Global Refurbished Smartphone Shipments Saw 15 Percent Surge in 2021: Report

The Refurbished Global Smartphone market saw a surge in demand as well as supply in 2021, according to a report. Refurbished smartphone shipments have witnessed a 15 percent yearly growth, whereas new smartphone shipments grew 4.5 percent in the year. It could be seen that the larger consumer section has shown more inclination towards buying refurbished smartphone models of popular brands like Apple and Samsung in 2021.

According to the Counterpoint’s “Refurbished Smartphone Tracker”, Latin America and India lead with the highest growth rates, at 29 percent and 25 percent respectively. Apple remained the secondary refurbished market leader, whereas Samsung witnessed the most refurbished model shipments in 2021.

Consumers seem to get attracted towards choosing the pre-owned devices thanks to additional benefits and options for the same, as per the report.

Commenting on the growth, Senior Analyst Glen Cardoza said, “Refurbished smartphones are a part of overall pre-owned devices which re-enter the system through various routes. Trade-ins are the fastest-growing source for such pre-owned smartphones, the volume of which grew more than 10 percent globally in 2021. We are seeing a YoY increase in volumes among refurbished players in developing markets like China, India, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. These markets will grow more as they have many unorganised businesses and a large rural demographic yet to be captured. ASPs (average selling prices) of refurbished smartphones increased marginally as 4G devices still retained value.”

Moreover, there were supply shortages in the secondary market in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdowns, but the market surged back in 2021.

F1 22 Announced, Releasing July 1; to Feature VR Support on PC, Updated Gameplay, More

F1 22 — the official game for the ongoing 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship — will be released on July 1, Electronic Arts announced on Thursday. The successor to F1 2021 will let players race in the latest season with redesigned cars, updated rules, and gameplay options. Gamers will also be able to test out the new Miami International Autodrome. The PC version of the game also comes with VR compatibility, but there’s no word from EA on whether F1 22 will come with PSVR support.

In an announcement posted to the official website on Thursday, EA revealed that F1 22 will be released July 1 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and on PC via the EA App, Origin, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Gamers who pre-order the F1 22 Champions Edition will be able to access the game three days earlier — on June 28.

As part of the updated gameplay coming to F1 22, gamers will be able to customise formation laps, safety car periods, and pit stops. This year, EA has also added F1 sprint races. Gamers will have access to the new Miami International Autodrome with 19 corners, along with new cars and a revamped handling model, according to EA.

Unlike previous releases — including F1 2021 — the upcoming F1 22 title will offer VR compatibility for immersive gameplay on PC, via Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. As previously mentioned, EA is yet to reveal whether the game will come with PSVR support. Meanwhile, gamers will also be able to access My Team and Career Mode with two-player split screen and online multiplayer, as well as a new hub called F1 Life, where they can show off supercars, clothing, and accessories unlocked while playing the game.

The game is available to pre-order at Rs. 2,999 for PC, Rs. 4,499 and Rs. 3,999 for PS5 and PS4 on the PlayStation Store, and Rs. 4,999 and Rs. 3,999 for the Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One, respectively. The F1 22 Champions Edition is priced at Rs. 4,299 for PC, Rs. 5,499 on the Xbox Store, and Rs. 5,299 on the PlayStation Store.

Pre-ordering the game before May 16 will also grant gamers access to Miami-themed content including livery, suit, helmet, gloves, a cap, t-shirt and wall art designed by a local artist. Meanwhile, the F1 22 Champions Edition will grant access to the game three days before the release date along with F1 22 New Era content, a F1 Life Starter Pack, new My Team Icons, and 18,000 PitCoin, according to EA.

On PC and consoles, you can get limited-time access to F1 22 with the EA Play subscription that costs Rs. 315 per month in India. Alternatively, you can get full unlimited access to the game on PC with the EA Play Pro subscription that comes in at Rs. 999 per month in India. EA Play also offers early access.

