Apple Safari Browser to Reportedly Get Major AI Upgrade With Article Summarisation, Web Eraser Features

Apple’s Safari web browser is reportedly getting a major upgrade and could soon sport artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features. Earlier this month, a report claimed that Safari could be one of the first Apple apps to get AI features. Now, another report has stated that the company is currently running internal tests on multiple new features for the Safari 18 build that will come with iOS 18 and macOS 15. Additionally, the tech giant is also said to be working on a system-wide visual lookup feature.

According to a report by AppleInsider, the next update to Safari could come with a minor interface revamp, features to summarise articles, blocking content on a web page, and even an AI-powered assistant. Citing unnamed people familiar with the development, the report stated that Apple is currently evaluating the performance and viability of these features. The publication also shared images of the features.

The most notable feature mentioned in the report is Intelligent Search. The feature is said to draw on Apple’s on-device AI technology, specifically the language-learning model Ajax, to summarise web pages and articles. Based on the examples shared, the AI feature summarises the text in topic headlines and small paragraphs describing the topics. Notably, similar features are also offered by Google with its Gemini AI and Microsoft’s Copilot. It is not known whether the Intelligent Assistant will also offer other features such as text generation.

Another AI-powered feature Apple is working on for its Safari 18 browser is being called Web Eraser, as per the report. This is a content-blocking tool that can remove any element from a web page. The tool can be used to delete banner ads, images, and even text from a page. It is said that the Safari browser remembers the elements removed by a user even when the session is over. Opening the same page next time automatically adds the same effect and gives the option to revert to the unblocked view.

Apart from these, the browser is also getting a minor interface change. A new page controls menu is reportedly being added to the address bar. This menu will contain the options to activate the above mentioned features as well as include various other tools that are currently spread across different menus in Safari. Based on the screenshot, it also features the ‘Aa’ option and the zoom feature. Notably, the new Safari browser’s interface is being kept the same in both iOS 18 and macOS 15 versions, suggesting that the tech giant might be unifying the browser experience across both devices.

Finally, the report highlighted that Apple is working on an enhancement to its visual lookup feature which currently exists within the Photos app and identifies plants, pets and landmarks from photos. The report claims Apple is trying to make this feature system-wide so it works on any screen including the web pages of Safari. The under-development enhancement is said to be powered by AI.

Apple Vision Pro Safari Browsing Interface With Multitasking, 3D Object Support Leaks Ahead of Launch

Apple is expected to launch its first wearable spatial computer — the Apple Vision Pro — in the coming weeks and details of the company’s mixed reality headset have begun to surface online. Ahead of the arrival of the Vision Pro, a user on X (formerly known as Twitter) recently leaked visuals of Apple’s Safari web browser running on the headset. The ability to resize and arrange browser windows or interact with and view 3D objects is also shown in the leaked demo.

X user M1 (@M1Astra) recently leaked a demo of Safari running on the Apple Vision Pro, giving enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from the company’s first wearable mixed reality headset. While Safari — and other web browsers on personal computers — display websites that are stacked on top of each other, accessible via tabs, the Vision Pro will allow you to view tabs in a 3D space.

The leaked video, which has since been taken down by X in response to a copyright-related takedown request, is still accessible via the user’s Discord channel. It shows how the Vision Pro displays smooth animations when switching between up to five tabs, and the names of the websites are displayed under each tab. You can also expand a window and visionOS — the operating system that runs on the Vision Pro — will show you all of your tabs at a glance.

Another feature shown off in the leaked Apple Vision Pro demo is the ability to interact with 3D objects in Safari. While Apple already allows users to place objects around them virtually on their phone’s screen using augmented reality (AR) on an iPhone, the Vision Pro will let you interact with 3D objects in Safari in a 360-degree view, even resizing it to get a better look at the object.

When it unveiled the Apple Vision Pro last year, the company only mentioned an “early 2024” launch timeline for the headset. Recent reports indicate that the company’s production is on track for the headset to go on sale in the US by the end of February. Since the headset was revealed at WWDC, Telegram Co-Founder Pavel Durov also teased the design of the app on the Vision Pro.

The Apple Vision Pro is a pricy device — it costs $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) for the headset, while customers who require Zeiss prescription optical inserts will have to spend more money to use the headset. The Vision Pro will be available in the US at launch and will reportedly make its way to other markets over the course of the year, but there’s no word from the company on which regions it will arrive in.

Fake Google Chrome, Safari Updates Infecting Mac Computers With AMOS Malware

Fake Google Chrome and Safari updates for macOS are being used to infect Mac computers with the nefarious Atomic Stealer malware, also known as AMOS. Distributed to Mac owners as part of a social engineering campaign, AMOS can steal passwords, private files stored on a Mac. Users will need to stay alert and possibly use web protection tools in order to protect themselves from malware distributed by social engineering, as malware creators appear to be turning their attention to Mac owners.

Security firm Malwarebytes shared details of the latest version of Atomic Stealer, malware that is distributed to macOS users via ClearFake, a campaign that uses hijacked WordPress websites to deliver fake browser updates for Chrome and Safari. The distribution of AMOS via ClearFake to macOS users was recently spotted by Ankit Anubhav, a security researcher.

