Here’s how social media reacted

The New York Giants hosted the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday night. The final preseason game of 2023 was technically a home game for both teams as they share a stadium, but the Giants got to see their logo at midfield.

Always a chippy game, the Jets started strong, leading the game 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Giants also saw at least seven injuries throughout the game, including safety Bobby McCain (concussion) and offensive lineman Wyatt Davis, who was carted off with an air cast on his right leg.

Although Aaron Rodgers only played two series in his New York debut, the Jets still came away with the win.

Here is how X, formerly known as Twitter, reacted to the loss.

New York still belongs to Giants, not Jets

Throughout the summer, the New York Giants have been overshadowed by the hype surrounding the New York Jets.

Following Gang Green’s acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets have seemingly taken over New York. Or at least they have dominated the back pages and have drawn the most national attention.

Buy Giants Tickets

But does that mean New York is now a Jets town? Retired Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz certainly doesn’t think so.

Cruz appeared at the Giants’ facility this week to support his former teammate Prince Amukamara, who signed a one-day contract to retire a Giant. While there, Cruz was asked about the Jets overtaking the Giants in New York by adding Rodgers.

“He just brings the Jets to a little bit more relevancy than they’ve had in the past; we’ll leave it at that,” Cruz told the New York Post.

“I think the Giants are rooted too deeply around these parts. I think these couple of Super Bowl trophies, you see ’em here in the past 15, 20 years kind of say something, so … we’ll see how it unfolds with Aaron Rodgers at the helm these next couple of years.

“But this’ll be a Giants town forever.”

With Super Bowl hype surrounding the Jets, there has been a lot less talk about the Giants, whose roster is heavily improved roster thanks to general manager Joe Schoen.

Cruz, of course, made a name for himself in the 2010 preseason against the Jets. He was a key component in the Giants’ most recent Super Bowl run as the team’s leading receiver. His infamous 99-yard touchdown against the Jets on Christmas Eve in 2011 is etched in the memories of both Giants and Jets fans forever.

His comments come ahead of the 2023 preseason finale, where the two teams will square off at MetLife Stadium and Aaron Rodgers’ debut is expected.

The two teams will meet again in Week 8 of the regular season.

7 New York Giants to watch in Week 3 preseason game vs. Jets

Nic Antaya/Getty Images

If the Giants carry three quarterbacks, Tommy DeVito makes the roster. If they decide to go with only two, he’ll be waived and signed back to the practice squad.

This will happen no matter how well or poorly he plays in this game. The only issue here is the prospect of losing him to another team if he gets cut, but that means another team would probably have to add him to their 53-man roster, which is unlikely.

Either way, he’s fun to watch and will be up against a tough Jets defensive front.

MetLife Stadium, home of the Giants, ranked among NFL’s worst stadiums

The New York Giants and New York Jets call MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey home.

The venue is a far cry from the fading Giants Stadium that used to adorn the Meadowlands Sports Complex, one time known as The Swamp. But it also lacks the personality of its predecessor and provides almost no charm.

Buy Giants Tickets

In the eyes of Giants and Jets fans, MetLife Stadium is an overpriced lunchbox that’s as boring inside as it is outside.

To no surprise, NFL reporters for The Athletic recently ranked MetLife Stadium one of the worst venues in the NFL with 13 reporters listing it in the bottom-5 of the league.

25. MetLife Stadium

Teams: New York Giants, New York Jets

Seating capacity: 82,500

Google review: 4.5 stars

Despite it not being old, 13 ballots had it ranked as one of the five worst stadiums in the league.

“When MetLife was completed in 2010 it cost $1.6 billion,” Jets reporter Zack Rosenblatt wrote. “The money was not particularly well spent. It’s a boring stadium — which is something universally agreed on by both Giants and Jets fans, a rarity — both in look and feel. The food is poor. And it’s always a disaster exiting the stadium, especially for fans — and that gets even worse after concerts. There’s a mall nearby but otherwise it’s not exactly an exciting area, especially as the home base for two teams that are supposed to represent New York City.”

The parking lot traffic entering the game, and particularly the traffic exiting the game (including public transport), is an absolute nightmare.

