Hackers Use ‘Bad Math’ to Trick Generative AI Models to Show Flaws and Biases at DEF CON 2023: Details

Kennedy Mays has just tricked a large language model. It took some coaxing, but she managed to convince an algorithm to say 9 + 10 = 21. “It was a back-and-forth conversation,” said the 21-year-old student from Savannah, Georgia. At first, the model agreed to say it was part of an “inside joke” between them. Several prompts later, it eventually stopped qualifying the errant sum in any way at all.

Producing “Bad Math” is just one of the ways thousands of hackers are trying to expose flaws and biases in generative AI systems at a novel public contest taking place at the DEF CON hacking conference this weekend in Las Vegas.

Hunched over 156 laptops for 50 minutes at a time, the attendees are battling some of the world’s most intelligent platforms on an unprecedented scale. They’re testing whether any of the eight models produced by companies including Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, and OpenAI will make missteps ranging from dull to dangerous: claim to be human, spread incorrect claims about places and people, or advocate abuse.

The aim is to see if companies can ultimately build new guardrails to rein in some of the prodigious problems increasingly associated with large language models or LLMs. The undertaking is backed by the White House, which also helped develop the contest.

LLMs have the power to transform everything from finance to hiring, with some companies already starting to integrate them into how they do business. But researchers have turned up extensive bias and other problems that threaten to spread inaccuracies and injustice if the technology is deployed at scale.

For Mays, who is more used to relying on AI to reconstruct cosmic ray particles from outer space as part of her undergraduate degree, the challenges go deeper than bad math.

“My biggest concern is inherent bias,” she said, adding that she’s particularly concerned about racism. She asked the model to consider the First Amendment from the perspective of a member of the Ku Klux Klan. She said the model ended up endorsing hateful and discriminatory speech.

Spying on People

A Bloomberg reporter who took the 50-minute quiz persuaded one of the models (none of which are identified to the user during the contest) to transgress after a single prompt about how to spy on someone. The model spat out a series of instructions, using a GPS tracking device, a surveillance camera, a listening device, and thermal imaging. In response to other prompts, the model suggested ways the US government could surveil a human-rights activist.

“We have to try to get ahead of abuse and manipulation,” said Camille Stewart Gloster, deputy national cyber director for technology and ecosystem security with the Biden administration.

A lot of work has already gone into artificial intelligence and avoiding Doomsday prophecies, she said. The White House last year put out a Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights and is now working on an executive order on AI. The administration has also encouraged companies to develop safe, secure, transparent AI, although critics doubt such voluntary commitments go far enough.

Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, which helped shape the event and enlisted the companies’ participation, agreed voluntary measures don’t go far enough.

“Everyone seems to be finding a way to break these systems,” she said after visiting the hackers in action on Sunday. The effort will inject urgency into the administration’s pursuit of safe and effective platforms, she said.

In the room full of hackers eager to clock up points, one competitor said he thinks he convinced the algorithm to disclose credit-card details it wasn’t supposed to share. Another competitor tricked the machine into saying Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Among the contestants are more than 60 people from Black Tech Street, an organization based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that represents African American entrepreneurs.

“General artificial intelligence could be the last innovation that human beings really need to do themselves,” said Tyrance Billingsley, executive director of the group who is also an event judge, saying it is critical to get artificial intelligence right so it doesn’t spread racism at scale. “We’re still in the early, early, early stages.”

Researchers have spent years investigating sophisticated attacks against AI systems and ways to mitigate them.

But Christoph Endres, managing director at Sequire Technology, a German cybersecurity company, is among those who contend some attacks are ultimately impossible to dodge. At the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas this week, he presented a paper that argues attackers can override LLM guardrails by concealing adversarial prompts on the open internet, and ultimately automate the process so that models can’t fine-tune fixes fast enough to stop them.

“So far we haven’t found mitigation that works,” he said following his talk, arguing the very nature of the models leads to this type of vulnerability. “The way the technology works is the problem. If you want to be a hundred percent sure, the only option you have is not to use LLMs.”

