Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip Confirmed to Arrive on OnePlus 12, Xiaomi 14, iQoo 12 and Realme GT5 Pro

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was announced by Qualcomm at the chipmaker’s annual Snapdragon Summit event on Tuesday. The new chip will power flagship Android smartphones from a range of manufacturers expected to debut in the coming weeks and months — starting with the Xiaomi 14 that will be launched on October 26. OEMs like Asus, Honor, iQoo, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Red Magic, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE will launch smartphones that are equipped with the new chip.

The Xiaomi 14 is set to debut on October 26 as the company’s next flagship smartphone and will be the first handset to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Company president William Lu has already confirmed the launch of the handset in China, but the company has not announced the launch of the Xiaomi 14 in other markets, including India.

On November 7, iQoo has scheduled a launch event where the company is expected to unveil the iQoo 12 in China — this phone is confirmed to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip. Both Vivo and Realme have also confirmed the arrival of smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

Meanwhile, OnePlus and Oppo will also launch phones powered by the new Snapdragon chip. We already know the next handset from the former will be called the OnePlus 12, but the company is yet to announce a launch date. On the other hand, we can expect the Oppo Find X7 Pro to be the firm’s first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip under the hood.

Redmi K70 will debut in China as the company’s first smartphone to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, but there’s no official launch date for the handset at the time of publishing this article. Onthe other hand, ZTE has confirmed that upcoming phones from Nubia and Red Magic will be equipped with the flagship Snapdragon chipset.

Other smartphone manufacturers that have confirmed that their upcoming flagship phones will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip — without revealing the names of the handsets — include Honor, Asus, Sony, and Motorola. We can expect more smartphone makers to announce plans to launch handsets powered by the new Snapdragon chip in the coming days and weeks.

Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, 16GB RAM Listed on Geekbench

Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC debuted in India in April this year. Now, Asus seems to be shifting its focus on the next handset in the lineup — the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate. While its launch date remains a mystery, the upcoming ROG series smartphone seems to have surfaced on the Geekbench benchmarking site. The alleged Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate is shown to run on an octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with 16GB RAM. The listing suggests Android 14 operating system on the handset.

An Asus handset has been spotted on the Geekbench website with the model number ASUS_AI2401_A. The listing, dated September 26 is believed to be that of the Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate, indicating that it might ship with Android 14. The listing shows 2,213 points in single-core testing and 7,048 points in multi-core testing. As per the listing, the handset could get 15.06GB of RAM, this could get translated to 16GB on paper.

It shows a prime CPU core with a maximum clock speed of 3.19GHz, five cores with a clock speed of 2.96GHz and two cores capped at 2.27GHz. These CPU speeds and codename could be associated with the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The upcoming chipset will succeed last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and Qualcomm is expected to announce it  at the Snapdragon Summit 2023 event in October.

There’s not a whole lot more that’s known about the Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate at this point, however, we can expect the handset to bring upgrades over the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. The latter is priced at Rs. 99,999 in India for the 16GB RAM + 512GB storage model.

Dell, HP, Lenovo Among 32 Firms That Applied to Make Laptops in India, Says IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

At least 32 international electronics companies have applied to India’s incentive programme to make laptops, tablets and servers in the country, a top minister said on Wednesday, weeks after the government announced restrictions on laptop imports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is pushing to boost domestic manufacturing capacity under its “Make in India” initiative, with several global companies either setting up their own units or entering joint ventures with Indian firms.

The applications by the electronics companies were made under the country’s $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,500 crore) production-linked incentive (PLI) programme for information technology hardware, announced in May, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Earlier this month, India said it would impose a licensing requirement for imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers, which was widely seen as a move to boost local production.

The companies that have applied to make laptops and other products in India include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell Technologies, Asus, Acer and Lenovo, said Vaishnaw, according to a video feed from ANI news agency, in which Reuters has a minority stake.

The PLI scheme for IT hardware is expected to bring Rs. 24.3 billion of incremental investment and is likely to generate 75,000 direct jobs, the minister said.

India will provide a transition period of about three months before a new licensing regime for imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers comes into effect, the country’s trade regulator said on August 5.

This is a partial reversal from a surprise decision on Thursday to impose the licensing requirement with immediate effect, which had prompted calls for a delay.

“Import consignments can be cleared till October 31 without a license and a government permit would be required for clearance of import from November 1,” the government said in a notification.

Asus Refutes Zenfone Division Shutdown Report, Says Zenfone 10 Production to Continue: Details

Asus Zenfone 10 will not be the last smartphone in the series from the Taiwanese firm. The company has cleared the rumours surrounding the Zenfone lineup after a report claimed that it was shutting the Zenfone division. The firm has also denied the claim made in the report that there would be no Asus Zenfone 11 next year. Instead, the smartphone maker stated that the Zenfone and the ROG Phone lineup will continue to expand. Asus Zenfone 10 is the latest handset in the Zenfone series and it was launched in June.

Responding to a report from Technews Taiwan claiming that the Zenfone 10 would be the last phone in the series, Asus has officially confirmed that it will bring the successor to the smartphone in 2024. In an official statement, the firm stated, “We would like to address the rumour that Asus Zenfone 10 will be the last generation of the series and the Asus Zenfone product line will be shut down. This is not true.” The company also clarified that Asus’ Zenfone and ROG Phone production has not been halted.

