Inside Melissa Stark’s exciting second season on ‘SNF’

For Melissa Stark, “there’s nothing better” than when the “Sunday Night Football” preparation “all comes together.”

With the Packers set to close out the year with a win over the Vikings on New Year’s Eve, Stark knew the postgame interview with Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love could be a golden opportunity for the 25-year-old to test out his New Year’s resolution of shuffling cards — something the veteran NFL reporter learned earlier in the week.

“I asked all the players this week their New Year’s resolutions and Jordan Love’s was to learn how to shuffle cards,” Stark recently recalled to The Post. “At the last minute our producer goes, ‘Oh my gosh, you should have cards there.’”

Though securing the cards was something of a whirlwind — “We left them in our truck and two minutes to go, I’m like, ‘Who has the cards?’” — Stark was able to hand Love a deck as Green Bay celebrated its blowout 33-10 victory in Week 17.

“It becomes this really funny thing postgame, and I’m like, ‘Here, you can get started,’ and I hand him the deck of cards,” Stark said. “It’s so fun when your research from the week pays off that way. We do it to tell stories and the stories are definitely the best part of our jobs.”

Stark, 50, has been reporting stories from both the studio and sidelines for more than two decades.

A University of Virginia alum, Stark is enjoying a memorable sophomore season on “Sunday Night Football” — more than 20 years after serving as a sideline reporter for ABC’s “Monday Night Football” from 2000-’02.

Before her return in 2022, when she took over sideline duties from Michele Tafoya, Stark — a former national correspondent on NBC’s “Today” show, among other posts held at the network from 2003-’07 — stepped away from the business to focus on raising her four children with husband Mike.

“What I think I’m most proud of is the longevity that I’ve had and the fact that I was able to leave the business and not know if I was going to come back and be OK with that, I was OK with that because starting a family to me was so important,” said Stark, who worked her 100th regular-season game from the sideline in December.

“So coming back, what it means is that I’m able to come back to a career that I absolutely love and frankly, with such a different perspective. Coming back later in my life, more mature and as a mom.”

With the playoffs nearing, Stark is looking back on an NFL season that’s been quite the “family” affair.

When the Jets hosted the Chiefs at MetLife Stadium in Week 4, which marked Taylor Swift’s second gameday appearance in support of boyfriend Travis Kelce, Stark’s daughters — much like Swifties everywhere — were hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop superstar.

“My daughter was in the truck for that first (game) and she was like, ‘Mom, I watched Taylor the whole time,’ ” said Stark, who noted production “had a camera on [Swift] the whole time for her reactions.”

What’s more, Starks’ kids, Clara, Clemmie, Jackson and Mike, got to see her in action.

“The beauty of it is, they love what I do and they get to see it and they get to come along, they all love football and coming on the field with me,” Stark said.

The Swift scene was just one of the exciting stories Stark covered this season.

Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane speaks with Melissa Stark postgame on Nov. 12, 2023. AP

As the Raiders prepared to face the Jets in Week 10 in Las Vegas, Stark spoke with Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane in the days ahead, in which a “throwaway question” transpired into something more significant.

“He talked to me on the way home [from practice] and his wife [Shelby] was in the car,” Stark recalled. “I go, ‘What’s motivating you this season?’ Sort of a throwaway question, and he turns to his wife in the car, ‘Should we tell her?’ And he was like, ‘Well, my wife’s actually pregnant and we haven’t told anybody yet.’”

The 28-year-old Spillane then relayed to Stark that if he made a “crazy play,” he would put the football under his jersey as if he were pregnant.

The plan sort of came to be when Spillane had the game-sealing interception in the Raiders’ 16-12 win.

“He gets the game-winning interception, he goes nuts, he forgets to do this, so right when I get him, I was like, ‘Hey, we’re going to break some news, you were supposed to put the ball under your shirt,’ and then he does it in the postgame interview,” Stark said.

“I just get excited when it all comes together, all your hard work.”

As wild-card weekend gets underway, Stark is soaking in the moment in what she described as “the perfect role.”

“There’s a ton of adrenaline and it’s very energizing, and I just feel very fortunate that I found the perfect role for me. It’s exactly what I want to do,” she said.

Stark will report from Detroit as part of “Sunday Night Football’s” wild-card weekend coverage, with Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth calling the anticipated Rams-Lions matchup in which Matthew Stafford makes his return to Ford Field.

Kickoff gets underway on Jan. 13 at 8 p.m.

JuJu Smith-Schuster wears kilt to Super Bowl 2023

JuJu Smith Schuster turned heads when he arrived to Super Bowl 2023.

