Poor coaching, late collapse doom Giants in 13-10 loss to Jets

The New York Giants hosted their MetLife co-tenants, the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon in a crucial Week 8 contest for both teams.

The Giants were again without starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who is still dealing with a neck injury. Backup Tyrod Taylor started in Jones’ absence for the third consecutive week but was forced to leave the game early due to injury.

The Giants also were without left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) for the seventh straight week but saw the return of center John Michael Schmitz.

The weather was less than perfect for football with temperatures in the 50s, overcast skies and a steady rain.

For a game that was so poorly played by both sides, it turned out to be one of the most entertaining contests of the season thus far. But Giants fans probably aren’t feeling that way right now given how things ended.

Let’s recap:

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT Final
Giants 3 0 0 7 0 10
Jets 7 0 0 3 3 13

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

  • Kicker Graham Gano missed two field goals, first from 47 yards and then from 35 yards out in the final minute. He is dealing with a knee injury that will require surgery at some point and perhaps the Giants should have tried to gain the first down on the second miss rather than have Gano kick.
  • The rib injury to Tyrod Taylor killed any chance the Giants had of opening up their offense in the second half. They were clearly wary of attempting any type of passing attack behind Tommy DeVito.
  • All game long, the talk was of the Jets’ ineptitude on third down. At one point, they were 0-11 and finished 2-15. What the real story was that the Giants were equally as bad, going 2-19 on third down.
  • The Giants were able to stay in the game with their rushing attacks, which ended up gaining 203 yards on the afternoon — their highest total of the season.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein kicked a 33-yard field goal with 6:12 in overtime to give the Jets a 13-10 victory.

The Giants had an opportunity to close the Jets out in the final minute of regulation but allowed the Jets to drive 58 yards in the final 24 seconds to tie the game at 10 with a 35-yard field goal.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

  • Saquon Barkley rushed 36 times for 128 yards, answering the call when the Giants needed him the most.
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux had three sacks for a total loss of 41 yards. He had nine combined tackles on the day and also forced a fumble. He has 8.5 sacks on the season with nine games remaining.
  • Bobby Okereke had another strong game with nine total tackles, three for a loss.

Tight end Darren Waller, who was questionable coming into the game, was taken out in the second quarter after aggravating his sore hamstring. He had one catch for four yards on two targets. His exit left the Giants with one active tight end (Daniel Bellinger).

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor was knocked out of the game midway through the second quarter after getting landed on trying to scramble out of bounds. He left the field in pain and ended up being evaluated at a local hospital with a rib injury. Tommy DeVito, the Giants’ third quarterback, relieved Taylor.

Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers on Monday afternoon before a few players are also made available.

Big Blue will return to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, November 5 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kickoff is 4:25 p.m. ET.

New York Giants’ Tyrod Taylor, Darren Waller injured vs. New York Jets

The New York Giants have been crippled by injury throughout the season and that trend continued in the first half against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Early in the second quarter, tight end Darren Waller suffered a reaggravation of a hamstring injury and was forced to leave the game. He was promptly ruled out.

Waller had been dealing with a hamstring issue for several weeks.

Only a few short series later, quarterback Tyrod Taylor went down along the sideline and had several Jets defenders land on him. It was clear he was in immediate pain and remained on the ground for quite some time.

When Taylor did finally get up, he sprinted to the sideline but collapsed again while holding his chest.

Giants trainers quickly rushed Taylor into the locker room as rookie Tommy DeVito assumed the starting role under center.

Quarterback Daniel Jones also remains sidelined, missing his third consecutive game as he recovers from a neck injury. The Giants are eyeing a potential Week 10 return.

More to come…

5 biggest storylines for Week 8

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will miss his third consecutive game due to a neck injury. Backup Tyrod Taylor will draw the start once again this week.

Jones’ condition has not allowed him to participate fully in practices. For the past two weeks, Jones has served as the scout team quarterback.

He is clearly week-to-week at this point, but his return is contingent on the medical team, whose diagnosis was not shared with the media by head coach Brian Daboll.

It is becoming clear Jones may not be the team’s future at quarterback. The Giants have to be frustrated with him, especially since the team has shown some progress in his absence.

New York Giants’ Deonte Banks wants revenge on Jets’ Garrett Wilson

It hasn’t just been four years since the New York Giants and New York Jets faced each other on the field, it’s also been four years since Giants cornerback Deonte Banks faced Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

In 2019, Banks was a student at the University of Maryland while Wilson attended The Ohio State University. The CB and WR stood opposite each other in Ohio Stadium, where the Buckeyes would trounce the Terps, 73-14.

On the way to that win, Wilson left Banks face-down in the end-zone after scoring. Ever since then, Banks has wanted revenge.

“He got me for sure [in 2019], but I wasn’t the same player I was in my second, third, or fourth year [of college],” Banks told NJ Advance Media. “So it’s cool. I wasn’t the player I am now anyway. [I’m] way more confident, way more physical. Just a whole different kid. And I wasn’t as locked in as I am.”

