Nubia Flip 5G Clamshell Foldable Phone Could Be in the Works; Reportedly Listed on IMEI Database

Nubia Flip 5G is said to be in the works as the first foldable phone from the brand owned by ZTE. The existence of the clamshell foldable smartphone is yet to be officially announced by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, but ahead of it, it has been allegedly spotted on the IMEI database with model number NX724J. The Nubia Flip 5G is tipped to run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It is expected to compete with the likes of Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G.

As per a report by GSMChina, Nubia’s first flip-style foldable phone —Nubia Flip 5G — has made its appearance on the IMEI database with the model number NX724J. The smartphone is said to come with 5G connectivity and could be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

If the rumours about Nubia Flip 5G turn out to be true, it will mark the entry of the ZTE-owned brand into the foldable space. This would create fresh competition for brands including Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor. A slew of foldable devices with vertical display including Oppo Find N3 Flip, Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G, Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 have hit the market this year.

Chinese tech brands Honor and Vivo are reportedly gearing up to unveil new smartphones with a foldable form factor to rival Samsung in a smartphone category it pioneered. The South Korean brand has so far introduced five iterations of the Galaxy Z foldable flagships.

Leaks about the Nubia Flip 5G have surfaced online just a day after the company unveiled the Nubia Z60 Ultra in select global markets with a price tag of $599 (roughly Rs. 49,000).

The Nubia Z60 Ultra runs on Android 14-based MyOS 14 and sports a 6.8-inch full-HD+ (1,116×2,480 pixels) AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. It is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and features a triple rear camera setup, headlined by a 50-megapixel 35mm Sony IMX800 sensor. The phone is backed by a 6,000mAh battery.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip Confirmed to Arrive on OnePlus 12, Xiaomi 14, iQoo 12 and Realme GT5 Pro

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was announced by Qualcomm at the chipmaker’s annual Snapdragon Summit event on Tuesday. The new chip will power flagship Android smartphones from a range of manufacturers expected to debut in the coming weeks and months — starting with the Xiaomi 14 that will be launched on October 26. OEMs like Asus, Honor, iQoo, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Red Magic, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE will launch smartphones that are equipped with the new chip.

The Xiaomi 14 is set to debut on October 26 as the company’s next flagship smartphone and will be the first handset to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Company president William Lu has already confirmed the launch of the handset in China, but the company has not announced the launch of the Xiaomi 14 in other markets, including India.

On November 7, iQoo has scheduled a launch event where the company is expected to unveil the iQoo 12 in China — this phone is confirmed to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip. Both Vivo and Realme have also confirmed the arrival of smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

Meanwhile, OnePlus and Oppo will also launch phones powered by the new Snapdragon chip. We already know the next handset from the former will be called the OnePlus 12, but the company is yet to announce a launch date. On the other hand, we can expect the Oppo Find X7 Pro to be the firm’s first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip under the hood.

Redmi K70 will debut in China as the company’s first smartphone to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, but there’s no official launch date for the handset at the time of publishing this article. Onthe other hand, ZTE has confirmed that upcoming phones from Nubia and Red Magic will be equipped with the flagship Snapdragon chipset.

Other smartphone manufacturers that have confirmed that their upcoming flagship phones will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip — without revealing the names of the handsets — include Honor, Asus, Sony, and Motorola. We can expect more smartphone makers to announce plans to launch handsets powered by the new Snapdragon chip in the coming days and weeks.

Huawei, ZTE Should Be Restricted in More EU Countries, Urges EU Chief Thierry Breton

EU industry chief Thierry Breton on Thursday urged more EU countries to join the 10 that have restricted or banned China’s Huawei and ZTE from their 5G telecoms networks, citing risks to the bloc’s collective security.

Breton has in recent weeks voiced concerns that some EU countries still have perceived high risk components in their 5G core network, citing intrusive third-country laws on national intelligence and data security — a veiled reference to China.

European Union guidelines adopted two years ago call on its 27 member states to assess the risk profile of suppliers on a national or EU level, and restrict or ban high-risk 5G vendors from core parts of their telecoms networks.

