Spotify to Test Full Music Videos for Premium Subscribers in Potential YouTube Faceoff

Swedish music streaming company Spotify is rolling out full-length music videos in a limited beta launch for premium subscribers, venturing into an arena that YouTube has dominated for nearly two decades.

Music videos will be available to premium users in the UK, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya, in beta starting on Wednesday, the company said, as it attempts to grow its user base.

While it aims to reach 1 billion users by 2030, Spotify’s new plan faces competition from Apple Music and Alphabet’s YouTube, which allows users to watch music videos for free.

Spotify’s roll-out will include a “limited catalog of music videos, including hits from global artists like Ed Sheeran … or local favorites like Aluna,” it said.

In March last year, Spotify had introduced “clips”, under-30-second vertical videos that are uploaded directly to Spotify for artists.

The company has also expanded its offerings to include podcasts and audiobooks in a bid to attract more users.

In February, it forecast premium subscribers would reach 239 million in the current quarter, above estimates of 238.3 million.

In January, Spotify said users in Europe would be able to buy audiobooks and subscription plans from within the music-streaming app from March as a result of the region’s new competition law for Big Tech.

The move would help the company avoid Apple’s 30 percent fee for purchases through its App Store, which has long been a source of contention between app developers and the tech giant.

Spotify has for years been in embroiled in a legal battle, alleging that it was forced to raise the price of its monthly subscriptions to cover costs tied to Apple’s App Store rules.

Prime Video has entered a distribution agreement with Sony Pictures Television (SPT), a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), to launch an add-on subscription on the streamer for viewers in India.

Sony Pictures – Stream will offer SPE’s movies and shows on Prime Video Channels and its subscribers for an add-on introductory annual subscription of Rs. 399.

“We are delighted to launch Sony Pictures – Stream, a new Prime Video Channel curated specifically for our customers in India.

“The collaboration allows Sony Pictures Entertainment to make their vast and beloved library available in India at a single destination, reaching customers across the length and breadth of the country via Prime Video Channels,” said Vivek Srivastava, head – Prime Video Channels, India.

Sonika Bhasin, Vice President – South Asia, Sony Pictures Television, said with the partnership with Prime Video, Indian audiences can have access to content from SPE’s extensive library of award-winning films and critically acclaimed television series.

“Additionally, in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Columbia Pictures, a part of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Pictures – Stream spotlights the studio’s history and incredible film legacy by offering customers an incredible array of films from the studio’s beloved vault spanning the decades,” Bhasin added.

Netflix Won’t Offer Dedicated Apple Vision Pro App Unlike Most Major Streaming Platforms: Report

Netflix won’t release a standalone app designed for the Apple Vision Pro when the device is launched in the US next month, according to a report. The streaming platform’s app is available on Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS operating systems. Apple also allows app developers to update the tablet versions of their apps to work with visionOS, but it looks like Netflix subscribers will not be able to access the platform’s content via an app when the headset makes its debut in the coming days.

Bloomberg reports that Netflix will not offer a dedicated app for customers who purchase Apple’s $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) spatial computer when it arrives in the US on February 2. The company told the publication that just like subscribers who watch Netflix using a web browser on Mac computers, users will have to stream their content without a standalone app on the Vision Pro headset.

Netflix users will face a few limitations when watching content on the Vision Pro, according to the report, including no offline download support, limited video quality settings, and no “Environments” which means that you won’t be able to watch content with an immersive background. The service also severely limits streaming quality on browsers like Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera — Safari (macOS 11 or later) and Microsoft Edge support streaming at 4K resolution.

The world’s most popular streaming platform was the most significant absentee on Apple’s list of streaming services that would offer dedicated apps on the Vision Pro headset. On Wednesday, the company announced that several streaming apps would be supported on the Vision Pro, including Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Discovery+, Disney+, ESPN, Fubo, IMAX, MLB, MUBI, Max, NBA, PGA Tour, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Red Bull TV, TikTok, and Tubi.

Customers who purchase the Apple Vision Pro will also have access to 150 3D movies including Avatar: The Way of Water, Dune, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The headset allows wearers to watch videos in 2D and 3D along with Spatial Audio, according to Apple.

However, the lack of a standalone Netflix app for the Apple Vision Pro at launch will mean the upcoming headset — with its $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) price tag — might be a little less appealing for customers who were looking for a more immersive way to watch their favourite TV shows. It remains to be seen whether Netflix changes its stance if the Vision Pro is launched in other markets outside the US.

IPL 2023 Begins on March 31 in India: All You Need to Know

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 begins on March 31 in India, with the BCCI-run tournament returning to its traditional home-away stadium format this year after modifications and venue changes were implemented in its previous editions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The popular league cricket tournament, which includes 10 teams fighting to become champions, is currently in its 16th edition and sees Gujarat Titans return as defending champions. Notably for viewers, there are major changes to the streaming experience, with JioCinema taking over as the streaming platform for IPL from 2023 onwards.