As The Athletic mentions, MetLife Stadium has also had its issues with food and that’s not including the free medium Pepsi offer that applied only to season ticket holders a few years ago.

Some would also argue that the fans themselves are an issue.

Due to PSLs, the rising cost of a gameday experience, and the aforementioned traffic/public transportation issues, a large portion of those in the stands are wealthy businessmen and businesswomen who got tickets through different corporations. Casual fans call them the “down in front” crew.

Luckily, some of those issues have been alleviated under the combination of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, who have the fans standing, cheering, and actively engaged again.

Still, there’s no denying that MetLife Stadium is a boring old lunchbox. Or microwave. Take your pick.

Aaron Rodgers will make Jets debut vs. Giants in Week 3 of preseason

The New York Giants will close out the preseason against the New York Jets next Saturday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

It’s unlikely the Giants play many of their starters and if they do, it will only be for a series or two. And that’s good news for Big Blue because preseason games against the Jets often tend to result in the most injuries.

Buy Giants Tickets

There’s a reason for that, of course. The Jets always enter what was once dubbed “The Snoopy Bowl” far more eager than the Giants, who are just trying to get work in prior to the regular season.

For Gang Green, on the other hand, these preseason games represent an opportunity to steal the spotlight from their cross-town rivals. And with little else going on for them in recent decades, back page headlines have been difficult to come by.

Regardless of what happens during the Week 3 preseason game, the Jets will once again dominate the back page at the Giants’ expense.

Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will make his debut for the Jets next Saturday night.

Jets fans won’t have to wait until the regular season to see Aaron Rodgers make his debut.

The four-time MVP will make his first start as a Jet in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Giants, according to a source.

Rodgers has sat out the first three preseason games and the Jets have started Zach Wilson.

Now, Rodgers will take the field for the first time as a Jet in what should be a good atmosphere for a preseason game.

The Jets have avoided playing Rodgers this preseason but the door was always left open for him to see some action. But there’s no coincidence that will come against the Giants.

“I wouldn’t mind playing in the preseason,” Rodgers said early in camp. “I wouldn’t mind if Robert said, ‘Hey, we are going to go. Let’s do it.’ Most coaches have that fear where they want to get you to the Week 1 and not risk it, but I believe there is a chance for the last one.”

If rookie cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins see some action early in the game, it’ll be a true test of what they can expect to see at the NFL level.

Giants lent their practice field to the Bucs after Jets ghosted them

The New York Giants offered some hospitality to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, lending their practice field for a Thursday workout after the New York Jets bailed on their second day of joint practices.

According to Rick Stroud, the Jets backed out of their second joint practice with the Bucs earlier this week, leaving Tampa Bay in a bind. Luckily, the Giants — who had an off day Thursday — were gracious enough to lend their field.

Things got heated between the Bucs and Jets on Wednesday, which included several scuffles between the two teams. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked at least six times in a period of 10 dropbacks, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The Bucs and Jets will face off in their Week 2 preseason game Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.

Jets seven-round NFL Mock Draft 2.0: An Aaron Rodgers protector

We are inching closer to the 2023 NFL Draft.

In a little over two weeks, the Panthers will be on the clock and one of the best three-day periods in the sports calendar will commence.

The Jets enter this year’s draft with less needs than any draft in recent memory.

That is a testament to the roster that general manager Joe Douglas has built.

There are still positions that need work but the Jets should have more directions they can go this year than in the past few years.

We used the PFF mock draft simulator to help us out and here is what we came up with for the Jets 2023 Draft:

Round 1, No. 13 overall: TRADE

Sending the No. 13 pick to the Rams for a 2023 second-round pick (No. 36 overall), a 2023 third-round pick (No. 77 overall) and a 2024 first-round pick.

Previous Pick: Calijah Kancey, DT, Pitt

The top two offensive tackles were already drafted with Paris Johnson and Broderick Jones both going in the top 10.

Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a wild card for the Jets here, went a pick before we were on the clock.

AP

I considered Northwestern lineman Peter Skoronski but he is more of a guard than a tackle.