The Chiefs wide receiver rocked a light green kilt as he strolled into State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. on Sunday.

Smith-Schuster, who’s known for his eye-popping fashion choices, paired the knee-length skirt with a white collared shirt with long sleeves and black boots. He accessorized with a black hat and sunglasses and carried a black bag.

“This sh-t not for everybody,” the 26-year-old wideout wrote on his Instagram Story, including a photo of his pregame look. He added a graphic that said, “Paris.”

The Chiefs captioned their post: “JuJu on that Super Bowl beat 😮‍💨.”

Meanwhile, Smith-Schuster’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, looked dapper in a patterned suit and mirrored Oakley sunglasses. The two-time NFL MVP joins Tom Brady as the only quarterback all-time to start three Super Bowls in their first six seasons.

Smith-Schuster made a fashionable entrance to play in the first Super Bowl of his career.

The receiver, who signed a one-year $10.75 million max deal with the Chiefs this past offseason, will earn an extra $1 million if Kansas City defeats the Eagles in Super Bowl 2023 and he plays 50 percent of the snaps.

Smith-Schuster finished his first season with the Chiefs with 933 yards and three touchdowns.

The former Steelers receiver, who’s set to become a free agent in the offseason, told NFL Network’s Mike Giardi on Saturday that he’s hoping to remain in Kansas City.

“Yeah, I want to come back,” Smith-Schuster said. “Of course, man. Look where I’m at? I want to come back to this.”

Patrick Mahomes’ late dash on gimpy ankle only adds to Chiefs legacy

Clark Hunt, the Chiefs’ chairman, was watching from the warmth and comfort of the owner’s box Sunday night with wind-chill temperatures outside the glass windows of his hermetically sealed sanctuary hovering around zero degrees.

The seconds in the AFC Championship game at Arrowhead Stadium were quickly bleeding off the clock with Kansas City having already spent its final timeout and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was on a mad scramble to get one final first down to give his kicker a chance to win the game and send the Chiefs to a third Super Bowl in the past four years.

To review: Mahomes, in the previous week’s playoff win over the Jaguars, suffered a high right ankle sprain, an injury that usually shelves football players for a minimum of two weeks and usually more than that.

Mahomes didn’t miss a single play of practice during the week and wasn’t even listed on the injury report by the time the locals were noshing on their Kansas City barbecue dinners Friday night.

So, on Sunday night, there was Mahomes, on his gimpy ankle in a game tied at 20-20 and on third-and-4 from the Cincinnati 47-yard line, dashing toward the sideline to stop to clock.

And there was Bengals 22-year-old linebacker Joseph Ossai chasing Mahomes, losing track of where he was on the sideline and pushing the quarterback after he was already out of bounds

A late-hit penalty was called, adding 15 yards to the 5-yard Mahomes scramble, setting Kansas City up with a gift: a 45-yard field goal to win the game and send the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.

When Mahomes made that run, it was clear that he didn’t give a damn if it was the last play he made this season.

Upstairs, in his glassed-in nook, Hunt marveled at what he was seeing.

Everyone did, really.

“Watching the play, I was like, ‘Well, Superman put his cape on and got it done for us,’ ’’ Hunt said.

Brett Veach, the Kansas City general manager and the chief architect of these Chiefs, would reveal after the game what no one from the Kansas City wanted to admit before the game.

“People don’t realize how hurt he was,’’ Veach said. “High ankles are terrible injuries and sometimes guys miss two or three weeks. He was out there running for a first down … a big play in the game that got us in field-goal range. It just adds to his already great legacy.”

This is what’s taking place in Kansas City with Mahomes. There’s an unmistakable legacy being built by No. 15 in red and white. It’s a legacy that’s a virtual lock to one day end up chronicled in Canton at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Mahomes is playing in his fifth season as a starter and is headed to his third Super Bowl after having played in his fifth consecutive conference championship. He’s already been a league MVP and is likely going to win the award again this year.

Mahomes is so uniquely gifted that it’s easy to take for granted the gravity of what he accomplished Sunday night, not only playing in those frigid temperatures, but doing it while playing with an injury that would have had 90 percent of players sidelined for the game.

When I asked Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon after the game to describe Mahomes’ will to win, he said, “I don’t really have to describe it. You saw it. It’s clear as day. When it’s all said and done, he’s going to go down as one of the greatest to do it. I’m glad I’m on his side and not the other side.’’

There isn’t a person in the Kansas City organization who would argue with that sentiment.

“He’s a straight warrior, man,’’ Chiefs tackle Orlando Brown said. “He’s our leader and we follow behind him. He’s the best at what he does in the world.’’

