Davante Adams turned down bigger deal from Packers to force his way out

Davante Adams took less money to go to the Las Vegas Raiders because he did not want to play for the Green Bay Packers anymore.

All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams was willing to take less money to go to the Las Vegas Raiders because he simply did not want to play for the Green Bay Packers any longer.

Although Adams grew up a Raiders fan and Derek Carr, his best friend from college, currently quarterbacks the Silver and Black, the news that Adams accepted less money to go to Las Vegas is very concerning. This came in the aftermath of Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander getting a massive extension. Ian Rapoport would go on to spell out the details of the whole situation during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

“The Packers offered Davante Adams a bigger deal over the first two years than the Raiders did … he just didn’t wanna be there,” said Rapoport on The Pat McAfee Show Monday.

Green Bay Packers: Davante Adams took less money from the Las Vegas Raiders

While the absence of a state income tax is a huge draw to Southern Nevada — as is the opportunity for Adams to play on his favorite childhood team with his best friend at quarterback — this says more about Green Bay than anything. Though he had a strong connection with Aaron Rodgers for years, their working relationship may not have been as strong as others previously indicated. Now, it’s over.

Given that Rodgers appears regularly on The Pat McAfee Show, as he is great friends with second-hour co-host A.J. Hawk from their playing days in Green Bay, one would think the recent developments surrounding Adams’ departure would be discussed during his next guest spot. Ultimately, the Packers’ window to advance to and win another Super Bowl shrinks considerably without Adams.

While there is no telling how another tumultuous offseason for the Packers and Raiders will impact their upcoming 2022 campaigns, Green Bay should win the NFC North yet again, and the Raiders should push for a playoff spot in the AFC. Very rarely does a wide receiver switch teams and the move impacts the overall viability of the two franchises, but most wide receivers are not the caliber of Davante Adams.

By leaving Green Bay, Adams made it clear that money was not the driving force to keep him around.

LeBron James responds to Tom Brady’s challenge for a 1-on-1 matchup

Tom Brady has come up with an interesting challenge for LeBron James. Who do you think would win this 1-on-1 matchup between these legends?

When presented with the opportunity to ask a question of one of the most impressive athletes the world has ever seen, Tom Brady decided to pose an interesting challenge for LeBron James.

While James was opening things up for a question and answer session on Twitter, Brady asked whether or not the Los Angeles Lakers star thought he could beat the legendary quarterback in an intriguing hockey challenge.

To be more specific, Brady asked who would win in a five-round, ice hockey shootout.

And when he had the opportunity, James made sure to respond to Brady’s hypothetical challenge.

Tom Brady challenges LeBron James to 1-on-1 ice hockey challenge

It shouldn’t be shocking that James would believe that he is capable of beating Brady in such an odd challenge. Of course, it appears as if James is interested in finding an alternative way of completing said challenge.

It should be noted that Brady, being another one of the most successful athletes in history, is also accomplished and impressive and talented. It’s safe to assume that he’d could potentially be able to win some sort of challenge such as this.

Who knows which of these legends would actually come out on top of this challenge? It would be fascinating to watch though. If we could actually get something like this live streamed for all to see, it’d be must-watch content.

How can we make something like this actually possible? Can we get more sports legends competing against each other in sports that neither of them play?

Steelers legend Jerome Bettis earns Notre Dame degree after 28 years

Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis got to walk at his Notre Dame graduation.

28 years since making a promise to his mother, Pittsburgh Steelers icon Jerome Bettis is officially a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Bettis would leave school a year early to pursue an NFL career. After initially playing with the Los Angeles Rams, Bettis became one of the most unforgettable running backs in league history while in Pittsburgh. He would go on to be a Pro Football Hall of Famer and retire as a Super Bowl champion in his hometown of Detroit. Now, he can say he is a graduate of a fantastic university.

Look at how happy Bettis is to be a member of the University of Notre Dame Class of 2022!

Jerome Bettis graduates from the University of Notre Dame after 28 years

It is not how you start, but how you finish. As it is with anything, life happens. Bettis was probably only a few credits shy of getting his college diploma. While he had great success on the gridiron in his playing career and off the field since retiring, his being able to check the box at 50 years old is still a tremendous accomplishment. This had to have been one the happiest days of his life.

More importantly, think about all the people Bettis will have inspired to go back and finish what they started. Many people for a varying number of reasons never graduate from college. This is why anytime somebody puts in the work to be a college graduate, they should be celebrated for it. Whether it is an associate’s, a bachelor’s, a master’s or a doctorate, the hard will have paid off.