Without a lot of attractive options at 13, I decided to deal the pick.

Don’t kill me over the fairness of the trade.

The PFF simulator accepted the trade.

I dropped out of the first round but picked up a first-rounder next year and two Day 2 picks this year.

This gives us the flexibility to move back into the first round with the extra picks or sit tight.

Next year, we will have an extra first-round pick in case we need to move up to draft a quarterback if Aaron Rodgers is one and done with the Jets.

Round 2, No. 36 overall (acquired in trade with Rams): Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State

Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones.
Jose / Marinmedia.Org / Csm/Cal Sport Media/Sipa USA

After moving out of the first round, we take the best tackle still on the board.

Jones is a monster at 6-foot-8 and 374 pounds. His wingspan is 87 ¾ inches.

We can slot him in at right tackle and let Mekhi Becton and Duane Brown fight it out for the left tackle spot.

Protecting Aaron Rodgers is a priority and Jones will help the Jets do that.

Round 2, No. 42 overall: Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington State

Previous Pick: Luke Wypler, C, Ohio State

Henley is a repeat from last week, although we take him one spot higher this week. The Jets are not likely to keep both of their second-round picks. One is most likely going to be sent to the Packers in a deal for Rodgers. If they stay here, linebacker is a position that needs to be addressed. They need a third linebacker right now and C.J. Mosley is not going to play forever. It is time to start building depth at the position.

Round 2, No. 43 overall: Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Edge, Kansas State

Previous Pick: Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington State

You can’t have enough edge rushers.

Anudike-Uzomah had 20 ½ sacks in three seasons at Kansas State and can give the Jets some depth on the edge to go along with Carl Lawson, John Franklin-Myers, Jermaine Johnson and Micheal Clemons.

The Jets don’t need him to start right away but he can play special teams and become a starter later.

Round 3, No. 77 overall (acquired in trade with Rams): Nathaniel Dell, WR, Houston

Dell was a team captain at Houston, something the Jets love.

He is undersized at 5-8, 165 pounds but was highly productive in college.

He led FBS in receiving yards (1,398) and receiving touchdowns (17) in 2022.

He also can return punts.

Want to catch a game? The Jets schedule with links to buy tickets can be found here.

Round 4, No. 112 overall: Juice Scruggs, C, Penn State

Previous Pick: K.J. Henry, Edge, Clemson

This may be a little bit of a reach but the Jets need to add on the interior of the defensive line and I’m going to take a shot here with Scruggs.

He was a team captain at Penn State and started 17 games at center for the Nittany Lions over the past two years.

He won’t fix the Jets’ center issues right away but can be a backup for now.

Round 5, No. 143 overall: Kobie Turner, DT, Wake Forest

Previous Pick: Ronnie Hickman, S, Ohio State

Turner is an older prospect at 24 years old.

He played at Richmond, which is Douglas’ alma mater, before spending a post-graduate year at Wake Forest.

The Jets need depth on the interior of their defensive line.

It would be a surprise if they did not address it in this draft.

Round 6, No. 207 overall: Anthony Johnson Jr, S, Iowa State

Previous Pick: Aidan O’Connell, QB, Purdue

Johnson is known as a high-character player and is another team captain.

This late in the draft, the Jets can grab a good locker room guy who can contribute on special teams.

Odell Beckham, Jets have ‘informal’ chat at NFL meetings

PHOENIX — The NFL meetings had a surprise guest Tuesday: free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham, who lives in Arizona, dropped into the Arizona Biltmore — where most of the NFL owners, general managers and coaches are this week — and chatted up several GMs and coaches, including Jets head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas.

A source said the meeting was “very informal” and they just chatted in a courtyard at the hotel.

Beckham also spent time talking to Rams GM Les Snead and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski.

CBS Sports reported that Beckham has had a formal meeting with the Ravens.

The Jets have admitted they are interested in Beckham.

“I’ve had some productive conversations with Odell’s agent, Zeke Sandhu,” Douglas said Monday. “Odell is obviously a really talented player. He worked out for several teams a few weeks ago.

“We’ll see how that process plays out, but we have had conversations.”

