Apple TV+, Arcade, and News+ Subscriptions Are Getting a Price Hike in the US, UK

Apple is once again raising the prices of its subscription services, including Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and more. For now, this hike has only gone into effect in the US and select international regions like the UK, where new subscribers will be immediately treated to the new prices. The company didn’t disclose a reason for the price hike, but seeing as it’s set to reveal its fourth-quarter earnings later this week, we can assume Apple plans to bump up revenue numbers in the future. 9to5Mac was the first to report on these price changes, with an Apple statement noting that it will continue to deliver the best content on the platform.

It’s unclear how Apple plans to justify the price increase, albeit Indian customers don’t have to worry about it yet, as monthly subscriptions will cost the same as before. Apple does not have plans to raise its subscription pricing in India as of now. In the US and other affected countries, the Apple TV+ streaming service has gone up from $6.99 (about Rs. 582) per month to $9.99 (about Rs. 832) per month, bringing a range of exclusive content such as the Emmy-winning Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and more. New subscribers get a week’s worth of free trial, and in India, it’s still priced at Rs. 99 monthly. With this, Apple TV+ has joined the growing list of streaming platforms whose prices have increased this year, including Netflix, Max, and Disney+.

Apple Arcade is also going up in price, jumping from $4.99 (about Rs. 415) to $6.99 (about Rs. 582) per month, offering access to countless video games, all of whose progress syncs up with other Apple devices, so you can play them whenever and wherever you like.

The news aggregator app Apple News+ is another service that’s become costlier, growing from $9.99 (about Rs. 832) to $12.99 (about Rs. 1,018) monthly, populating your feed with news articles and exclusive magazine coverage from world-class publications. The subscription can be easily shared with a family member, and users can even choose to listen to stories, just like an audiobook. New subscribers get a one-month-long trial period, though Apple News+ isn’t available in India yet. At the time of writing, it appears that Apple isn’t changing the prices of its Apple Music or Apple Fitness+ services this time. The company’s last price hike was in October last year, which at the time, included pricing changes for the revered music streaming service.

As the aforementioned individual premium services get a price increase, the collective Apple One bundles are also going up. As the name suggests, it packages four Apple services for a lower monthly price, while offering a bonus 50GB of iCloud+ storage. The monthly Individual plan has risen from $16.95 (about Rs. 1,410) to $19.95 (about Rs. 1,660) and comprises Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade, in addition to the aforementioned cloud storage. In India, this service costs Rs. 195 per month. There’s also an Apple One Family plan, which can be shared among five members — benefits are the same, but it comes with an upgraded 200GB of iCloud+ storage. It’s gone up from $22.95 (about Rs. 1,910) to $25.95 (about Rs. 2,160) in the US, whereas in India, it still costs Rs. 365 per month.

And finally, there’s the Apple One Premier plan, which adds Apple Fitness+ and Apple News+ to the package, alongside a 2TB of iCloud+ storage option. It now costs $37.95 (about Rs. 3,160), instead of the older $32.95 (about Rs. Rs. 2,745) price tag. Bear in mind that any subscription you don’t already have will be free for the first month. Existing members in eligible regions will see the above-mentioned price hike ‘30 days later,’ on their next renewal date.

Oppenheimer Sets Digital and 4K Blu-Ray Release Date for November, Includes Over 3 Hours of Special Features

Oppenheimer is finally arriving on digital and physical media on November 21. This release window aligns with producer Emma Thomas’ claim from September, and marks exactly four months since the biopic’s theatrical release on July 21. Having shattered global box office records, partly thanks to the ‘Barbenheimer’ craze, the film will soon be available to own in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, alongside digital streaming options from Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and YouTube Movies. There is no mention of regional language dubbing yet, but going by Oppenheimer’s (still ongoing) theatrical run, Indians can expect Hindi dubbing, at the minimum.

It’s interesting to see Universal Pictures dropping all formats of Oppenheimer at the same time, as most studios put out a digital version first, followed by a physical release and streaming options. Even its box office competitor Barbie followed the industry standard, and was released on VOD merely 53 days after its theatrical release. Despite being billed as rivals, both films with opposing themes, contributed to each other’s successes, perching them at the top of the worldwide box office charts. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer ranks third, having earned an impressive $942.1 million (about Rs. 7,840 crore), while Greta Gerwig’s candy-coated romp leads the year’s charts with a $1.43 billion (about Rs. 11,901 crore) collection. The former is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time, having surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody, which charted renowned singer Freddy Mercury’s life.

