Asus ROG Phone 8 Series Design Revealed in Official Render Ahead of Launch

Asus ROG Phone 8 series is confirmed to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 on January 9. The Taiwanese company is actively teasing the arrival of the new lineup via social media platforms. Most recently, the brand has revealed an official render of the ROG Phone 8 giving us a glimpse at the design of the handsets as part of a blind camera test posted on its website. The render suggests a rectangular triple camera module at the rear. The back panel is seen sporting an RGB logo.

Asus has posted a blind camera test on its website promoting the camera prowess of the upcoming ROG Phone 8 series. The tests involve several sets of three photographs and participants can choose the best-looking photo. It’s not clear if any of these shots were captured by ROG Phone 8 or ROG Phone 8 Ultimate. At the end of the blind test, Asus shows a thank you note with an image displaying two ROG Phone 8 devices.

The render shows the rear panel of the ROG Phone 8 series. They appeared to have a rectangular triple camera unit at the top rear corner. An LED flash is placed beside the sensors. The render seems to have an RGB logo. Further, there is a “GLHF” text inked at the bottom left corner. The handsets also appear to have a side-mounted USB Type-C port.

The company already announced that the launch of the ROG Phone 8 series will take place during CES 2024 in Las Vegas on January 9. The lineup will debut in the Chinese market on January 16 at 7:30pm local time (5:00pm IST).

Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate Spotted on Geekbench With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC

An Asus model, speculated to be the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate has been listed on Geekbench with the model number ‘ASUS_AI2401_D,’ on November 20. The phone is seen with a processor that scored 2,235 points on the single-core test and 7,098 points on the multi-core test. The numbers correspond to that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which the company has already confirmed for the ROG Phone 8 series.

The listing further suggests that the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will likely come with up to 24GB of RAM and run Android 14 with ROG UI on top. The phone has previously been spotted on the 3C certification site, which suggested that the top-of-the-line ROG Phone 8 model could support 65W fast charging and 5G connectivity.

Notably, an Asus phone with the model number ‘ASUS_AI2401_A’ listed on September 26 was spotted on Geekbench previously. The phone is seen with 16GB of RAM and is also said to come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. This could be the base or the Pro model of the ROG Phone 8 series.

The ROG Phone 7 models are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoCs paired with Adreno 740 GPUs, and are available in a Storm White colourway. The base model is offered in an additional Phantom Black option. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is said to increase the performance of the phones by up to 30 percent over the preceding SoCs.

A MySmartPrice report says that the Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate with the model number ASUS_AI2401_A has been spotted on the 3C certification site. The phone has been listed to come with 65W fast charging support, according to the report. The listing also seems to confirm 5G connectivity on the handset.

Asus confirmed that the ROG Phone 8 models will be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets, which is said to enhance the performance of the handsets by up to 30 percent over the preceding processors. With the new SoC, the battery and GPU performance of the phones is also said to increase by 20 and 25 percent, respectively.

According to an earlier Geekbench listing, the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate could come with up to 16GB of RAM and Android 14 out-of-the-box. The 12GB + 256GB variant of the ROG Phone 7 and the 16GB + 512GB option of the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate were priced in India at Rs. 74,999 and Rs. 99,999 during the launch, respectively. Both the handsets come in Storm White colours, while the base model is available in an additional Phantom Black shade.

The ROG Phone 7 models are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoCs paired with Adreno 740 GPUs, up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS4.0 internal storage. They feature 6.78-inch full-HD+ (2448 x 1080) AMOLED displays and 32-megapixel front camera sensors. The triple rear cameras of the phones include a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary sensor, a 13-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel macro shooter. The handsets are backed by 6,000mAh batteries with 65W wired fast charging support.

Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, 16GB RAM Listed on Geekbench

Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC debuted in India in April this year. Now, Asus seems to be shifting its focus on the next handset in the lineup — the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate. While its launch date remains a mystery, the upcoming ROG series smartphone seems to have surfaced on the Geekbench benchmarking site. The alleged Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate is shown to run on an octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with 16GB RAM. The listing suggests Android 14 operating system on the handset.

An Asus handset has been spotted on the Geekbench website with the model number ASUS_AI2401_A. The listing, dated September 26 is believed to be that of the Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate, indicating that it might ship with Android 14. The listing shows 2,213 points in single-core testing and 7,048 points in multi-core testing. As per the listing, the handset could get 15.06GB of RAM, this could get translated to 16GB on paper.

Further, as per the listing, an octa-core chipset codenamed Pineapple with a base frequency of 2.26GHz will power the phone. It shows a prime CPU core with a maximum clock speed of 3.19GHz, five cores with a clock speed of 2.96GHz and two cores capped at 2.27GHz. These CPU speeds and codename could be associated with the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The upcoming chipset will succeed last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and Qualcomm is expected to announce it  at the Snapdragon Summit 2023 event in October.

There’s not a whole lot more that’s known about the Asus ROG Phone 8 Ultimate at this point, however, we can expect the handset to bring upgrades over the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. The latter is priced at Rs. 99,999 in India for the 16GB RAM + 512GB storage model.

Asus’s ROG Phone 7 Ultimate features a 6.78-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,448 ) AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 165Hz and a touch sampling rate of 720Hz. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC coupled with Adreno 740 GPU up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS4.0 internal storage. It has a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup and carries a 32-megapixel selfie unit. It is backed by a 6,000mAh battery with 65W wired fast charging support.