F1 22 — now using the same truncated year-styling like EA’s other annual games, following Codemasters’ acquisition — is out July 1 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. It can be played in VR with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 Foldable Phone Launch Date Confirmed for April 28; Renders, Specifications Leaked

Huawei Mate Xs 2 launch date has been set for April 28. Huawei, via Weibo, has confirmed the arrival of the new foldable smartphone in its home country. Huawei Mate Xs 2 is expected to succeed the Huawei Mate Xs that was released back in February 2020. Separately, specifications and alleged renders of the foldable smartphone have surfaced online. The upcoming foldable handset is said to be available in three distinct colour options. The renders show a hole-punch display at the front to house the selfie shooter. Huawei Mate Xs 2 is tipped to come with a triple rear camera setup helmed by a 50-megapixel sensor.

As we mentioned, Huawei has announced that the Huawei Mate Xs 2 will launch on April 28. The launch event will be held in China at 7pm local time (4:30pm IST), as per a teaser poster shared (in Chinese) by the company on Weibo. The poster carries the tagline: “The face worth seeing”(translated). Huawei hasn’t revealed any specifications about the smartphone yet.

Meanwhile, a Twitter user named Geek_Cao (@GeekCao) has leaked the alleged renders and a few specifications of the Huawei Mate Xs 2 ahead of the official launch. According to the tipster, Huawei’s upcoming foldable phone will be offered in three different colours — Black, White, and Purple. In the leaked renders, it is seen to have a hole-punch display design. Huawei is expected to add multiple buffer layers on the latest foldable phone to ensure protection from accidental drops. As per the leak, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 will feature a triple rear camera unit headlined by the 50-megapixel main sensor. The camera setup could include a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor as well as an 8-megapixel telephoto camera.

Earlier, a Huawei foldable handset thought to be the Huawei Mate Xs 2 had surfaced on China’s TENAA website and China Compulsory Certification (3C) listing with model number PAL-AL00. The listing suggests that the phone will have 4G connectivity with dual-SIM support. HarmonyOS 2.0.1 operating system and 4,500mAh battery are the other suggested specifications. It could be powered by the Kirin 9000 4G SoC.

OnePlus 10 Specifications Leak Tips 150W Fast Charging, 50-Megapixel Triple Rear Cameras

OnePlus 10 specifications have been leaked. The OnePlus smartphone is expected to be the vanilla model in the OnePlus 10 series, and a successor to last year’s OnePlus 9. It is reported to come equipped with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, and is said to come with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage. As per a tipster, the OnePlus smartphone is being tested with both a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, and a MediaTek Dimensity chipset. It is said to feature 150W fast charging support, and a 50-megapixel primary camera.

OnePlus 10 specifications (rumoured)

The information about the OnePlus 10 specifications comes from tipster OnLeaks aka Steve Hemmerstoffer who collaborated with Digit. The tipster says that the OnePlus 10 will likely run on the “latest version of OxygenOS 12” which will be based on Android 12. It is said to come with a 6.7-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, and LTPO 2.0 technology for variable refresh rate.

OnLeaks says that the rumoured OnePlus 10 has two prototypes. While one is being tested with a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC (likely Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+), the other one is being tested with a MediaTek 9000 chipset. This suggests that the phone is currently in early stages of development, and as per the report, it could make its debut in the second half of 2022. Furthermore, it could be offered with an option to choose from 6GB/8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB storage.

Recently, tipster Yogesh Brar claimed that the OnePlus 10 will be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC.

For photography, the OnePlus 10 is claimed to get a triple rear camera setup headlined by a 50-megapixel primary sensor. A 16-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a 2-megapixel macro camera will accompany the main shooter, the Digit report says. On the front, the phone could come with a 32-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls. The cameras are expected to get Hasselblad colour calibration.

As per leaked information, the OnePlus 10 will pack a 4,800mAh battery with support for 150W fast charging. The phone may also not get the alert slider.

STEPN to new highs? GMT price painting first ‘bull flag’ toward $5 target

STEPN (GMT) has rallied strongly against the U.S. dollar this week as it looks likely to form a classical bullish technical pattern called the “bull flag.”

GMT eyes more upside

GMT’s price rose 30% week-to-date, including a strong rally to establish an all-time high near $3.85 followed by a relatively modest correction to nearly $3. In particular, the correction phase occurred inside a descending parallel channel, raising possibilities that the price would eventually break out of it to the upside.