The Oppenheimer VOD release also brings over three hours of bonus special features, which reportedly include the 70-minute-long exclusive behind-the-scenes footage titled ‘The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer.’ Expect interviews with the cast and Nolan himself, as they delve into the process involved in bringing the isolated Los Alamos community to life through performances and its technicalities. I highly doubt Nolan would ever divulge how he re-created the atomic bomb explosion using practical effects, but fingers crossed. Then there’s the NBC News documentary ‘To End All War: Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb,’ alongside a ‘Trinity Anniversary Panel Discussion,’ featuring Kai Bird, the Pulitzer award-winning co-author of the biography ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.’ The film is based on that book.

Oppenheimer explores the politics and drama surrounding the creation of the first nuclear bomb, through the eyes of the renowned theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy). The biopic chronicles his life as a Harvard graduate, musing about war crimes, to his obsessive navigation of the Manhattan Project amidst the roars of World War II, leading up to the Trinity Test. Marking Nolan’s first R-rated film in two decades, it also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh. It’s also worth noting that when Oppenheimer does eventually come to streaming, it should be available on JioCinema in India and Peacock internationally. There are no deleted scenes either, as lead Murphy confirmed in an earlier interview.

Oppenheimer is still playing in theatres worldwide. It will be available to watch digitally and physically through video-on-demand on November 21.

The Trial, Foundation Season 2, The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Now Available to Stream: Where to Watch, Details

Three major web series are available to stream today: the Kajol-led courtroom drama The Trial (Disney+ Hotstar), and the sophomore seasons of Foundation (Apple TV+) and The Summer I Turned Pretty (Amazon Prime Video). By and large, the month of July is dry on the TV side, that is unless you enjoy the niche side of it, most of which are adaptations or remakes of existing pieces of media. Out of the three, The Trial – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka is an Indian reimagining of Robert Michelle King’s CBS TV show The Good Wife, whereas the remaining two are adapted from acclaimed books.

The Trial

Where: Disney+ Hotstar

All eight episodes of The Trial are now up for streaming, charting the tragic tale of a former litigator Noyonika Sen (Kajol), who is distraught to learn that her husband (Jisshu Sengupta), a corrupt judge, had been accepting sexual favours as bribes to change verdicts in court. His arrest and immediate freezing of all accounts urge her to return to work at a law firm — after 10 years of sabbatical — becoming the sole breadwinner of the family and quickly emerging as one of the top lawyers anyone could hire. She’s forced to start as a junior lawyer due to the gap in her resume, though that doesn’t stop her from becoming an office favourite — especially that of her boss (Alyy Khan), with whom she’s had some history.

Soon enough, Noyonika is joined by another junior lawyer Shiraj Paswan (Gaurav Pandey) and a consultant Sana (Kubbra Sait), who help her with cases. Unbeknownst to her, things are about to get personal, with her own husband — who constantly lied and cheated on her — reaching out to see if she would defend him in court, creating a dilemma in her mind as she grapples with judging the case based on evidence or her feelings for the man she lived with for years. The Trial marks Kajol’s debut in a web series and is directed by Suparn S. Varma — best known for directing the Manoj Bajpayee-led The Family Man.

In addition to Hindi, The Trial is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Foundation season 2

Where: Apple TV+

Much like Dune, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series of books was long considered unfilmable due to much of its events feeling like history lessons. Undeniably so, David S. Goyer’s (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman’s (Snowpiercer) collaboration has resulted in it being something of a television spectacle in this season, documenting the decay of the Galactic Empire. The chapter is set more than a century after the events of the first season, with Dr. Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) planning to reset the Empire, in light of a predicted collapse of his church-like movement. Elsewhere Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) has a disturbing vision, making her obsessed with wanting to stop The Mule, a threat coming 150 years into the future — all the while darting back and forth to help Dr. Seldon build a second Foundation.

As the Foundation enters a religious phase spreading its faith throughout the Outer Reach, Seldon, Gaal, and Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) run into a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. Meanwhile, Brother Day (Lee Pace) nearly survives an assassination attempt, leaving him quite shaken. Many of the characters we met in season 1 are dead, and so this season helps dive deeper into the larger figures in the story as the plot thickens on a galactic scale. Foundation season 2 also stars Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk, Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn, and Dimitri Leonidas as the master trader Hober Mallow.