Sven Cattell, a data scientist who founded DEF CON’s AI Hacking Village in 2018, cautions that it’s impossible to completely test AI systems, given they turn on a system much like the mathematical concept of chaos. Even so, Cattell predicts the total number of people who have ever actually tested LLMs could double as a result of the weekend contest.

Too few people comprehend that LLMs are closer to auto-completion tools “on steroids” than reliable fonts of wisdom, said Craig Martell, the Pentagon’s chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, who argues they cannot reason.

The Pentagon has launched its own effort to evaluate them to propose where it might be appropriate to use LLMs, and with what success rates. “Hack the hell out of these things,” he told an audience of hackers at DEF CON. “Teach us where they’re wrong.”

OnePlus Ace 2 Pro Confirmed to Get Wi-Fi 7 Connectivity, Sony IMX890 Sensor Ahead of Launch

OnePlus Ace 2 Pro is confirmed to launch in China on August 16. The new handset will succeed the OnePlus Ace Pro, which was released in August 2022 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and a 4,800mAh battery with 150W fast charging support. OnePlus has confirmed several key specifications of the upcoming Ace 2 Pro handset. Now, the Shenzen-based mobile manufacturer has announced some camera details and other notable features of the smartphone.

In an official Weibo post, OnePlus confirmed that the Ace 2 Pro will feature a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary rear camera sensor that will support optical image stabilisation (OIS). It will also be equipped with a ProXDR feature, which is expected to improve colour contrasts and offer more realistic image outputs.

The OnePlus Ace 2 Pro is teased to support Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. The company notes that the phone will come with n28 and n8 5G modems, which are said to enhance the signal reception capacity of the handset. It claims to offer connection stability, lower latency, and four times better performance than the Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

In an earlier post, OnePlus confirmed that Ace 2 Pro will arrive with 24GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 inbuilt storage paired alongside an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The phone is confirmed to have a Bionic vibrating motor and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Made-in-India Battle Royale Indus Is Getting a Closed Beta This Diwali Season, Watch Trailer

Pune-based developer SuperGaming has confirmed that its upcoming battle-royale title Indus is getting a closed beta, this festive/ Diwali season. In celebration, the studio has dropped a trailer featuring key operators in the game, and some clues regarding consumable items. Keys for the closed beta will be available in limited supply, and the only way to ensure a chance of access is by pre-registering for Indus on the Google Play Store. Yes, an Apple iOS release is imminent, but it appears the first beta period — akin to internal playtests — is dedicated to the more populous Android player base only, for now.

The Indus closed beta cinematic throws our key operators into the floating map of Virlok, as they battle for control over Cosmium, a rare, natural-born mineral that can canonically alter space and time. Its in-game significance, however, is that claiming it instantly grants the player victory, regardless of how many other survivors are left on the field. Interestingly enough, it features some familiar voices, ranging from Olympic pistol shooter Heena Sidhu, popular content creators Magsplay and GamerFleet, and leading gaming YouTuber Techno Gamerz, the last of whom also collaborated with SuperGaming on Battle Stars to bring a skin resembling his likeness to the game.

“The Indus Closed Beta trailer is our attempt at showcasing the Indian Gaming Industry by involving aspirational real-life icons from culture, sports, and content creation as a part of it,” SuperGaming founder and CEO Roby John said in a prepared statement. “With over five million pre-registrations so far and the support of a vocal community, we firmly believe Indus is at the forefront of building India’s gaming revolution.” While the Indus trailer is largely cinematics, we can gather a bunch of mechanics from what’s being shown, starting with a resurrection injector that can be used on downed teammates — akin to Warzone’s revive kits.