Here’s another thing that makes Mahomes the best at what he does in this generation of quarterbacks: As good as his final numbers were Sunday — 29-for-43 for 326 yards and two TDs — it didn’t even have the look of a great game by him.

Mahomes simply gutted it out on essentially one leg and produced numbers that most NFL quarterbacks would produce on their best days.

He did so with his running backs rushing for 34 yards on 17 carries and with three of his top receivers — JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and Kadarius Toney — all leaving the game at points with injuries and he still completed passes to 10 different players.

“I think it’s similar [with] all the great ones — they’ll have roster turnover and they’ll find a way, they’ll have injuries and they’ll find a way [and] Patrick is at the top of that list, in my opinion,’’ Veach said. “I’m biased, but he’s incredible.’’

The Mahomes legend continues to grow.

Next stop on the legacy-building tour: Super Bowl LVII.

Brittany Matthews drools over Patrick Mahomes’ AFC Championship look

Patrick Mahomes can thank wife Brittany Matthews for always looking sharp on Sundays.

Leading up to Sunday’s AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and Bengals in Kansas City, Matthews took to her Instagram Stories to share a photo of Mahomes, 27, as he made his way to Arrowhead Stadium.

“If you’re wondering, yes I dress him every game day, and he is always icey [sic] yes,” the 27-year-old Matthews posted alongside a photo of Mahomes, in addition to drooling and smiley face emojis.

The Mahomes post, which was originally shared on the Chiefs’ Instagram account, featured the quarterback sporting a light-color jacket over a Dior T-shirt, along with distressed jeans, white sneakers, and sunglasses.

“Cool? Nah, he’s ice cold,” the Chiefs’ social team captioned the image.

Mahomes wasn’t the only quarterback to make a fashion statement on Sunday as the Bengals’ Joe Burrow — who is well-known for his game-day ensembles — paired his pink jacket and matching slacks with a white shirt that featured a bear sporting a shirt that read, “Sorry.”

Mahomes, who suffered an ankle injury in Kansas City’s Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, is set to play Sunday. The five-time Pro Bowler will certainly be feeling the love from Chiefs Kingdom come kickoff, from Matthews especially.

Potential Super Bowl return ‘up in the air’

Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t counting himself out just yet.

On Friday, the injured San Francisco 49ers quarterback told The Athletic “that’s still up in the air,” regarding a return for the Super Bowl if San Francisco beats the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in the NFC Championship.

After taking over for Trey Lance following his season-ending right ankle injury in Week 2, Garoppolo, 31, fractured his left foot in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins.

Jimmy Garoppolo said his status for a potential Super Bowl return is still “up in the air.”

Jimmy Garoppolo has been sidelined since Week 12.
USA TODAY Sports

Last week, he returned to practice for rehab work, but he’s not yet ready to return this week to face the Eagles.

Garoppolo explained he “can do everything on his still-mending foot but sprint.”

Since Garoppolo’s absence, “Mr. Irrelevant” Brock Purdy has kept the 49ers relevant. He’s recorded a 7-0 record since taking over, and has recorded a 109.9 quarterback rating with three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in the playoffs.

Garoppolo has not been placed on injured reserve, giving the 49ers the option to bring the quarterback into action before the season concludes. Currently, Josh Johnson, who joined the team following Garoppolo’s injury, is the No. 2 quarterback if needed.

Prior to his injury, Garoppolo completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 2,437 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Given Purdy’s performance, however, if he can beat the Eagles and clinch the NFC Championship, it may not matter if Garoppolo is available or not.

Garoppolo will become a free agent in March and could be a solution to another NFL team’s quarterback needs.

Giants’ dismal loss can’t change fact future is bright

On the last day of a football season that felt like the last day of a high school semester, the Giants’ Brian Daboll finally had to concede that there are things that are beyond the control of a football head coach, even an excellent football coach, even a coach who has spent the last 11 ½ months lending oxygen to a franchise and adrenaline to a fan base.

Even Daboll — never too rambunctious after wins, never too downtrodden after losses — couldn’t disguise the hurt in his voice and the fatigue in his bones.

“I wish we could do this again next week,” he said.

The Eagles flattened the Giants 38-7 Saturday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and it honestly didn’t take very long for them to delete whatever mystery had been attached to the proceedings. The Eagles scored the first two times they touched the ball. They stopped the Giants on an early fourth down, which seemed to pick Daboll’s pockets of the surplus of pixie dust he’d carried around all year.

