboys owner “kissed her on the mouth and forcibly grabbed her without her consent.”

The Cowboys are also defendants in the lawsuit, which claims the organization “knew or should have known of Jones’s misconduct.” The NFL was listed as a defendant in the original suit but is not named in the appeal.

Jones’ attorney did not immediately respond to a voicemail from the outlet.

In his response to the filing in court, Jones said that the allegations were “malicious and hurtful.”

The accuser goes by the initials J.G.; her identity is not otherwise known. In the suit, she claimed that she suffered “severe emotional distress” and “psychological pain and suffering.” She also said that she incurred medical expenses.

The suit was originally dismissed after a judge said that the plaintiff had a special exemptions order with which she failed to comply. Conversely, the appellate court said that the accuser “made a good faith attempt to amend her pleadings in response to the court’s special exceptions order …” and that “… the trial court abused its discretion in dismissing appellant’s claims.”

Jones is also facing a paternity suit from a woman named Alexandra Davis, who says she is his daughter. In December, Jones was ordered by a judge to take a paternity test.

On the Cowboys front, Jones announced earlier this offseason that Mike McCarthy will return for a fourth season as head coach despite a “sickening” 19-12 first-round playoff loss to the 49ers.

49ers’ Brock Purdy’s elbow surgery delayed due to swelling

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will not undergo right elbow surgery as planned on Wednesday due to continued swelling, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday night.

The determination reportedly was made Tuesday at Arlington, Texas, where Texas Rangers team physician Keith Meister was due to perform the operation the next day.

Purdy will meet again with Meister in early March to determine when the surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament will be done, per multiple media reports.

Purdy previously said he planned to undergo the type of surgery that would get him back on the field the quickest, which would involve an InternalBrace ligament augmentation. That procedure reportedly would require a six-month recovery period, as opposed to a longer period for a hybrid operation including a partial elbow reconstruction.

Six months from early March would be right at the start of the 2023 season, with the opening game scheduled for Sept. 7.

Brock Purdy
USA TODAY Sports

Purdy, 23, made a stunning rise from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the 49ers into the NFC Championship Game.

After 49ers quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo got injured in the regular season, Purdy took over and led the team to wins in each of the final five games. Purdy and the 49ers then defeated the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game when Purdy sustained the elbow injury.

After fourth-stringer Josh Johnson went down with a concussion against Philadelphia, Purdy returned to action but was unable to throw the ball more than a few yards downfield.

In the regular season, Purdy completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards with 13 scoring passes and four interceptions. In the postseason, he had a 65.1 percent completion rate while throwing for 569 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
