Here’s Your Binge Watch Guide for the Weekend: Killer Soup, Lift, Tiger 3 and More

With the biting cold winters lingering on our heads, binge-watching through the weekend in the warm comfort of your blanket, with a hot saucer of soup sounds like the perfect plan! To save you the hustle of scrolling through endless titles to stream, we have hand-picked a few OTT releases of the week for you.

If you are looking for that adrenaline rush, we would recommend Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee’s Killer Soup. Another pick could be Comedian Kevin Hart’s money heist drama Lift, where he tries to steal millions of dollars up in the air in a commercial plane.

Reacher Season 2 has also released its 45-minute-long penultimate episode. However, if you are in the mood for some superhero drama, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Echo could be a good choice (spoiler alert: she has different superpowers from comic books).

Salman’s Tiger 3 and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, (both of which had a theatrical release), are also now available to stream on Amazon Prime. While at it don’t forget to check the extended version of Tom Cruise’s Dead Reckoning Part 1.

Amazon Prime Video Said to Include Limited Ads From January; Option to Pay Extra to Stay Ad-Free Available

Amazon will start incorporating advertisements within their Prime Video streaming services soon. A report citing the company’s intimation to Amazon Prime users in the US claims that the standard Amazon Prime plan will show ads while streaming movies and TV shows. This, however, is not a sudden move. The company announced the move in September this year and stated that it would go into effect in early 2024. Now, the action has a date of commencement in select regions. Amazon has not yet confirmed when this limited ads feature will be effective for Prime Video users in India.

A report by The Verge claims that Amazon said in an email to customers in the US that starting January 29, advertisements will be included in movies and TV shows streamed on its Prime Video platform. The move will let them continue investing in great content and increase the amount spent over time, the company claimed in the cited email.

Amazon also noted in the email that they intended to have significantly fewer advertisements than broadcast television and other streaming TV providers. They explained that the current price of Prime membership remains unchanged for all Amazon Prime users in the US and they did not need to take any additional action because of this move.

However, if a user wishes to continue to enjoy their ad-free Prime Video experience, they can enjoy the same by upgrading their current Amazon Prime plan. They will be required to pay an additional $2.99 (roughly Rs. 250) per month. Currently, the standard Amazon Prime subscription costs $14.99 (roughly Rs. 1,200). From January 29, users will need to spend $17.99 (roughly Rs. 1,500) each month to continue to watch movies and TV shows ad-free on Prime Video or continue on their older plan with occasional ads.

Notably, Prime Video membership can also be bought individually, without subscribing to the standard Amazon Prime plan. Presently, users need to pay $8.99 (roughly Rs. 750) per month to access only the Prime Video streaming service. Once the limited ads feature goes into effect, that plan will increase to $11.99 (roughly Rs. 1,000), according to the aforementioned report. Another report by The Guardian claimed the same action will start in the UK and Germany from February 5.

Amazon Prime Lite made its debut in India in June this year. It offers a cost-effective alternative to the company’s standard annual Prime subscription. The budget-friendly package offers many benefits similar to the standard Amazon Prime subscription including two-day deliveries and access to the Prime Video catalogue, albeit with some restrictions. Notably, Amazon Prime Lite does not provide access to Amazon Music, Amazon Gaming, and Prime Reading. The e-commerce site has now slashed the price of the Amazon Prime Lite annual plan in India.

Amazon Prime Lite subscription benefits

Amazon Prime Lite subscription allows users to enjoy a lot of benefits similar to the ones enjoyed by regular Prime users. They are eligible for two-day delivery on select items at no additional cost, as well as one-day or same-day delivery options.

No-cost EMI options are also allowed for Amazon Prime Lite users, similar to standard Prime users. You can access Morning Delivery options to eligible addresses at Rs. 175 per item with a Prime Lite membership. There is also no minimum order value for free delivery eligibility. With the Prime Lite plan, you can also avail of a no-rush delivery option to get a cashback of Rs. 25 on your order.

Most Prime Lite limitations come with Prime Video access. Amazon Targets Merchandise Exports Worth $20 Billion From India by 2025

Amazon is targeting merchandise exports worth $20 billion (nearly Rs. 1,66,500 crore) from India by 2025 by adding thousands of small sellers to its e-commerce platform, a company official said on Friday.

“We are very encouraged by the number of entrepreneurs who signed up this year. We are looking to scale up,” Bhupen Wakankar, director global trade, Amazon told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event, referring to plans for exports.