Aaron Rodgers has said he would like to play with Beckham, and it is possible the two sides will end up making a deal at some point this offseason.

Beckham’s price may have to come down, however, before the Jets can do a deal with him.

Team owner Woody Johnson said the fact Beckham is even considering the Jets shows how improved they are as a team.

“The fact that Odell Beckham, a man of his character and the quality and his ability, would consider us and want to be with us if that’s what he wants is pretty much a compliment,” Johnson said.

Beckham was at the hotel for about an hour and was accompanied by his agent, Zeke Sandhu.

Douglas said on Monday that there was nothing scheduled with Beckham so his drop-in to the Biltmore may have been unexpected.

Joe Douglas puts Lamar Jackson conversation to rest

PHOENIX — There has been some thought that the Jets should pivot to Lamar Jackson if things don’t work out with Aaron Rodgers or to put a scare into the Packers to make something happen.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas put an end to that discussion on Monday at the league meetings.

“First of all, Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player,” Douglas said. “But where we stand is it would be disingenuous and operating, negotiating in bad faith if we went down the path. Right now, we have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that.”

The Jets’ plan of course is to trade for Rodgers. Without saying specifically that’s the plan, Douglas said the Jets are not moving away from Plan A yet.

“We’re staying on our path that we’re on right now,” Douglas said. “We’re never going to operate in bad faith.”

The Ravens applied the franchise tag to Jackson, meaning teams are free to negotiate with him.

On Monday, Jackson revealed he has asked for a trade.

If he does switch teams, don’t count on the Jets being where he lands.

Jets coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Zach Wilson will be the team’s backup quarterback this season.

“He’s our No. 2,” Saleh said. “I really still think Zach has a future in this league to be a really good quarterback. He has the work ethic. He has the mindset. He’s coming in here to attack it. We’re counting on him to be a fixture here for a while.”

Douglas commented on last week’s trade of WR Elijah Moore to the Browns. The Jets sent Moore and a third-round pick to Cleveland for the Browns’ second-round pick.

“That was a tough decision because obviously Elijah is a really good player and a young player and on a cap-friendly deal,” Douglas said. “I think it was just a situation that came up where we had a flood of calls, nothing really serious. Cleveland was aggressive in their pursuit. Ultimately, we felt like this was an opportunity to bring value that we needed back to the team and back to the draft while also giving Elijah a great opportunity in Cleveland.”

Douglas provided a small update on where things stand with a contract extension for DT Quinnen Williams.

“There’s been a few conversations since I last spoke to you guys at the combine,” Douglas said. “I would say we’re in a positive place there. No exact timeline for when that’s going to get done but I’ve had good conversations with [agent] Nicole [Lynn] and still feel like that’s in a positive place.”

Jets trade Elijah Moore to Browns to help Aaron Rodgers trade

Elijah Moore got what he wished for … a little late, and the Jets got more ammunition for an Aaron Rodgers trade.

The Jets sent Moore to the Browns along with their third-round pick in next month’s NFL Draft for Cleveland’s second-round pick, according to a source.

The Jets now own picks No. 42 and 43 in the draft.

The question now becomes whether they will actually use both of those picks.

The Jets and the Packers are trying to hammer out a trade for Rodgers.

This gives them another second-round pick to play with.

The Jets may not have as much of a problem parting with a second-round pick if they have another one to use.

It has been speculated that the Jets would give up a second-round pick this year as part of the deal.

The trade came after the Jets agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent receiver Mecole Hardman.

That signing made Moore expendable as Hardman plays mostly in the slot just like Moore.

Moore, 22, gets a fresh start with the Browns after a disappointing and tumultuous 2022 season.

Moore caught just 37 passes for 446 yards and one touchdown last season.

In October, he requested a trade after growing frustrated with his lack of targets in the offense.

He had a blowup with former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur in practice and was sent home and was made inactive for a game.

The Jets drafted Moore in the second round of the 2021 Draft and he showed promise as a rookie with 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games.

But he struggled to develop chemistry with quarterback Zach Wilson and seemed to play better when other quarterbacks were in the game.