Congratulations on being able to walk at a place that will always hold a special player in your heart.

Antonio Brown wants to retire with Steelers, but will they let him?

Antonio Brown apparently wants to retire as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Monday afternoon over Twitter, Antonio Brown made it abundantly clear that he wants to retire with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On paper, he should be a no-doubt Pro Football Hall of Famer. However, off-the-field issues and a tumultuous final few seasons in the league since leaving Pittsburgh somehow leave that up to chance. After taking his shirt off and exiting stage left at MetLife when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, no NFL team in their right mind will let Brown play another snap in the league.

Here is Brown’s initial tweet about wanting to retire with the Steelers on Monday afternoon.

He quickly followed that initial tweet up with this very important clarification on the issue.

Brown may want to retire with the Steelers, but will the proud football organization even let him?

Antonio Brown wants to retire with Pittsburgh Steelers, but will they let him?

It may be a simple gesture of gratitude by the Steelers organization to let Brown back in the building to sign a one-day contract to retire with Pittsburgh. Frankly, it should not be this divisive of an issue, but he burnt so many bridges along the way during his NFL career. If he ever does get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he would need a team like the Steelers to back him up.

No, he has not earned the right to ask for this, but it may mean the world to him if the Steelers organization complies. Regardless of what the team decides to do, they must move on from the previous era of Pittsburgh football if they want to give Kenny Pickett his best chance at success. By allowing Brown to retire a Steeler, it may afford Big Ben opportunities to complicate matters.

If the Steelers let Brown retire with them, they are taking ownership of all the good, bad and ugly that stemmed from his controversial playing career. As far as Ben Roethlisberger fallout, the Steelers allowing Brown to retire as a member of their organization may somehow convince Big Ben in his mind this is still his franchise and he can do whatever he wants. It is Pickett’s team now.

By letting Brown retire with the team, it says a lot about the Steelers organization, good and bad.

Sean McVay says Rams want Odell Beckham Jr. back

The Los Angeles Rams are preparing to defend their Super Bowl title. Will one of the team’s second-half sparks from 2021 be on the roster this season?

Back in February at SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles Rams rallied to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, in Super Bowl LVI. Two of the team’s late-season additions played pivotal roles in the victory. Edge-rusher Von Miller, obtained via trade from the Denver Broncos, had two sacks in the win. And wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., picked up after the Cleveland Browns released him, scored the game’s first touchdown via a 17-yard pass from Matthew Stafford.

Miller is now a member of the Buffalo Bills. Beckham remains an unsigned free agent due mainly to the fact that he was injured after his 35-yard reception in the Super Bowl. But there’s little doubt that the reigning NFL champions would like to see him return to the club.

“Oh, of course. I really want Odell back on our team,” stated head coach Sean McVay recently on the Rich Eisen Show (via Coral Smith of NFL.com). “He’s a guy that, in a short amount of time, we were able to develop a really special relationship. I thought he brought a great spark to our team. I thought he played really well…Without a doubt, want to get Odell back here. That’s the goal and continuing to work toward a solution of him re-signing with the Rams.”

In the final eight games of the regular season, Beckham was targeted 48 times and hauled in 27 passes for 305 yards and five scores. But he was even more pivotal during the Rams’ four-game postseason run. He saw 37 throws his way and totaled 25 receptions for 316 yards, scoring one touchdown apiece in the wild card win over the Cardinals and the Super Bowl victory over the Bengals.

“He is truly a great teammate, made so many impactful plays,” added the Super Bowl LVI champion head coach. “It was a shame to see him go down in that game but man, he sure still made an impact with those two catches that he did have.”

Along with Super Bowl LVI MVP Cooper Kupp and emerging Van Jefferson, the team added veteran Allen Robinson in free agency from the Chicago Bears. That’s an impressive trio. And a healthy Beckham could make this quite the quarter.

3 ways NFL screwed Minnesota over with 2022 schedule

Kevin O’Connell, Minnesota Vikings. (Photo by David Berding/Getty Images)

These three games could cost the Minnesota Vikings dearly on their 2022 season schedule.

Pencil in the Minnesota Vikings as one of the teams most likely to make the playoffs who did not a year ago in the NFL.

Minnesota employs a Pro Bowl-caliber franchise quarterback in Kirk Cousins. Not only that, but he finally has an offensive-minded head coach in the Twin Cities with Kevin O’Connell coming over from the Los Angeles Rams. O’Connell may be a first-time head coach, but he and Cousins have a previous working relationship from their time together in Washington. So things are looking up!