Only the first two episodes of Foundation season 2 are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest dropping every Friday until September 15.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2

Where: Amazon Prime Video

Based on Jenny Han’s young adult book trilogy, The Summer I Turned Pretty is largely a coming-of-age story following Isabel ‘Belly’ Conklin’s (Lola Tung) summertime misadventures of romance at Cousins Beach. While the first season was a largely playful affair, season 2 won’t be the same, with Susannah Fisher’s (Rachel Blanchard) breast cancer resurfacing and putting extra weight on her sons Conrad’s (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah’s (Gavin Casalegno) shoulders. The effects of the impending grief strains Conrad’s relationship with Belly, causing him to run away from home and turning season 2 into more of a tragedy.

His brother Jeremiah and Belly soon embark on a road trip to bring him back, deepening the love triangle between the Fisher brothers and the latter, as they get closer than ever before. It is worth mentioning that at the end of season 1, Susannah revealed her decision to participate in an experimental trial to treat her cancer, albeit the chances were super slim — spoilers ahead — which could possibly set up her death, as revealed in the book. Then again, the first season heavily veered away from the source material at certain parts, so maybe she’ll live. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 also stars Sean Kaufman as Belly’s elder brother Steven and Jackie Chung as her mother Laurel.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 has debuted with the first three episodes. New episodes will be released every Friday on Amazon Prime Video until August 18.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese Talk Killers of the Flower Moon at CinemaCon, Reveals First Footage

Martin Scorsese unveiled the first footage from his film Killers of the Flower Moon Thursday at CinemaCon, where his lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and pop superstar Rihanna were among the surprise guests. Dark Western Killers is Scorsese’s sixth movie with DiCaprio, and his tenth with Robert De Niro — but the first time the legendary director has ever brought his go-to A-listers together.

A true story of greed, love and murder set in the 1920s, when members of the newly oil-rich Osage Nation in Oklahoma began dying and disappearing in mysterious circumstances, the twisty crime drama hits theatres in October. Footage played at the movie industry summit in Las Vegas showed DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart in a romantic relationship with a Native American woman (Lily Gladstone) while seemingly caught in the middle of brutal conflict between the Osage and encircling oil-hungry white capitalists.

De Niro plays William Hale, who is seen conspiring with Burkhart, while Jesse Plemons appears as lawman Tom White, sent from the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the murders. Originally, DiCaprio was set to play White, but after spending time with the Osage, he and Scorsese decided to make a ‘big change’ to the script, and center the movie less on the FBI and instead on Burkhart.

Scorsese said they were interested in exploring how “some of these people could have done what they did” to the Osage, and how they could rationalize violence — even against those they loved — by simply claiming: “It’s civilization. One group comes in, and another goes out.”

DiCaprio, hosting a Q&A with Scorsese, described the movie’s events as a “forgotten part of our past.”

Do right

The film was shot at the true, real-life locations where grisly events took place, and Scorsese said the script was reworked until the last day of shooting, as he spent time with the Osage people and was anxious to ‘do right by them.’

“It was about immersing ourselves in that world,” said the New Yorker, despite the “110-degree heat” and the unsettling presence on the surrounding prairies of coyotes and wild horses. The film is adapted from David Grann’s acclaimed 2017 non-fiction book of the same name and will premiere at next month’s Cannes film festival.

Killers will be Apple‘s highest profile big-screen release yet, as the tech giant launches the film in theatres — a splashy launch that it hopes can consequently drum up interest in its Apple TV+ streaming platform. “I’m really thrilled to have a wide theatrical release before it becomes available at home,” said Scorsese, joking that small-screen viewing is only ‘ok’ by comparison.

Apple bought the film from Hollywood studio Paramount after the cost of the lavish, nearly three-and-a-half-hour production began to spiral to a reported $200 million (about Rs. 1,636 crore), and the two companies struck a deal to distribute the film to theatres.

Rihanna

Scorsese, director of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, was awarded CinemaCon’s inaugural ‘Legend of Cinema’ award. DiCaprio said Scorsese’s work “will be revered for centuries and generations to come,” and that the 80-year-old director continues to “create vital cinematic experiences that are at the very pinnacle of artistic ambition and achievement.”

