Odell Beckham Jr. won’t be making a Giants return, heads to Dolphins

Former New York Giants first-round pick Odell Beckham Jr. has found his home for the 2024 season. To no surprise, he will not be returning to the Meadowlands to reunite with the team that drafted him.

On Friday, it was announced that Beckham agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins, joining one of the strongest receiving corps in the league on a one-year deal.

Beckham will likely be the third receiver in Mike McDaniel’s offense behind star Tyreek Hill and emerging star Jaylen Waddle. In a spot where Beckham will be facing most team’s third-best cornerbacks, he can fly under the radar and contribute to the Dolphins’ offense.

Beckham, 31, is on the back nine of his career and really hasn’t been the same since he left the Giants. The Dolphins will be his third team in the last four years and with it being a one-year deal, he could be on to another in 2025.

There was a thought that this would be the year that Beckham would return to the Giants to play alongside fellow LSU product Malik Nabers, but there didn’t seem to be much interest from either side.

Giants clobbered by Dolphins, 31-16, in latest embarrassment

The New York Giants faced off against the dynamic Miami Dolphins down at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on Sunday afternoon in hopes of pulling off an upset that could rejuvenate their sagging season.

The Giants entered the game as 12.5-point underdogs to the Dolphins, who lead the NFL in offensive yards gained and total points through the first four weeks of the 2023 regular season.

The Giants played without Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) for the third straight week and were also missing left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder).

Needless to say, there was no upset and there was no rejuvenation. Instead, the Giants were smacked around and lost quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) in the process.

5 biggest storylines for Week 5

Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants spent a lot of energy increasing their team speed. That effort will be under scrutiny this week when they face the fleet Dolphins offense, which features wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as well as rookie running back De’Von Achane.

“Try to put our fastest guys out there and give them as good of looks as we can,” head coach Brian Daboll said when asked about his strategy.

“That’s what you do each week. So obviously, those two guys are lightning speed. But we’ve used all our receivers on the look team this week, guys that can run, and try to give them the best look we can.”

The New York Giants take on the Miami Dolphins this Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida and will do so shorthanded once again.

That was a bad omen and the worst-case scenario proved true as all three were listed as “out” for the Week 5 game.

Meanwhile, running back Saquon Barkley remained limited in practice and will be a game-time decision for the second consecutive week. It remains unlikely that he’ll play.

Giants’ Wink Martindale offers up all-time quote on playing Dolphins

The New York Giants will face off against the Miami Dolphins on the road this Sunday in a meeting between two teams that could not be more different.

The Dolphins (3-1) are averaging 37.5 points per game this season, the most in the NFL. The Giants are averaging just 11.5, the lowest in the league.

The Giants have scored just three points in their first two home games, the lowest total by an NFL team in 40 years. Miami leads the NFL with 2,044 total yards of offense this season, the most by a team in their first four games in NFL history.

The Dolphins’ high-powered offense has to have Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale worried. He was asked on Thursday his reaction to the Miami offense, which pinned 70 points on Denver two weeks ago.

“My wife called me last night before she went to bed,” Martindale said. “She said she was worried about me. She said, ‘Are you getting any sleep?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m sleeping like a baby; every two hours, I wake up and cry and go to the bathroom and try to go back and get some more sleep.’

“It’s unbelievable. But that’s where this league’s heading with some of the other scores. The points have been up pretty high. I told our guys, not the players, I told our staff because we’re all old enough to remember, ‘The Greatest Show on Turf.’ This is like that, 2023 supersonic. I mean, they are fast. Faster than that. That’s the whole thing that in preparing a team going into this environment, that’s not even turf there. It’s grass and they’re still faster.”

The Giants spent this offseason trying to upgrade their total team speed. Sunday afternoon will put that plan to the test. Martindale has already addressed the subject with his team and hopes that he can slow the Dolphins down.

“In this game, I told the defense, there’s going to be plays made. You’ve got to just have that mentality that’s like, ‘Here we go again.’ Let’s just try to get a stop,” he said. “Every play, let’s just try to get a stop. The more we can get them in third downs, the better off it is for us.”
