New York Giants’ Brian Daboll not looking ahead, focused week-to-week

Saturday is usually a day off or a travel day for the New York Giants but since they aren’t playing until Monday night — at home against the Green Bay Packers — there was activity at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford.

Head coach Brian Daboll updated the media on the injuries of importance starting with tight end Daniel Bellinger, who is still at home battling an undisclosed illness.

“Came in, still not feeling good so he’s home,” Daboll said before outlining the rest of the injury list.

“Dexter (Lawrence II), but he practiced yesterday. He’s going to practice, yeah. And he did some team stuff yesterday, so that was good, but he’ll be questionable, but he’ll practice again today. A’Shawn (Robinson), I think he’ll be okay and Isaiah Simmons. So those will be the four players and then Evan (Neal), he will be out. I think that’s everybody.”

The Giants are going with rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback again this week. He was asked if this would be more than a week-to-week thing.

“I’d say I’m just focused on this week; we’re doing everything we can do to get ready. So do everything you can do to get ready to play this game, which is a big game against a really good football team, and really focused on that,” Dabes said.

Daboll was asked about his message to the team this week that they are still alive for a postseason berth.

“I try to take it week-to-week,” he said. “Again, I saw what Saquon (Barkley) said. Look, the only thing that we can control is going out there and playing and coaching as good as we can control.

“Try to focus on that, have a good week of preparation, have a good week of practice, do all the necessary things we need to do to go out there on Monday night against a good team that’s playing well and play as good as we can play. That’s where we’re at here.”

The Giants are coming off their bye and two straight wins before that, giving them some momentum heading into the final five games of the regular season.

Daboll explained what changes he made during the bye.

“We changed some of the stuff we do relative to the early parts of practice,” he said. “What the offense is working on, what’s the defense working on, how many reps we do. We do that every week. It’s really not much different because it’s a primetime game. There’s always discussions on how can we optimize and make use of the things we need to make use of.

“Whether it’s technique, whether it’s group work, whether it’s meeting time, practice time, how long the periods go, is it six reps? Is it eight reps? Is it five reps? So, we try to do that every week. It’s a little bit different though because it was the bye, then coming off the bye, then playing on a Monday night, then there’s the next part of it too after that. So, try to just do what we can to give ourselves the best chance.”

Giants’ Evan Neal out, Dexter Lawrence questionable vs. Packers

The New York Giants closed out their practice slate on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their third session in four days.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who is nursing a hamstring injury, was a practice participant for the second straight day (and third as a projected participant). Head coach Brian Daboll said he will be listed as questionable and stands a chance to play in Week 14.

Daboll was equally hopeful for fellow defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson, who has also been hobbled by a hamstring issue.

Meanwhile, tight end Daniel Bellinger missed his second consecutive day of practice due to an illness. He is questionable but should play assuming his health improves over the next 48 hours.

As anticipated, right tackle Evan Neal remains out and it’s unclear when (or if) he’ll return to the field this season.

Saquon Barkley says Giants are focused on making push for playoffs

This has been a trying season for the New York Giants (4-8) and their fans. The media pool that covers the team has been hard-pressed to put their finger on the pulse of exactly where and when the wheels came flying off the wagon on this team that was considered a playoff contender just three months ago.

One of the ‘go-to’ voices in the Giants’ locker room has been Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley, who has held the company line all year after the team failed to commit long-term to him this past offseason.

This week, Barkley was named the Giants’ nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award which goes to players who “excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact beyond the game in their communities.”

Barkley has had a fine season thus far despite missing three games due to an ankle injury and playing through a hyperextended elbow.

This week, he brushed aside his personal accomplishments to talk more about the Giants’ chances this season even though he may not be here in 2024.

“We’re in this, to be honest,” Barkley said of the Giants being just two games out of a wild card spot.

“I’m going to keep it real. We’re not looking too far, we’re not looking in on the hunt or the playoff pictures, but we take care of what we’ve got to take care of, everyone can say what they want about the season, but it’s week whatever and everything we want is still there. So, we don’t need any extra motivation. Every game is a critical game no matter what, but especially now.”

The Giants face the Green Bay Packers, who are currently riding a three-game winning streak and in the final wild card spot as of this week. Barkley talked about the current state of the Giants and their optimism at the moment.

“So, Monday night, you’ve got a team who’s hot. I think they what, won the last three or four games? And we won our last two games. No more excuses,” he said. “Tommy DeVito is not a rookie quarterback anymore. He’s going into his fourth start. Injuries, we’ve got guys getting healthier. Everything we want is there.

“We were a team last year that was able to find a way to make it into the playoffs, and that’s still our goal. Every team’s goal at the beginning of the season is to make it to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl, and statistically and mathematically we’re still in it.”

Barkley remains a bright spot in this otherwise dismal season and his outlook on life — both in and out of football — will be missed should he not return next season.

“I’m one of those guys that if I’m in a fight and I got my butt kicked for 11 rounds, the 12th round, in my head, if I still compete, if I could knock you out and get the win, then that’s how it’s going to happen,” he said. “So, I kept saying until we’re completely out of this thing I still believe. Even when you’re out of this thing, you’ve still got a job to do. It’s not too hard to look at. I don’t think it’s too hard to figure it out. That’s how I look at it and that’s what I firmly believe in.”

