If the Giants carry three quarterbacks, Tommy DeVito makes the roster. If they decide to go with only two, he’ll be waived and signed back to the practice squad.

This will happen no matter how well or poorly he plays in this game. The only issue here is the prospect of losing him to another team if he gets cut, but that means another team would probably have to add him to their 53-man roster, which is unlikely.

Either way, he’s fun to watch and will be up against a tough Jets defensive front.

Offense, defense and ST snap counts

The New York Giants made their 2023 preseason debut at MetLife Stadium on Friday night a picked up a 21-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

It was a crisp showing from the first-team offense, led by the dynamic combination of quarterback Daniel Jones and tight end Darren Waller. There was also solid play from the starting offensive line, which seems to have significantly improved their pass protection.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ victory.

Offensive snaps: 65
Defensive snaps: 63
Special teams snaps: 21

After missing the first week of the preseason, second-year right tackle Evan Neal was on the field for 34 offensive snaps — second-most on the team. The Giants obviously wanted to get a good look at him and have Neal knock some of the rust off.

Veteran running back James Robinson took just four snaps and doesn’t seem like a player destined to stick around.

Rookies continue to get plenty of playing time to boost their game experience ahead of the regular season, while fringe players like Oshane Ximines and Carter Coughlin also continue to get extended looks.

New York Giants sign RB James Robinson: 5 things to know

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

If Barkley plays and stays healthy all year, the Giants should have enough depth to get through the season. With journeyman Matt Breida, rookie Eric Gray and veteran Gary Brightwell, the Giants are fairly set.

If Barkley sits out the year, Robinson could factor in. He is an experienced and versatile back whose career could be on the rebound and he will challenge the group for playing time. He could do that as a backup as well.

New York Giants sign RB James Robinson

With Saquon Barkley’s future uncertain, the New York Giants added a little bit of insurance on Friday, signing running back James Robinson.

The 24-year-old Robinson was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Illinois State in 2020. He spent three seasons with the Jags before joining the New York Jets last season.

Robinson signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the New England Patriots during free agency but he was released on June 12.

In 39 career games (32 starts), Robinson has rushed for 2,262 yards and scored 18 touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He’s also caught 91 passes for an additional 617 yards and five touchdowns.

The 5-foot-9, 219-pound Robinson had his best season as a rookie, gaining 1,414 yards from scrimmage and scoring 10 total touchdowns. He was named to the PWFA All-Rookie Team.

Robinson earned a 59.7 Pro Football Focus grade in 2022. His best season came as a rookie, earning a PFF grade of 72.9.

With the Giants, Robinson joins a stable of running backs that includes Matt Breida, rookie Eric Gray, Gary Brightwell and Jashaun Corbin.