The malware is distributed via hijacked sites that closely resemble the Google Chrome download page, and a fake Safari update page that uses outdated icons from older macOS versions. However, the rest of the webpage design might convince some users to click and download the malware, while the fake Chrome download looks more convincing.

When the user clicks the download button, the malicious .dmg file is then downloaded to the Mac computer, disguised as a browser installer. Once it downloaded and opened, the user is prompted to enter the administrator password that will run nefarious commands on the device, including stealing passwords from Apple’s Keychain and exfiltrate document, images, wallets and other data from the user’s desktop and documents folders on macOS.

In order to stay protected from the malware, users will have to make sure they use some form of web protection — such as the Safe Browsing setting inside Google Chrome. Doing so might block some of these malicious sites from loading altogether.

Meanwhile, users should avoid downloading installers for Chrome from unknown websites. These social engineering websites are aimed at fooling users who might find it difficult to discern which websites are genuine. A good rule of thumb is to check whether the address bar shows google.com. On the other hand, Apple does not distribute Safari updates outside of operating system updates, so there are no official downloads that can be installed by users.

India’s Homegrown Web Browser May Come With Crypto-Loaded Features: Details

India is gradually but consistently marching ahead in its blockchain and Web3 exploration. While the country is still working on formulating crypto rules and conducting trials over its eRupee CBDC, India’s IT ministry has a new plan for launching a homegrown Web browser. This Indian Web browser will be packed with Web3 capabilities. The idea is to incorporate elements of blockchain into this browser to make the platform ready to handle the next iteration of Internet as well as its use cases.

India’s IT ministry has launched a contest called the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge this week. The contest will have a total of three rounds, and at the end of the third round the winning participant(s) will be awarded a prize of $410,685 (roughly Rs. 3.4 crore).

Officials from India’s IT ministry, including ministry secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma, flagged off this contest on August 9.

The aim of the competition is to get India’s developer talent to create a homegrown Web browser for India, hoping to reduce our reliance on established foreign players like Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge among others.

As part of the advanced features that this browser is expected to get, Indians could soon be able to digitally sign documents using crypto tokens. Official information about this functionality have not been revealed in detail yet.

While India only allows crypto trading and holding for now; its plans of embedding crypto in a homegrown Web browser seems like a positive indication to the country’s Web3 industry. Members of the crypto industry in India have time and again highlighted that the country’s engineering talent and a general tech-savvy aptitude could make it a hub for Web3 projects.

Speaking to Gadgets 360, earlier this month, Bharat Web3 Association had also said that Indians are being drawn towards exploring the decentralised finance (DeFi) sector, powered by blockchains and cryptocurrencies.

By December this year, India could unveil a set of crypto laws, that could work on a global level. As the current president of the G20 group, India is working closely with other nations as well as international financial bodies to draft elaborate rules to oversee the volatile digital assets industry.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) are among global financial institutions, participating in India’s crypto law framework.

Meanwhile, the indigenous Web browser will also have built-in ‘diverse accessibility’ support for disabled individuals, officials have said.

The development followed India’s approval of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 in both houses of the Parliament earlier this week.

The Bill, which comes after six years of the Supreme Court declaring ‘Right to Privacy’ as a fundamental right, has provisions to curb the misuse of individuals’ data by online platforms.

As per Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, this law will give Indians the right to correct their data. It also puts a timeline on the duration any data that is stored with entities. The law is estimated to come into motion within ten months.

iPhone, iPad Bug Caused Safari to Crash When Typing Certain Letters: Report

iPhone and iPad users were reportedly facing a bizarre bug that was crashing the Safari browser while trying to search for certain words. The app was supposedly crashing as users entered the first three letters of certain words. The issue seemed to have affected Apple devices running on different versions of iOS 16. In addition, there have been reports of iOS 15 users also experiencing this bug. The exact cause for this error is unknown, however, several users are now claiming that this error has been fixed.

According to a report by MacRumours, several iPhone and iPad users have started experiencing a bug that would crash the Safari app when trying to search for certain terms. The issue had supposedly appeared overnight for several Apple devices running on iOS 15.7.1, ‌iOS 16‌, iOS 16.1, iOS 16.1.1, and the iOS 16.2 beta.

The Safari app was said to be crashing whenever users tried to type tar, bes, wal, wel, old, sta, pla, and a few other phrases in the search bar. The bug seemingly prevented users from going beyond the first three letters of a word. Apple users had pointed out that turning off Safari Suggestions in the app settings would prevent the bug from surfacing.

It is believed to be a server-side bug that Apple has purportedly fixed without having to roll out an iOS update.

In related news, Apple recently released the iOS 16.1.1 update with several bug fixes and improvements that were not mentioned in the change logs. However, the update is said to have resolved a Wi-Fi connectivity issue faced by iOS 16 users. This update is available for iPhone 8 and later models. The Cupertino company also began rolling out the iPadOS 16.1.1 and macOS Ventura 13.0.1 updates at the same time.