Scorsese used the occasion to call on owners of multiplexes to play ‘truly independent films’ alongside more mainstream fare. Earlier Thursday, Paramount presented footage from other upcoming films, including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Star Dominique Fishback told AFP the presence of more ‘Black and brown people’ and voices in Transformers would open up the seven-movie, billions-grossing franchise to “more and more hearts and households.” “It almost feels like we’re starting the franchise over,” said co-star Anthony Ramos.

The presentation featured a surprise appearance from pop superstar Rihanna, who joked that her newly announced role in The Smurf Movie would earn her ‘cool points’ with her children. The Barbados-born artist will voice the role of Smurfette, as well as write and sing original music and produce the film, out February 2025. “I tried to get the Papa Smurf part but it didn’t work out,” she joked on stage at Caesars Palace.

Animation means “I get to show up in my pyjamas in my third trimester and play a little boo badass.” said Rihanna, who is pregnant with her second child. “I hope this gives me a little bit of cool points with my kids one day. I’m just hoping.”

Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon Sets October Release Date

The upcoming historical drama film Killers Of The Flower Moon finally has a release date.

According to Variety, Killers of the Flower Moon, a historical drama about the serial targeting and murder of members of the oil-rich Osage tribe, will release in limited theatres starting October 6 and will then have a wide release on October 20.

Helmed by Martin Scorsese, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro (The Irishman), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), as well as Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), and Lily Gladstone (Reservation Dogs).

Killers of the Flower Moon is being produced by Apple Original Films, and will then begin streaming on Apple TV+ at an unspecified date. Paramount Pictures will partner with Apple on the theatrical release of the film. It is expected to be a major awards season player, reported Variety.

The film marks the director and the Oscar-winning actor’s next big collaboration after Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Audition, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Select film festival-goers may get a glimpse at the film before the autumn, with multiple sources claiming that the movie is expected to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “where it will be one of the splashiest premieres,” as per Variety.

Apart from that, DiCaprio was last seen in the satirical Don’t Look Up which streamed on Netflix. The film gathered positive feedback from the netizens and also starred Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, and Jonah Hill in prominent roles.

Scorsese, on the other hand, last directed a crime thriller film The Irishman, starring De Niro in the lead role.

Apple to Invest $1 Billion A Year on Theatrical Film Releases: Report

Apple reportedly intends to spend $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,200 crore) per year on film production for theatrical release, and the company has already approached film studios about collaborating upon such titles for release this year and in the coming years. According to a recent report, the company intends to screen films in thousands of theatres for at least one month, reversing its earlier policy of streaming original content and limited box office releases. However, the details are still being worked out.

According to a Bloomberg report, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon could be among the potential films that the company may release theatrically.

This move is part of the Cupertino-based tech giant’s attempts to boost its profile in Hollywood and attract customers to its streaming platform, Apple TV+, as per the report. Usually, Apple has either released films straight to its streaming site or granted limited runs in a select theatres in order to qualify the release for Academy Awards nominations. CODA, a film produced by Apple, won the best picture award at Oscars 2022.

According to the report, Apple is trying to look to collaborate with established film production companies to handle global theatrical distribution, instead of managing it all internally due to a lack of expertise in this field. It is still trying to finalise agreements such as commercialising budget sizes and distribution commissions for the partner studio, the report said.

It also suggests that this is distinct from Apple’s currently underway plans for the Apple Original Films unit, as the Paramount contract originated from agreements a few years ago when Apple purchased the development rights to Killers of the Flower Moon from the studio.

Apple has paid around $200 million (roughly Rs. 1,600 crore) for the eagerly awaited Scorsese production, with the film expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, accompanied by a wide theatrical release for a few months prior to actually streaming on the Apple TV+ platform.

The company’s dedication to long durations theatrical releases is a way for it to pacify Hollywood stars who want to see their works on the big screen while also making people aware for its subscription service, which is projected to have somewhere around 20 million and 40 million users, far less than rivals Netflix and Disney+, according to a CNBC report.

Apple Said to Expand Live TV Advertising Around Major League Soccer Deal

Apple is building an advertising network for live television as part of its deal to stream Major League Soccer games next year, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The company is holding discussions with advertising partners and MLS sponsors in advance of the launch next February about airing advertisements during soccer games and related shows, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

The move is part of a more aggressive push by Apple into advertising. The company’s ad unit generates about $4 billion (roughly Rs. 33,000 crore) in revenue annually, but is seeking to increase that to double-digit billions of dollars, Bloomberg News has reported. That includes putting search advertisements in more apps, such as its maps service, as early as next year.