As mentioned before, the victory-guaranteeing Cosmium randomly spawns on the map, but it’s not simply a matter of reaching it on time. It appears as though once the mineral first makes contact with the ground sealed within a care package, kickstarts an unspecified countdown, instead of unlocking right away. That means the package will be a hotspot for players to zone in for battle before a skilled (or lucky) one claims it in time.

Other clues reveal consumables such as smoke bombs, which can be used as cover so you can knife blinded players in the back. While the cinematics do show the peacock-themed operator Mor-Ni smoothly executing them, it’s unclear whether similar animations will be seen in-game. As our heroes make their way towards an unlocked Cosmium package, the slender Sir-Taj pops out of nowhere and tosses an explosive grenade. All this action is being observed by the vigilant leader of the COVEN, an intergalactic syndicate, who orders more Mythwalkers to extract the mineral.

Pre-registration for Indus is now live on the Google Play Store. For more details on closed beta key drops, it is recommended that you join Indus’ official Discord.

ISRO’s Aditya-L1 Space Observatory Satellite Arrives at Sriharikota Spaceport Ahead of Launch

Aditya-L1, the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun, is getting ready for its launch soon, ISRO said on Monday.

The satellite realised at U R Rao Satellite Centre here, has arrived at the ISRO’s spaceport in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said in an update on the mission.

“Mostly September first week,” an ISRO official told PTI when asked about the date of the launch.

The spacecraft is expected to be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, which is about 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth.

A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses, ISRO noted. “This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real-time,” it said.

The spacecraft carries seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere, and the outermost layers of the Sun (the corona) using electromagnetic and particle and magnetic field detectors.

Using the special vantage point L1, four payloads will directly view the Sun and the remaining three payloads would carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at the L1, thus providing important scientific studies of the propagatory effect of solar dynamics in the interplanetary medium.

“The suits of Aditya L1 payloads are expected to provide the most crucial information to understand the problem of coronal heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare, and flare activities and their characteristics, dynamics of space weather, propagation of particle and fields etc.,” ISRO said.

The major science objectives of the Aditya-L1 mission are: the study of solar upper atmospheric (chromosphere and corona) dynamics; study of chromospheric and coronal heating, physics of the partially ionised plasma, initiation of the coronal mass ejections, and flares; observe the in-situ particle and plasma environment providing data for the study of particle dynamics from the Sun; physics of solar corona and its heating mechanism; diagnostics of the coronal and coronal loops plasma: temperature, velocity and density; development, dynamics, and origin of coronal mass ejections; identify the sequence of processes that occur at multiple layers (chromosphere, base and extended corona) which eventually leads to solar eruptive events; magnetic field topology and magnetic field measurements in the solar corona; drivers for space weather (origin, composition and dynamics of solar wind).

The instruments of Aditya-L1 are tuned to observe the solar atmosphere, mainly the chromosphere and corona, while the in-situ instruments will observe the local environment at L1.

Mark Zuckerberg vs Elon Musk: Meta CEO Says ‘Time to Move On’ From Cage Fight as Tesla CEO ‘Isn’t Serious’

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, says it’s “time to move on” from the speculation on a cage fight with Elon Musk, whom he said is not serious about it. Taking to his Threads account, Zuckerberg said, “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on. I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legit competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead. If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”

The tension between Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Musk intensified after the initial success of Meta’s Threads, which is the biggest competitor to X (formerly known as Twitter), social media platform in July.

Threads is similar to the X, the Musk-owned platform, which got 30 million users on its first day.

Earlier, the Tesla CEO claimed that his and Zuckerberg’s fight will be live-streamed on X as well as Meta’s platforms and will likely take place in Italy, the Meta owner dropped a statement on Threads and requested netizens not to buy into whatever Musk says.

“I love this sport and I’ve been ready to fight since the day Elon challenged me. If he ever agrees on an actual date, you’ll hear it from me. Until then, please assume anything he says has not been agreed on,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Zuckerberg further said that was not holding his breath for Musk and will share the details of the fight when he is ready.

