Apple’s 4th Generation AirPods, AirPods Max Could Arrive in Late 2024: Report

Apple is still expected to launch the fourth-generation AirPods and a new AirPods Max later this year, despite no new leaks, according to a report. The tech giant is going through a tough period as reports suggest that Apple Vision Pro buyers are returning the headset at an unusually high rate. However, this has not dented any of its long-term plans and the company is reportedly on schedule to unveil two different variants of new AirPods.

In his latest weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman shared that Apple is right on track to bring two new AirPods and a new AirPods Max to the market in late 2024. This information comes as a much-needed update to his older report in October 2023, which first mentioned the development. At the time, Gurman had said that the two variants of the truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones would replace the second and third-generation AirPods.

The report suggested that the earphones could be entirely redesigned from top to bottom. It is said to sport a shorter stem, a new earbud design, and a new look for the charging case. Audio quality is also expected to witness an upgrade. Between the two variants, the base model could get a new earbud and charging case design but will miss out on Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

Meanwhile, the more expensive variant is said to feature ANC and a charging case speaker that can be triggered to play a sound via the Find My app’s location tracking feature. That’s not all as the report also mentions that a new AirPods Pro could be unveiled by Apple in 2025 with an updated chip, which can be the company’s H3 chipset.

Alongside, Apple is also expected to refresh its top-of-the-line AirPods Max. Unlike the earphones, the headphones are not likely to get a major overhaul. As per Gurman, the new model could ditch the Lightning port in favour of the USB Type-C port and get a wired audio playback feature. Additionally, they might arrive in newer colour options. The current generation AirPods Max are available in Green, Pink, Silver, Sky Blue, and Space Grey.

Apple Reportedly Plans AirPods Lineup Revamp: 4th Generation Earbuds, New AirPods Max in 2024

Apple is gearing up to host its ‘Scary Fast’ event at the end of the month, where the company is expected take the covers off of new MacBook Pro and iMac models. While several Mac models are set to be refreshed, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant could be working on large-scale changes for another popular product line. AirPods, Apple’s wildly successful line of truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones, are reportedly up for an “end-to-end” overhaul, with new updates set to arrive across its entire lineup.

According to a report from Blomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is readying a new version of its entry-level AirPods in 2024 and will follow it up with a new AirPods Pro in 2025. Both products will see changes from top to bottom, with Apple working on a new earbud design, refreshed look for the cases, and audio quality upgrades. Additionally, the company will bring a new version of the top-of-the line $549 (Rs. 59,900 in India) AirPods Max headphones next year.

Apple also plans to discontinue the second and third-generation AirPods later next year, the report says. These will be replaced by two distinct fourth-generation AirPods, which will reportedly get similar pricing to their predecessors, but the two new products will reflect broader differentiation. Gurman says that the higher-priced version of the fourth-generation AirPods will get active noise cancellation feature from the Pro model and an updated charging case. The two models will also get a redesigned look with shorter stems — a mix between the older AirPods and AirPods Pro.

Currently, Apple sells a pair of second-generation AirPods for Rs. 12,900 and a third-generation one for Rs. 19,900, with little that separates the two products. Then, there’s the second-generation AirPods Pro, which comes in at Rs. 24,900. Apple recently refreshed the Pro model at its ‘Wonderlust’ event in September, adding a USB Type-C port to the case, replacing the Lightening port.

All new AirPods models, including the next AirPods Max, will also get USB Type-C charging as Apple transitions from the Lightening port. The iPhone 15 series, the company’s latest lineup of smartphones, launched last month sporting USB Type-C ports, finally laying the infamous Lightening port — first introduced in 2012 with the iPhone 5 — to rest.

AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) to Gain Adaptive Audio Feature With iOS 17: How it Works

AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) are set to receive a noteworthy software upgrade with the arrival of iOS 17 later this year. At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote event on Monday, Apple announced that its latest truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones will gain a new feature called Adaptive Audio that can intelligently analyse your environment to adjust transparency mode and active noise cancellation (ANC) settings, without any input. It can blend both modes together based on you interacting with your environment over the course of a day, according to the company.

During the WWDC 2023 keynote event, Ron Huang, Apple VP for Sensing and Connectivity, announced that the second-generation AirPods Pro would gain support for Adaptive Audio, a feature that dynamically blends both ANC and transparency mode. This mixed mode will allow you to shut off background noise, while important sounds like horns and bells will continue to alert you.

Apple says that it will used personalised volume controls based on machine learning trained on your listening preferences over time, in combination with the Adaptive Audio feature that uses both ANC and transparency mode, to offer a better experience while listening to music and podcast episodes.

Meanwhile, AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) will also be updated with another useful feature when iOS 17 arrives, called Conversation Awareness. When music is playing on the AirPods, the feature will detect when you are speaking and automatically lower the media volume, reduce background sounds, and focus on the voices of people facing you.

Apple says that Adaptive Audio will also block external sounds while speaking on a phone call, allowing you to hear the other participants without distractions. You will also be able to mute yourself with a pinch gesture. Automatically switching an AirPods connection across Apple devices will also become more seamless later this year, according to the company.

Apple’s annual developer conference is just around the corner.