The tech giant recently struck a 10-year deal to air MLS games in a new subscription service, as well as the Apple TV+ streaming platform. The company will also stream a portion of games for free to users of the Apple TV app.

Apple is planning to run advertising in all three tiers of the partnership: the dedicated package, paid TV+ subscriptions, and the free TV app. The move represents an expansion of the company’s early live TV advertising, which is included in Major League Baseball games that already air on TV+.

Apple declined to comment.

Apple sees the revenue from advertising on MLS games, in addition to subscription fees, as key to generating money from the MLS deal. The contract has been estimated to cost $250 million (roughly Rs. 2,050 crore) per season, or $2.5 billion (roughly Rs. 20,500 crore) over the next decade.

Todd Teresi, Apple’s vice president of advertising platforms, is leading the expansion into MLS ads. He recently oversaw the addition of more advertising slots to the App Store, including one on the front page of the outlet.

It’s a contentious move for Apple, both because it once prided itself on avoiding ad overload and because its recent privacy changes have undercut the marketing efforts of social media businesses. The company has said its own push into ads is unrelated.

The Cupertino, California-based company also is exploring bringing ads to additional apps and services. Apple has other apps with App Store-like storefronts, including its podcasts and books offerings. The company also could introduce an ad-supported version of TV+, following in the footsteps of Netflix and Disney.

Apple Music, TV+ Prices Increased in the US, UK, Other Countries, but Not in India

Apple has increased the prices of some of its subscription services including the popular Apple Music and Apple TV+ around the world, including in the US and UK. However, users in India will not have to spend more than they are currently used to. According to Apple, the changes were necessary because of licensing price increases and the overall size of its content catalogues. An Apple statement has been reported by 9to5mac.com, and indicates that artistes and content creators can expect to earn more per stream as a result of this change. The company recently announced that Apple Music has amassed over 100 million tracks available to stream.

In India, Apple Music will continue to cost Rs. 99 per month for individual users and Rs. 149 for a family with up to six members. The Student tier costs Rs. 59 per month if you can show valid identification, and the voice-only plan which only lets you stream tracks and curated radio stations with Siri voice commands, costs Rs. 49 per month. The price of the individual user plan in the US used to be $9.99 per month (approximately Rs. 825) but it now costs $10.99 (approximately Rs. 908). The family plan has risen from $14.99 to $16.99 per month.

Apple TV+ also costs Rs. 99 per month in India after a seven-day free trial, whereas the price in the US is now $6.99 (approximately Rs. 578), up from $4.99 (approximately Rs. 412) per month. Anyone who buys an iPhone, iPad or Mac will still get their first three months for free. Students who are eligible for the reduced-cost Apple Music plan also get access to Apple TV+ at no additional cost.

The scale is the same in the UK, for example, where the price of Apple Music has risen from 9.99 GBP (approximately Rs. 937) and 14.99 GPB for the individual and family plans to 10.99 GBP (approximately Rs. 1,031) and 16.99 GBP respectively. Prices of the voice-only and student plans are unchanged. Apple TV+ now costs 6.99 GBP per month (approximately Rs. 656) up from 4.99 GBP (approximately Rs. 469).

In May this year, Apple had increased the cost of the Apple Music student subscription plan from its previous price of Rs. 49 per month. This change had taken effect in multiple countries around the world including Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand, and Singapore. Before a price cut in 2019, Apple Music used to cost Rs. 120 in India for individuals and Rs. 190 per month for families. However, Apple discontinued the yearly payment plan for individuals, which came to Rs. 1,200 per year representing significant savings. Notably, this is the first ever price rise for Apple Music in the US. The price of Apple Music did not even rise when lossless streaming quality was introduced.

Apple also offers its Apple One subscription bundle plans, priced starting at Rs. 195 per month in India with access to Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade, as well as iCloud+ with 50GB of storage space. This lets you save Rs. 177 per month compared to paying for all these subscriptions individually. The Apple One family plan costs Rs. 365 per month in India and allows access to all these services for up to six people, plus 200GB of iCloud space in total. In the US, Apple One was priced starting at $14.95 (approximately Rs. 1,238) per month for a single user and $19.95 per month for the family plan, with the same benefits. These costs have risen to $16.95 per month and $22.95 per month respectively. The Premier plan, which ups iCloud space to 2TB and adds access to Apple News+ and Apple Fitness+ is not presently available in India.