IPL 2023: Tournament format, dates, and timings

IPL 2023 will follow the traditional league format for much of the tournament, with each team playing every other team once at home, and once away. The four top teams after the league stage will progress to the playoffs, where the first and second-placed teams have a distinct advantage over the third and fourth-placed teams.

The IPL 2023 will take place from March 31 to May 28, with the final set to take place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat — the home venue of the defending champions Gujarat Titans. During the league stage, teams will play primarily at their traditional home venues, although some matches are scheduled to take place in Guwahati, Assam and Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh as denoted home venues for Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings respectively.

League stage matches will take place every day (at least one match per day) from March 31 to May 21, with most matches starting at 7:30pm. However, some matches will start at 3:30pm, so keep a look out for the specific schedule of your favourite team.

IPL 2023: How to watch

There is a big change to how IPL 2023 can be watched, as compared to previous editions of the tournament. With streaming rights changing hands and Viacom18 securing the rights, matches in 2023 will be broadcast on JioCinema, which is available on multiple platforms including smartphones, tablets, smart televisions, and streaming devices, as well as the low-cost JioPhone feature phones.

Interestingly, JioCinema is streaming the entire IPL 2023 tournament at up to Ultra-HD resolution, with numerous other improvements to the viewing experience, such as the ability to change camera angles and languages, being implemented. The app will also provide access to statistics and virtual reality implementations on supported devices.

Viewers will be happy to note that JioCinema is currently accessible free of charge to all, with no subscription plan required and the app free to download on all platforms. JioCinema was the streaming platform for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and drew criticism for poor performance and technical issues then, but it’s possible that these issues will be ironed out ahead of IPL 2023 to ensure proper viewing.

Television viewers also have an option to watch IPL 2023 on traditional cable and DTH connections, with the Star Sports network retaining the TV broadcast rights for IPL going into 2023. However, viewers with access to smart TVs and reliable Internet connections are promised a better experience with JioCinema, particularly the higher resolution and app-based features such as camera angles and 12 Indian languages for commentary and on-screen graphics.

Netflix Plans in India Are Among the Cheapest Anywhere in 2023, Switzerland Most Expensive: Report

Netflix plans in India are among the most affordable in 2023, compared to other countries around the world where the global streaming service is available. As per a new report, Netflix pricing in India is considerably cheaper than most other countries, where plan pricing starts at considerably higher prices based on direct currency conversion rates. This is because Netflix sets its pricing according to purchasing power, based on average income levels of the platform’s typical user base and how much a customer might be willing to pay to subscribe to the premium streaming service.

As per a report and analysis of Netflix plan pricing in 245 countries by VPNWiki, India is among the most affordable countries to watch Netflix in 2023. Netflix plans in India start at Rs. 149 per month for the Mobile-only plan, going up to Rs. 649 per month for the Premium plan which offers access to content on up to four devices simultaneously and Ultra-HD HDR resolution for all supported content.

Where is Netflix cheaper?

Notably, only a handful of countries have lower starting prices for Netflix than India. Pakistan and Kenya have lower starting prices, while Turkey, Argentina, and Colombia have lower average pricing across plans. Mobile-only plans are not offered everywhere, and were introduced for price-sensitive markets such as India, in order to offer a lower starting point for potential subscribers to sign up for Netflix. These are far lower than the global average pricing of $6.43 (approximately Rs. 530) to $13.03 (approximately Rs. 1,070) per month.

As the name suggests, with the Mobile plan, Netflix can only be accessed from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Some countries also offer access to an ad-supported basic plan for Netflix which is a bit more affordable than the ad-free basic plan, although this option is not available in India. Importantly, all Netflix content is available to all paid subscribers, regardless of which plan they are on.

Where is Netflix more expensive?

On the other end, Netflix is the most expensive in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, based on the higher purchasing power in those countries and the willingness to pay more for Netflix. In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Netflix prices range from 11.90CHF (approximately Rs. 1,036) to 24.90CHF (approximately Rs. 2,168) per month – considerably higher than pricing for the same plans in India (Rs. 199 for Basic to Rs. 649 for Premium, per month).

Other countries where Netflix is among the most expensive globally are Israel, the US, and Denmark. Netflix prices are generally higher in Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Oceania, although many of these countries now have ad-supported plans to bring down the starting price of Netflix plans.

Netflix recently announced more stringent measures to curb password sharing, where multiple individuals use a single Netflix account to save costs. This has not rolled out in India yet, but users can expect some form of control to be put in place in 2023, since Netflix likely sees this as considerable lost revenue. The service also recently cut prices in some countries, in an effort to retain subscribers amid strong competition.