It was 28-0 at the half. The Linc was beside itself. Giants fans spent halftime checking out what was available on Hulu and Netflix.

Brian Daboll
N.Y. Post: Charles Wenzelberg

“A crash landing,” is how Daboll described it, again and again and again, and there really was no better wordsmithing on this night. The Giants, flying into the game on such a high, wound up colliding with the back end of a row of buses like Evel Knievel, only the buses were dressed in green Eagles uniforms.

“They did everything better than we did,” Daboll said.

They did. It was complete, it was thorough, it was an evisceration start to finish — and it doesn’t reduce by even one ounce what the Giants accomplished this year. If, back in August, you picked the Giants to win six games there was a term your friends used for you: eternal optimist. And even you didn’t get them to nine. Even you couldn’t have fathomed they would win a playoff game for the first time in 11 years.

Daniel Jones
Corey Sipkin

“It was a special thing to be a part of,” quarterback Daniel Jones said, and it was a special thing to watch, from the moment Daboll flashed two fingers at the end of the opener at Tennessee to the remarkable tsunami of faith that followed the Giants down the Turnpike for this NFC divisional playoff.

The sting will linger a day or two.

Then you will remember a stolen moment: Jones trampling the Vikings last week? Kayvon Thibodeaux ransacking the Commanders in Week 15? Saquon Barkley showing extended examples of why he was once described as being touched “by the hand of God?” Go ahead. Pick as many as you want. There are plenty of them.

Soon enough, of course, you will begin to think about something else.

You will think about next season, and the seasons to come, and you will want to ponder how this season ought to be a building block for something better, something greater, something sustainable. General manager Joe Schoen and Daboll, no doubt, will already have thought about that by the time you wake up Sunday morning, and there are few franchises in any sport right now whose fans trust their leadership more deeply than Giants fans trust Schoen and Able.

Of course there’s a world of difference, and sometimes a vast chasm, between what ought to happen and what does. Daboll sounded a familiar tone for longtime New York football observers when he said, near the end of his postgame gathering with reporters:

Saquon Barkley
Corey Sipkin

“Disappointed. I wish we could’ve done a better job, I wish I could’ve done a better job. It feels like crap, that’s as honest as I can be.

“You have to work extremely hard to get to this spot,” Daboll continued. “It’s a hard place to get to, this division round.”

In that moment Daboll sounded precisely as his spiritual antecedent had, almost 24 years earlier. By January 1999, Bill Parcells had moved on to the Jets and in two seasons, he had them within 30 minutes of a Super Bowl. That didn’t happen, though the moment those Jets stepped off the field at Mile High Stadium, they were christened Next Year’s Champs.

Parcells, who’d seen this gauntlet before, looked 120 years old as he leaned against a wall just outside the Jets’ locker room, his eyes hollow and his voice soft.

“You realize just how much work you have to go through just to get right back to where we are right now,” Parcells said. “Free agency. The draft. Voluntary workouts. Training camp. Sixteen games. All of it. Just to get right back to where we’re standing.”

The Jets never did get back there under Parcells. Things happen. Players get hurt. Rookies don’t pan out. Seasons often behave with a mind of their own. So the Giants know, right now, immediately, that there are no guarantees about what’s next.

Still at the end of a day — at the end of a season, the end of a semester — it’s good to be a Giants fan, and good to be a part of this team’s future. One crash landing doesn’t change any of that. If anything, it makes you want to push the fast-forward button, you know?

NFL video reveals Giants’ Dexter Lawrence trash talk vs. Vikings

Dexter Lawrence does more than dominate opponents on the field. He enjoys some old-fashioned trash talk, too.

The Giants’ Pro Bowl nose tackle was mic’d up during Sunday’s wild-card win over the Vikings, and an NFL Films video shows the 25-year-old jawing at Minnesota center Garrett Bradbury.

“Five Six, you gonna take me out? You gonna take me out? You give me more hugs than my girlfriend give me,” Lawrence tells Bradbury in the clip. “Come on, man.”

Lawrence later says, “I know it’s hard. You signed up for this.”

The beginning of the video shows Lawrence attributing some of his success to Pilates.

“That Pilates be getting me right Leonard,” he tells fellow defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

“For real?” Williams replied. “A lot more flexible.”

NFL Films also captured rookie linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux praising Lawrence on the sideline.

“You’re the greatest player I’ve ever played with,” Thibodeaux tells Lawrence, who had six total tackles, including one for a loss, and four quarterback hits in the win over the Vikings.

Lawrence, a second-team All Pro, set career-highs across the board during the 2022 regular season with 68 tackles, 28 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles.