The Technews Taiwan report had suggested that an internal restructuring was being carried out at Asus and the Zenfone division was being shut down as a result. It was claimed that this year’s Zenfone 10 would be the last generation of the series. However, the clarification from Asus has refuted the claims made in the report, pointing to its Q2 earnings call for additional information, and asking customers to stay tuned for the firm’s 2024 product lineup.

Asus launched the Zenfone 10 in June. The smartphone sports a 5.9-inch full-HD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) AMOLED display with HDR10+ support and a refresh rate of 144Hz. It is powered by an octa-core 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC coupled with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS4.0 inbuilt storage.

For optics, the Zenfone 10 is equipped with a dual rear camera unit which comprises a 50-megapixel primary Sony IMX766 sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens. There is also a 32-megapixel selfie camera. The phone runs on Android 13-based Asus ZenUI out-of-the-box and packs a 4,300mAh battery with 30W wired and 15W wireless fast charging support.

Asus Zenfone 10 Renders, Specifications Leak Again; 200-Megapixel Dual Rear Cameras Tipped

Asus Zenfone 10 is all set to hit the market on June 29. As we inch closer to the launch date, more leaks about the new Zenfone are surfacing on the Web. Once again, alleged renders and specifications of the forthcoming flagship have leaked online. The renders show off five colour options for the Asus Zenfone 10. The design is similar to the Asus ZenFone 9 that was released in July last year. The smartphone is confirmed to run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It is expected to carry a dual rear camera unit, comprising a 200-megapixel primary sensor.

German publication WinFuture.de has leaked the renders and specifications of the Asus Zenfone 10. As mentioned, the renders show the handset in five different colour options —black, grey, green, red, and white, corroborating previous leaks. It is seen with a left-aligned hole-punch cutout on the display. Further, the handset appears to have a dual camera setup at the rear alongside an LED flash.

Unlike the latest flagships, Asus Zenfone 10 seems to retain the 3.5mm audio jack. It is shown to have a thinner bottom bezel than its predecessor. Asus has confirmed that the smartphone will come with a 5.9-inch full-HD AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC will power the handset.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is said to run on Android 13. It is tipped to come in two RAM — 8GB, 16GB —and two storage options —256GB and 512GB. It is expected to pack a dual rear camera unit, including a 200-megapixel Samsung sensor and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera. There could be a 32-megapixel camera at the front, placed inside the corner hole punch cutout. Asus is expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery on the handset. It could feature a 3.5mm headphone jack and is said to have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is expected to have an approximate price tag of $749 (roughly Rs. 62,000) for the base variant. The Taiwan-based smartphone brand will reveal the handset in detail on June 29. The launch event will begin at 9.00am in New York (6:30pm IST).

Asus ZenFone 10 is expected to launch soon as the successor to the Asus ZenFone 9, which was released in July 2022. The Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturer is said to unveil the purported ZenFone 10 later this year in the fourth quarter. Ahead of any announcements, Asus seems to have revealed the price of the smartphone in a slip up. The phone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and fastest yet Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. It is also expected to feature a 200-megapixel primary rear camera sensor.

The Taiwanese smartphone maker recently launched a test website to get reviews from users on the camera capabilities of the upcoming Asus Zenfone 10. AMD Ryzen Z1, Z1 Extreme CPUs for Gaming Handhelds Announced; Asus ROG Ally Confirmed to be First Device

AMD has officially announced its heavily rumoured Ryzen Z1 series of ultra-low-power CPUs for handheld computers, including gaming devices. The new processors are based on the same Zen 4 core architecture as the current-gen Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPUs, and will feature integrated RDNA3 graphics cores, which the Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs are built around. AMD hopes to create a new market for X86-compatible handheld gaming consoles,  designed along the lines of the popular Steam Deck. Existing devices such as the Ayaneo Air series and the upcoming Ayaneo 2 are built around AMD’s Ryzen U-series low-power CPUs, but have so far remained niche even within gaming circles.

The Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld, which was first announced on April 1, has been confirmed to be the first shipping device based on a Ryzen Z1 series CPU. More specific details about its price, launch date and other specifications will be announced by Asus on May 11 at 7:30pm (IST).

Two CPU models have so far been announced: the Ryzen Z1, featuring six multithreaded ‘Zen 4’ CPU cores along with four RDNA3 GPU cores, and the more powerful Ryzen Z1 Extreme with eight CPU cores and a whopping 12 GPU cores. AMD promises industry-leading performance and battery life, for an “elite gaming experience” in a highly portable form factor. Using the same hardware as mainstream AMD CPUs and GPUs means that handheld devices based on Ryzen Z1 processors will support the company’s Radeon Super Resolution graphics upscaling technology, as well as other features such as Radeon Chill for power saving and AMD Link game streaming.

On the platform level, devices based on Ryzen Z1 CPUs will support USB4, LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X RAM, and of course support for Windows, which opens up a whole ecosystem of games and gaming stores beyond Steam. Devices will also be capable of functioning as full-fledged computers running everyday Windows software, especially when connected to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. As per AMD’s statements, users will also be able to take advantage of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription service for gaming on the go.

No official performance, temperature or battery life figures have been released yet, but Asus’s announcement on May 11 should shed some light on what potential buyers can expect. However, given AMD’s continued push into the thin-and-light laptop space and claims of delivering premium graphics performance with its Ryzen 7xxx mobile CPUs, it will be interesting to see how this turns out and whether more manufacturers announce gaming handhelds based on these CPUs before or at the upcoming PC-centric Computex trade show.
