Giants place Evan Neal on season-ending IR, activate Matt Peart

The disappointing second season for New York Giants right tackle Evan Neal has officially come to an end.

The Giants announced on Sunday that Neal has been placed on injured reserve (IR) as the result of a sprained ankle that has kept him out in recent weeks.

Neal ends the season having appeared in just seven games (all starts) while compiling a Pro Football Focus grade of 39.8, which is dead last among all qualifying tackles.

Replacing Neal on the 53-man roster is offensive lineman Matt Peart, who was officially activated from IR just days after he was designated to return.

A third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Peart will now fill the role of backup to Tyre Phillips, who has taken over as the team’s starter in place of Neal.

The Giants have also elevated kicker Mason Crosby and linebacker Tomon Fox from the practice squad. It is the first elevation for both players.

Crosby was signed earlier this week to replace Cade York, who landed on IR with a quad injury. He was slated to fill in for Randy Bullock, who had replaced Graham Gano, each of whom are also on IR.

Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

The New York Giants enjoyed an off day on Friday with their final practice scheduled for Saturday ahead of a Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With most players away from team facilities, that meant little change in terms of injury status. However, the Giants still moved forward with a projected injury report.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a projected non-participant due to a hamstring issue that has plagued him for several weeks.

“He’s still working through his hamstring,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters this week.

Even with an extra day off this week, Sexy Dexy seems unlikely to suit up on Monday afternoon against the Eagles.

The Giants’ full (projected) Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee), OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Lawrence Cager (groin)

Limited participant: DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), RB Matt Breida (hamstring), LB Carter Coughlin (neck), P Jamie Gillan (groin), S Xavier McKinney (illness)

Full participant: OL Justin Pugh (calf/neck), TE Darren Waller (hamstring), RB Gary Brightwell (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)

Dexter Lawrence, Xavier McKinney not practicing

The New York Giants were back on the practice field Thursday ahead of a scheduled day off and were down a starter.

Kicker Randy Bullock has been placed on season-ending injured reserve (IR) with a hamstring issue. He will be replaced by fellow kicker Cade York, who is currently on the practice squad, for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, all eyes were on the Giants’ trio of defensive tackles — Dexter Lawrence, A’Shawn Robinson, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, all of whom are banged up.

Lawrence and Nunez-Roches continued to sit out while Robinson was limited.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), S Xavier McKinney (illness) DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee), OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Lawrence Cager (groin)

5 New York Giants likely headed into their final stretch in blue

Stephen Maturen/Getty Images

Some will lobby to retain Adoree’ Jackson but he’s a free agent come March and the Giants may not feel up to getting into a bidding war for his services on the open market.

Jackson was an outside corner by trade but was shifted into the slot in favor of two rookies, Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins III.

Unless Jackson is willing to come back on a much cheaper deal, he’s a goner.

5 biggest storylines for Week 7

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) have been ruled out again this week, meaning the Giants are without their two best linemen.

Reserve tackle Matt Peart (shoulder) is also out this week and starting right tackle Evan Neal (ankle) is questionable.

Guard Shane Lemieux (biceps) was placed on injured reserve this week. Seven of the nine linemen that made the Giants’ opening-day roster are either on IR, or off the team completely.

Earlier this week, the Giants added Tyre Phillips and Joshua Miles and signed Justin Pugh off the practice squad. They released Jalen Mayfield and placed Joshua Ezeudu (toe) on IR.

Giants’ Daniel Jones questionable, 3 out vs. Commanders in Week 7

The New York Giants will host the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Sunday and will be down several key players.

Quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) is questionable but still not cleared for contact, likely meaning Tyrod Taylor will get his second start of the season.

Additionally, the offensive line will again see another combination.

“No excuses. This is the National Football League. People get hurt. You’ve got to get the next guy ready, and you’ve got to get ready to play a game,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Friday.

Meanwhile, for the Commanders, their final injury report was completely void of all names. They are as healthy as any team could be going into Week 7.

New York Giants injury report: Daniel Jones remains limited

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday and little had changed from the day prior. Quarterback Daniel Jones remains limited and was not cleared for contact.

“He’ll throw out here at practice, same as yesterday,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. “Like I said yesterday, doctors will let me know when he’s ready to play.”

“When the doctors tell me he’s ready to play he’ll be ready to play,” Daboll repeated when asked again.

Meanwhile, offensive lineman Shane Lemieux was placed on injured reserve (IR) with a torn biceps and five other linemen were at least limited in practice.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Daniel Jones limited in return to practice

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and so did quarterback Daniel Jones, who is still nursing a neck injury.

Although Jones is not yet cleared for contact, he was able to do some throwing and could be in play for Sunday, although that should be considered unlikely.

“He’s doing better and he’ll be out here at practice today doing some stuff. We’ll see where we’re at,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “He’s cleared to throw so that’s what he’s going to do today.”

Asked if there’s any concern DJ misses the rest of the season, Daboll said his quarterback will “be back.”

The news wasn’t as positive for several others, including left tackle Andrew Thomas, who continues to sit out with a hamstring injury.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Evan Neal (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (neck), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), CB Cor’Dale Flott (ankle/shoulder), K Graham Gano (knee), OL Mark Glowinski (quad/ankle), CB Adoree’ Jackson (neck), OL Shane Lemieux (groin/biceps)

Daniel Jones continues to miss practice

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Thursday but did so without starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who remains sidelined due to a neck injury.

Although head coach Brian Daboll refused to rule Jones out for a Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills, things appear to be trending in that direction.

In addition to Jones and the remaining injury report, which was already large in scale, punter Jamie Gillan was added as a non-participant. He missed Thursday’s practice with what the Giants called an “illness.”