Banks vividly recalls that touchdown Wilson caught on him.

“I was bulls—,” he said of his coverage on the play. “I wasn’t locked in. I remember.”

Banks and Wilson didn’t meet again in college, so Sunday is the first shot Banks is going to get at defending Wilson again.

“I’m too excited,” he said. “I’ve been trying to play him [again] for a long time now.”

In a game that looks to be highly defensive, Banks will get his opportunity to prove to himself that he is capable of defending Garrett Wilson. The Giants hope he’s up to the task.

New York Giants’ Daniel Jones among two out vs. Jets in Week 8

The New York Giants will host the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Sunday and although they are getting healthier, will still be down several key players.

One of those players will be quarterback Daniel Jones, who will miss his third straight game due to a neck injury.

“I’d just say we are on this week, and we will see what happens next week,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. “He’s getting better. He’s getting better.

“He’s throwing, he feels better every day. He’s done a good job here of the things that he can do out here on the practice field and take it one day at a time. But he’s getting closer.”

Daboll refused to answer when asked if Jones would play again this season, reminding members of the media that he’s already addressed that. The coach previously said that DJ would play again this year.

This time, however, Daboll did not seem very affirmative. It’s a storyline to keep an eye on.

In addition to Jones, the Giants also ruled out running back Gary Brightwell.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Jets can be found below:

3 best player prop bets for Week 8

The New York Giants (2-5) are hosting the New York Jets (3-3) this Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Not much scoring is expected as the over/under has been hovering around 36.5 all week, per BetMGM.

There’s money to be made somewhere here but not on ‘sure’ bets. If you want to cash in, you’ll need to get creative and take a few leaps of faith.

Here are three prop bets that might pay off for you in this game, if you’re willing.

AP Photo/Frank Franklin II

The Giants’ defense has been excellent the past two games, allowing just 14 points to the Buffalo Bills and seven to Washington last week.

The Jets held the Philadelphia Eagles to 14 points last week.

Both teams are struggling offensively behind backup quarterbacks. The Giants will blitz Zach Wilson excessively and Tyrod Taylor is more of a ‘move the chains’ option than a big play one.

The Giants are averaging a league-low 12.1 points per game. The Jets are averaging 18.8.

If you can envision a 17-14 or less game, this is a solid play.

AP Photo/Adam Hunger

Breece Hall is a beast and the Giants aren’t going to fully contain him. Sure, you can bet on him having over a certain amount of yards in this game (the number is 68.5) but that is going to get you less than even money.

Hall has scored a touchdown in each of the past two games and is the Jets’ best option in the red zone and on the goal line.

The Giants are 27th against the rush and 21st in the red zone. They have been playing better as of late, but +600 is a nice price for a stud running back to open the scoring.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

After a slow start, the Giants are figuring out that they have a massive mismatch player in Darren Waller, especially in the red zone.

Waller began the season dealing with an injury but is now healthy-ish. He is also now playing with Tyrod Taylor at quarterback instead of Daniel Jones.

Taylor seems to look more for Waller in certain situations than Jones had been.

Waller scored last week and was interfered with in the end zone on the final play in Buffalo the week before, so he’s in play again this week against a Jets defense that is allowing the most fantasy points to tight ends this season.

3 causes for concern in Week 8

Elsa/Getty Images

After starting off 1-3, the Jets are riding a two-game winning streak.

Not only that, their last loss was against the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, where they went toe-to-toe with Kansas City on Sunday Night Football.

The Jets started the season with a win against the Buffalo Bills as well.

Between the Jets’ wins against the Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as their respectable loss against the Chiefs, they certainly have some impressive performances under their belt given their 3-3 start.

The Jets are not just coming off two straight wins, they are also well-rested after having a bye week last week.

Jets’ Randall Cobb fined for dirty hit on Giants’ Bobby McCain

From the very instant it happened, Aiyda Ghahramani, the wife of New York Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb, knew a fine was coming.

“That was a great block, I thought,” Ghahramani said laughing. “Probably get a fine here in the mail soon.”

Buy Giants Tickets

Although both Ghahramani and Cobb, who was laughing in the huddle with Aaron Rodgers, thought it was funny, New York Giants safety Bobby McCain had to exit the game with a concussion due to the dirty hit.

The NFL didn’t find the illegal hit, for which Cobb was penalized, nearly as funny as the Jets duo or Ghahramani. They slapped the veteran with a near-$14,000 fine for the outlawed blindside block late this week.

The hit led to an exchange between Rodgers and Giants linebacker Jihad Ward that has gone back and forth for nearly a week.

The two had to be separated during the game and that exchange was shown, in part, on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Despite video evidence, Rodgers claims Ward was lying when he said the quarterback and Cobb were laughing about the hit in the huddle.

“I think he’s making (expletive) up,” Rodgers said, via Connor Hughes of SNY.

The league office ultimately saw (and heard) what Ward did and decided to levy a fine on Cobb.

Neither Rodgers nor Ward were fined for their onfield exchange.