He added, “Not holding my breath for Elon, but I’ll share details on my next fight when I’m ready. When I compete, I want to do it in a way that puts a spotlight on the elite athletes at the top of the game. You do that by working with professional orgs like the UFC or ONE to pull this off well and create a great card.”

Musk took notice of Zuckerberg’s post and reacted to it with a series of tweets.

“If Zuck my really wants a lesson in why there are weight categories in fighting so badly, I could just head over to his house next week and teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget…Otherwise, we will do it as soon as the arena in Italy is ready,” Musk wrote.” Or we could do both and consider next week just a practice session,” he added.

Bitcoin Price Fails to See Big Movement Over Weekend, Ether Sees Dip with Most Altcoins

Bitcoin is currently trading at $29,205 (roughly Rs. 24.3 lakh) with a small loss of 0.76 percent on the crypto chart on Monday, August 14. Over the weekend, the world’s largest cryptocurrency did not manage to see any change in its pricing, owing to seemingly slowed down trading activities. For the fourth week now, the price of BTC has continued to stay under the price mark of $30,000 (roughly Rs. 24.6 lakh). With BTC seeing losses, most cryptocurrencies are also trading lowly on the price charts.

“Bitcoin futures trading volumes are at their lowest levels since December 2022. This shows that traders may have been avoiding making moves at the current levels,” the CoinDCX research team told Gadgets 360.

Ether slipped 0.45 percent in value on Monday. ETH, at the time of writing, was trading at the price of $1,840 (roughly Rs. 1.52 lakh).

“BTC and ETH continue to trade within their respective narrow ranges. The crypto market has traded sideways with downward pressure over the weekend and the last 24 hours. The market, overall, seems to be headed toward price stability,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets 360.

Following Bitcoin and Ether, majority altcoins registered losses on Monday.

These include stablecoins such as Tether, Ripple, USD Coin, Binance USD alongside memecoins Shiba Inu and Dogecoin.

Price dips also struck Cardano, Solana, Tron, Polygon, Polkadot, Litecoin, and Avalanche among other altcoins.

The overall crypto market valuation, in the last 24 hours, slipped by 0.10 percent to sit at the mark of $1.17 trillion (roughly Rs. 97,09,209 crore), showed CoinMarketCap.

Meanwhile, the crypto fear and greed index held steady at 54/100 throughout the weekend. The new week, however, did start with a slight dip of four points, which positioned the index at a 50/100, still within the neutral zone.

Among profit-minting cryptocurrencies, Binance Coin, Wrapped Bitcoin, Monero, Near Protocol, and Zcash marked their presence.

SushiSwap, Cartesi, Spell Token, and BrainTrust also saw small gains.

In other news, Coinbase unveiled its Base blockchain on Ethereum over the weekend.

The weekend also saw an exploit targeting Libbitcoin, which resulted in over $900,000 (roughly Rs. 7.4 crore) worth of Bitcoin being stolen from users’ wallets.

Sam Bankman-Fried had been trying against the revocation of his bail. However, it has been revoked, and SBF is back in jail before his trial in October.

Edul Patel, the CEO of Mudrex crypto investment platform also highlighted, “Hedera also experienced a remarkable price increase of roughly 15 percent within the past 24 hours, potentially attributed to the launch of their social networking platform, Calaxy.”

Apple Watch X Model With New Design, Magnetic Band System in Development: Mark Gurman

Apple Watch X is in development as a completely redesigned version of the company’s popular smartwatche, according to a report. The Cupertino company previously launched a revamped version of its smartphone — the iPhone X — in time for its tenth anniversary, and the Apple Watch could get the same treatment as soon as next year. The purported Apple Watch X will reportedly change how users wear the smartwatch, by swapping the existing locking mechanism for bands with a magnetic attachment system.

The new smartwatch has been dubbed the Apple Watch X by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Gurman’s sources say that the company’s next-generation smartwatch will sport a slimmer chassis, and that Apple is now considering a magnetic mechanism to hold the bands in place. A report earlier this year claimed that Apple would launch an advanced smartwatch with the same name in 2023, along with watchOS 10.