There was huge demand for “Made in India” organic health supplements, homeware like bath towels, jute rugs, and robotic games for children ahead of the Black Friday Cyber Monday sale, an 11-day shopping period from Friday, Wakankar said.

Launched in 2015 with a handful of sellers, Amazon Global Trade, the business to consumers (B2C) exports platform of the e-commerce giant, is gaining traction in India.

The company has added more than 100,000 small manufacturers to sell a wide range of products to overseas customers, he said.

“Some of the sellers are first time exporters, including those who left their corporate jobs to start e-commerce exports,” he said.

Thousands of small exporters, who earlier lacked access to global markets, have seen 70 percent business growth annually through e-commerce platform, which provided logistics support and access to more than 200 million Amazon Prime members globally, he said.

This comes as India’s exports of goods declined 7 percent year-on-year during first seven months of this fiscal year.

On the e-commerce platform, the highest growth was seen in categories like beauty, apparels, home, kitchen, furniture, and toys.

Holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year were driving sales of Indian products in markets such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Germany.

To encourage exporters, Wakankar said, Amazon had slashed the subscription fees for its global selling programme from $120 (nearly Rs. 1,000) to $1 (nearly Rs. 84) for the first three months for exporters signing up before March 31.

OTT Platforms in India Using 5G Networks Without Paying Up, Claims COAI DG

Cellular Operators Association of India Director General S P Kochhar on Thursday made a case for sharing profit between OTT players and telecom companies for using 5G networks.

“While telcos carry their traffic of voice and data, majority of the use of these networks is done by OTT players who load these networks with massive amounts of data which they carry to the end users.

“They get it from content providers, put it on their platform and deliver it to the end users without paying anything to the network providers who have created the network for them to roll on,” Kochhar said.

OTT players, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5, SonyLIV have significant user base in India.

He said over-the-top platforms benefit from the roll-out of advanced technologies like 5G.

“It is like building a house and staying in one floor and other floors are given out on rent which are used by the tenant for commercial purposes but he doesn’t pay the rent.

“This is very silly. If I have built something and I give it out on rent, I expect some value to come out of it. I’m not saying that the entire amount of profit that you earn will come to me but some amount should,” he pointed out.

Telcos are facing financial distress because of their huge capex that they have incurred to roll out 5G networks, he added.

“We are asking for a fair share for setting up, maintaining and running these networks,” Kochhar added.

Reports suggest that India’s video OTT market is expected to touch $12.5 billion (nearly Rs. 1,03,890 crore) by 2030 on the back of access to better networks, digital connectivity and smartphones.

Amazon Prime Video Announces Business Reality Series ‘Mission Start Ab’ in Partnership With Government of India

Streaming service Prime Video on Wednesday announced ‘Mission Start Ab’, a business reality series in partnership with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA). The seven-episode series will show promising entrepreneurs, focused on scaling made-for-India innovations with the potential to impact socio-economic change, undertake a series of challenges in pursuit of scaling their business and securing funding for their ventures, as per the platform. “With India as one of the world’s largest and most vibrant start-up ecosystems, this wholly Made-In-India series also brings together three renowned investors who will search for India’s next Unicorn, by putting these 10 early-stage founders through a series of intense exercises and simulations that will test their entrepreneurial, management, communication and crises management skills,” the streaming platform stated in a press release.

‘Mission Start Ab’, which is currently in production, is slated to premiere soon on Prime Video. “Lauding the remarkable spirit of India’s grassroot innovators, I am delighted to announce Prime Video’s reality series Mission Start Ab. This captivating series will serve as a powerful platform, showcasing the inspiring stories of those driving social change through innovation,” said Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

“I am optimistic that it will offer immense learning opportunities to grassroot innovators in India, providing valuable insights into sustainable start-up practices and attracting the right investors. Furthermore, the series promises to entertain viewers while promoting the growth of our nation’s grassroots innovation ecosystem,” he added.

Sushant Sreeram, Country Director, Prime Video, India, said the streamer has always been an enabler of India’s economy – directly and indirectly. “This collaboration between the Office of the PSA, Government of India and Prime Video is another milestone on the journey that started earlier this year with Amazon India signing the Letter of Engagement (LoE) with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) with an objective of contributing to the growth of India’s creative economy,” Sareen said.

Actor Alia Bhatt was also present at the event and said that ‘Mission Start Ab’ has the potential to have a ‘far-reaching impact on the country’s growing start-up ecosystem’. “While there are many great ideas and ambitious young founders around us, it takes a special kind of determination to turn that idea into reality, build the right team, find the right mentors, raise funding, and create something out of nothing,” she said.