However, the NFL did the Vikings no favors with where it scheduled these three games for them.

Minnesota Vikings: 3 instances where the NFL made their schedule harder

3. Week 2: at Philadelphia Eagles (Monday, Sept. 19)

Admittedly, there are not a ton of questionable games on the Vikings’ schedule, but one that does stand out to some degree is who they are playing in Week 2. Minnesota will have to travel to the City of Brotherly Love to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. This is the second of two non-early-window starts for Cousins. Two losses may only add to his “narrative”.

Although the Vikings have all offseason to prepare for the arch rival Green Bay Packers coming to town in Week 1, they only have a week to adjust to whatever Nick Sirianni and the boys come up with in Philadelphia. One could argue this game could potentially decide playoff positioning at regular season’s end. Expect for the head-to-head tiebreaker to carry weight later in the season.

Cousins may have a strong history with the Eagles from his time in Washington, but Minnesota does not play them as frequently. Therefore, there is a decent chance the Vikings could start the year out at 0-2. Conversely, they could be 2-0 heading into Week 3’s home game vs. the division rival Detroit Lions. An extra day to prepare certainly helps, but their first two games are not easy.

This is why it is imperative for Cousins to have a strong first quarter of the season for the Vikings.

Packers DB breaks record with new extension

The Green Bay Packers have signed Jaire Alexander to a four-year contract extension, including a record signing bonus for the position.

Alexander was set to play on his fifth-year option, in which he would have earned $13 million. However, the veteran cornerback and his agent were not content with that situation, and approached Green Bay about a possible extension earlier this offseason.

Green Bay agreed, and would surely rather have the Louisville product in the building long-term, rather than having him hit the open market via free agency next offseason. So, the Packers inked Alexander to an extension on Monday morning.

Jaire Alexander contract with Packers

Alexander’s contract is a four-year, $84 million deal, which includes $31 million in 2022 with a $30 million signing bonus.

If that signing bonus sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. Alexander’s bonus is the highest ever for a player at his position. Per Adam Schefter, when combined with his fifth-year option, he’ll receive $42.5 million by next March.

https://mobile.twitter.com/PFF/status/1526212823692492800

Alexander’s cap hit for this year will be just over $1 million. So to recap; some cap gymnastics by Brian Gutekunst helped make Alexander the highest-paid DB in the NFL, but also allowed the Packers not to be over the cap this season.

And that’s why he’s qualified to be the GM, folks.

Rams bring back Troy Hill, draft four DBs to replenish secondary – NFL Nation

In an offseason of upheaval in the Los Angeles Rams‘ secondary, cornerback Jalen Ramsey remains the constant. The group’s best player, sure, but also the team’s most vocal and enthusiastic recruiter.

Which is why it was no surprise to see Ramsey take to Twitter during the NFL draft encouraging Rams fans to “blow up” the mentions of then free-agent safety Tyrann Mathieu. Alas, Ramsey’s pursuit of Mathieu didn’t go far, as he signed with the New Orleans Saints.

Absent that one big move, the Rams weren’t shy about making plenty of other additions to a secondary that lost cornerback Darious Williams to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.

Headlining the list was a trade that made Ramsey quite happy, as the Rams sent a 2023 fifth-round selection to the Cleveland Browns to re-acquire cornerback Troy Hill. Yes, the same Hill who played for the Rams from 2016-20 before signing a two-year, $9 million deal with Cleveland last offseason is back in the fold after the Rams struggled to replace him last season.

Armed with seven picks on Day 3 of the draft, the Rams spent four of those choices on defensive backs, adding South Carolina State cornerback Decobie Durant in the fourth round, UCLA safety Quentin Lake (sixth round), Georgia cornerback Derion Kendrick (sixth round) and Kansas State safety Russ Yeast (seventh round).

“DB was definitely something we were going to strategically target,” Rams general manager Les Snead said. “There was a moment where players that we liked were still on the board and let’s double down, triple down.”

If nothing else, Hill’s return gives the Rams needed stability and versatility to complement Ramsey as the Rams sort through other options that include the aforementioned rookies and the likes of David Long Jr., Robert Rochell, Grant Haley and Tyler Hall.

Because Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris likes to use Ramsey all over the defense, Hill’s ability to do a little of everything should also come in handy.

“He’s a guy that played really good football for us,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “I think just the overall production, the position flexibility, the ability to play that nickel, the star position and be able to play outside and, as they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder. … Being able to get him back, he was excited and I know the players are excited to get him back here with us as well.”