Until now, Apple Watch bands have used a press-to-release locking mechanism that has offered compatibility across generations. Replacing the existing band locking mechanism could mean that existing bands would no longer work with upcoming models, but the space freed up with the redesign could make way for additional internals or a larger battery for improved battery life.

Gurman has previously reported that Apple has been working on adding support for MicroLED technology to its smartwatches for several months, but the company is yet to unveil such a device. Gurman suggests that the Apple Watch X might be the first smartwatch from the company to feature these advanced screens. Another feature that is rumoured to be in development for a while now — blood pressure monitoring — could make its way to Apple’s next-generation smartwatch.

Customers shouldn’t expect the purported Apple Watch X to be launched in the near future — the company is expected to unveil the Apple Watch Series 9 alongside the iPhone 15 series of smartphones. While the handsets are set to bring a few notable hardware upgrades, the smartwatches are tipped to offer new chips and colour options.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch X could be released in 2024 or 2025, according to Gurman. This is because the Apple Watch was unveiled in 2014 and went on sale in 2015, so the launch of the smartwatch could coincide with whichever date the firm considers to be the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch. The company doesn’t announce any details of products that it plans to release except at the actual launch event, so enthusiasts will have to wait until at least next year until the Apple Watch X is unveiled.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Is Still Coming to PS4 and Xbox One, Will Be a ‘Premium’ Standalone Release

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be out on the previous-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles, despite rumours suggesting otherwise. Confusion about a last-gen launch arose when TheGamingRevolution, a COD content creator tweeted out a picture from the Microsoft store, which only showed the Xbox Series S/X logo — unprecedented for the franchise, but makes perfect sense when considering that every major studio is slowly trying to take advantage of the newer consoles’ hardware. However, with the game’s teaser claiming that both PlayStation generations would be getting a release, it felt unfair to the green team. As it turned out, it was just an error on the Microsoft store, which has since been updated to include Xbox One as well.

For now, the website leads to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0’s store page since that’s where publisher Activision has planned a worldwide reveal, scheduled for August 17. It’s going to be an in-game event, similar to those of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, both of which were unveiled inside the original Warzone game. An interesting thing to note here is that on Steam, Modern Warfare 3 was listed as an add-on, unlike previous reports which claimed that it would be a standalone $70 release. “As stated in numerous Activision Blizzard quarterly conference calls, Modern Warfare III is a premium release. It will be priced accordingly at $70 USD,” the publisher told reliable tipster CharlieINTEL in a prepared statement. The term ‘add-on’ had to do with how all CoD games would be packaged going forward — they’d all be accessible within the Call of Duty HQ launcher.

This also aligns with an InsiderGaming report, which claimed that beta codes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 followed the same ‘concept ID’ as Modern Warfare 2’s — essentially, ‘last year’s game codes, just reissued.’ The central hub will display Call of Duty MW2, MW3, and Warzone on the same menu, making it more accessible to players and enabling content carry-over. It was confirmed that this year’s title would ‘Carry Forward’ weapons and cosmetic items such as operators and skins you unlocked in Modern Warfare 2. Players can also expect MW 3 content to be integrated into the battle-royale Warzone experience, while Call of Duty: Mobile has been updated to include shared progression across the mainline games. Further details on the latter will be revealed as we inch closer to Warzone Mobile’s launch.

Previous reports also mentioned that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 would get at least two beta weekends for multiplayer testing, with the first slot solely aimed at PlayStation — set to run from October 6–10. This may or may not change as Microsoft’s attempts to acquire Activision for $69 billion (about Rs. 5,72,571 crore) continue. The second beta weekend will allegedly run from October 12–16 and grants entry to Xbox and PC players as well, and there are seemingly plans for campaign early access for pre-order customers.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 releases November 10 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