That is precisely because traditional analysts consider strong run-ups, followed by range-trapped price corrections, as bullish continuation setups. And the one GMT has been painting — a bull flag, as mentioned above — could lead to an upside boom in the weeks ahead, as shown in the chart below.

GMT/USD 4-hour price chart featuring ‘bull flag’ setup. Source: TradingView

As a general rule, traders realize a bull flag target by measuring the previous uptrend’s height and projecting it from the breakout point. Applying the classic setup on GMT’s chart shows that it now eyes a run-up above $5, about 65% above today’s price.

Bull flags’ success rate of meeting their upside targets sits near 64%, according to Thomas Bulkowski, a veteran investor and analyst.

But the risk of a drop toward $2 becomes high if the GMT’s price breaks below the bull flag’s lower trendline, the last line of support, which coincides with the 50-4H exponential moving average (50-4H EMA; the red wave) at $2.91.

STEPN’s 38,000% gains ‘an absolute joke’?

GMT surged by nearly 38,000% in less than two months, amid the hype surrounding STEPN’s “move-to-earn” economic model that rewards its app’s users with a native currency, called Green Satoshi Token (GST), for merely moving.

STEPN generates revenues (it made $26.81 million in Q1/2022) via the sales of its so-called “NFT Sneaker” — a unique digital image whose ownership enables players to earn GST in the first place. The game uses the proceeds first to buy and then burn GMT, thus creating upward pressure on its prices if the demand for the token goes up.

Independent market analyst Wangarian believes the hype around STEPN looks similar to what Axie Infinity (AXS), a play-to-earn gaming metaverse, witnessed in May 2021. AXS/USD rallied from around $2.50 to about $178 between May and November last year.

Fellow independent market analyst Michaël van de Poppe, however, fears that GMT’s market capitalization, which sits near $1.9 billion — with a fully diluted valuation of around $18 billion — is an “absolute joke.”

But GMT “valuations can still become ridiculous,” he adds, owing to STEPN’s marketing tactics.

This Earth Day analysts say Bitcoin mining is naturally gravitating to green energy

April 22 is Earth Day and with environmental sustainability one of the key topics in the global debate surrounding Bitcoin mining, analysts say the industry has begun to naturally gravitate towards cleaner and cheaper energy sources.

According to a January report by the Bitcoin Mining Council, by Q4 2021, the global Bitcoin mining industry ran on an estimated 58.5% renewable energy.

The preference for clean energy is due to a combination of environmental conscientiousness, political pressures, and an eye on the bottom line. It’s resulting in a sea change that could have ripple effects that extend well beyond Bitcoin (BTC) mining onto power grid systems around the world.

Bitcoin miners in Norway are cleaner than almost anywhere else on the planet thanks to the country’s access to hydropower and other renewables. In fact, 100% of Norway’s electricity is generated from renewable energy.

Of Norway’s 157 Terrawatt hours (TWh) of power produced per year, 88% is from hydroelectric, with wind and thermal force making up the remainder.

Miners use that renewable energy to produce about 1% of the total Bitcoin hashrate according to data from blockchain research firm CoinShares.

Norway contributes about 1% o the total Bitcoin hashrate: CoinShares

Mas Nakachi is Managing Director of Miami-based XBTO Group’s Bitcoin mining operation XBTO. Founded in 2015, XBTO’s mining operation takes in upwards of $25 million per year and claims to be completely powered by renewable energy sources.

He believes “hydropower is one of the most reliable renewable energy sources available to us.”

Wind power depends on the weather and solar power depends on daylight, but rivers can flow all day every day — and in various locales water can be pumped uphill during off peak periods as a way to store excess energy to run generators when needed. Nakachi told Cointelegraph that:

“Harnessing hydroelectric power has remained an effective mechanism to maintain the most efficient mining possible.”

Whereas a Feb. study published in the Energy Research & Social Science journal concluded “cryptocurrency is unsustainable by design,” Nakachi believes there is a simple path for mining operations to develop both an economically and environmentally sustainable model:

“Prioritizing some form of clean energy to power the majority of operations is, in the long term, a sustainable model for successful mining operations.”

As reported by Cointelegraph, another option being explored in Texas is the utilization of flexible data centers which can switch from the public grid to temporarily generating its own clean energy from dedicated energy generators to relieve stress on the grid during periods of high retail demand.