“To date, only 10 of them have used these prerogatives to restrict or exclude high-risk vendors. This is too slow, and it poses a major security risk and exposes the Union’s collective security, since it creates a major dependency for the EU and serious vulnerabilities,” Breton told a press conference.

He said decisions taken by those EU countries to curb or block Huawei and ZTE were justified and in line with the bloc’s 5G guidelines, and urged telecoms operators to do the same.

Germany is examining Chinese components in its 5G network, its Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in April, while Portugal last month issued a resolution that could bar telecoms operators from using Chinese equipment in their 5G mobile networks and 4G platforms.

Huawei, ZTE and Beijing have strongly rejected Western allegations that the companies’ equipment might be used for spying.

The European Commission will also ban Huawei and ZTE from its own procurement of telecoms services, Breton said.

“We call on all EU institutions to follow soon,” he said.

US House to Vote on Bill to Crack Down on Huawei, ZTE Amid Security Concerns

The House of Representatives is set to vote next week on a bill to crack down on Chinese telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE Corp that have been deemed security threats by the US government.

The House said on Tuesday it will take up a bipartisan bill called the Countering Untrusted Telecommunications Abroad Act that would require the State Department to report on US NATO allies and others using telecommunication equipment or services in their 5G networks from companies like Huawei and ZTE.

“We need to redouble our efforts to protect our national security and interests, help our allies take vital measures for their own security, and stand firmly in defense of fundamental rights,” said Representative Susan Wild, the Democratic sponsor of the measure.

The legislation would also require publicly traded companies to disclose whether they have contracted to use Huawei or ZTE or services covered under the bill. Huawei and ZTE did not immediately comment.

The bill would also mandate a report on telecommunications vulnerabilities in US embassies overseas, and direct the US State Department to identify key telecommunications infrastructure projects to promote US national security.

The Federal Communications Commission in November banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE, saying they pose “an unacceptable risk” to US national security.

Last year, the Chinese embassy in Washington said the FCC “abused state power and maliciously attacked Chinese telecom operators again without factual basis.” Huawei has repeatedly denied allegations of wrongdoing and said the US government has “unlawfully and irrationally” targeted the company.

Washington’s efforts to counter the Chinese tech giants come amid US fears that Beijing could use them to spy on Americans. Washington has for years pressured US allies not to use Huawei or ZTE equipment from 5G networks or remove gear from existing networks.

In 2019, Congress directed the FCC to order US telecoms carriers receiving federal subsidies to purge their networks of telecoms equipment posing national security risks, with promises of reimbursement.

The FCC designated Huawei and ZTE as threats, requiring US companies to remove their gear or be frozen out of an $8.3 billion (roughly Rs. 681.01 crores) government fund to purchase new equipment. However, to fund the so-called “rip and replace” effort, Congress only appropriated $1.9 billion (roughly Rs. 155 crores).

The FCC said last year companies need another $3 billion (roughly Rs. 246 crores) to remove from U.S. networks equipment made by Chinese telecoms giants Huawei and ZTE bringing the total estimated cost to $4.98 billion (roughly Rs. 408 crores).

Huawei, ZTE Ban Would Impact Mobile Networks in Germany, Fears German Ministry

A ban on certain components by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE could have a significant impact on Germany’s mobile network if they have to be replaced on a larger scale, according to a German economy ministry letter seen by Reuters.

The German government is currently carrying out a review of telecom tech suppliers which it says is not directed at specific manufacturers.

If extensive changes are required as a result of a ban or regulation, “there is likely to be significant impact on the operation of mobile networks and the fulfilment of coverage requirements,” said the letter to the Bundestag lower house of parliament’s economic committee.

The precise impact on mobile operators and other economic players is not possible to assess, the ministry added, as it depends on individual decisions as well as transition periods.

The government’s review could lead to operators being asked to remove and replace components already built into 5G networks. Under current legislation, they would not receive compensation.

Critics of Huawei and ZTE say that their close links to Beijing’s security services mean that embedding them in mobile networks could give Chinese spies and even saboteurs access to essential infrastructure.