Hill enjoyed a breakout season with the Rams in 2020 in which he posted three interceptions, 10 passes defended and scored a league-high three defensive touchdowns. In 12 games with the Browns, Hill had no interceptions and just one pass defended.

While Hill said he enjoyed the people he met in Cleveland, he said he learned “the grass is never as green on the other side” in his year away from the Rams.

“Even when I was in Cleveland, I always found myself trying to compare things to how it was done over here in L.A.,” Hill said. “I don’t know if it was me more so just trying to compare as far as this is what a winning program [does], or if I was just missing everything that was happening over here.”

As for the rookies, immediate playing time will likely have to come in the form of special teams, but each brings something different to the table the Rams could tap into if needed.

Regardless of how it shakes out in the near term, Snead believes that making the secondary the first priority in this draft will pay off over the long haul.

“I often say in some draft classes where it’s very similar to a mutual fund where OK you are going to bring in a lot of players with different skill sets, genres, and you put them in the room and it just becomes a very competitive and obviously deeper room,” Snead said.

3 ways NFL screwed Kansas City over with 2022 schedule

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The Kansas City Chiefs will have one of the hardest schedules in the NFL this upcoming season.

If the Kansas City Chiefs want to play deep into the postseason, they will have to navigate an incredibly difficult regular-season schedule first.

Even if the AFC West faces the NFC West in its entirety this season, the NFL did not do the Chiefs any favors with their first-place schedule. Though drawing the AFC South in its intra-conference rotation helps, getting the Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of the competitive balance portion of the schedule does not make things the least bit easy.

Here are three instances where the NFL decided to make things even more difficult for the Chiefs.

Kansas City Chiefs: 3 instances where the NFL did not do them any favors

3. Week 7: at San Francisco 49ers (Sunday, Oct. 23)

There is no way around it. The Chiefs’ first eight games are absolutely brutal. They become the first team in NFL history whose first eight opponents finished the previous year above .500. The “worst” teams they play in this stretch are the Indianapolis Colts and the Los Angeles Chargers, both of whom missed the playoffs with 9-8 records. At least the Chiefs have a bye during Week 8.

The final game the Chiefs will play before the bye will be at the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. While San Francisco is one of a handful of teams that offer great variance this season, it would be more shocking than not if they were to fall off a cliff. The 49ers may roll with Trey Lance as the starting quarterback over Jimmy Garoppolo, but they still employ Kyle Shanahan as head coach.

After an immensely difficult first six games of the season, the Chiefs will have to make the trek to the Bay Area to take on this Super Bowl contender out of the NFC West. Keep in mind this game comes the week after the rematch of the AFC Divisional Round barnburner between the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead. With the bye week in sight, this Week 7 affair feels like a prime letdown game.

Taking a loss heading into the bye week will leave a bitter taste in all of Chiefs Kingdom’s mouth.

Chiefs rookie and admitted former Browns fan ditches all bias

It’s tough for any rookie coming into the NFL to drop their childhood fandom, but it’s necessary to survive and thrive in the business for Chiefs rookie Mike Rose.

Rose came in as an undrafted free agent from Iowa State, but his roots are in Brecksville, Ohio, which is a suburb of Cleveland. So, it’s easy to see how Rose grew up a Browns fan, and maintained that fandom during his college years at ISU.

Unfortunately — or fortunately, depending on how you look at it — Rose was not drafted by Cleveland, instead forced to find a new home as a UDFA. When the Chiefs came calling, he jumped at the opportunity.

“I definitely grew up a Browns fan but as this became more reality to me, obviously you can’t pick favorites,” Rose said. “A lot of waiting, but I think every team had their different reason for passing up on me…I’m just super glad to have an opportunity here at this great organization. I’m just looking forward to doing my thing in minicamp and making the 53.”

What can Mike Rose bring to the Kansas City Chiefs?

Rose was a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 winner and earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2020. He’s the kind of decorated college player who rarely goes undrafted, and now has a giant chip on his shoulder.

Making the roster won’t be easy for Rose. The top of the linebacking corps includes Willie Gay Jr., Nick Bolton and Leo Chanal. Behind those three are veterans Darius Harris, Jermaine Carter Jr., and Elijah Lee. If Rose is to beat out even half of the names on that list, he’ll have to make quite the impression in minicamp and beyond.

“I wasn’t highly recruited out of high school,” Rose said. “I had to earn my spot in college. This chip on my shoulder and being counted out, it doesn’t feel all too different to me honestly.”

If anything, that sort familiarity and mentality should work out in Rose’s favor.