Related: Marathon Digital moves Montana BTC mine to pursue carbon neutrality

Tech entrepreneur and self-proclaimed environmentalist Daniel Batten described a multi-pronged way in which the Bitcoin mining industry is creating positive change on the April 22 podcast from Brave New Coin. Batten argued that Bitcoin mining incentivizes building renewable energy plants and helps decarbonize power grids.

Batten believes Bitcoin mining drives increased demand for electricity and therefore investments in renewable energy plants. Mining is suited to intermittent power sources and it can be easily moved to far flung locales to take advantage of excess generation of renewable electricity.

The only problem that Batten sees is that the industry may not be big enough to incentivize all the renewable energy required:

“My only real concern is ‘Is Bitcoin mining requiring enough electricity to help us build up that grid to the extent we need to?’”

PS5 India April 22 Restock: How to Pre-Order PlayStation 5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Gran Turismo 7 Bundle

PS5’s April restock is here. Today at 12pm noon, both variants of Sony’s elusive next-gen console — the Rs. 49,990 Blu-ray-equipped PS5, and its Rs. 39,990 disc-less counterpart PS5 Digital Edition — will be up for pre-orders in India. Alongside, some retailers will also offer a Rs. 54,490 bundle of the Blu-ray PS5 and Gran Turismo 7 that represents a Rs. 499 saving if you were to buy them separately. Gran Turismo 7 released at the start of March — to heavy backlash from fans owing to microtransactions and grind-based economy — so Sony India has taken its sweet time in offering this bundle. To me, it looks like a case of Sony trying to offload copies of Gran Turismo 7 that have remained unsold.

If you are trying to buy PlayStation 5 online, you can do that on Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, Game Loot, Games The Shop, Reliance Digital, Sony Center, and Vijay Sales. You can also check out game stores near you. Though as has been the case for over a year now — the PS5 celebrated its first birthday in India earlier in 2022 — the big concern is whether you can actually manage to buy one, given Sony India’s continued inventory struggles.

The April 22 PlayStation 5 restock is just the 15th time Sony’s flagship console is being made available for pre-orders in India, since its launch last February. Its Blu-ray-devoid sibling PS5 Digital Edition has fared even poorly, with this being only the ninth time interested buyers have had the opportunity to pre-order one. Of course, that is far from the only hassle with buying a PlayStation 5 in India. Every single time, the likes of Croma and Games The Shop have shown themselves to be unable to handle the load. Even Amazon has had trouble a few times. Additionally, Croma, Flipkart and Reliance Digital are also known for cancelling PS5 pre-orders due to their own technical challenges.

And while there have been no restrictions on deliveries for a while now, Sony Center website ShopAtSC continues with its COVID-19 boilerplate: “We intend to deliver your allocated stocks around 30th April 2022 and onwards — however please expect a delay in our delivery services which might get impacted due to regulations imposed by lockdown/ curfew in your locations.” Expect the rest of the official PS5 online retailers — Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, GameLoot, Games The Shop, Reliance Digital, and Vijay Sales — to be in line with Sony Center’s estimates. Though at times, we have seen some online retailers ship out their PS5 pre-orders prior to the announced delivery date.

Cruel Summer Season 2: Check Out the Big Changes Coming

Cruel Summer is building another mystery.

The hit Freeform show has announced plans for season two, set to premiere later this year, which will feature an entirely new storyline and cast.

Set in the Pacific Northwest, the season will follow “the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship…from three different timelines surrounding Y2K,” according to the network. The first season of the show gave us a ’90s nostalgia fix and now it looks like it’s time to reckon with the turn of the century.

Cruel Summer‘s season two release date has not been revealed.

The cast will be led by The Goldergs’ Sadie Stanley, American Vandal‘s Griffin Gluck and newcomer Eloise Payet

The series will also feature a Private Practice reunion, as both KaDee Strickland and Paul Adelstein, who played husband and wife Charlotte and Cooper on the hit ABC medical drama from 2007-2013, are both set to appear in season two.

That’s not all!

Private Practice heads (it’s a thing, trust us) will recognize that Gluck played Strickland and Adelstein’s son Mason on seasons five and six of the show. Somebody call Kate Walsh