Huawei, ZTE and China’s government reject such claims, saying they are motivated by a protectionist desire to support non-Chinese rivals.

It was reported a few days back that Germany plans to ban telecoms operators from using certain components made by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE in 5G networks in a potentially significant move to address security concerns.

The German ban could include components already built into the networks, requiring operators to remove and replace them, Zeit Online reported, citing sources.

BSNL-ZTE Alleged Scam: Delhi High Court Directs BSNL to Initiate Departmental Action

The Delhi High Court has directed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to initiate departmental action, as suggested by the CBI, against its officers for allegedly formulating improper tenders and lack of planning before issuing of purchase orders of GSM telephone mobile lines.

The high court made it clear that it has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the imputations of allegations on the officers of BSNL and any action initiated by the telecom company be taken to its logical conclusion on its own merits.

The court’s order came while disposing of a plea in which it was alleged that BSNL officials allegedly caused loss of about Rs. 1,000 crore to the exchequer by releasing unauthorised payment to the subsidiary of a Chinese firm by fabricating documents.

“The Preliminary Enquiry (PE) has been registered by the CBI at the instance of this court and the CBI, after concluding the investigation has filed status reports before this court. On a perusal of the status reports, this court does not find any reason to discard the status reports filed by the CBI and pass any further directions.

“This court, however, directs the BSNL to initiate departmental action, as suggested by the CBI, against its officers. It is made clear that this court has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the imputations of allegations on the officers of BSNL. Any action initiated by the BSNL be taken to its logical conclusion on its own merits,” a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said in an order passed on Thursday.

It said as ordered by the apex court in the Latika Kumari case, the CBI is directed to supply a copy of the entry of the closure to the petitioner disclosing the reasons, in brief, for closing the complaint and not proceeding further.

It granted liberty to the petitioner NGO Telecom Watchdog to take recourse to the legal remedies in accordance with law.

The petition filed by the NGO, represented through advocate Prashant Bhushan, had alleged that officials of BSNL had connived with M/s ZTE Telecom India Pvt Ltd, a Chinese contractor, and forged official records of BSNL so that “undue payments” of about Rs. 1,000 crore could be released to the firm.

The CBI, in its latest status report filed in the court in January, stated that though money had been received by M/s Trimax IT and Infrastructure Ltd from ZTE no link has been established that the money received by them was used in bribing the officials of BSNL.

The status report, however, suggested that departmental enquiry must be initiated against a senior officer of BSNL for making modification in the payment milestone without deliberating upon the efforts to acquire the sites which resulted into financial loss and technical degradation by having the add-on work contract with ZTE at the rate of 2011.

It further suggested that departmental action, if found necessary, be taken against the officers of BSNL for formulating improper tenders and lack of planning before issuing of purchase orders.

The petition had claimed that in 2011, BSNL had invited tender for north, south and east zones for 14.37 million GSM mobile telephone lines on turnkey basis and following a transparent competitive bidding process, ZTE emerged as the successful bidder for all three zones at a cost of Rs. 4,204.85 crore.

The plea had alleged that in its tender, BSNL had prescribed eight milestones for releasing payments, according to which only 50 percent payment was payable up to delivery stage and the balance to be released in stages on installation and commissioning.

“During implementation of the project, for unknown reasons, BSNL kept releasing purchase orders without caring for demand in the field. As a result, a huge quantum of the ordered material started piling-up at M/s ZTE’s stores for which BSNL had already paid 50 per cent of the equipment cost including customs duty as per the tender clauses,” it had alleged.

The plea had claimed that certain officials of BSNL and ZTE entered into a conspiracy to release undue payment of 95.10 percent “illegitimately for all such uninstalled equipment”.

It had alleged that official documents were fabricated to release payment of 95.10 percent “illegitimately” to ZTE.

“It is apparent that the respondent (CBI) is not taking any action on the complaint filed by the petitioner for some unknown reasons even in such a serious matter where hundreds of crores of rupees have been released illegitimately in criminal conspiracy between officials of BSNL and a Chinese contractor by forging documents in a contract worth Rs. 4,204.85 crore,” the petitioner had alleged.