Keep the faith, Giant fans.

Dexter Lawrence limited in practice

The New York Giants returned to the field on Friday for their second of three full practices ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Once again, all eyes were on nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal.

As expected, Neal did not participate in practice and is unlikely to play on Monday night. However, as head coach Brian Daboll previously alluded, Lawrence saw his workload increase and could, potentially, be available against Green Bay.

Lawrence was officially limited, which was the same as his Thursday projection.

The Giants’ full Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (illness)

Limited participant: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle)

Full participant: QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), LB Carter Coughlin (hip)

Wink Martindale wants to return to New York Giants in 2024

For the first time since FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer dropped a bomb and reported that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale were on the outs, the latter spoke to reporters.

Taking the podium on Friday, Martindale dismissed the report (and those that came after it), suggesting that no one on the outside of the building has a clue what’s going on inside.

“Yeah,” Martindale said point-blank when asked if he’d like to return in 2024.

Martindale had previously stated that the Giants aren’t viewed as a stepping stone but rather, a destination. He’s offered up heavy praise for team ownership and isn’t back off of that now.

“I still am (raving about this organization),” Martindale told reporters. “The Maras and the Tischs and this organization. . . I’ve said that this is not a stepping stone (but) a destination and it still is.”

Martindale also stated that rebuilding a franchise is a lot like constructing a skyscraper in New York City. For most, watching the erection isn’t as enjoyable as taking in the finished product. And given the team’s struggles this season, a lot of these reports are likely built out of that frustration.

“When they built the big skyscrapers over there in the city, they were putting in the pilings, that’s not fun to watch. It’s fun to go see the building after it’s done,” Martindale said. “Right now we’re still putting in the pilings in Year 2.”

Still, Martindale said, he has no idea what the future may hold.

“No one knows (what the future holds),” Martindale said. “I could go grab my golf clubs and go play gold in Florida. Hopefully, it’s a raise. Don’t we all want raises? . . . You just don’t know what’s going to happen. I can’t predict the future.”

Ultimately, Martindale says his relationship with Daboll is unchanged from a year ago and the negative reports anger him. But in the meantime, he will continue to show up for work until his key card no longer works.

3 reasons for optimism in Week 14

The New York Giants will return from their bye week to host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Both teams are sporting a winning streak and the Packers are favored by nearly a touchdown heading into the Week 14 game.

The Packers are currently the final seed in the NFC playoff picture and certainly hope to remain in the hunt and control their own destiny moving forward.

Meanwhile, after two straight wins, although unlikely, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Big Blue to make the playoffs. However, they certainly have a lot of work to do in order to reach that goal.

Monday night’s matchup will go a long way toward both team’s playoff hopes.

Here are three reasons for optimism heading into Monday night’s matchup.

Al Bello/Getty Images

There is in the air at MetLife Stadium surrounding Tommy DeVito.

When DeVito was announced before the Giants’ Week 12 win against the New England Patriots, fans roared as the New Jersey native ran out of the tunnel.

Jersey sales are soaring for the Giants’ third-string quarterback and he has really given fans something to cheer about in the midst of a disappointing season.

Certainly, there have been some positives in DeVito’s play as a starter for Big Blue; including back-to-back wins, which likely led to him being named the starter earlier this week.

It hasn’t been perfect, but the fans are coming together around the story of the quarterback they call ‘Tommy Cutlets.’

Rob Carr/Getty Images

The Packers have not turned the ball over during their three-game winning streak.

The Giants’ defense will be a real test as they have won the turnover battle in three straight games and have forced nine turnovers during their two-game winning streak.

With the Packers playing the way they are, expect Wink Martindale to draw up some blitzes to get pressure on Jordan Love and make him uncomfortable to try and force the Packers to make a mistake.

Running back Aaron Jones and wide receiver Christian Watson are currently questionable for Monday’s game. Those are two pretty big playmakers to be in question for this matchup.

Even if either of them plays, they won’t be at 100% percent and certainly, that would be a big challenge for Love to overcome.

With some Green Bay playmakers banged up, the Giants’ defense could shine in this one.

Dexter Lawrence takes step toward return

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and then had off on Thursday ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

On Wednesday, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal were not participating due to their respective injuries.

Head coach Brian Daboll did express hope that Lawrence could return to practice on Friday, but shared far less optimism as it related to Neal.

“Yeah, I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful he’ll be out here on Friday. That’s what I’m hoping,” Daboll said told reporters.

True to his word, Lawrence took a projected step forward on Thursday and was listed as a projected participant in practice. Neal, on the other hand, remained out.

If Neal misses Monday night’s game, it will be his fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.

Meanwhile, Daboll indicated that tight end Darren Waller would remain on injured reserve (IR) for one more week and hinted that cornerback Aaron Robinson may not play at all this season.

“Not sure,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The Giants’ full (projected) Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Limited participant: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle)

Full participant: QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), LB Carter Coughlin (hip)
